This was quite the little surprise. This house was awesome. The owners of this property were great!! We were met at the door, as we pulled into the drive. If we are ever in this area, I will stay here again.

The innkeepers were friendly and accomodating. The location was perfect for our planned activities at nearby state parks. We appreciate the adaptive reuse of an historic structure.

We really liked the couple that run this B&B. They do all they can to make your stay great. It is differently not make for longer stays then a few nights No tv in room, had to share a bathroom, we were in the up stairs bedroom, hard stairs to climb and the most hardest thing was we had to be quite all the time like at 7pm we were asked to be quiet.

The hostess was delightful! The location, in the country and during peak season for beaches, was perfect for us. It was central to each area we visited.

My room was clean and very comfortable and the innkeepers were welcoming and friendly. Some of the reviews had me a little worried but I am glad I disregarded them. I will stay there again when I go to Norfolk.

This is an out-of-the-way B&B. It looks run down on the outside, but it was quite nice. The owners were very friendly and accommodating.

All reservations done via on-line registration through an offshore provider who is not friendly. Did not see a phone number on the website. Did not feel open, relaxing, or particularly welcome. Felt like we had to stay in bedroom or kitchen. Require guests to haul away their own trash! Room was hot. Sleep Number mattress in a waterbed frame, but firmness control did not work. Bathroom marginally clean. Kitchen use allowed, but BYO food and pots and dishes.

Sunbury is one of many quiet little towns with long histories in the region, and while it has few stores, it offers lovely country drives to places of interest from Edenton and Hertford to Murfreesboro, and even Suffolk Virginia. It sits on the edge of the Great Dismal Swamp, with all of its natural and historic tours and activities. The Swamp was a major link in the Underground Railroad. Nearby Scotland Neck boasts an interesting bird sanctuary, with thousands of birds from around the world. The Teacherage itself has a fascinating history, which our hosts were enthusiastic to share. We felt right at home there, got great sleep, great food, and enjoyed the very special ambiance of this bucolic North Carolina bed and breakfast!

Our stay at the Teacherage was pretty much what we expected. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of light for reading in the room. The private bath room was tiny and the sink was in the room rather than in the bathroom. However, it was helpful to have a toilet nearby in the night as we are an older couple. The hostess was very nice seemed eager to help us if we needed any help.

(To qualify, I did not eat the food, but was required to leave a score. I'm sure it's delicious though)

I would recommend this to a friend with one caveat. If you are looking for a fancy upscale inn this is not your place. If you are looking for a simple place with soul then you'll feel at home.

The bed was super comfortable but the room stayed pretty warm the entire time we were there (July). I never could connect to the wifi and cell signal is non existent for AT&T. Be prepared to travel at least 15-20 minutes for food. Perfect location to visit Dismal Swamp and Merchants Millpond State Parks. Everyone was very friendly.

Confusion on breakfast procedure the first day but better the next. Had some ants the first day. Rain the next day took are of that. Didn't see anyone until breakfast the second day. Not much interaction.Advertises view of garden but not sure where that was. Couldn't use the shower next to our room. Had to go downstairs for a shower. Upstairs bath was quite muggy and hot. Sitting or social rooms were not available for use most of the time. I would like to give it another try if it is brought up to what is advertised.

Brenda and Graham were very sociable and understanding of our late arrival. Very peaceful place and wished we could have stayed longer.

I was late due to a late start and then getting lost. One of the hosts waited for me to arrive!! The service was superb, the price very reasonable, and the stay was excellent. The room was huge, the bathroom immaculately clean, and the bed&breakfast was lovely. I came for business, and plan to have my family stay here on a future vacation!

Driving in the gravel driveway and seeing an unkept lawn and non existent landscaping should have been our first clue! We walked up into an equally old and unkept porch. Upon entering the house the mold smell was overwhelming . Brenda who was very friendly showed us to our room. The room was of adequate size but the bathroom was ridiculously small with the sink in the bedroom....and still the mold smell ! By this time we talked to Brenda and told her we couldn't stay since my husband has a severe mold allergy(he was already coughing and we'd been there 20 minutes). Overall to be on a bed and breakfast site we expect a higher level of ...well...everything. As a side note we called the help line of B and B.com and requested our money back.....they tried to call then and didn't get through even though we had just left and know Brenda was there. So now four days later we have not heard from B and B .com and have not gotten our money back. I've read the reviews of this place and all I can think is that the nice personalities of the hostess and host made everyone overlook everything else.
- 3/5
Brenda and Graham are super sweet and friendly. Not a whole lot to do when it's excruciatingly hot out, but Merchant's Millpond is right there, and the drive to VA Beach is roughly an hour. Warning: There is a cat indoors! Which my allergies found out sooner than later.

Just passing through, found a cheap place to stay on my way to Maryland, so I bunked at the B&B. The owners were fantastic, very nice and warm people. My only complaint was the fact that there wasn't much air circulation, or a ceiling fan, which made it a little hard for me to get to sleep. I'll know next time to bring a small fan. Otherwise, fantastic experience and wouldn't change a thing!

Our stay at the Teacherage was absolutely perfect! The owners Brenda and Graham really do an awesome job! They made us feel very welcomed at their cosy bed and breakfast place. The old house is very unique and charming and we loved it the minute we stepped inside. The delicious and rich breakfast was being served on the lovely porch every morning. The Teacherage is located perfectly when you want to visit the Outer Banks as well as enjoy the back country. Brenda and Graham always had wonderful recommendations for fun things to do and provided us with maps and leaflets. After staying at the Teacherage for almost a week we didn't feel like checking out at a hotel but rather like saying good bye to some new found friends.

A day later, I was even more thankful to our innkeepers for finding and letting me know I had left a unique silver ring behind. I felt so bad that on our way back home we ended up swinging by for the ring rather early on a Sunday to pick it up but can't thank Brenda and Graham enough for letting me know I left it. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Without the backstory, I booked with The Teacherage and had to cancel on the same day. I had used PayPal (which I recommend) and had a debit card in that service. My refund was delivered to my bank account in less than 10 days (counting a weekend). I ended up re-booking with them within a couple of days. Everything went through without a hitch.I also had to call Bed and Breakfast.com for some help and was pleased with their service as well. The inn was just as it appeared on the site. It was a really beautiful little place. We stayed 2 nights and were pleased to see 2 to 3 other couples had booked both nights. Unfortunately, our plans did not allow us to take in the restful quality of this little gem, but we were more than satisfied that we had found a good deal and some great new friends. I have no complaints, so the following is for informational purposes only. The rooms and inn were IMMACULATE. We had the room with the private bath. It was tiny but very functional. Be careful, the shower floor is very slick. We stayed in the worst part of summer, and since the rooms are individually cooled and heated, it was a little warm but cooled off. Pulling the drapes during the day helped a lot on the 2nd night. Our plans took us to Chesapeake/Suffolk area, and the 35-45 mile drive was quick and very beautiful. Would not recommend staying here if you were going much further as it is in rural NC but included in the Chesapeake MPA. We would stay here again, without a doubt. Graham and Brenda have done an outstanding job with this little diamond in the rough.

The B&B was a beautiful old home, but that is the extent of positives I can say. There no AC during our stay it was over 90 degrees everyday over 100 two days, we had to pay extra for AC if we wanted it. MThe room at night was so stuffy and hot, my wife and I could not breathe let alone sleep. My wife is pregnant with twins, didn't matter to them. We were the only ones staying at the time and the hotel was creepy. If you stay in the first floor it is a communal bathroom, and on the 4th day we were there, somebody went in our room when we were there and closed the windows and turned off all the fans. Breakfast was not included in our stay it an extra charge. Plus there was a mysterious charge on my credit card over and above what I paid for room. Outer Banks are an hour and a half away, Virginia Beach was over an hour away. Do not stay here.

Conveniently located 6 or so miles from the entrance to Merchants Millpond State Park. The history of the site and adjacent property is fascinating. The owners were super nice and knowledgeable of the area. Great Stay

Arrived around 5 pm on rainy, drab Sunday. Brenda offered/served delicious coffee/hot tea and lite snacks in parlor. She graciously answered my questions about the B&B, it's history, and it's acquisition. Our itinerary for the two day stay was almost non-existent since the trip was made on impulse. Graham's suggestion to visit The Hermitage in Norfolk suited our interests perfectly. With the improving weather, hikes we took through the Dismal Swamp and Merchants Mill Pond State Park made the visit to the area delightful. Our room in The Teacherage was clean, interesting and the bed comfortable. The breakfast in the dining room at 8:30 each morning consisted of eggs, delicious zucchini bread, cinnamon roll, yogurt, toast, orange juice, coffee, tea, ham, sliced cheese, cereal, milk, jam. We certainly enjoyed our brief stay, and appreciated the reasonable rates for the room. If making reservations on line, include in the comments if you would like breakfast.

I now have to make last-minute reservations. Awful customer service on this site's and Teacherage's behalf.

It was my best stay on a road trip through the eastern coast

I live about 35 minutes away from the Teacherage and I had no idea it existed. I wanted to do something special for my girlfriend on Valentine's Day. So instead of staying home, I searched for a home away from home. I decided that hotels were too impersonal, so a bed and breakfast was ideal for us. Their prices for room and breakfast are very reasonable, if not a steal! My girlfriend and I, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I was able to pass along some local gossip to Graham and Brenda; and they made me feel very welcomed in Sunbury, NC. I highly recommend booking a stay at the Teacherage, if you are ever in the area!

The owners were very nice. But we wouldn't go back.

We'll definitely stay again when we come to the area.

We spent a lovely evening out on the side porch, having a small cocktail with Graham, listening to the crickets and enjoying the breeze. The next morning we opted for our breakfast on the same porch and our hosts served up a wonderful European style breakfast that left us both satisfied, filled and happy without being stuffed. Truly this is the way a B&B should be run - we highly recommend it if you find yourself anywhere in the area. It's well worth the visit.
- 4/5
Perfect location for us to stop, we had the place to ourselves as we were the only guests, first b+b I have ever stayed at so hard to compare, but I would stay there again, Graham and Brenda were very friendly and helpful, and our breakfast outside on the porch was great, got advice on our bicycle route from Graham that worked out very well
- 5/5
Grahm and Brenda were very nice and interesting to talk to. My son and I were bicycle touring and found this place along the route. Excellent price and very comfy room and bed. We had the breakfast in the morning to get us on the road. Would definitely stop there again.

We chose The Teacherage because we needed to be in Gates County and the price was very affordable. Our event was 7 miles south of The Teacherage, the closest place available. It is unique with some history to add charm. Graham and Brenda are very nice, smart and energetic. They were very interested in our well being. The outside needs alot of work, maybe they are trying to keep the antique look. It was very clean. We missed having A/C. I just assumed there would be A/C. The 3 summer evenings were rather mild and with our fan I was OK but my wife was not. If I could have cancelled my reservation, I would have. Graham and Brenda offered a gift certificate to accomodate. There is no TV, but I didn't really miss it. My ATT network cell phone did not work. They have wireless internet that was OK. Maybe in another year after more improvements, it will become the wonderful overnight experience envisioned. It probably would be fine in the fall, winter and spring and if you are in the area, I would give it a try. We had breakfast one morning on the veranda. It was good with fresh baked bread from the nearby bakery and we enjoyed meeting their other guests.
- 3/5
You get what you pay for. I selected The Teacherage to see what I would get for so low a price. I got a clean room in an old house operated by a nice young couple. I did not get TV, A/C, or a 3-prong wall outlet for my laptop. If I had not been the only guest that night, I would have shared a bathroom with the other guests.

Management was very friendly

It was very nice, surely not all the amenities of a modern hotel/motel, but perfect for my trip. Enjoyed it very much. Would stay there again, for sure.

My wife and I wanted a quiet relaxing weekend getaway with an opportunity to do some hiking. This nice bed and breakfast is conveniently located between Merchants Mill State Park and Dismal Swamp State Park. I'm very glad it was here!
