Reviews
Guests generally enjoy their stay at the Mark Hopkins, highlighting the hotel's great location, beautiful views, and helpful staff. However, some guests express concerns about the hotel's aging infrastructure and high prices.
- Great location with beautiful views
- Helpful and friendly staff
- Aging infrastructure and rooms in need of updating
- High prices for parking and valet

Our room was spacious, clean with a large and comfortable bed. A plus to stay at this hotel (stayed 5 or 6 times, already) is The Top of the Mark, on the top floor of the hotel. You can dance your night away at the sound of weekly live bands while having a 360 degree view over san Francisco and the bay.

Room was relatively clean, and it is an older, historic hotel so you know it has a lot of charm. Some amenities are not here such as no coffee in the room- they have free coffee in the lobby but no coffee makers. Also no refrigerator just a locked mini bar if you have leftovers or bring any travel snacks. The top of the mark is always fun, the views are outstanding, and such a cool spot, but overall the hotel lacks some pretty trucks amenities.

like the location, service and ambiance, but room view could have been better, and of course trying to find a more inexpensive way to park the car....$100 a night gets costly..

The Mark is a classic - it's an excellent hotel. Kind of unfair to compare it to the Fairmont, but I think it's a better value.

every thing was up to my expectations except parking was very high for overnight parking.....at 100 a night it does impact my considerations on where I stay in SF....

Very poor

1. There's no place to purchase any drinks or snacks besides room service or the restaurant/bar at the top. I've been to many hotels and there's usually a small (or big) store to accommodate hotel stayers. Nearest place to purchase not-so-overpriced-water is a store down the hill. My lazy self didn't appreciate the walk back up the hill haha. 2. The TVs have no Netflix or casting capability. I felt like I was back in the 90s with the scrolling tv guide on the screen. 3. Internet is free but there's no option to purchase a higher speed. You get what you get. As someone you enjoys playing pc games after a day of work, this was a no-go for me as well. 4. The AC isn't accurate, probably since the building and system is so old. My body requires cold temperatures that would freeze a normal person's toes off. The AC here would not get cold. I ended up sleeping with the windows open at night to get some cool air in. Overall, if you want a beautiful hotel with amazing staff and you don't mind the above-mentioned things, this is the place for you.

this stay from check in to check out was phenomenal. the best staff (we love you sal!), location, top of the market afternoon cocktail, and overall experience - could not have topped off our trip more perfectly.
- 5/5
Old world style and charm with friendly and helpful staff. The location was perfect for us with a cable car stop right out the front. The Top Deck sky bar was a highlight!
- 4/5
Also, I didn't love that the Uber drivers couldn't access the parking lot in front of the hotel to pick us up as the weather wasn't the best. An Uber pick up takes a couple of minutes, didn't understand the policy. Waiting on the side of California street for several minutes wasn't great.
- 3/5
Check in was friendly, professional, and quick. Location was perfect and loved the view. Property is extremely outdated for the cost. Absolutely not a luxury or premium experience by any measure in 2026. From the facilities to the room, everything felt due for an update.

Great room, we had a corner room which had lots of space. Great views. Good location in the city as well. Although you could get water downstairs in the lobby there was none available in the rooms.

The hotel has some historic Charme Being used to the very high standards of InterContinental hotels, I was unfortunately very disappointed upon arrival. The facilities are in urgent need of renovation. Staying in the lower-level rooms is almost impossible, as the window insulation is extremely poor and does not block out the noise from the nearby street. While the rooms themselves are acceptable, cleanliness was below expectations, with dust balls in the closet and visible dirt in the corners. After initially being assigned a room on the second floor, I requested a change due to the noise. Although the room was changed, the replacement room was significantly smaller, and the concierge did not inform me of this beforehand. In addition, the check-in experience felt rather cold and impersonal. I was also surprised to see staff members wearing visibly dirty clothing, which further contributed to the disappointing overall impression.

Drinks at the Top of the Mark is always a lovely experience. Our valet for bags was so kind. It was clear he has been there for many years and goes out of his way to make each guest feel special and taken care of. Long-term employees like him make a big difference to guests. I love historic hotels and yours is one of the best.

Great hotel with tons of character. Loved the rooftop bar. Only disappointment was the limited breakfast menu and the fact that ypu could not order anything Ala Carte. For example, I wanted just a side of toast and bacon and they would not accommodate. You could only order a full breakfast.
- 3/5
Perfect location and great history but the rooms are really in shabby shape, no hot water in the shower (just warm), no bottled water in the room, no coffee in the room, ice maker broken, no grab and go breakfast options. Overall needs some attention for sure
- 3/5
The location is great, always has been. Have been here many times. Spacious rooms. Bed is the right size - They have stripped the rooms of all amenities: No tea / no coffee maker / no fridge service / no fridge > nothing The bedding is just sheets with something in between, no proper ‘duvet’ or similar

I have been staying at the intercontinental here for the past few years and this year it is totally gone downhill. They took away the coffee machines in the room. They took away the mini bar and fridge. Actually, they left the fridge and they kept it locked. They also took away the club level. So I don’t think I will be returning for those reasons.

Ice machine put on our floor. When going to the Top of the Mark after our show. Waiters ignored us until I flagged one down and was promptly told I had to order at the bar. Outside of those mishaps, the property is wonderful and conveniently located.

Hoyewas good for a single night stay prior to a morning flight. Room seemed old with holes in the walls. Bathroom fixtures were front 80’s . Clean and convenient access to the airport.

Amazing stay—the views and vibe of San Francisco’s golden age was alive and well. The room was clean and tastefully decorated. Staff friendly and professional. Wish there was coffee in the room, but the room service was excellent, as well.

It’s buce and cosy. I would say older SF hotel but in a good condition with great rooms and bathrooms. I always stay there when in SF

The rooms are very dates but the bed and the linens are very comfortable, I also love that you can actually open the windows a little bit so you can get fresh air in the room.

I loved the view. Size of the room and nice bathroom. They have nothing in the room but furniture and TV. No coffee no tea, no espresso maker. No electric tea kettle to boil water even for instant coffee. No microwave. No iron or ironing board. Just towels shampoo and wash. Very minimal for a 5 star hotel.

My first time staying here and it did not disappoint. The staff went the extra mile to accommodate us late at the Top of the Mark. Outstanding.

Great location, efficient check in despite long queue. Interiors are dated though it’s cleaned well every day. There’s no kettle no coffee machine no slippers nothing, and refrigerator was locked! U have to scan a QR code to “order” amenities which we felt was very inconvenient. Surely supplying such things should be standard?
- 1/5
It's in San Francisco -very dated interior, very rough -ice machine on floor 3 only of 17 floors -no coffee in room, no cork screw available, only two glasses in room -dirty carpet, dirty doors, marks on walls and doors, filthy windows - expensive parking -check in at 4pm took 30 min and room wasn't ready, 50 people in line. -Top of the Mark used to be stunning, now just very worn out. Tables and chair seats worn out.

This place is run down. Wallpaper peeling on the hallways, rooms are old and run down, not worth the price they change. Will not return.
- 4/5
Historically charming and perfectly located for my needs, I was pleased with my choice. The quality of the old hotel still shines through in so much of the design and architecture. Staff in both restaurants seemed overworked and testy, but the atmospheres were worth it. My safe didn’t work and the refrigerator was locked - old mini bar - which disappoints when one has leftovers. No lobby bar.
- 4/5
The room was spacious and clean, with great views (I was on the 7th floor). Only negative was that the shower took a very long time to get warm/hot.

There was nothing in the room except 2 water glasses in the bathroom. The complementary coffee downstairs was weak (and fake cream). No store to buy sodas etc. (just a vending machine). Front desk people were friendly but didn't even know the closest location to buy real coffee and a bagel. Not staying there again.
- 3.5/5
Breakfast needs to offer fruit and yoghurt separate from buffet. $46 is a lot for just fruit and yoghurt. Love Top of Mark. Staff is fantastic. No water in the room except room service. Rooms and halls etc a bit shabby.
- 5/5
It’s a landmark yes, but the staff hoist the experience over the top.
- 5/5
Room was very nice, and clean. I loved the location. The only thing they could work on is the rooftop bar. Very friendly service but the cocktails we got were not very good.
- 1.5/5
The WiFi was absolutely horrible and seeing as I was working remotely / on a work trip this was a big deal. The gym was also essentially nonexistent with very few machines (and old).
- 1/5
Would never book intercontinental if this is the new standards. No Amenities in room dated hotel need refresh staff and management don’t know what hats happening both tell you different things property is under renovations not stated on Expedia
- 4/5
Traveled with my family of 4. Old and charming building and very friendly staff. Not suited for families with small children, especially if you need a refrigerator as they don’t offer one. We had to put milk in the ice bucket with ice so it wouldn’t go bad. They offered full sized beds, not queen sized. Parking was $77 per night (ouch). But the view from the 8th floor was very nice.
- 3/5
If you’re not used to staying in historic hotels with limited amenities might give this one a pass. It needs a reno badly (2026 review.) The location in Nob Hill was excellent tho.

Beautiful Historic hotel! The Bar on the top floor we had the best waiter ever made our evening Spectacular.
- 4.5/5
TP could have been higher quality! Missed having a plain soap bar (boyfriend hated the liquid soap scent and we had to buy a bar of soap at a corner store).
- 4/5
If you're searching for a sleek, modern hotel, this isn't it — but if you appreciate old-world character, you might feel right at home. We first stayed here about 10 years ago and loved it. Returning recently, I think the place will soon need a refresh. The beds were comfortable, the staff were welcoming, and you can actually open the windows for fresh air. Top of the Mark is a must at sunset, the food there is amazing. One small gripe: the complimentary morning coffee in the lobby is a nice touch, but there was no tea option. Worth knowing if you're a tea drinker. Overall, a pleasant stay.
- 3.5/5
The location The front desk person was more interested in chit-chatting with certain customer when he could clearly see there was a long line of people waiting to check in. I was then given the wrong room (paid extra for a corner room). They eventually corrected the situation but the experience was more than frustrating.

Just returned from my second annual birthday overnight at the Mark Hopkins. I'm a Bay Area native who grew up in the East Bay and attended high school in San Francisco. I had a few high school dances at the Mark. I knew what the Top of the Mark was long before I could have legally been admitted - it's a local legend. As a child and youth I held the firm conviction that anyone who actually stayed at the Mark Hopkins had it made in life. So on my 50th I decided to make that happen for myself. My husband and I liked it so much that we returned for my 51st. I intend for this to be a yearly tradition going forward. Beautiful, iconic building, fabulous, attentive staff, and jaw-dropping views. What's not to love?

Nice area and hotel has lovely charm to it. Large room at front but faces onto traffic/team line and windows are very thin and both those and the blackout blinds could do with being updated - ask from a room at the rear of hotel for a better sleep!

location
- 3/5
such a shame. understaffed, everything needs an uplift. rooms have no power, tv service is like a motel, etc etc.
- 2/5
The hotel cleaners were exceptional but the hotel is in need of a major refresh. The decor is outdated, no mini fridge available, and the bathroom has no storage at all. The plumbing fixtures were old and the tv was older than my teenage son. The staff were very friendly and helpful (except when I asked the front desk about food storage for our early morning excursion when the hotel agent snapped at me) but unless I am trying to stay somewhere with an “antique” designation, I would not stay here again. Last time I was here was 15 years ago and the Mark Hopkins has not advanced since then. I was disappointed.
- 4/5
Room poorly equipped: mini-fridge not working and had lock on the door, no coffee machine, no water.
- 5/5
very friendly staff, both at reception and in restaurant
- 5/5
Absolutely fabulous staff from the front desk to the waiter at the restaurant. The rooms were lovely too! And the location in SF was safe, clean and close to Chinatown. We will definitely be staying there again. It’s Luxury hotel at average SF hotel prices.
- 3/5
Although the hotel is historical, I thought it was outdated and rundown. I was surprised at how old everything was. Room was pretty clean, but seriously outdated. Needs a big renovation!

- 5/5
Classic San Francisco elegance - it isn’t cheap, but it’s real. Nothing really, it’s in the middle of SF, but that’s why you went there.
- 4/5
The location was 8th floor, nice city view. The bed was very comfortable, loved the pillows too! Staff was very nice! There was no tea kettle to heat water in, or any kind of coffee pot, love having some kind of coffee in the room, example a tea kettle to heat water in for instant coffee or tea.

We LOVED this place. The staff was so lovely and welcoming. The breakfast buffet rocked! The location was adjacent to the Old part of town, yet quiet. Very walkable. Our room was really nice and so was the pool. If you are staying in Hoi An, this is a great boutique hotel.

Seemed to be light on staff, called for room service multiple times before someone answered and we'd tried to call the front desk before arrival to request early checking and no one answered on 4 separate occasions. Ordered room service for breakfast, oatmeal, eggs Benedict and 2 latte coffees, almost $100 with this that and the other added. Way too expensive. - Disappointed and won't be rushing back.

The Mark Hopkins is a classic and overall wears its 100+ year-old heritage well. True, some of its original opulence has faded with time and trends, but it's still a great place to stay, especially considering the very reasonable rates. The staff are friendly and professional and the Top of the Mark is still the best view in town. My only complaint is about the air handling in the rooms, which sounds like a jet engine every time it starts up.

Staff was friendly, but the hotel is very dated. The room was ok, but again, it’s very old. As well as lacking basic amenities. For example there is nowhere to purchase a bottle of water, or anything else to drink. The front desk doesn’t even have any for sale.

Only disappointment was the hotel bar “Top of the Mark” was closed for special events every night. It was part of the reason to stay there. Sad. It’s a beautiful spot! Love the location.

The staff here are the best! Every employee we've interacted with, from the managers to the housekeepers, have been so friendly and bright. The culture of hospitality here sets this place apart. Also, loved the Top of the Mark! If you get Joe as a waiter youre in great hands!

Absolutely loved staying here, would recommend and would definitely stay again. Very cosy room with super comfortable bed, daily housekeeping and great staff. Overall fairly quiet, didn’t hear any other guests but the windows are a little on the thin side so I’d recommend ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper and ask for a room away from elevators. Enjoyed having a robe which can be requested from house keeping. Free coffee available in reception on a morning and there’s also a water bottle refill station. Area is lovely, felt very safe, cable car passes right out the front. One thing to note is the hotel is at the top of the hill so it’s steep few blocks if you’re coming up from Union Square!

We had such a wonderful Thanksgiving stay! We could see the Golden Gate Bridge from our room as well as a fantastic view of Grace Cathedral. Our bed was so comfortable! Overall a fantastic place to stay when visiting San Francisco (and I’m a native!).

Coffee in the lobby ran out at 9:30 am and it took 30 minutes to get a new refill. The elevators were very slow and very full. Even if it stopped on our floor, it took almost a half hour to get in because it was always full. We opted to carry our luggage up the stairs (two flights) to check in because of the amount of time it was taking. I’ve stayed here in the past and this is the most chaotic. Maybe it’s because of the holidays. We were disappointed that the Too of the Mark no longer served Snday brunch.

I did not have breakfast. The room was nice and clean - spacious

Wonderful experience! The staff was very friendly and professional.

Very courteous staff and our room was ready early

Staff was friendly and helpful
- 4/5
The bed and quality linens was the star! Staff were very congenial and accommodating and the bathroom immaculate. I enjoyed immersing myself in the atmosphere and ambience of a golden past era, especially views from top floor. I specifically wanted that old world experience and the decor didn't disappoint. My only discontent was the food and the not much value proposition on pricing restaurant. Brunch price changes daily! I sense there may be some financial distress and need to upgrade without sacrificing image. I hope IHG can do that. Mark Hopkins is an icon

Great historic hotel
- 5/5
Beautiful classy hotel. The staff is amazing and their hospitality made us feel so welcome.
- 5/5
yes
- 5/5
This is a very beautiful hotel and you can tell that all of the architecture is a work of art. The only part about it that is a little difficult is the entryway to the parking lot it's not clearly marked and is actually the middle of a crosswalk which is a little weird. Aside from that the interior is immaculate and their Christmas decorations were so wonderful. The room is incredibly clean with a beautiful view. Vaulted ceilings with well thought out amenities.
- 5/5
Sal who helped take the car was very nice and provided great restaurant tips. He should be a concierge
- 5/5
Love all amenities! Staff so nice hotel beautiful
- 5/5
Great
- 4/5
There was hair in the shower a glass stain on the table. No express check out
- 5/5
Our room was super clean, QUIET, and comfortable. The staff were kind and eager to be helpful. The Top of the Mark served DELICIOUS appetizers and cocktails. We really enjoyed staying there.
- 5/5
The staff were extraordinary..I couldn't help but
- 3/5
The location is stunning; staff were kind, but there are fewer amenities than I would have imagined. Still, a gorgeous, historic hotel.
- 3/5
The bills for breakfast were not handled correctly. They messed up the coffee order
- 5/5
Courteous staff, clean room, view, and beautiful Christmas decorations.
- 5/5
We enjoyed the comfortable bed, nice towels and historical charm
- 3/5
On check in there was a very long line. The front desk man was nice at first, then as he was handing my key dismissive and as I was asking a question, he was walking away and only briefly acknowledged with an unhelpful answer. I then asked if I should stand in a extremely large line of people getting on the elevator. He said yes. I went to stand in line only to find out that guests of the hotel could shortcut the line as they were not going to the top of the mark. The door man was very kind and the man hosting the Nob Hill Club was very kind as I was looking for a non touristy spot for a glass of wine with a business associate. At the end of my stay I did go up to the top of the mark as I hadn't been up there for 10 years or so and it was very full with tourists and the space is not being kept up. looks dated and run down. My room looked dated and run down. Overall Its a beautiful historical hotel but I was somewhat disappointed with how it is being kept.
- 5/5
Room was very clean, bed great and service flawless.
- 4/5
Stayed many, many times and will continue to do so
- 3/5
Staff is great, and the ambiance is nice. But the rooms need to be remodeled. There old and thing like my chair were broken.
- 4/5
Beautiful hotel, shame the bar at The Top of the Mark is not as it used to be. Rooms could do with some updating. The Thanksgiving dinner was not as good as we had hoped, no cranberry sauce, we asked for more gravy as our food was a little dry but none came. They ran out of desserts, it would have been nice for more traditional desserts such as pumpkin pie, apple crumble. The restaurant was not busy at all but our waiter seemed a little flustered.
- 5/5
Outstanding!!!!
- 5/5
It was a very nice 3 days with my daughter. Had a good time. She especially loved Top of the Mark. We had a nice meal as well. Will do it again.
- 5/5
Fantastic staff and very clean rooms in a classic atmosphere.
- 5/5
Great hotel! Very centrally located.
- 4/5
Nice staff
- 5/5
Everything was wonderful, and the staff was very helpful
- 5/5
Room was comfortable, and clean! Staff and general ambience was great! Amenities luxurious!
- 3/5
But outdated. Didnt meet basic needs: No coffee in room and locked fridges.
- 5/5
We were in town for an event on Nob Hill so the location was perfect. Hadn't bee to the Top of the Mark in years so it was fun to have a sunset cocktail and enjoy the amazing view. The staff were great and the room was comfortable (also with a great view). There was a minor issue with the bathroom door which couldn't be closed properly. All in all, an enjoyable San Francisco experience.
- 1/5
This hotel provides none if the amenities expected of a luxury hotel. There is no refrigerator, no coffee maker, no bathrobes, and the windiws, through which you might enjoy fabulous views, are filthy. Do not bother staying here until they've figured out their problems
- 5/5
Clean room with a beautiful view. Easy to navigate. Walkable.
- 3/5
The room was in okay condition. The chair at the desk is ready to fall apart and the water from the sink in the bathroom would not shut off.
- 5/5
Everything is perfect!
- 3/5
Water and hydration is essential and given complimentary or for purchase in the room at all nice hotels. Additionally, we were planing to go for drinks at the TOP OF THE MARK. It was supposed to be one of the highlights of our stay. Unfortunately, it was closed for a private event! It would’ve been nice to be notified as this would have prompted me to re-schedule my trip for another weekend. I was disappointed to say the least!
- 5/5
The room had lovely views, a nice long corridor as you enter the room. The bed was well appointed and comfortable. The staff was pleasant and accommodating.
- 5/5
Room was spotless, view was great. Location was perfect for the party we were attending. David at check in was marvelous. I would stay here anytime!

We were after a romantic weekend in an iconic SF hotel, and the Mark Hopkins didn't disappoint.
- 4/5
I have stayed at the Mark Hopkins before and had loved it. I was disappointed this time. Our room was small and not very comfortable. The front desk staff were not helpful or courteous. We had breakfast at the hotel which was nice.
- 4/5
The staff was very friendly and the room clean. Very good service.
- 4/5
Room is great
- 3/5
There were a lot of add ons and surprise fees added to our trip.
- 5/5
Room and bathroom was large, clean and the bed was very comfortable.
- 1/5
Outdated, poor service, no water inside the room they were charging $6.00 for a small bottle of water. The restrooms in the lobby were closed at 11pm on Saturday night.
- 3/5
No coffee in rooms
- 5/5
Loved this classic, old, historic, well located icon. The amenities were minimal, example, no coffee in room, soaps and shampoo on the wall only. No bar soap. Very little luxury other than walls itself. We had dinner in the restaurant and unknowingly (cost) ordered 6 bottles of water for the table which cost $60! And the waiter didn’t even empty each bottle! Beware of incredible SF service fees and taxes, of course not the hotel’s fault!
- 4/5
Unparalleled views of the bay area are available from the hotel. Rooms are extremely spacious. The hotel is at the top of California Street and the cable car lines run just outside its doors. It's easy to get to the financial district, marina, and other neighborhoods though be aware of the steep hills and relative seclusion of the hotel when booking.
- 5/5
Classic San Fransisco hotel in lovely Nob Hill. Staff was top notch. We had an issue (not with the hotel, but
- 4/5
Staff good. Put out by the Nob Hill charge after thr event. We were kindly given a kettle but there were no mugs in the room
- 2/5
The hotel is dated and in need of a renovation. While it looks amazing on the outside, the rooms are dirty and worn. The bathrooms are small and outdated. The food at the restaurants is overpriced and sub par.
- 5/5
We went nextdoor to The Fairmont and patronized their lovely lobby bar, enjoyed the cocktails there and the welcome
- 3/5
Not many amenities for the price. No fridge or coffee in room.
- 5/5
Clean, comfortable and close to Masonic and Grace Cathedral.
- 5/5
All good .......
- 5/5
Great staff and great accommodations
- 5/5
The room was perfect with an amazing view of the city and the Bay. Wonderful staff and they were always friendly and helpful. The Top of the Mark was a great place to have a drink after the show we saw at The Masonic. We will definitely stay again.
- 3/5
Fire alarm test went off for a very long time the morning of my conference 20 min?). Also stains on the carpet all over the guest room. The history of the hotel is cool, but it is definitely dated.
- 4/5
The location on the hill. The stuff efficient and polite.
- 5/5
Visited the roof top bar. A lot of fun. Vibrant great music, great cocktails.
- 1/5
Mini fridge not operational. Our food from Ossos not be able to refrigerate. Frank at front desk not helpful, would not give his supervisor name. First time we have been treated this poorly at Mark Hopkins . Wow, have stayed here time and time again and probably will be the last time.
- 3/5
Room was clean, big bedroom and bathroom
- 4/5
iconic top of the mark. it is san francisco history, a must see.
- 3/5
Nice hotel, needs som TLC
- 5/5
The gentleman who checked us in was so nice! He upgraded because it was our anniversary and signed us up for the hotel benefits so we could get a discount. The view from the Top of the Mark is fantastic and they happened to have live music as well.
- 5/5
We went to the Top of the Mark for coctails and appetizers (they don’t serve dinner). The view was amazing and well worth the visit. Overall very pleased with our stay.

I was surprised by our stay at the InterContinental San Francisco. It’s a beautiful and historic hotel, but my wife and I both have dust mite allergies, and we encountered serious issues. After the first night, I experienced allergic reactions, including a runny nose and coughing. My wife developed a rash on her face with small red dots. Initially, we thought it might be due to weather or climate changes. However, after the second night, my symptoms persisted, and my wife’s condition worsened significantly—her face and head were red, as if she’d been sunburned for hours. While she was in bed that morning, an about 10mm dust ball fell into her mouth. She kept mentioning feeling something falling from the ceiling. Upon close inspection, we found the AC vent on her side of the bed was filled with thick, old dust, blowing it onto us whenever the AC was on. I took photos of the vent to document it. If that dust ball hadn’t fallen, we might not have identified the cause of our allergies. We informed the receptionist, who moved us to a new room, and our symptoms returned to normal within a day. I offered to show the photos, but the receptionist wasn’t interested. The dust in the vent was so thick and old, I wonder if it’s ever cleaned. A thorough cleaning with a brush and strong vacuum twice a year could have prevented this.
- 5/5
Excellent staff who prioritised individual needs
- 4/5
Staff was excellent
- 5/5
The service and staff were amazing. We were upgraded in our room so we could have a view of the bay. Everyone was so accommodating and helpful. Would highly recommend staying here. It is an older hotel but very clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Excellent place close to everything
- 4/5
Mark Hopkins was the hotel that I stayed on my first visit to San Francisco over 35 years ago. The hotel has maintained its good services. My only complaint is the elevator wait could be very long specially when they were groups of people going to Top of the Mark.
- 5/5
Wonderful place, great location
- 3/5
The rooms are clean but very dated. No free water bottles in the room. Room service menu is very limited and service ends early.
- 5/5
Great location and room, would 100% return.
- 5/5
Love the location
- 5/5
❤️

The Top of the Mark is a beautiful old hotel with lots of history. I loved the old style of the rooms and we had a nice view from the 10th floor. The mattresses were also very good! The bathrooms were small but efficient. AC worked well and you could open the windows too. One of the issues was thin walls and I know a lot of hotels have them but I expected more from a hotel of this stature. The first morning we were awoken by an alarm in the room next door that went on for 10 minutes at 6am.We are guessing he was in the shower so it eventually went off. The next morning he appeared to have a 7am conference call that he put on his speaker phone that lasted for 30 minutes. We could hear every word. In a hotel with better insulated walls it wouldn't have been a big deal. So, be ready for that possibility. The Top of the Mark still has one of the better views in SF. We went up the first afternoon and it was spectacular. A brilliant, clear sunny day. Prices are high as you would expect but your paying for the view. The windows were really dirty that took a little shine off the view but I am not critical as it must be a mammoth task to keep them clean. We did have one big disappointment. I confirmed that the Top of the Mark closed at 11pm. We were delayed that evening and didn't return until 10:45pm. I had brought my 2 friends back because they had never seen the view. We were told the Mark was closed. Not even a quick look was available. It was sad. Please stay open until 11pm.
- 5/5
Very enjoyable one night stay, enjoyed dinner and breakfast at the hotel. We attended a concert at the Masonic Theatre which was only a five minute walk away
- 5/5
Staff was extremely helpful. Beautiful room with great view.
- 4/5
Amazing views!
- 5/5
We stayed at the MarK Hopkins for an Anniversary Party with friends (held at the Tonga Room in the Fairmont). Check-in was slow and a bit disorganized but the room was lovely and we enjoyed pre and post-gaming at the Top of the Mark. Breakfast the following morning was delicious. Beautiful, historic San Francisco hotel!
- 5/5
This is a beautiful, historic hotel! A great and convenient location, with cable cars nearby. The room was lovely and we had an amazing view! The staff was very friendly and helpful. We loved the views and ambience at the Top of the Mark! It’s a wonderful hotel overall and a real part of San Francisco’s history.
- 5/5
This Hotel is a historic beauty, iconic of the making of San Francisco. Their Top of the Mark is one of SF's wonders. They upgraded me to a suite for free. I was very happy staying at the Mark Hopkins and will be coming back.
- 4/5
Room was very clean; staff at front desk and rooftop bar professional. Quiet; nice bathroom; bed comfortable.
- 5/5
Great service! Gave us early check-in with no problems.
- 3/5
This is a lovely hotel with an amazing history. There was some confusion at the front desk with my IHG number and for some reason, I now have a duplicate account and need to call IHG. Great. Our room, while spacious, smelled of stale cigarette smoke. Time to change the carpets already! The Keurig machine in our room did not work.
- 5/5
Pleasant stay
- 4/5
CONVINENTN LOCATIIOSN VERRY NICE BADL MASN
- 1/5
We had a change room because the first room checked in, smell like cigarette smokes, and hotel staff drowned out with chemical perfume to disguise. It was unbearable. Also, bathtubs and sink water was yellow from old pipes. We end up moving to another room in the middle of the night and that room had yellow water coming out of the sink as well. This is AMERICA NOT THIRD WORLD PROBLEM! This Intercontinental Hotel is not representing the brand. This specific hotel is gross and not worth chancing even if price is reasonable. Probably there’s a reason why.
- 4/5
Our stay was good, convenient location for visiting our family. Room was a good size and clean, only downside was the size of the bathroom - tiny! We were on the 3rd floor at the front of the building which noisy at night with people standing outside and traffic noise. Not awful but to be noted. Housekeeping was amazing, very thorough and friendly lady. They charge a resort fee which you are meant to be able to use as a credit for food etc, we used the Top of the Mark cocktail bar but then couldn’t use for that! Ordered room service, the dessert was a joke, trio of cheesecake, tiniest bites of cheese cake and only two and a biscuit!
- 5/5
Very nice location and safe area
- 5/5
Great ambiance
- 5/5
Clean room
- 4/5
A very special week for myself and my partner, and the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins was a good choice for us, My annual pilgrimage to the Bay Area to escape the heat of New Orleans. We wanted to treat ourselves. It compares favorably to some of the other "Grand Dame" hotels of that era that we've stayed in over the past few years here and in other cities.
- 5/5
I had an excellent stay at the InterContinental Park. Roy, who checked me in, was extremely kind and helpful. Additionally, the housekeeping staff were outstanding.
- 5/5
Nothing to add at this moment.
- 5/5
Our first stay was a delight! Service was excellent! Rooms have spacious feel. Tall ceilings are very nice. We had a corner king with bridge views. Top of the mark is iconic. Especially fine is the veterans free shot of whiskey!
- 3/5
My stay at IHG Mark Hopkins started badly as the desk clerk brought E.Coast attitude to the W.Coast! I arrived early and noted I knew this and just wanted to drop my bags and go out. What I got was attitude and poor service. He said he’d contact me when the room was ready. He didn’t! But then, I didn't expect him to! Far better service, from Roy, when I returned. The hotel just seems dated and in need of a makeover/refurbishment. There was peeling wallpaper in my room and the bed frame had odd 'repairs' and plenty of dust behind the bed. The hotel reminded me of classic UK seaside hotels I visited as a kid 60 years ago. Some things just seemed incongruous, the safe is newish and the coffee machine is new and great yet the TV is dated (with blown pixels) and the OSG is hopeless! But, the bed was comfortable! To check-out I used the app (after the language issues!) I feel a little bad about leaving a review like this as the hotel is ok, the bed is ok, some (most?) of the staff are lovely, maybe even the guy I encountered is a nice guy and was just having a bad day (just not sure why that was my problem!) The room was sold as a 'bridge view' room. I guess there’s only so much you can do about a 'bridge view room' when there are buildings in the way, but you do catch a glimpse of the GG between the buildings (when not obscured by SF cloud/rain) and I’m not complaining about it. I only visited as I wanted to tick off the last of the big four on Nob Hill. Oh well. Now I know!
- 5/5
Fantastic no complaints here
- 3/5
Rooms definitely need to be updated. Limited dining options. Staff was great

Gorgeous elegant old time hotel exquisitely maintained. Couldn’t be better! Get a junior suite if you can afford it. Very comfortable.
- 5/5
Amazing location, be prepared for walking the hills.
- 5/5
Felt very luxurious. Spacious room and great view
- 5/5
LOVED the bed! So comfy!
- 5/5
This place has kept up its classic status! Iconic hotel on Nob Hill w great service, views and comfortable rooms!
- 5/5
Amazing stayed with them
- 4/5
Front desk employees were ok, not a warm greeting when we arrived. Overall a nice stay.
- 2/5
Very old hotel.
- 5/5
Lovely room looking out onto glorious SF. Comfortable bed, lovely pillows, good size room and genuine old style hospitality throughout the hotel. I felt like I had met every employee many times before. Thank you for surviving and greeting the world with such love.
- 5/5
Amazing amenities and services will definitely return
- 5/5
We had a fantastic time at the Intercontinental Hotel. The service and personnel were amazing. The views of the Town from the hotel were amazing.
- 5/5
Signs or information where ice machine is. And parking is almost a night worths
- 4/5
The location and view on top if the hill makes for a quiet beautiful stay in San Francisco. The service and staff were excellent and friendly. We received great recommendations from Sal.
- 4/5
I love the nostalgic air of old San Francisco and the location on Nob Hill. Good value in an expensive city. Staff are super nice, rooms clean with good linens. I would like to see the Top of the Mark updated/restored to its former glory. Also would like to see San Francisco’s public broadcasting station KQED included in tv channel options. A classic hotel that I return to regularly.
- 4/5
Although old it has its charm. Love the bed and the cleanliness. Great location form safety perspective but. It much to do in the area and walking is hard due to the hills.
- 5/5
This is a historic old property with an elegant feel. Food was excellent in both the restaurant and the bar. Service was excellent!
- 5/5
Room service was excellent and always timely. Food was delicious and thoughtfully presented.
- 5/5
Friendly staff, great location and very comfortable room!
- 5/5
Clean room. Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent location in SF.
- 5/5
Mark Hopkins is a classic for a reason. Never misses in cleanliness, customer service, comfort, or safety. Great hotel in a wonderful city that is absolutely and noticeably on a rebound. SF is back. Visit. Enjoy.
- 3/5
This day was good however, in the middle of the night, our room flooded from the hallway where the ice machine had failed. When we brought this up to the checkout person, he didn’t even apologize. He just asked if the Engineer knew. I told him yes I let the Engineer know that the flooded hallway made it all the way into our room
- 5/5
Comfortable bed. Close to Union Square. Loved drinks at Top of the Mark!
- 5/5
The room was a good size and was very comfortable we really enjoyed our stay
- 5/5
Great view of the city. Comfortable bed and friendly staff.
- 5/5
An iconic luxury hotel in the high end Nob Hill area. The highlight was going to the Top of the Mark on the 19th floor, with its 360 degree view. It is now an elegant bar that also serves appetizers.
- 5/5
The service and location are excellent
- 5/5
Excellent place to stay
- 4/5
Staff were nice and very accommodating upon request but the room was bare bones. Not one water bottle, qtip or anything was left for our comfort. Fortunately there is a water refill station in the lobby but it was not working when we were there. With some minimal touches added you could really elevate the client experience.
- 5/5
History! Such a wonderful historic hotel with a fantastic bar!
- 5/5
Great location !
- 5/5
the property is beautiful its just sad to see how the local politicians have destroyed the areas beauty with allowing homelessness drugs and crime...
- 5/5
Beautiful historic hotel within walking distance of the Masonic. Staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms are comfortable and beautiful and our room had a nice view of the city. The only thing I didn’t like was the smell of the shampoo and soap provided by the hotel.
- 4/5
The location is very accessible with everything, easy grab-to-go food, Powell street you see mostly want you like. Parking in the hotel ($77 a night ), the bad side during our stay is the elevator, very, very slow. We stayed 9 floor and ice machine is broken however staff could have put note, like what floor to ice, which is in the 3floor or 5th so that guests will go straight where the ice is available ( in my own opinion) 😃. Also, pillows are not comfortable, very squishy and not cosy at all. Otherwise I would rate it just 7-10:)
- 5/5
Great reception ,Great corner room, Friendly helpful staff
- 5/5
We loved the Intercontinental! It was a very high-end experience for a reasonable rate. The beds were comfortable, and the view was nice. And very close to the Trolley stop!
- 5/5
I always stay there in SF.
- 3/5
It was a hotel. That is all I can say really.

Staff was wonderful, so sweet and we loved our housekeeper! Extremely respectful and kind all around. The rooms are a bit outdated in some areas, that’s why I’m giving a 4 star. After spending a little more money we felt it should have been a bit nicer, but overall it was so clean I didn’t even care to look twice.

The staff is very nice… the hotel is located in the highest point of SF a perfect 360 view of the city

We ate at both the top and bottom and were very satisfied.

Service was great. Property is really OLD and OUTDATED. One of the bedside lamps didn't work in our room. Mattress is saggy/lumpy, obvious need of change. One of the elevators didn't work. The one's that did, felt like a safety hazard. I would've taken the stairs to the 7th floor but they all had emergency exit warnings.

Some very pleasant staff and some not so. Good location.

Always wanted to stay at Mark Hopkin. Just a little on the expensive side.

Fabulous hotel , although the bar at the Top of the Mark has fallen in service . We waited about 40 minutes to be seated & although a wait person said they would be right back , they didn’t so we left . This at one time was the best bar in San Francisco . No longer

Loved, would definitely stay again

The staff were courteous and helpful. The facility was clean and orderly. The room was spacious and well stocked. While we did not request a room with a view, we had one of the best views.

Very historic hotel

I was expecting more from Intercontinental in terms of property conditions. Hotel looks great from outside and situated at one of best spots in the city but the rooms are poorly maintained. The staff was collaborative to resolve our queries.

The Mark is classic old school. Hadn't been here in years. The room was spacious and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful at every turn. The location is great for being close to the action yet "above it all" atop Nob Hill. Old school is good school!

It’s a very historical property that has a lot of charm
