Reviews
The hotel's location is consistently praised across all reviews, with guests appreciating its proximity to major attractions and public transportation. However, the quality of the rooms and amenities is a common complaint, with guests frequently mentioning issues such as small room size, uncomfortable beds, and noisy air conditioning.
- Excellent location

1 elevator was down over all was happy with the room was clean good location to monuments.

Good staff, rooms cleaned nicely. Great price for the area. On the downside , TV was spotty with reception, coffee station has powered creamer. Sorry but at least have small liquid self serve pods. Only one elevator worked and it didn’t even sync properly with the floors. So I went to floor six but it said five. Minor issues but easy enough to fix or update. These should be addressed and not left alone just because it’s an old hotel with a good price. Would I stay there again…. Yes because I can get coffee somewhere else the elevator midsummer I can figure out and the TV is only a convenience for a small amount of time in the room at morning and night. Bottom line great location and great price for the area

Very nice hotel if your plans are just to sleep there. Very clean and comfortable. It doesn’t have a restaurant or breakfast bar. The hotel does have a small sitting area with a coffee station. But there is a Starbuck’s at the other end of the block and plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. I would stay here again.

We arrived late and the gentleman at the front desk was wonderful. He was also very helpful. It was clean, quiet and comfortable. Will definitely be back. Perhaps have a list of parking garages available in the neighborhood and especially ones that are open late.

The ambience of an older Washington DC hotel was really fun for our granddaughter. The shower was like a water park. Good location.

Nothing notable to like Room is worse than on pics, all facilities are outdated. AC didn’t do a good job in 90F in early June. Location is close to White House but no grocery stores or great restaurants around, everything was mediocre. Beds were very soft and uncomfy. And yeah it was very loud from noise from the street and a club in adjacent building which had loud music till at least 11 PM. Do not recommend to anyone.

Just returned from my 2-day stay here. Very clean. That's all I cared about. Now, it does appear a bit outdated and I would've preferred to have a coffee maker in my room, but honestly, no big deal at all. The air conditioning worked, the bed was comfortable, the shower heated up quickly, the room was spotless, and I rested assured that I picked a good place. Now, if you're working remotely from the hotel... beware that the WiFi is spotty. I struggled to log in to work for quite some time. Had to use my phone's hotspot to get the job done. Other than that, great experience :)

This hotel was sub-standard.When I checked in the guy first couldn't find my reservation, then looked confused, suddenly disappeared upstairs in the elevator, returned to say that the room was dirty, searched for a new room, disappeared again to check it and returned to say it was ok. He said he'd leave a note to say I was in a different room, but I had visions of someone else turning up to my room that night! The key cards de-magnetised almost every single time I returned to my room. The hotel was old and not in a good way--everything was tired. Fortunately, I had new windows, so the noise levels outside were not too bad, but my colleague really struggled. The air conditioner seemed to struggle to regulate the temperature, so the room was alternately boiling hot or freezing cold. I know DC hotels are expensive and hard to get, but I'd rather be further from the venue than stay there again.

First let me start by saying after booking my room and then reading some of these reviews I thought I had made the wrong decision. I even contemplated canceling my reservation and finding another hotel. I'M SO GLAD THAT I DID NOT!!! THE LOCATION OF THE HOTEL WAS PERFECT!!!! My room was cozy and great for 1-2 people that don't mind sharing close quarters. I did not take any pics of my room because the rooms are exactly as it appears in the photos on the websites. The check in process was smooth, and the front desk attendant was extremely friendly. My room including the bathroom and sheets on the bed were extremely clean. The shower had great water pressure and did not take long to get hot. There were plenty of outlets to charge up any amount of devices you have. Please be mindful that this is a historical hotel and does not come with all of the bells and whistles as a new hotel, if it did it would not be considered historical. Even though the hotel did not have a lot of the amenities as some of the newer hotels that I have stayed in, my stay was amazing. I will definitely be staying here the next time I'm in the area. There were a few concerns that I had one would be that there are no microwaves in the room or in a communal area. The ventilation system in the bathroom was extremely loud. The AC was also extremely loud but worked great with keeping the room comfortable and cool. There are two elevators but one of them was out of service but even with the one out of service I didn't have to wait to access the elevator.

The bed sheets didn’t feel clean; there were spots on them. Even after I asked for room service and specifically mentioned changing the sheets, I found they hadn’t been changed. The hotel is next to a nightclub/bar and it was noisy at night, so if you are looking for calm nights (which I expect to have), it’s probably tough.

The location was excellent. Close to a lot of the major sites and attractions in DC. From the few interactions we had with the staff, they seemed friendly and helpful. The water temperature and pressure in the shower were great. But it pretty much ends there. Granted we had a basic room, but outside of the one closet there is not a place to store any clothing or other items. One of the two elevators was out of service the whole time we were there. The one ice machine is located in the dungeon below the first floor. Elevator to the first floor, then down the back staircase to get ice. The fan/vent/light in the bathroom sounded like a 747 jet engine. It was unbearable everything time you turned the light on. The window unit A/C was weird. We would have to power the unit off every time we wanted to adjust the setting. We spent three nights for a business trip, but if we had to spend another night, we would’ve chosen somewhere else to stay. If you’re looking for comfort, this isn’t the place in regard to a standard room.

Excellent location with proximity to a number of restaurants, cafes, metro stops and walking distance to the White House and national mall area. Staff were nice and the pre-authorisation deposit was very promptly refunded at check out. The architecture of the building was actually quite interesting - a really curiously shaped bathroom! The room was a little on the cramped side. The main problem with this place however was the fact that my room key only worked about 14% of the time. Even when the box showed a green light the door didn't open half the time and the rest of the time it showed a red light despite the fact that it had already proven to have worked; I had to go to reception to get the card re-coded. Also I'm not sure if this was a mistake from housekeeping, but I had two little bottles of shampoo but no bottle of shower gel in the bathroom, meaning I had to shower with one of the little hand soaps; this wasn't rectified after housekeeping had turned down the room the next day. Not the end of the world but a note that you may want to carry some shower gel just in case.

Good value. Location was good for metro but wish it was closer to National Mall. Rooms were very tight for a couple. Toilets only had seats like you see in public restrooms. Only one of two elevators worked. The beds were old where the center was caved in due to wear. If you are able to overlook these minor issues, then it’s a good place. We stayed for two nights and it met our needs.

Best price and best location! Its like staying in a private historical house. The hotel is so quiet, the rooms are cozy and comfortable, and since there is no commercial F and B activity, it's very private, like a house. And great value for this DC downtown location. Im happy this very historical building is in use and not overpriced like all other hotels in this immediate area. I wish there was tea and coffee in the rooms, and maybe an 'honesty' bar in the lobby for soft drinks, beer and wine. Suggestions for take away food would be good too, maybe some menus in the room or in the lobby.

The hallways smell like those really strong air fresheners they put in Ubers. The lighting is garish. Hallways are really dim. The only light in the bathroom is connected to the bathroom fan, which is about the loudest one I've ever heard. Oh, and the mattress is covered in plastic. Just seedy as all get out. That said, it is a pretty building from outside. Enjoy it from the street.

Arrived late by car. All garages nearby were closed and the reception staff were zero help in advising where I could park (hotel has no parking). Of the two elevators only one was working so delays in getting an elevator from the 5th floor to lobby in the morning was arduous. Saw an elevator service man later that day and he stated that the elevators were shot and both needed replacing. I was in room 509, which was tiny. The view from the bedroom window and bathroom window was a brick wall from the next door building approx 18” from the window. Staff are unfriendly. I would not stay here again.

Street noise from night club below room. I was on 7th floor in corner and patrons leaving bar at 2-3am carried the party onto the sidewalk. A discussion with bar owner about noise would be appropriate A thin wall is all that separated my room (707) from next door. On last night there were kids watching a loud TV past 12 midnight. Had to call to front desk to have them notify the occupants once midnight hit.

We came via train so we walked everywhere and it was a great location close to plenty of food and convenient stores as well as all of the sites we wanted to see. The hotel, being where it is, the age of the installations, and the price is excellent. But do not expect LARGE bedrooms, or a fully new bedroom (but the bathroom actually was quite new). If there is something against is that is noisy, and not from the street. The elevator, the bathroom fan, the a/c. But again, to be DOWNTOWN, I found it excellent

Good hotel but poor amenities. No pool, no vending. And poor security. My door lock requires my card to be repogrammed every few hours and the desk never asked for ID or to verify my room. The building itself is old, historic, and a bit run-down, with no amenities. But I booked a week for a business trip at a reasonable price and am happy with what I got. They have the rooms renovated at least, so you get a comfortable, clean place to stay after all. I would consider this place if you are on a budget. You get what you need. Reading the reviews before I arrived, I panicked a bit, but it is actually a comfortable place for a 3-star hotel.
- 3/5
The facilities were fine. Some businesses nearby, but there's not like a 24-hour CVS or anything, and there is no bottled water in the room, so make sure you bring a filtered water bottle or get water before you settle in for the night.

The other big issue that isn't necessarily the hotels fault, our neighbor in room 702 last night screamed, cried, cussed and threatened to blow people's heads off for over 2 hours. She was clearly having an mental episode. I had to reach out multiple times to the front desk. My daughter was terrified and it kept us up past 10pm as we shared a wall with her. But you cant choose your neighbors. The front desk was helpful in deescalating the ordeal. Otherwise I was very happy with our stay. The price, location, cleanliness and staff were all wonderful. We will definitely stay again!

I would rate my stay a 3.5. First, the cost to stay in downtown DC was unbeatable. The staff was wonderful, the hotel and especially the room was CLEAN - like I was very happy with the cleanliness, the rooms were a good size, and there was always coffee, tea, and water in the lobby. The hotel is a historic building, so it's both old and cool. One must know that this is not a modern hotel. My concerns with with my hot water and the noise from the window unit. I would still recommend this hotel and hopefully, someone wouldn't expect high-end amenities at a lower price point.

The room was clean, and they were great with upkeep. Hard to find good parking and don't expect a view—but the location is perfect! Main critique: Rooms don't have mini-fridges or microwaves. Deal breaker in the future.

It’s an okay economy hotel. My first night was weird since I kept bumping into rotten fruits in the hotel corridors and lobby. The escalator had bad odors and the AC was very noisy, however necessary since it was 30ºC outside.

Reception was poor with staff who were unwelcoming. We had to ask for WiFi code and it was a very weak signal. No coffee in room, shower curtain and blinds were broken. No hand soap just a little soap for shower. Very disappointed and won’t use again.

Terrible experience. Water didn't work upon check in for over 24 hours, when approaching the lady at the front desk during the day she laughed at me, said 'im just a happy person'. How are you laughing while guests are miserable without water? Stay away.

The hotel is older, but it is charming. The room was perfect for us for the night. We were on the 9th floor, and I was pleased with the water pressure in the shower--you never know when you are in an older building on the top floor. The bed was fine. The people at the desk were friendly and helpful. We go to DC a few times a year for concerts, and we would definitely stay here on a return trip.

The hotel is quite run down, sadly. It would be really cool if it were cleaned up because it is a retro style. I had everything I needed while in the room though, nothing broken or especially dirty inside. Just run down, like the other parts of the premises. The location is great - about 10 minutes to the main attractions in the city.

Older building but incredibly clean and nice staff. I'd definitely stay again!

This is at best a 2 star hotel. Such a shame. With the location could be much better experience.
- 5/5
The location was perfect it wasn't super expensive but it was so close to everything in downtown DC will definitely stay there again
- 4/5
Comfortable and clean
- 3/5
They do not have breakfast... So, Expedia should update this information.
- 4/5
This is good affordable hotel in a good location.
- 3/5
The building has a history, which is excellent for me. It's an older building, but it's in good condition. The staff was friendly. The room price was cheap. The bed was comfy. Bathrooms are relatively large. I have no problem revisiting the Architect! Thank you.
- 4/5

- 5/5

Great service. Beautiful rooms
- 5/5
Lovely old hotel with character. Clean warm comfortable room with great shower.Budget room no view from window. No coffee maker in room but available in lobby free. Would definitely stay here again if I revisit DC.
- 2/5
The hotel is the lowest price in the area and it is clear why. It is run like a 1990's family owned motel. It should advetise if it is actually family owned so people know what they are getting. One elevator was broken, the coffee machine in the lobby is like an old church percolator, the keys demagnatize if they are near your phone, and the sheets and towels are a little frayed. But there are kind hard working people running the hotel. The bed felt like a memory foam mattress. It was comfortable. The one major issue is the hotel requires a credit card for security but also charges a 3% credit card fee. This should not be allowed on Expedia. It is one thing to have a fee when you let people pay cash. But this is a hotel. If you are looking for a centrally-located affordable place to stay and you are comfortable with the simplicity and character (but not architecture) of a late 20th century motel, stay here.
- 5/5
The building is gorgeous. It's in a great area near the trains. The rooms are small but have everything you need. Would definitely stay again. My favorite hotel in DC.

Close to many attractions. Small, clean, charming rooms. Bed was terrible. If you're price conscious, it is not a bad place. .5 mile walk from the Farragut metro stations, that take you to Ragan airport.
- 4/5
I was in DC for business and I was basically just in and out of the hotel. This place accommodated that at a good rate and in the area I was doing business. The room was small but clean, ultimately all I needed.
- 3/5
It was ok but the security deposit is taking too long to be back
- 5/5
My room was clean and comfortable. Perfect for my quick business trip to D.C. I was able to walk to my venue, so it was the perfect location. Close to many restaurants and a very safe area.
- 5/5
Beautiful historic building.Quiet comfortable warm clean safe. 5 min from metro easy to get to museums all attractions waterfront etc. Lovely room excellent budget price. Only drawback view from window brickwall which made it dark. No coffee facilities in room. Bring travel kettle an coffee sorted. If I return to DC I will definitely stay there.

- 4/5

- 5/5
Nice and quiet place, close to white house
- 5/5
wish they had ice water in the lobby area, one of the elevators was down, also wish there was a refrigerator in the room but overall GREAT
- 4/5
Tiny, no view in window
- 4/5
The Architect is an excellent value -- nice comfy rooms, friendly staff, and an outstanding location.
- 5/5
We knew this was the lowest priced hotel in DC, so our expectations were low. But we just needed a place to sleep. However, the front desk was ready for us. Very pleasant woman sang to us while checking us in. Everyone that worked the front desk was super nice! Our room was perfect. Full size bed, great closet & bathroom. Very clean. Our only concern was that housekeeping came in to make the bed and clean the room even though we didn't put the door hang out asking for it. We didn't want anyone in the room, but they came in any way. Check out was a breeze. Parking on the streets is free on the weekends. We walked to the White House, and several other destinations. It was a great surprise to have a great place to crash out and regroup!! Will definitely stay here when we come back!!
- 4/5
The room is super clean but there is too strong chemicals for cleaning like beach. I must turned on ventilator whole night. Staff is very nice. The cost is reasonable. It closes to Metro train and the White House and the national mall.
- 2/5
when we arrived around 2am, and the staff offered no help at all with parking. We were told to move our car by 7am to a private garage, which was very inconvenient after a late arrival. On top of that, the pillows were extremely uncomfortable.
- 5/5
Distance to the Whitehouse and cost

- 5/5
Nice little hotel in walking distance to White House and the Mall. Excellent value.
- 5/5
It was a great stay, mostly recommended!
- 5/5
This was a much better hotel experience than I planned or expected.
- 4/5
Old but nice.
- 5/5
It was affordable price with convenient location.
- 2/5
no water coffee or milk.. basic needs..
- 3/5
Felt very humid and muggy in my room, did not sleep well, drove back home to VA my second night just because I wanted decent sleep. Allergies were acting up in my room as if something was as in the walls. Love the coziness and cost effectiveness but I was just not comfortable this time.
- 4/5
Cheap and in good location near the gay clubs. Old small creaky elevator. Smells a bit weird throughout. Older buildingsl.
- 4/5
This was good value for the room. It had the basics and the staff were friendly.
- 2/5
No coffee maker, refrigerator in rooms. Mattresses are noisy, and one working elevator that stops on floors nobodies at or door closes and then opens back up on your same floor, oh and coffee in lobby taste like it’s 3 days old! Oh and toilet seat and water delivery in back broke. Do not stay!
- 5/5
Everything was in walking distance. I would definitely stay here again
- 1/5
No staff to open door and check in past like 11pm. It was a scary experience of being locked out.
- 5/5
The area was walkable and very close to inportant monuments in DC.
- 5/5
Unique style of the hotel
- 5/5
24/7 staff were great and helpful
- 5/5
This was the cutest hotel. Nothing fancy. Nothing extra. But great location and no complaints from me.
- 5/5
Nice, clean, quiet, convenient. No frills but if you are spending a lot of time walking in DC all you need is a good bed and our room met that need.
- 5/5
They allow early check-in for reasonable fee. Awesome.
- 3/5
The smell was just bad
- 4/5
It was nice
- 5/5
Perfect
- 5/5
We really enjoyed our stay here. The room was clean and the hotel was close to attraction sites.
- 4/5
Nice hotel downtown. Bathroom was clean. Rooms are not large, they’re great for a place to sleep.
- 5/5
A little noisy in the morning
- 3/5
Building is old with some updates. Quite place for crashing few nights.
- 5/5
No hotel parking sad
- 5/5
Close clean and quiet.
- 3/5
No good
- 5/5
We needed last minute room for one night and the Architect delivered. We appreciated that the front desk staff was on duty 24 hours. Our room was spacious and clean, if sparse but did have a closet with safe and ironing board. Location is excellent - close to Metro station, buses, plenty of restaurants, etc
- 5/5
Excellent
- 4/5
A very confortable hotel close to the White House and with a metro line that brings you straight to the airport. I highly recommend it.
- 5/5
it was worth it
- 5/5
The environment is good, and the receptionist at the front desk is very good.
- 4/5
Joelle night desk guy was rude with zero personality. The morning team was great! Room was old and tiny but clean. Low price so to be expected. Good location!
- 4/5
Great minimal room in a convenient location. Coffee, tea and microwave in yhe lobby. It would be nice if they would consider adding a cube fridge to yhe rooms. Rooms are small- nondrawers to put away clothes- historic building close to bus, metro museums, etc.
- 5/5
The stay was great! The pillows, however, were awful!! Only complaint at all. Too flat and thin. Staff was great. Room was clean! Shower was great!
- 5/5
Overall, not a bad stay. I was only there for about 4 nights, room was a on the smaller side but the bed was comfortable and I had an excellent view of the city from my room. Only complaint I had was that the keycard repeatedly failed to work after housekeeping left the room and I had to constantly go to the front desk to get it sorted. Not a bad spot, would stay again.
- 2/5
The hotel is dated and dingy, but the staff kept it clean. There is not much giing on in that part of town on a weekend, as it is a M-F biz area. No parking options were provided, and DC is very tricky to park in.
- 4/5
The front desk is not friendly
- 3/5
7or 8 steps down to the lobby. No ramp to help with luggage. Only one ice machine in the basement. Employees friendly, the overnight clerk was very good and helped us with our luggage at checkout. Only one working elevator. Location good, within 30 minutes walking distance to White House, Ford’s Theater. Bed not comfortable but acceptable. Good price, we paid approximately $600 for 6 nights. Don’t know if we would stay there again but maybe.
- 3/5
The location gave a unique and vintage style of space but the room was small and the amenities were non-existent. No complimentary breakfast or real tv channel selection. But because it was located in such a great spot downtown none of those things mattered because I wasn’t there to stay in the room. So for the purpose of just showering and laying my head down it did what it was supposed to do. If you are trying to relax in the room all day and you want more selection this place isn’t for you but if you are there to explore the city the location is perfect as everything is relatively walking distance. Washington monument was less than a mile away and Howard was 10 minutes away if you drive. Overall experience was great for what I needed for. The staff was also kind and welcoming
- 3/5
.
- 1/5
Terrible property. Toilet didn’t flush, elevator was out of service, glade plugins everywhere hiding some smell, and a very loud window unit AC
- 3/5
If it weren’t for the great location, the review would be a 1.
- 5/5
The architect, met and surpassed my needs . Friendly Comfortable Convenient Affordable Walkable Rooms are small but they’re plenty big enough
- 2/5
Room was clean and fine. AC was set to 60 in the room (and about 45 in the hallways of the hotel). electricity must be cheap in DC.. everywhere I went was like this.. I assume to knock down the humidity. Shower had no hot water. Let it run for 20 minutes and finally gave up. was late to airport because of trying to get hot water and staff not being able to get the lift to work to get my suitcase out of the lobby. She finally helped me carry it up the stairs.
- 5/5
Very clean
- 3/5
I would return to this hotel. But it is always disapointing when a cockroach welcomes you to the room.
- 5/5
Great confirmed old hotel from the art deco era. Very clean and comfortable with small rooms.
- 5/5
The ambiance and how near it is to the White House
- 5/5
nice,clean and friendly hotel
- 1/5
this was the worst hotel I've stayed easily. Avoid it at all costs. dirty and outdated along with the worst customer service ive experienced in my life
- 4/5
It is no frills but is very, very clean. Close to a lot of food options. If you are not looking for a resort feel (free breakfast, coffee, etc.), this is the hotel for you!
- 3/5
Noisy air conditioning which was only 18 inches away from the bed. Internet was very slow. The location was good. Close to everything we wanted.
- 5/5
Large room
- 4/5
This is a nice hotel to stay in for a week. However, I wish the room was equipped with a fridge.
- 3/5
Very good location for walking
- 4/5
Still in great condition and kept to the old look
- 4/5
Good value for the amount paid, walking distance to metro and food options available nearby. Rooms not huge, but big enough for 2 x cases.

Bedbugs. What else matters? The properties photos are decades old. Lobby furniture looks dusty, dirty. 2 person creaky elevator. Sheets.... mottled cream, I think they might have been white 6 yrs ago. Clearly stained. I had to change rooms due to hair dryer blew up. Blue electrical sparks, burned red hot orange, smoked, suddenly made metal grinding sound. Was barely able to unplug. 2nd room had bedbugs. Covered my body. Disgusting.Itching all over, even scalp. Exposed plumbing pipes in wall/floor.bedside lamp flickered, indicates an electrical short. This a dirty, health hazzard, firehazard dump.Bedbugs. What else matters? Great for the price. Staff was very friendly and the room was as expected and clean. Very convenient location. The ONLY reason it doesn’t get the full 5 stars is the pillows are not comfortable.
- 5/5
Conveniently located next to a metro stop and near the National Mall. The room was small, but had everything we needed. Hotel was clean and area safe. Would stay at the hotel again.
- 5/5
I forgot the name of the woman that checked me in but she was over the top courteous and polite. She made my stay here awesome. Next time I come to DC I will stay here!
- 5/5
Amazing
- 5/5
Great location. Clean room. Not the most comfortable bed, and there were few amenities on the property, but the price was reasonalbe and it felt safe.
