Reviews
The hotel is praised for its friendly and helpful staff, cleanliness, and convenient location, but is criticized for its uncomfortable beds, lack of amenities, and noisy, unsafe surroundings. The hotel is often described as a hostel rather than a hotel, and guests frequently mention the presence of homeless people and drug addicts in the area.

It's SF - if you've ever been and know downtown Tenderloin District - it's not the best location, BUT, having said that, this building is quite clean. Once you get in, it's quiet. The hallways are clean. The room was basic, what else do you need? Clean hardwood floors, bed and sink with TV. I was uneasy about the shared bathrooms, but there are two showers and two toilets on each floor - both well maintained and cleaned. I had no issues at all. The purpose of SF, is to leave and explore so I was only there for the sleep each night. I would book it again - check in was easy and the staff were really friendly. If you're looking for clean accommodation downtown and priced well - this is your place!

Very Responsive Staff, Very clean and functional interior. Location in the Tenderloin. Lot's of homeless addicts and drug use in the surrounding area.

There were bed bugs. The neighbourhood had a lots of homeless people who play loud music in the middle of night. Couldn’t sleep at all.
- 3.5/5
Staff was wonderful. My room was a little bit delayed getting ready, but the fix was very quick. I liked that the room was safely away from the main areas. It's as clean as 100 year old buildings can be in SF. Some minor spots of concern, but good air quality, no mold, etc. Its the best stay than any hotel you can get on 6th, certainly. Great for the price and in a pinch, as I had to reassign last minute. While the location isn't great, it's only a few steps away from Market, so as long as you use Market and not continue going down 6th to get anywhere, it's safe. 6th Street has the homeless shelter, which makes it the street and onward for a lot of homeless to congregate. As long as you're polite and mind your own business, they mind their own business as well. But as a result, nights are noisy, and the area is concerning.

Needed a place to stay that was reasonably priced. Staff was great and the room and facilities were clean, well lit, and maintained. The drug addled vagrants who were encamped outside the door was not a good situation. Rooms are dorm style which is alright if you’re used to that setup. No A/C and because of the vagrants there was non-stop sirens, music, and shouting from the street four stories below.

Staff members were nice although charged me $5 to keep my luggage safe for a few hours. The location is next to a homeless shelter and you have a crowd of homeless people at the entrance of the building usually. If you have never seen homeless of SF be prepared. My most complaint was the noise and the smell in the room coming from a bakery/factory in front of the window. I managed to sleep through it but I hated it.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, this place is perfect. Everything was clean, quiet, and comfortable — exactly what you need for a pleasant stay There are many homeless people in the area, but this is clearly a city-wide issue, not related to the hotel itself. The responsibility lies with the local authorities, not the property

It's located in a part of SF with homeless people everywhere. We didn't realize there are not bathrooms in the room...This is a hostel more than a hotel. I didn't shower because I didn't know where it was, but luckily the shared toilet is just down the hall. I was locked outside at 3am for over an hour because I couldn't get inside. I wasn't told the scan the key outside above the door to open it after 12am. The rest of the time we were told to buzz in and be let in. I tried calling to be let in and no one answered. Homeless people on drugs were screaming all night outside my window. Saving grace is that the room was clean and the man at the front desk was very nice, but I would never in a million years step foot in here again.

The room was small but clean and I appreciated having a private bathroom, which was also nice and tidy. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay. The shared kitchen was convenient – I used the microwave once and it worked well. It’s also centrally located and close to the Powell BART station, which made getting around the city easy. The hotel felt more like a hostel and while I had requested a desk to work remotely, there wasn’t one – just a dresser I had to use instead, which wasn’t comfortable. The pillows were very uncomfortable and the noise from 6th Street made it hard to sleep – the soundproofing was quite poor. The surrounding area was by far the biggest downside: it felt unsafe at night, with a heavy homeless presence, dirty streets, bad smells, and constant noise from sirens.

The fire alarm panel was beeping for the entire duration of my stay, 2 days. The fan in my room had a knocking sound, when I spoke to the staff about this, their only solution was to switch off the fan if it was making a noise. Poor service, the noise kept me up all night for 2 days.
- 3/5
The people working there were nice. My only concern is the homelessness around. I know that is out of their control, but that poses some security issues for any individual. Thankfully, people who don't stay there don't easily get access in.
- 4/5
Hotel is great value for what you are paying. £43 per night in a hotel right in downtown San Francisco is very cheap compared to other hotels nearby imo. You are close to many landmarks as well as bars and restaurants and right next to a BART station. The person I dealt with on arrival at reception was also very friendly. The surrounding area isn't the best with lots of homeless people walking around the street at night after 10pm and I did hear some noise from the street while sleeping. Make sure to bring a pair of ear plugs for the latter and that should solve that problem. There is nothing the hotel can do though about the homeless people out on the street and anyways they don't bother you as long as you don't engage with them. For what I paid I didnt get a toilet or shower, these were shared but they were always available when I wanted to use them.

Estaba limpia la habitación y era espaciosa. Pero en general el hotel no estaba limpio
- 2/5
I stayed here before, years ago but now its worse- Homeless and drug users camping on the street in front, being very loud all hours until PD runs them off about 4am. No ice, no AC, no room fridge. Windows had not been cleaned in months and were literally caked with dirt. Hotel has VERY little water pressure- room and showers. Then they waited four days after checking out and hit me with a $25 charge for a "stained washcloth" without trying to contact me. Save yourself a huge hassle and stay somewhere else
- 3/5
The rooms, towels, washrooms are clean, just dated and a bit run down. You really get what you pay for. It was a good deal on the hotel room but note you are in a bit of a sketchier area. The staff are friendly and helpful. Bring ear plugs if you want to sleep at night.
- 4.5/5
Location was great geographically close to BART / Muni. Room was clean, and I booked the room with the private bathroom. Outside was pretty sketchy at night. Could’ve used a single chair in my room (had to pull the desk to the bed in order to use it) and a few hangers in the closet would’ve been useful.
- 3/5
The price is reasonable—about $60 per night. You’ll have your own private room while sharing the bathroom and toilets. The room door has a sturdy smart lock, which feels secure and safe. The light in the room is enough for reading. The bathroom is small—just enough space to stand, and it’s difficult to change clothes without touching the walls. The ventilation in the bathroom is also inadequate. My room is too close to the trash cans, and one day I saw a small cockroach inside (attach picture). The chair in the room is old and wobbly. Outside, the building is on a main street where 5–10 homeless people are usually present each day, though they seem friendly. I would suggest that the landlord either empty the trash on each floor daily or move the trash bins outside of building.
- 3/5
Tiny and uncomfortable for a relatively low price. Staff were friendly enough, although they did the bare minimum.
- 5/5
For a very reasonable price, it covers all your basic needs. Staff are wonderful too!

Staff was great

No A/C . Window open did help to cool the room down but you heard all the street noise . Homeless were pushed down from above 6th Street and above to 6th Street and below. Not the hotel's fault they do keep you safe in and around the hotel

Simple and basic amenities Located near area in Tenderloin. Lots of homeless people outside the hotel. Lots of street commotion and police activity at night. Not very safe for visitors with family.
- 4/5
The room was very clean the staff was very nice friendly.. the area is like horror movie. I will not be coming back to many ppl walking around out side doing drugs like walking zombies. But the price was good. Still not coming back
- 3/5
The place was average. The lights shut off serval times when I had only the fan and my phone pulled in. The place is decent and the worst thing was the homeless people that appeared from 9 pm til morning. It’s very convenient for public transportation. Overall it’s a 5 out of 10
- 4/5
Good price for the quality. It was clean and close to everything.
- 2/5
This hotel was in terrible neighborhood. Homeless were surrounding the hotel. It was very scary at night. They had roaches. The bed was hard as a brick!
- 2/5
No hangers or wardrobe, no microwave and fridge.
- 5/5
Had a blast, cute lil hostel. Fantastic old elevators! My friend an I were very pleased with our stay!
- 4/5
Friendly staff and clean facilities. This place is surprisingly cheap for San Francisco. The neighborhood is of course fairly sketchy, but you feel safe inside. I’ve stayed here twice, and it was surprisingly quiet given the neighborhood.
- 5/5
The value for money is excellent. For this price, it is a wonderful place in the center. Of course, there are many homeless people around, but that is not the hotel’s fault — it is a problem of the city There are a huge number of homeless people around, but this is an issue for the city authorities, not the hotel.
- 4/5
Price, safety despite questionable neighborhood, location to public transportation Neighborhood was a bit questionable

it was a very pleasent stay clean staff was cool only thing was all the dopeheads outside

A lot of homeless
- 4/5
A surprise find in the mid-market/ union square-ish/soma area. So I lived in SF for almost 30 years and there are a couple of places in this big city (
- 4/5
Sure the immediate streets are full of sketchy peeps, but door is only 60 feet from Market St. So the gauntlet is brief. For the money the room was great and staff are nice, plus there is an elevator and tv in the rooms. For a similar price the Bowery Grand in NYC doesn't come close to this fine hotel.
- 5/5
The staff are kind and very helpful. Grateful
- 4/5
The room was clean. There's no parking at the hotel, so parking is inconvenient.
- 5/5
The staff are AMAZING. Everyone was kind and helpful. I loved the proximity to night life and cultural districts. Public transit was abundant in the area and we were able to reach any place we needed to go. This is one of the cleanest and comfiest hostels I’ve stayed at.
- 5/5
Not the fanciest hotel but it’s affordable. Area outside has a high volume of people living on the street and is noisy but feels safe while inside. Staff are friendly and bed was comfortable. Curtain rod had some maintenance issues and water pressure was terrible. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay though I’d choose somewhere else if I had the budget
- 5/5
Hotel is a diamond in the ruff
- 3/5
Hotel is definitely worth the value though and at least its close to the Powell BART station and walking distance to the mall (if that's still around in the future) and Union Square.
- 3/5
They don’t clean rooms after you check in, staff is very friendly and helpful. The block is full of homeless though.
- 5/5
With the location I was weary however the entire hotel is clean, safe & the office manager Joʻse was more than customer service oriented. I was impressed from the strart, rooms are basic however clean & perfect for a nomad like myself to rest while traveling. I was so impressed I decided to extend my stay as I was supposed to check into another hotel but decided to stay. This Hotel is a true version & meaning of "a diamond in the rough". Great staff with great attitudes! I booked quick & did not notice I choose a room w/shared bathroom but this hotel is so clean & calm I did not mind. I will be placing the Winsor Hotel on a must stay when I'm traveling through. & YOU CAN NOT OUTDUE THE PRICE. $$$ Thank you for the exsperience.

Friendly front desk. Always smiling. I love his energy. Very friendly. He deserves a raise for good employee like him
- 1/5
The area is so bad I didn’t even stay there… I was scared to even get off the car. Do not book here
- 5/5
Better than I expected. I never had to wait for the shared facilities. The room is a bit aged but very functional. It is between two Bart stations with homeless on the street. The staff is welcoming.
- 1/5
horrible and creepy
- 1/5
There were two dead roaches on our bed, the bed is really squeaky and barely has any sheets on them. The bathroom somehow always had pee all over the seat unless you go there in the morning right after they clean it. About three times in one night did the cops and ambulance come by the neighborhood. Area smelled like pee. Wouldn’t recommend honestly just pay for a better place.
- 4/5
good.
- 3/5
Shared bathroom. Ok bed. Great if you can get it cheap.
- 5/5
The Winsor Hotel has been renovated well. The room was nice, spacious, with chair, sink, clothes rack, chest of drawers and a small desk. The double bed is very comfortable. A nice place to stay on a budget. I like old fashioned. Nice people. Homeless people on the street,
- 2/5
The rooms are kept clean and the staff is helpful. The mattress was low quality, with springs that can be felt when laying on it. There was a large (100 people) gathering of homeless people across the street at night and the noise could be heard clearly in the room.
- 5/5
Very friendly staff. Room is clean. Love the old elevator. Close to different restaurants. Close to 2 bart stations.
- 4/5
It was the cheapest we can find for a week and at such a late notice. It isn’t in the great part of the city but for a location it is in a great area convenience wise. The hotel was clean and friendly. It is a shared bathroom and shower area so you only have the privacy of your room. but overall not too bad. Might try again if I ever end up in the area again. Thank you!
- 5/5
Really nice and clean room, bathrooms were all clean as well, only concern is the area, its pretty sketchy when its dark out but overall would will back
- 5/5
Very good service and very clean room
- 2/5
The area around the hotel is not ideal to stay in. Lots of homeless, and drug users (had a couple of them threaten me) while I was walking around. Hotel condition was okay. I’d only recommend it for solo travellers, but be very VERY self aware in the area. Not to mention lots of crap, and stuff on the ground too.
- 1/5
I didn't like a thing about this hotel. There is no heat in the room. If, you show up late to check in you won't be allowed in the front door. Don't even ask them for help. It's not going to happen. The elevator doesn't work from street level to the reception area. So, you have to crawl up a flight of stairs with your luggage. Don't hope for help from the staff. Most of the rooms do not have a private bathroom. Bathrooms are down the hall. The tv does not work and there isn't a remote control to use it. Very small shower stall with hardly room to turn around in.
- 2/5
Many homeless near property

Street at front entrance full of homeless people and doped up drug users. Not one or two. Several dozens of them.

I made the reservation on line and paid but when I got there they demanded my credit cards and an additional 250 dollars and a physical credit card I only had Apple Pay so they didn’t accept it and I didn’t get my room now I am stuck in San Francisco with no room because I wasn’t able to get my reservation for not having something I didn’t have I wish I would of known I would of rented from another hotel
- 4/5
Nice front check in staff, The hotel room had a nice bed, Cable, TV and Internet. Very basic accommodations. The surrounding area of the hotel is not the best and yes, there are homeless people there, But I never had a problem day or night coming and going from the hotel. you do get a lot of noise from the streets I would bring earplugsI would stay there again
- 3/5
If you want something cheap and is not looking for anything fancy, then this hotel is for you. Just be prepared with the people around the area especially at night. This was just not it for me as im traveling alone.
- 3/5
Heating is not working and at night it’s very cold
- 5/5
obviously this property isn't located in the best part of town, but despite that we had a great stay. the staff is amazing and so helpful. the room was great. the bed was small but doable for two people. we felt safe in our hotel. at night it does get loud and rowdy but as long as you keep your wits abkjt you it's fine. everyone was honestly very nice to us. we were two female travelers.
- 5/5
The property in itself was super clean and located geographically in a great spot, it’s also right above a restaurant open 24/7. The bathrooms were clean and never busy. The area itself has a lot of homeless people, which is not the hotel’s fault, but they mind their own business, just don’t engage.
- 5/5
Service is Good.

Just was unsatisfied with this Hotel all around
- 3/5
gun shots went off outside.
- 3/5
A very clean, nice, basic shower-down-the-hall hotel. If it were in any other neighborhood, I would give it five stars. Unfortunately, it is fentanyl central after dark.
- 4/5
Hotel is good but outside on the street there are many many homeless doing drugs it is crazy.. I was afraid.

Very unprofessional establishment, please for your safety DO NOT stay at this hotel!
- 4/5
so I know the area.. seams there is more homeless people.. inside of the hotel is nice.. would change the carpet in entrance 😀
- 4/5
Firstly where can you get two nights in SF for 100$ that said I’m guy traveling alone with a small backpack and all I needed was a comfy bed and they fulfilled that. Easy to check in, desk guy was kind, room was clean but it’s like a private room hostel. Sink in my room, toilet and shower down the hall. No complaints there. The surrounding area at dusk gets very hectic. That area has always had a ton of homeless. That didn’t bother me I just walk thru it. You’re going to want earplugs even with the window closed it can be noisy outside Friday and Saturday nights. I’d stay again, close to BART and Muni.
- 3/5
You get what you pay for. It was cleanish and seemed safe once inside and the guy on reception was friendly.
- 5/5
Thank you Winsor for the easy overnight stay!
- 3/5
The property itself is decently well, for the price and location. The staff was very friendly. The room is clean and sufficient. This was a last minute overnight booking for us. The bed is poor quality- like sleeping on a box spring. The walls are very thin and you can hear everything around you. Including all the cop cars and unhoused people outside (even at 4 am). The room itself served it's purpose on a budget. We did greatly appreciate that the hotel is locked so randoms can't just come in. Felt safe because outside it doesn't. Happy with the stay- but not the best surrounding area.
- 5/5
Good place for the money, location is borderline with homeless hordes, but if you dont mind it's fine.
- 5/5
While the area outside the hotel is a bit grimy, with many homeless individuals and drug addicts around, we didn’t encounter any problems. Despite the surroundings, the interior of the hotel is surprisingly nice and feels like a peaceful escape from the outside. However, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone who has trouble with stairs, as check-in is located up two flights. But if you don’t mind that, it’s a solid choice for a clean and budget-friendly stay in the city.
- 1/5
Where do I even begin ? The good old saying you get what you pay for really applies to this property. I came here for the San Francisco marathon, and i’d rather spend $ on souvenirs, merchandise, food than to spend it on a hotel boy was I ever wrong. Its’s located downtown SF don’t let that fool you though the area where it’s at is terrible, there’s homeless people & druggies in front of the property. I arrived to the hotel for a late check in at midnight (I couldn't leave from la any earlier because of school), oddly enough the hotel requires a ring to enter the facility. Literally was standing outside for 10 minutes next to homeless people & druggies, thankfully nothing happened but I was freaking out because I had luggage and my belongings with me. Inside it’s safe the room where I stayed was decent, I stayed in a king bed with a private shower, the bed was extremely uncomfortable and the shower was tiny. Outside was noisy with people yelling (my guess is the druggies & homeless people) , and sirens so I could hardly sleep. After a day I decided to switch hotels.. nothing against the hotel it was mainly the area it was in and how unsafe I personally felt. If you’re not worried about the environment around the hotel then go for it, otherwise I wouldn't risk staying there.

Best thing about this place is that it was located above an awesome dive bar. The Rumpus Room.
- 1/5
This place should be advertised as a hostel not as a hotel.
- 5/5
Great amenities for a downtown hotel
- 3/5
1 star for no heat/cooling in room and noisy homeless people day and night on the street below. Combined score: 3 stars.
- 4/5
Great for the money. Very convenient to attractions and public transportation. Rooms, and shared bathroom/shower areas were very clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. Area can be a bit seedy late at night, but stay aware of your surroundings, mind your own business and you’ll be fine. Hotel itself is secure. I’d definitely stay here again.
- 1/5
Unable to check in. Stood on the street for 30 minutes trying to ring in from about 8:45-9:15pm. Called and texted the phone number. Eventually made a reservation at another hotel.
- 4/5
Cons: the bed was so uncomfortable. I have stayed in shelters with better beds in my lifetime. I woke up super sore today. Also it was very cold. They said the radiator would kick on at a certain time but i never felt it. They provided me with a space heater that kept my room warm but the shared bathroom and shower area was still chilly. The room was in the condition you’d expect for $57 a night— clearly worn in but definitely clean. Overall I would be very likely to stay again if they replaced the mattresses.
- 4/5
The neighborhood was shoddy, but the hotel was secure and clean.
- 1/5
The elevator didn't work going down, and the immediate area in front & around "hotel" resembled a 3rd-world country (not touristy San Francisco)
- 4/5
Winsor is a hostel and not a hotel. If you want full amenities go to a hotel.
- 4/5
Clean and cheap. Better than hotels at the same price. The ceiling fan was making noise, and have to be turned off when I was going to sleep, but it was not a big problem.
- 5/5
I didn’t get his name but the guy at the reception desk was very nice and attentive. The room I got 310 was more than what I expected. Looks like it was renovate recently. Property is very central to everything in SOMA. There is a chicken place on the corner (chicken Gaia, I think) that sells great food. Overall very happy with my stay here.
- 5/5
This property is close to the bus stops and train. The staff is cooperative and welcoming.
- 4/5
Not an ideal neighborhood for families with young kids as it is quite dirty, noisy, and an area with a prominent homeless population. However, if you are of the mind to understand that there is no actual threat as long as you are not wandering the streets alone at 3am then this is a good deal for a stay if you are in a situation where you are visiting SF to be out most of the day seeing the sights and just need a place to sleep. I would stay here again.
- 5/5
Good Stay.
- 3/5
The location and the cost of this hotel were great! Getting in and out was hard however. The hotel can't control that people live on the street outside the door of the hotel, but sometimes I had to wait to get in as people were urinating or spending lots of time at the door to get into the hotel. The person at check in was nice and organized. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean, but the area was very loud outside at 2-3am and I had trouble sleeping. Appreciate the value of this place, but won't be staying again
- 5/5
Great place to stay at
- 5/5
Lovely little building that is well-kept, tidy and quiet. The streets outside are busy, lots of folks around all times of day. Inside, you feel very safe and the rooms are quiet. Rooms look nicely and newly renovated. All common areas are kept very clean and well-maintained. Absolutely no complaints. The description provided by the owners is accurate. I like supporting a family owned business! Good experience for needing a safe and reliable place to stay in the centre of the city.

The place was well located, but the neighborhood was not that good during the night. The hotel has the necessary things to stay in. You can notice that it is old, but is well maintained.

Clean and convenient. Great for our one night stay in the city. Walking distance to the BART, and other attractions.

The front desk staff were very nice to me! I knew before hand that the bathrooms would be down the hall but it was still inconvenient of course, the neighbors were respectful and the nightlife was very fun to watch out the window! Everything was neat and clean for us when we got there and i didn’t find anything gross or weird! it was overall a very good choice for the location! access to all of the transgender district from one spot! i loved it!

For the price it was worth it. Too bad San Francisco has increased its homeless population. Rooms are small but enough.

I wish they would just stop calling this place a hotel. Before you book that place, know what you’re getting yourself into. With just a little imagination and will, they can improve a lot.

Notice that the bathroom and showed in this hotel are shared. There are 2 showers and 1 bathroom per floor.

I also liked the location of this place because it is really close to the public transport and the famous San Francisco’s cable car. Yeah this location is sprawled with transients but the hotel also prioritizes the safety as you need enter the hotel with an access card. If you walk street and don’t mind them, the whole situation is nothing.

The staff was very helpful. I would stay there again given that it is inexpensive for SF. The area is a little rough but central for my needs

Very basic room but overall is good. It is quite noisy at night - some renovation going on but was not soundproof. Earplug is recommended. There was homeless on the street, but they are harmless.

Great hotel, scary location.

Several days after staying there, I started breaking out with sets of three bug bites. Looks like it could be bed bugs. I called the hotel, and they promised to look into it.

Both sides of the bed , also a queen sized bed would f Fit in room

The room itself wasn't too bad other than the bed. It was the loudest squeaking bed ever. Directly outside the hotel was what really gives this place a bad image. Crack heads and homeless people line the streets

When we checked in we found a very large cockroach in the room and also rat droppings on the floor. We complained to management and left, but they charged us for the night. And BTW -Expedia is NO help whatsoever. Your team has told me there is nothing they can do - that I will be charged for a rat and cockroach infested room the Icould not stay in.
