Staff was nice. I wasn't prepared for the vintage tech: radiator for heat that I couldn't turn off, or the elevator. I see why there was a person opening/closing the doors back then.

I appreciated how they were able to preserve the charm of the property. I also truly appreciated how hospitable, thoughtful, and kind the General Manager, Megan, was toward me. Her attitude and genuine concern for guests made a big difference during my stay. Despite the property being old, Megan’s professionalism and kindness made me overlook many of its limitations. When I checked in, she was very polite and friendly, and she always considered the welfare of guests. Because the card reader for my security deposit wasn’t working (despite 4–6 attempts to reboot it), Megan told me not to worry and allowed me to rest first in my room. For several days, the card reader continued to fail, but Megan reassured me multiple times that she trusted me and that she would take care of it as the General Manager. She even approved a late checkout until 5 PM since no incoming guest was scheduled for my room. All these gestures made me feel valued, and I was planning to extend my stay partly because of her excellent service. Although the photos looked nice online, the property is actually very old. Housekeeping does not clean often, and the hallway carpets were sometimes smelly. The old heater made it difficult to keep the room warm during cold weather. More importantly, I experienced harassment and discrimination from one of the staff members, which became the most alarming part of my stay. Despite my clear arrangement with the GM for a late checkout, a male staff member knocked on my door around 12:00–12:30 PM on Sunday and aggressively insisted that it was past the 11 AM checkout time. I tried to calmly explain the agreement I had with Megan, but he refused to listen. I asked if I could at least take a shower and finish packing, or even pay for an extension, but he said no. I repeatedly asked him to call Megan to verify our arrangement. He pretended to call someone and then walked away quickly when I tried to talk to him again. I felt unsafe, intimidated, and disrespected. Because I was alone, scared, and not being listened to, I contacted 911 for assistance. The operator stayed on the line while I quickly took a shower and packed. Two police officers arrived to ensure I could leave the property safely. I was crying because I trusted the GM’s arrangement, but it was not honored by the staff. After leaving, I called Megan. She was shocked and apologized, confirming that there was indeed an email endorsement about my late checkout. Unfortunately, the staff did not verify anything and chose to escalate the situation in a very unprofessional and frightening way. This experience was traumatic, and I would caution future guests: While the location is accessible and the price is affordable, please be very careful. Always ensure everything is documented. No guest should go through an experience like this again.

The only issues were: the restroom door didn’t have a lock, there was a body hair in the “unused” coffee cup, and a bad odor in the hallways. All in all, the prices were not too bad, but the place can do better.

Easy transportation to the entire city, rooms with just enough space to unpack and relax and two communal rooms to work, hang out, do laundry or prep food. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great value in San Francisco. Shout out to Meghan and Rolando for being extra helpful with check-in/out at weird hours and storing my bags for much longer than planned on my check out day.

At check-in no one was at the front counter. I had to sit and wait outside. The bathroom had mold the chemicals that they use for cleaning was very strong in the room. Luckily the windows were accessible to open to air it out the room. I asked for specific service and was denied Was told to contact management management are useless.

First, the front desk is not always staffed. If you arrive at midday or late in the evening, you may find no one there and the front door locked. Since the room keys are also needed to access the building, this means you might not even be able to get inside. They claim there is a “resident manager” you can call for help, but that number is essentially useless. I tried calling multiple times, both during the day and at night, and not once did anyone ever answer. If you have an urgent issue, there’s basically no way to reach staff. Second, the hotel facilities are very outdated. Everything feels old and worn, and there were also quite a few strange guests around, which did not feel very safe. In summary: good location, but poor management, unreliable service, and uncomfortable environment. I strongly suggest looking elsewhere if you want a worry-free stay.

Location Staff wasn't helpful. They gave us a room with a small double bed without extra bed for our kid even if it was requested so our kid ended up sleeping of the floor. They didn't help us finding a solution or looking for an alternative. The lift wasn't working a few times and we had to use the staircase till floor 5 with the stroller. It wasn't clean. During the night there were fire testing. Overall probably the worst experience I have ever had.

The location is fantastic. The price is excellent. The bedding feels clean. I liked having the handbasin in the room instead of the bathroom. The sanitaryware looks new. Power points are in good locations. Having access to hot water in the dining room is appreciated, as I was able to make tea with my own teabags. Some hooks in the bathroom would be very practical. A supply of tea bags in the dining room would not cost much but would be welcome. We notified the staff that some small insects made their way into the room. I'm sure they will get onto it before it becomes a bigger problem. The room was quite warm, even with the window open, as we travelled in summer.

Rooms are in the small side, but they are really comfortable, the hotel is really well connected. The staff is really friendly, I was there for just one night and I would stay again, one or two nights. The hotel is very old, getting on and off the elevator was a bit of hassle. If you have limited mobility this hotel is not for you. When I arrive there was toilet paper in the toilet (I was hesitant if it had been properly clean before my arrival) i found a cockroach in the bath tub, the carpets in the hallway are quite dirty

I like how it is convenient/near to the convention place I attended and other establishments. The staff are kind and accommodating. Actually liked the old school elevator but may not be okay to others…it was a new experience for me so I liked it. Not noise proof. Could hear someone banging something so early in the morning. Music can also be heard sometimes from nearby establishment.

The staff here was so friendly, and welcoming. The person at the front desk was considerate and always greeted me, even when I was rushing out the door. I forgot some food in the fridge in my room when I checked out, and when I called to ask if I could come pick it back up, they put the food container in a plastic bag, put my name on it, and stored it with the rest of my luggage. I was so thankful for this! Overall the hotel was small albeit charming, and my stay was comfortable. For the price, I was really pleased with the service and quality.

I booked this property based on price and location. It was offered at a great rate (based on the date booked, New Years Eve). This property was my 2nd choice for booking (based on rate) but very quickly be came my 1st due the increased safety I felt over my 1st choice. It is quite close to Union Square. The property is dated but retains character. The two staff members I dealt with were very friendly. I routinely travel to that area, in hopes of finding cheap and safe lodging, and this is the property that I will now search first when needing to stay in that area. And just an FYI, it’s pretty close to the BART. Thanks Ikon, see you again!

Comfy bed, great location (close to lots of public transport options, union square and chinatown), good shower and fridge worked well. Shared kitchen with disposable cutlery and a couple tables. Reception staff were very friendly. No air con (missed that this wasn't included when booking), single window in room faced directly towards a concrete wall so there was minimal light and the room was quite stuffy with no way to air it out, no hair dryer, a couple of small bugs in the room we had to care of. Room was on the small side, difficult to fit two large suitcases without being in the way.

Booked this place after the original hotel turned out to be a scam / dump and needed to find somewhere else on the day. This one was in a great location, a good size, comfortable bed, and had a fridge and good wifi. I didn't use them, but this hotel has a kitchen / breakfast room guests can use, and laundry room. The staff were very friendly. Main problem is this room didn't have air con. Which meant the windows need to be open a lot, which adds to the noise. The location is good for getting about but is not good for the noise if you have a street facing room. Not so much the traffic but the air con fans on the building opposite that are constant low level but intermittently very loud. There was also a loud droning noise late at night from the parking structure opposite. The room was large but basic and quite dated, especially the bathroom.

One manager was very nice and helped a lot The on site managet ariel was very rude and unhelpful purposily started drama with us and was just a unpleasant person to have to deal with to much attitude
- 3.5/5
The staff were very helpful. The location was good (near some of the sights and the business district). The location was also very safe (compared with places like Market St.). The room was quite small but it included a bathroom, which was good. I needed to read the instructions to understand how to use the shower, but once going, it was fine. The room was quite small and there was no view at all. The elevator is very old fashioned one, but it works OK. Basically the room was fine.
- 2/5
I learned through experience that the hotel is a residential hotel, which through me off. This included witnessing a woman finishing her business as she opened what is apparently a shared bathroom as I got off the elevator. It also included the man next door to mine essentially living his life with his door wide open. It was clean, staff was friendly, but it gives hostel more than hotel. Just be aware of the location's purpose and use. It is a residential hotel and feels more like a hostel than a hotel - which is totally fine if that is what you need.

There are very questionable residents that live at this hotel. The person living in the room next to me would blast music, constantly scream, throw stuff around. It was a very uncomfortable experience and when I complained I was told he lives there and there’s nothing they can do. There was clearly hard drugs (and maybe alcohol and mental illness) related to this extreme behaviour. It was by far the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had

Hotel Ikon was amazing! We loved how close it was located to shops, various food options and public transport. The staff were amazing and super accommodating, they even let us check in early on short notice. The room was decently sized and very clean, it was also great to have a laundry room and basic kitchen facilities to use during our stay. We will definitely be staying again on our next trip to San Fran!

I chose this hotel for the price, and it has been upgraded since my last stay. The bed was comfortable and the place was clean. The location is safe and walkable. The desk staff folks were especially friendly.

By far the worst hotel I’ve stayed in. Walls painted over again and again, dirty towels, sink ripped from wall and hanging by a thread, crazy amounts of noise and music from long term resident in next room, just to name a few.

Apart from it being conveniently located, everything else was terrible. The room was noisy, you could literally hear all your neighbours at once. The vent whirred loudly every time you entered the washroom. The fan clicked each rotation it made, and there is no AC. The facility was run down, and the elevator was horribly inconvenient to use (and smells). On check out say, the counter staff said we could leave our bags there for the day, but nobody was around during check out!!! We waited an hour and the staff never came back. Top up a little more for another hotel nearby - I would NOT recommend this hotel to anybody.

Overall the room has perfume smell the sheets the pillowcase and I’m allergic to the smells due to my problems with my lungs. Mosquitoes are all inside the room and I got bit by a spider my whole wrist is swollen to these days and there’s bugs flying around inside my hotel so it was a nightmare for me and I will never recommend that hotel to anyone. The way you look at it on the website looks well suited for the price that you’re paying and yet it’s not worth it it’s deceiving pictures on the website.. I stayed there one night I want a refund I exit out before 12 o’clock in the afternoon… I can’t send you The picture of my swollen wrist arm due to spider bite the reason I know it’s a spider bite because it’s warm…

Not being able to control the heat is annoying but ok, not being able to use the elevator to get to the lobby is challenging and annoying but ok, having cockroaches in the room is NOT ok!!! And, when I asked for assistance, the staff said they would make a note. Not acceptable.

The staff was fine and service good but had a rat in my room and before the place was cleaned the next day the hallway smelled infested too. Thankfully got a refund. It did smell like they cleaned the floors on the third floor the next day but was still musty

A bit run down, a bit dirty but even tho it seemed quite disorganized the staff were extremely nice and did all they could. The Netflix and smart TV advertised was a big selling point for me and the room had neither of these :( if your just looking for a cheap place to crash it’s great

Except the location, everything was awful. The room stinks and very tiny. The bed makes noise every time I move around. The key is not the door-lock. Literally they give you a key in 21st century to lock the door. Elevator is also very very outdated. You will know what I am talking about.

+The building is cool and has a lot of character +great location for my trip, close to the Moscone convention center -the elevator is a little bit scary, but this admittedly added to the adventure and character of the hotel and could also be seen as a pro -it’s a bit noisy, they provide earplugs so you can get to sleep, but it would be nice if they would find that chirping smoke alarm and put a new battery in it hahaha! otherwise noise level is about what you would expect in this area of the city. Overall a mostly pleasant and relaxing expected experience, you get what you pay for after all and I was hoping to get an old building with lots of character and I got exactly that!

The staff is friendly and helpful. The room we had has a constant noise like a washing machine was being run. On our first night, the fire alarm rang out and we had to go downstairs and wait for the firefighters. A lady we met the next day mentioned that she was used to that already.

My friend and I stayed here and it was in a great place to walk to other areas. It was affordable as well. Super vintage and a great old building to explore. They also have an old elevator. It was not the fanciest place ever but we had a great time.

The water was hot, water pressure was strong, and I was able to sleep in the bed. I did find the elevator a bit alarming, but I’m able to run up and down 3 flights of stairs, and that was good for me. I LOVED the laundry facilities, and the fact the hotel was half a block from the bus stop that provided early access to the airport was a bonus. I would stay here again if alone, but it’s not a property where I’d bring a girlfriend — it was exactly what I needed as a solo traveler.

Most horrific experience in the middle of the night…..I had phone confirmation to make call to residence manager…. When I arrived midnight I tried every possible way to contact her but she wouldn’t answer!!!! Until 2.30am I was there with no success. Eventually I had to leave in dark night to search out another hotel. Next morning when I call the hotel the receptionist was yelling at me. The hotel looks like a nasty dungeon.

Then only thing I did not appreciate was the male staff at the front desk who was not there for 3pm check in. I even called ahead of time to let them know I’ll be there by 3pm and still waited over half an hour to get any help. I even called all the phone numbers they left for help and it took awhile to receive any assistance.

Don't forget your key! You'll be locked out of the hotel which has decided to save $200 a night by not staffing it afterhours. There's an "emergency number" you can call. Nobody will pick up. Congratulations! You're now stranded in a sketchy San Francisco neighborhood at 2am.

It was comforting to stay at the Ikon after not seeing them in so long. I only stayed one night so it was nice of them to let me slide and only pay 50.00 deposit. There was a little bit of trouble at check-out, she couldn't find the key to re-pay my deposit but finally I got it. The Ikon is different it's not the usual hotel but it's convenient and has a nice laundry room/snack lobby. It;s clean and sometimes cozy. Easy access to downtown and North Beach.

No one was there to check my partner & In. We called to confirm reservation at 9:00pm in which they gave us a heads-up that there will be no one answering the phones after 10pm but there will be a person on-site. We arrived to the hotel at 10:30pm. There was no one at the front seat and it seemed like there was no one working there. Another man who had pre-paid online had been waiting there for a while before we showed up. He said no one has come to help him. Very weird building, it appears that people actually live in that building as it may be an apartment. We ended up leaving & booking a stay at a hotel near by.

I booked the hotel for my daughter's layover in San Francisco en route to her flight home from boarding school. My daughter is 18 and just graduated from high school. The stay in San Francisco is her graduation gift. The hotel was already pre-paid in Expedia using my credit card. When she checked-in, they asked for her debit card and charged the same amount. Hotel Ikon charged twice. The money in her debit card is just enough for her food and transportation to and from the airport during her 3-day stay in San Francisco. So she ended up not having money for that. They initiated the refund but the process will take 3-5 business days. So we had to send her money by Western Union for her food and transportation because the money allotted for that was withheld by Hotel Ikon's negligence. My point is they caused unnecessary stress to a trip which should have been enjoyable. Until now, 8 days later, the money they refunded is still not credited to my daughter's bank account.
