Reviews
Guests generally appreciate the hotel's historic charm, cleanliness, and friendly service, but some find the neighborhood noisy and unsafe. The hotel's central location in San Francisco is a significant pro, with many attractions and public transportation within walking distance. However, the lack of on-site parking and the high cost of nearby parking are frequent complaints. The hotel's affordability is often praised, but some guests feel the quality of accommodations does not match the price.
- Central location in San Francisco
- Friendly and helpful service
- Noisy and unsafe neighborhood

The hotel itself was historic and well kept on the outside. It there was a little hidden to find on the street and there were a decent amount of people who passed on on the street. So beware that when trying to check in if you don't have someone to help with parking, the rooms were were solo stocked and well kept dust was in the bathroom that did grow concerns but overall everything was fine. The elevator is very cool and the staircase is narrow so be forewarned as it says in the description

The towels could be updated, but there were plenty in the room. I was not there a lot, so the price worked well for me. This location is great for travelers on a budget. The neighborhood was fine. There is a wonderful market two doors down where you can get all sort of food and supplies and the rooms have a fridge and microwave. No breakfast, but they have coffee in the room and two cafes within the block. Trader Joe’s is right up the street. Aces Nar is a NY bar three doors down. Lively and clean.

Says the have valet parking but that wasn't true. On e all 13 of us arrived in 2 vehicles we were told they couldn't accommodate us. Had to find other parking we ended up parking 4 blocks away and walking. But the property is clean I felt safe.

Had a short one night stay, and it's honestly very practical. It might not look much on outside and the corridors are quite tight, but the room itself is very spacious and clean

Good location Very tiny rooms, overpriced, street full of homeless and drug addicts. Beware - although they state they have parking, in reality they will refer you to a nearby public parking lot after booking, where you will pay at least $50 per day.

Staff is nice but could do better with their service. They could smile a little. No air conditioning SF does not need it. Elevator was broken when i got there. If you have any mobility problem this place is not for you, sorry. I thought there was continental breakfast. I did not see any or maybe I was late.

Location, price and the helpful front office person. Given that this is my first time in SF, my drive from SF airport to this facility got me concerned. Once I reached the location, I figured out that this place is quite away from all the troublesome locations. And it was quite safe and peaceful.

Nice property. Room did its job as we stayed for 6 nights. On our last night, we were startled by crumpling noises that we thought were coming from outside our window. We quickly realized it was coming from our small trash bin near our bed. We caught two mice digging through. We ran to the front desk for another room to stay in. It was 1am

The building is very old and historical, which is always a fun experience. My room was cool, quiet, and comfortable, with a very cozy bed. The only thing was a strong cleaning smell when I first entered the room, which as a bit overwhelming until I got used to it.

The manual elevator and old style architecture is something I can talk about with others. It was in a safer area although near the Tenderloin. There’s a few breakfast spots and Vietnamese food nearby. The wifi was somewhat weak (maybe go off after 11pm?) and the light would turn on in the middle of the night and hard to turn off. My room had a bunk bed so 3 guests could stay but 2 people felt crowded.

This is an excellent value hotel. It’s not particularly impressive as you approach or mount the stairs to the reception but the room itself was fine. Nice bay window and bright and clean.
- 4/5
This was an okay stay but for older clients like me the stairs and elevator are challenging.
- 2.5/5
Location was good The European style lift required manual labour, I didn’t mind it as much Not a single hint of housekeeping- not that I’m expecting tiny chocolates in my pillowcase, but certainly expected the bed to be made, or clean change of towels…
- 5/5
For the price, you can't beat this hotel. While no AC, you do have a fan over the bed that provides great air circulation. Great location. We walked to everything within 1 to 1.5 miles. Clean room. Would stay again!!

Ancient elevator There was tissue under the table when we entered. Constant noise from pipes The room heater was not on and the front desk didn't mention anything about how to turn it on. We figured out how to turn it on ourselves. Toilet water tank didn't always refill

The Mathila Hotel is awesome! The staff is great! The area is safe. Everything you need is close by and the produce store, next door, is incredible. I highly recommend Mathila Hotel to anyone who wants to stay in downtown SF that is affordable and safe. We loved our stay here!! There is nothing not to like. It's an affordable hotel in a safe area and all amenities and transportation are very close.

Lovely clean room, wooden floors. Friendly front desk. Large wardrobe hanging space and all the facilities you want (work desk, tv, coffee machine, iron, hairdryer, microwave, fridge, overhead fan, en suite bathroom). My room was on the top floor and faced the street. It was a little noisy in the evening, but quiet later for sleeping. Great corner shop nearby, plus fantastic kebab place and sushi restaurant.

There is a lot of construction, roadwork, and people smoking in and around the buildings. The noise level is pretty high, but for all of the circumstances within the control of the hotel, I think they do a good job. Staff is always friendly as usual.

The room was damp, musty smelling, and the floor under the bed caked with mold. No screens on the windows. People hanging out on the stairs at the entrance smoking marijuana every afternoon. Hallway on floor three in the back smelled like pot smoke. Beds uncomfortable, only sheets and thin comforter. Rooms aren’t updated. Dark environment.

There is no onsite parking. Had to use a parking garage about 1 1/2 blocks away. Elevator is old style, which was quaint, but the doors have to be held open while pulling back the entry gate and trying to get you baggage in is difficult. No ice machine on the property. The staff were friendly.

The room we got instead (306) was MUCH better, almost like it was a different hotel entirely. Locks worked, fridge had a freezer section, shower drained and the room was just overall in better shape. The problem with any city hotel is all the noise in the area - in this case a dog that started yapping at 5am and never stopped until we checked out. Was cheap, and we got what we paid for. Wouldn’t stay again.

I did not eat at the local restaurants. The bed was comfortable, and the pillows were very soft. I was concerned about bedbugs, but the mattress is completely wrapped in a plastic wrapper. Problem solved. There was a lot of street noise based on road construction, loud music, and people yelling. Fortunately, I slept through most of it.

I would have rate this higher; HOWEVER, I felt dirty after sleeping here as I found a condom on the floor. I came in to check in shower (took about 30 min) so I did not fully inspect the room. I left and came back very late night and showered and went to bed. In the morning as I was cleaning up before checking out I found the condom right under the bed. I felt so nasty knowing they did not properly cleaned the room. Never will stay here again.

Stay was fine, room was clean but small. I stayed because I was attending a show. I left a signed tour poster in the room I stayed in and noticed when I was home (only 2 hours away) I called back and the man at the front desk was rude and did not care when he told me they threw it away. You’re a hotel, you should have a lost and found and keep items for a certain amount of time, especially if the guest calls the same day they checked out to tell you they left something. I’m VERY ANGRY.

What Is not available is wider hallways, a wider staircase, newer windows, and a not-scary-to-use elevator. There is a lot of construction going on outside. However, these things are all outside the ability of management to change.

Expedia gives ratings on these properties that are misleading. This property was clean and quite but it was missing several normal features. It was given a high rating that was very misleading. The ratings should be broken into 1-4 stars for type of hotel and then 0-100 within that category. this hotel did not have heat or air and that was not disclosed. It was not ADA compliant as had steps at entry. No ice machine. Owner/manager was very nice and very helpful with everything it is just the Expedia rating system that is flawed.

It was nice having a mini frig and microwave and the room was quiet. Bed was comfortable. The only chair in the room was a desk chair. No overhead light and no light or table at bedside. I ended up leaving the bathroom light on all night to at least see when I got up. Bathroom door dragged on the floor and was hard to close. Heat was radiators that only started heating after I had gone to sleep. I got what I paid for and it was decent if you just need a place to sleep.

It was good, its an older or historic? Property I was fine with the place staff was great. A nice new bathroom, unfortunately, the whole neighborhood I noticed has a plumbing problem not horrible but the sewer smell comes up, especially in the morning. But for the price well you can't have it all. I was a little cold in the am but a hot shower gave me hope.

The property is very unique in style. My room was super clean. I did not have any expectations because of the area but was impressed with cleanliness. I would stay here again. There is a store conveniently located just outside the property and that really helped with dining. Carpets can use some upgrade.

Very old hotel, no ac, which I now know is common for San Fran. Room was small, but did the job for a solo traveler. Mini fridge and microwave worked well.

The area didnt seem very sketchy, downtown SF itself is a little eh and you have to keep an eye out but I had no issues. This place does not offer parking but there’s several garages nearby, we committed to using public transportation and it was an experience for sure! I’m coming back the next time I have a trip planned out for the city.

The room itself was clean, just older. Ceiling had capped electrical wires hanging from the ceiling. The windows had an abundance of mold on them which was worrisome as there was no air-conditioning so the only air was coming through the windows. The bed was clean but very firm. The bathroom was the tough part. There was an abundance of mold on the walls but mostly hidden behind the toilet. The oddest part was having a random maintenance man working on our room in the middle of the day with no warning. He insisted on being there even after staff requested he leave. We spent almost $1200 for two nights to stay in this place and I would have expected better. The public spaces are very old and grimy. The staff was nice.

Got checked in very quickly by friendly staff. Came in to a clean room with a TV (no Netflix or anything but has cable). Nice shower and bathroom with windows you can open for fresh air. You do get what you pay for, however I think this provides more value than what it costs. Only downside is the bay can be a little humid and without AC the room can get a little stuffy. Recommend to anyone traveling on a budget!

I'm glad I chose this hotel. It was convenient for the purpose of my travel. The hotel rate is reasonable. I liked that there was a store and a bunch of restaurants around and easy to walk. The hotel staff is very friendly. The beds were comfortable. I don't mind coming back.

Hotel stay was really nice. Hard to up stairs with stroller but front office man came to help as soon as he seen me. Very pleasant stay. Room was very clean and lots of extra pillows and towels were provided.

Nice historic hotel. Not fancy, but clean. A market is located next door which was nice. The area is ok during the day, most of the city is full of homeless people. I didn't think it was a good idea to be outside after dark, but then what downtown area is? It served it's purpose. Thanks!

It is a bang for your buck: clean and affordable. From the outside, I was skeptical, but the room was great. The staff were very friendly.

Its an old styled hotel. Everything seems nice but the renovation needs a chance.
