Reviews
The hotel has a significant issue with homeless people in the surrounding area, making guests feel unsafe. The rooms are generally clean and comfortable, but there are frequent complaints about the lack of air conditioning and heating, as well as noise from both inside and outside the hotel.

The room had been renovated was a bit dated as an older property but clean enough. Price was good and it served its purpose for our stay. Staff were helpful. Close to main street and some lovely areas. Location was a wee bit uncomfortable, streets a bit dirty if you know what I mean but still ok. Again room a bit dated but you get what you pay for, only cake soap supplied. No working smoke detector in our room. Sheets old and a bit stained but clean. Room was clean but not well looked after by previous occupants.

This place seems scary if your not used to being in the city and who knows, maybe it is. I'm not of that life. My brother and I had no issues the few days we were there though. It a very conveniently placed motel being close to a lot. The place was definitely aged and could use some upgrades, but seemed very clean. The beds were amazingly soft and comfortable for a motel. Probably the best part.

There were roaches in the room, smelled like cigarettes, dirty towels, dirty /stained blankets, dirty/ stained pillows. The pictures on Expedia don’t reflect how the motel actually looks.

Rough neighborhood i would say. Should have done my research. You get what you paid for. Its a run down property. AC doesn't work properly.

It’s was a cool room because it was a corner room. We couldn’t check-in at 3. We checked in 2 hours later because cleaning didn’t show up. It was dirty and hot and smelled like pot everywhere.

Not ideal given the area but amenities for our stay were limited. Staff was not very warm or attentive. Beds were comfortable and clean. Our toilet was not functioning properly and our shower water was initially brown when we tried having showers. Not a great property unless you need an immediate place to stay.

Nothing but zombies and gangs of men doing drugs near the entrance of the locked hotel door at 7:45 at night. No hotel staff to open the door. We rang the door bell and called the hotel for over 10 minutes and no one answered. Finally, a construction worker opened the door, followed a few minutes later by the hotel staff person. See complaint to Expedia for more into.

The staff was not accommodating at all; 2 of them weren’t friendly and felt like they were annoyed when you asked them something. The noise from the street was really loud even if the windows were closed. There was no airconditioning, only a heater. The lighting was really horrible. Plus the location is really sketchy. And the cherry on top? The fire alarm went off at 3am and we all had to vacate the building… only for it to be a false alarm. Some pros: Big screen TV (but the remote didn’t have batteries that I had to ask reception), and a great and really cheap Banh Mi place right beside it.
- 1.5/5
The TV volume didn't work there was no toilet paper the walls had holes they put me in a room where there's a machine or some bathroom outside and makes a lot of noise I try to move but then let me because there was no more rooms available which is BS this is the second time they are booked somewhere with you guys and I've gotten bad service can you please make this right and reimburse me with all my money not just $1.40 you guys reimburse me last time thank you.

The room was a lot smaller than it appears in the picture. As soon as you walk in the door, the bed is right there. No air conditioning, they had the ceiling fan on and all the windows open for a breeze. The elevator was old and stopped working after the hotel fire, which resulted in everyone having to walk down 6 flights of stairs in dog poop that was left by a traveler with a dog. Which we found out the property had about 6 travelers staying with dogs. The dog poop was still on the stairs the next morning after the hotel fire, the maids didn't want to clean it up. The rooms were not cleaned between the days staying. They did not provide enough towels and did not understand when we requested more. They do not have on site parking, you have to park down the street around the corner due to the street sweeper coming between 6 and 8am. This Motel 6 is more for people who are living on the property like a run down apartment.

Bad horrible do not get a room
- 1/5
If you want to get a taste of the slums then this is where you should stay. The carpets are dirty, the elevator is dirty with graffiti, one of the windows in our room would not stay open on its own so we had to prop it open with the ice bucket, the towel rods were missing from the wall in the bathroom, the bathtub in the room was peeling and old, there were many people who looked like drug addicts who seemed to live there.

It was uncomfortably cold in the room. So I had to stay under a blanket all night but I was offered a heater for the room which turned out to be the last one but I politely declined on that as it was only going to be for one night and that somebody else might need it more than I do.

Motel 6 is nice but the surrounding area isn't but this is my place of birth which is right here in the heart of the city. Now apart from the barking dogs that were barking all night and the TVs not working in some of the rooms on the 3rd floor it was quite alright and I will keep coming back to re-enjoy myself when I am in the Tenderloin area.

Shower didn’t work, heater didn’t work. The ice machine was on bottom floor. They did have coffee, but they could have like donuts, bagels etc. they could have decaf coffee as well as regular coffee. The elevator was something else. Old elevator with the gate you had to pull open. Will never stay at that hotel again in SF.

The motel is in the heart of the Tenderloin district. Staff was friendly and attentive. The walls were thin, the room smelled like bleach, and I saw one small cockroach during my stay. I felt like this was a solid step up from a hostel or some of the other, more questionable shelter options in the area. I slept well on the bed, the pillows were good, and the water was hot. It was very affordable, I felt safe in the building, and despite the room not having a desk chair initially, the staff was able to have one delivered within 30 minutes of me asking about one. A solid stay overall.

The faucet in the bathtub is leaky. There was hair from the previous occupant in the tub. There is no way to control the heat or the AC in the room and it was cold at night. The bed linen was stained from previous use. The wifi is not reliable and regularly loses connection to the internet for several minutes at at time. all and all, I've stayed at many Motel 6's over the years. I like the budget pricing and accept the modest accomodations but this particular motel 6 is well below even their standard.

The stay was a very humbling experience. I tried to learn about where not to stay in SF and thought this was near the civic center and not the Tenderloin, but I was wrong. Even though there is thousands of homeless on the streets, it’s not the reason for 2 stars. When we arrived it looked like a abandoned building, then we found the entrance, we had no TV for the first night because they moved out s to another room but that room had no heat or air and a big hole in the wall covered by a trash bag, so we returned to room with broken tv. Later we discovered the shower didn’t work either. The room was clean but fire alarms were covered by plastic bags. Lucky we did get to venture and see San Francisco away from the tenderloin. I did see a sign that said Himanity had a good run. It made me look at myself and know that if I can help at least one person maybe we can bring humanity back!!

The surrounding blocks are rough but the property is fine if you just need a cheap place to stay. Rooms are clean. No complaints other than there's no place to sit except the bed. Like no chairs or even a stool. Bus stop right in front of the hotel. Just do your research if venturing out on foot and stay aware of your surroundings. Probably want to steer clear of the blocks directly east of the hotel day or night. Really nice empanada place one block west (Cafe Buenos Aires). If you are looking more to experience the neighborhood then probably take a star off from this review.

The pictures are exaggerated. Must be CGI or AI. The front entrance is boarded up. The Deli/bar is a stack of dusty chairs and closed off. Our room had 2 light bulbs out, the remote control and the phone to let them know downstairs wasn't working. Our heater didn't work. We had to use a plug in floor heater. Our sheets had spots as if they were't changed. I was told by the front desk clerk, I should have notified him of my dirty sheets prior to 8pm, not at 4p at check-in because the cleaning staff has gone home already. (....! Who in the Hello Kitty does that?!) We were able to change the sheets ourselves and go to the Walgreen's around the corner and buy Lysol and sanitizer everything. Because at this point, we lost all trust in this Motel 6. They did change our room the next day that was better, BUT we will never stay here again.

The communal hallway and lift is absolutely filthy and has not been cleaned for some time. Whilst the rooms were clean, the toilet did not flush in either room I booked. The single glazing is entirley inappropriate for the area, you will be kept awake all night by sirens, cars, shouting. I do not know how it would be possible to sleep here. The area is my biggest issue. It is unsanitary and unsafe. There was human feaces on the pavement and there is a large homeless population who openly use drugs day and night. If you are not familiar with San Fransisco, dont stay in this area, it really is as bad as you can imagine. There should absolutely be some sort of warning when booking, as two women travelling alone we felt exteremely unsafe. The one redeeming feature was the immediate refund we were offered when we had to book another hotel. Although, we feel that we should also be refunded for the night we had to stay there, and this not been forthcoming. I say had, as staying at this motel 6 any longer would have ruined our trip.

The new Motel 6 used to be called The Regency Inn from back in the day but then they dropped the name and renamed it to Motel 6 many years later which is nice. It has its amenities that it offers such as free toiletries, heater, ceiling fan, hair dryer although couldn't find any in my room and the ironing board either but they could send it up if you call and ask. No complimentary breakfast at this time but they do have many stores and eateries in the area so do not hesitate to step out there to explore and check out! Just don't step out after dark but otherwise great stay so far despite of the noises that are coming from both outside and nextdoor as the couple has a German shepherd with them.

Tv was broken and staff were unhelpful and neglectful of the situation. Never received room service throughout my entire stay and had to go up to the front desk to ask for more towels and toilet paper. There were cockroaches on the floor. The floors and walls were very thin and could not sleep well due to loud noises from the streets and through the hallways and above my room. Overall felt unsafe and could not rest well due to location and negligence of this building.

The only slight negatives were we had to ask for room service, the bath was needing replacing, the room definitely needs a chair at the desk and the website stated there was coffee making facilities in the room but there were none. The area has a lot of homeless but they keep themselves to themselves. There are also quite a few nice eateries especially La Lafayette on Larkin Street for the best breakfast. Overall I would recommend staying here for a clean comfortable reasonably priced visit

The property was ok for the area, basice room, comfortable bed, pleasant staff. The area was terrible, lots of homeless and drugs being used and sold on the street. Streets covered in feces, both animal and human. Will definitely not visit again

Very bad neighborhood. People were smoking fentanyl on the streets and you had to dodge piles of poop. Water was pouring down in the bathroom from the room above us. With all the water leakage I’m worried about the structural integrity of the building.

The elevator is old and difficult to manage. There were bags of trash in the hallway. I was woken at 6 am to dogs barking in a nearby room that did not stop for 5 (!) hours. There was construction with power tools going on in a room down the hall. The room smelled like bad cleaner (think thrift store delouser).

It was very dirty inside our room, very dusty from the construction outside. The TV remotes did not work, even though the one person that was running in the hotel that night gave me directions how to fix it. It still didn’t work. This place looked like it was under construction or something. It just felt dirty, there were several homeless people in the sidewalks in front of the hotel or I should say to the side of the hotel, the area for a disabled person to try to gain entry to the facility, was locked up with a metal fence and both my husband and I have difficulty going stairways, but that didn’t seem to be an issue for them. In our bathroom, there was some kind of a leak prior to us staying in it because when you stood on the tiles in the room, water gust out from underneath them. I made mention to the gentleman at the front counter, and he seemed to not know what I was talking about But at the very end of our conversation, he said he could move us if we wanted to. It’s not that we wanted to how can somebody stay in a room? That’s like that it was disgusting. Unfortunately, because I missed the deadline of canceling something. I’ve not been refunded the money for not saying that Hotel. So I give it zero props for anything, I will give Dave the day Guy point for allowing us to store our luggage prior to checking in so that we could go do our thing that we had to do before we could check in. Not suggesting it

Area of city is awful, couldn’t go out at night, upon arrival, staff member checking us in, burped in my face, was rude, first night in room with phone line cut, no smoke detector, tried to have shower, faucet fell off in my hand, couldn’t turn water off, second room, no wifi, went to get ready for day next morning, had a tour booked, no water, water was off until 1500, think they are still renovating, drills, grinding started early am, all night long upstairs banging, dragging furniture. Do not stay here, staff unhelpful, staff that didn’t move us argued we were not in room we were moved to, but still in original room, I travelled extensively and have never experienced such a awful hotel stay.

052125 I just stayed here the other night and find it to be a decent place to get some rest for few days if you want to escape the streets for awhile. The rooms are small apartments like most of us would rent during the 2000's for say school at the local collages nearby convertred into hotel rooms. I was able to get a decent rest enjoy a nice big clean bed to sleep in and was not hassled thus far in renting a room like at the rodeway inn by van ness which broke my contract (Breach of Contract) with them to rent a room with them for a few days after about my fourth contract... blameing it on the cleaning lady didnt want to service the room if i rented again. Why? I still do not know. I am not a messy person (see facebook videos and i am a choice privledges : diamond member) and this also occured at the super 8 while trying to rent a room close to taylor and ofarrell. Similar issue same breach of contract. So this is going on around here at this time. I was able to rent this room and had an enjoyable stay and will most likely return again as long as they fufill their contracts. It is a good location close to the sf library, farmers market, and even sigon sandwich which is one of the best cheapest sandwiches around town.

clean hotel, you get what you paid for. Super convenient to many food places and shops. Alot of homeless but if you mind your business they don't bother you. I will stay at this hotel again.

This area did not feel safe at all.
- 3/5
The room renovation at this property is nice. New paint and furnishings are throughout, along with ceiling fans. No chair with the desk, though. However, that's all the positive things. The rooms felt damp, and significant amounts of black mold were visible above the window frames. The surrounding neighborhood had drug sales and activity on every block. A portable public bathroom powered by a gas generator ran throughout the night and was unavoidable in the room 6 floors up. The Uber driver even asked me why I stayed in such an unsafe area and to check my shoes for needles.
- 5/5
It was motel 6 pricing but the bed pillows and restroom felt nothing like other motel 6 and was the comfiest/modern touch to it!
- 2/5
My room was constantly hot or cold. The hot water on both the sink and shower is boiling hot so be careful. The ceiling fan was nice and the folks at the front desk were very helpful. No breakfast options or room service. Not even coffee or tea.
- 5/5

Smelly inside and outside the hotel facilities.
- 5/5
The hotel lacks any coffee service or continental breakfast. No plugs near the bed.

No any shampoo the soaps was dry.these are dry. Supplies in hotels are the most important and guests cannot take something like that on our package. The room was very hot and sometimes very cold.elevator is very dangerous because the second door not be able to control it to keep open and going out from elevator. Looks like this hotel no any quality so expensive no find any park space and I paid one night public parking 55$ and seems it needs review and make all structures again Thanks

- 2/5
There is almost no price that would justify staying at this hotel. It is noisy, dirty, my room had been smoked in, the sheets weren’t clean, and at nighttime you have to watch out for homeless people everywhere.
- 1/5
2 stars is generous. No heat. Nice TV on wall, was not connected. No desk help. No toiletries. Frightening neighborhood (I’ve felt safer in the slums of Rio).
- 2/5
No parking and I get a ticket for that
- 1/5
The area is also soo scary and soo many homeless people and their staff members were letting them in to use the restroom!!! I felt soo scared and unsafe we had to immediately leave and figure out other accommodation’s . This was the worst experience ive ever had anywhere
- 2/5
The amenities that were listed were not available when I arrived at the hotel. I paid for something that i did not receive.
- 3/5
Property recently renovated. Rooms a bit small but nice, no AC however. Area outside is scary however many areas in San Francisco are scary with the homeless problem. Staff nice. Uber in/uber out and you will be fine
- 2/5
Internet is very bad. Didn't expect the elevator is old style. You can hear the noise outside.
- 5/5
Staff was excellent, the property was historic and well cleaned. We felt the location was a little noisy, but overall convenient! Would stay again if I returned to the city.
- 1/5
Place smells terrible Toilet in room did not work and we were told there was no one to fix it.
- 4/5
Beds were comfy and clean. Floor seemed a bit gritty. Hair in the shower that wasn’t ours. Baseboards need dusting.
- 1/5
The property is located in an area of San Francisco with the highest rating of violent crime. There is no onsite parking available, so walking to and from the hotel and paid parking is unsafe. The streets are lined with homeless and smell of strongly of urine. The loud sound of people on the streets and from other hotel rooms can be heard all through the night. Complimentary breakfast is not included as stated, coffee maker in lobby was broken. Overall very uneasy feeling during entire stay.
- 4/5
The room itself was fine. I should’ve done more research to see what the neighborhood was like. No on-site parking..
- 4/5
This is an honest review. I was curious about the hotel b/c the pictures of rooms honestly looked good, but I also read some of the reviews. Decided to book it anyhow. 1st comment mirrors others made: this is a suspicious area for those not familiar with The Tenderloin (I was). Sadly, some blocks that lead to the hotel are busy with homeless and transient types. Not horrible, just unsightly at times. It can get a little noisy (depending on where you're facing) if you're a light sleeper, but not horrible. That said, room was great, large, bright, clean, linoleum *wood* flooring, clean shower. My only real complaint was no fridge, so not storing food (fruits, yogurt, drinks) was a bummer since leaving for food was tiresome (I don't do food deliveries). The desk wasn't amazing, but was fine. Would I recommend it? It depends on your tolerance for *funny* areas. I would not take kids with me. Would I stay there again? Yes! Affordable and I was there 1 week. The nice front desk lady let me pick my room when I checked in. I was honestly pleasantly surprised. I walked everywhere but did take the bus twice which dropped me off IN FRONT of the hotel. Summary: is it a clean hotel? Yes. Is it adjacent to some unsightly blocks? Yes. But TBH, this is a SF issue (a very sad one). Hope this helped!
- 1/5
The area was not safe at all’s the streets are full of homeless people and it smells awful. We could not find parking and people warned us that if we parked on the street, our car would be broken into. We cancelled the reservation upon arrival because of how bad the conditions were in the area. We still had to pay for the night according to the agreement that was made on Expedia. Don’t book here unless it is last resort. We found a hotel in a much nicer area.
- 4/5
cool
- 3/5
My room was beautiful and bright. Loved the staff, decor and the old San Francisco vibe. My one problem was the furnace. I had a hard time turning it off because it’s an old design. I suffered from pretty bad allergies, stuffiness, sneezing and developed a rash from having it on. Once I finally got it to turn off with the help of the front desk, my symptoms slowly got better.
- 5/5
The rooms were large and very clean. Shower water was only tepid at best. One has to walk a few blocks or so to find a nice restaurant. Area could be a bit scary at first. Nice staff. I plan to stay there again.
- 2/5
Positives: Clean inside, friendly staff, lobby doors are only accessible by guests, beds are comfy, price is right, close to Civic Center (reason I chose HTL). Negatives: Homeless everywhere, crack smoking right in front of you on sidewalks, poop literally smeared on all around, room wasnt fully cleaned (bits of debris on floor from damaged door), thin walls (heard guy next to me snoring, they do laundry at night and I heard it all night (I couldn't sleep until 3am), no smoking but you can smell it, no on site parking (just the way it is in SF I guess but I ended paying $40 to park a sketchy lot blocks away. I am more rugged then most so I was a little paranoid but for many it would not have felt safe... checking in late pass sunset). There are just too many negatives that I cant overlook but the biggest is sound sleep which I couldn't get any of! Only need a place to sleep so I could handle some business the next morning!
- 1/5
No ventilation in bathroom and there was no housekeeping. Had to ask for fresh towels multiple times. I don’t know if understaffed but overall difficult to get help. Location has good restaurants nearby, but is incredibly noisy at night due to large homeless population nearby.
- 2/5
My first room the was to activate after 9pm my second room no phone or clock. Front Dest Attended ask why do I need a phone in my room. To call them obsessively
- 3/5
Area around hotel is disgusting, you can see poop, pee every where. For the room, there’s no air conditioner.
- 3/5
Clean & spacious room, absolutely loved the bed, so comfy and warm. Beautiful bathroom, just wished they would've refill bathroom accessories. Enjoyed the smart TV. Sadly, there is absolutely no safe parking near the hotel unless you want to pay about $45 and drive 5mins to a lot and then walk about 4 blocks back to the hotel through some very sketchy and dangerous streets; overwhelmed with homeless people. Way too loud, walls & windows are paper thin, I wasn't able to sleep from all the noise. I ended up parking infront of the hotel on the side of the road but I was lucky to find a spot and just payed the meter but still got a parking ticket since it only let's you pay a certain amount of time. The hotel is a bit hard to find but it is literally on the corner. It was a decent night charge for being in SF and the lovely room but I wouldn't stay again.
- 3/5
nice staff, clean room. But any breakfast or ice or anything extra you can forget about. Also I didn't personally mind but the neighbourhood because it's right downtown but it is very rough. Like crackhead rough. lots of yelling all night.
- 5/5
The property was very nice and clean.
- 4/5
The property was nice. They staff were amazing. I can tell theres more to be done but overall good experience. This is pleasing and just needs a little more work but will definitely become a amazing place to stay. I was very comfortable ther for sure. If i go back to SF i would definitely stay there again.
- 2/5
The parking structures charged over $40 a day, this was not noted anywhere on the hotels site. People in the hotel causing noise until 3:00 am. There was a lot of homelss people everywhere. As we walked to the hotel, a man was pooping on thrle street. We did not feel safe at all. The hotel rooms was ean but small.
- 4/5
An older renovated building, for the price was nice an convenient. The area has a lot of homelessness but is not unsafe, and central for getting around. During our stay the coffee machine, and elevator were out of service which was unfortunate and a bit frustrating.
- 3/5
The rooms are fine, but the walls are very thin and they don’t clean the rooms during your stay. The hotel is in the Tenderloin so it’s not a safe area, if you choose to still stay here you can go a couple of blocks down to the civic center where you can get the bus or other transportation. It’s cheap so it makes sense for the area to not be good and the hotel to be old, but I would not recommend it.
- 4/5
The facility had a table in the lobby for eating. Nice coffee machine.
- 5/5
This was perfect place to stay. Clean and friendly staff. We really enjoyed “Chambers” restaurant across the street. It’s old building so small elevator and crooked stairs. I’d totally stay there again. Beds were very comfy. We parked at cova hotel valet parking which is around the corner. It was awesome.
- 5/5
Places when on business because I’m busy 12 hours a day and just need a place to sleep This is an old, refurbished in the Tenderloin, a notoriously high crime area of SF with large homeless community. People need to know that going in. Such places rise and fall on cleanliness and the attitude and responsiveness of staff. This place gave me a clean room, spotless bathroom, good service and secure front door. Excellent value for the money
- 4/5
A public shower station has been placed across the street. So theres noise and homeless people around at all hours.
- 4/5
On the whole the property was beautifully renovated and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I did have problems keeping my room warm with the one small steam radiator. The neighborhood is not the best but once you get 4 or 5 blocks away in any direction things become oh so much nicer.
- 5/5
Staff was so friendly and helpful. My only concern was the location. Too many drug addicted/ homeless that make you feel unsafe when you leave the property
- 3/5
Hotel is located in an area of town where there is a higher population of homelessness and drug use. The main door to then hotel is locked 24/7 so it does feel safe once you are inside the hotel. However, you can absolutely hear what’s going on in the streets at night. Bedroom is nicely renovated. Bathroom cleanliness can be improved.
- 4/5
Anything I needed was provided by the staff upon request. The room itself was nice and had all I needed. However, the property was advertised as 'breakfast included' which it was not. Also "daily housekeeping' really was cleaning upon request. Not bad value but I was expecting more based on the details when booking.
- 3/5
Maid walked in on me in the bathroom. Didn’t knock.
- 2/5
The area is horrible! We couldn’t even walk around without feeling safe. We found 2 live roaches in our room & the staff had no bug spray or anything. No phone, air or heater in the room. The room also has no insulation so we were able to hear everything in the hallway. The staff were welcoming but that’s about it.
- 1/5
Would not recommend at any price.
- 5/5
Everything was amazing except when you walk outside the block a little sketchy ..
- 1/5
The staff was very accomodating when we had to move rooms due to cockroaches. And then when the new room also had roaches, the didn't fight us on getting our money back. The first room had exposed wires, sticky floors, dirty utensils on the floor, and of course, roaches. The beds were actually pretty comfy though. We also had a local tell us that this place is more of a shelter than a hotel, and that the city gives the unhoused population $70 vouchers to stay there. I wasn't able to confirm, but would have been good to know.
- 5/5
Great stay. We will be back!
- 3/5
Love the hotel and the staff, however, not in a good area of San Francisco. We did not feel safe after leaving the hotel. Drug deals on street and people doing drugs right next to hotel in daylight. Human feces on street and smash and grab of rental car while we were at dinner a few blocks down in the financial district.
- 2/5
alot of people on the streets consuming drugs, infront of the hotel
- 3/5
Good hotel! It felt safe once inside and the staff were friendly and helpful. The area around is definitely a bit sketchy. I wouldn't recommend for solo female travelers, and be careful in the area. The location can make the hotel feel a bit uncomfortable at times.
- 5/5
Nice new renovated hotel everything was clean and stuff was perfect
