The hotel is praised for its great location, friendly staff, and free pastries, tea, and coffee for breakfast. However, some guests have complained about the noise, thin walls, and lack of air conditioning in the rooms.

Location and room size (good size and clean; plenty of towels) This is the second time I stay at this hotel. Elevator works better and faster. Coffee /tea available 24/7 is nice. I would have given a better score if there is placard for DO NOT DISTURB sign available. I want to help conserve water and reuse towel more than one days but there is no way to do it without the placard. Lamp, TV not working. I need to figure out myself or call for help. (No instruction how to reach front desk and the in-room phone to front desk not working. The worse thing is the voice message from the fire alarm went off at 2:30 AM with flashing, beeping sound and loud VOICE "low battery warning...." I had to use my own phone to call the hotel front desk to get someone to come shut it off. A man came to remove the battery and told me it will be replace tomorrow. It is the worse experience ever.

The closeness to Dragon’s Gate for China Town. You can catch the cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf within a minute walking distance to Powell. It’s also close to Union Square. There’s a parking garage ($35 a day/Can leave 1x per day). Really wasn’t anything I disliked. Friendly staff. Great location. Great daily rate.

As others have said, the hotel is in a great location. It’s a bit run down. Walls are thin, so be prepared to hear your next door and upstairs neighbors. No coffee pots in the room, but they do have pastries, tea, and coffee downstairs. No ice machine, no mini fridge, no way of controlling your heat or cooling.

A hidden gem in the heart of San Francisco. The staff folks are amazing, the rooms are comfortable and the price is extraordinary.

Big windows. Safe for money and documents. There is not very expensive parking nearby. Powerful water stream. Not many loud noises in the street. Free coffee in the lobby. No heater system. It was chilly at night. The lock on the bathroom was broken. Not convenient for several people

The staff was amazing, they let us check in early and the location is great. They provide pastries and coffee for breakfast. Great value. The toilet had some issues and there's no ac.

The location, the friendly staff, the complimentary pastries, coffee, tea during breakfast hours, the use of their microwave in their lobby, and having my request for a fridge granted. There’s nothing to dislike.

We arrived at the hotel at 8:30AM to drop off our luggage. Imagine our surprise when the front desk said they had a room available for us. The location was perfect for our stay with easy access to public transportation. We also walked easily enough to Chinatown, the Powell Street cable car and the Powell Street BART terminal. Pastries were available for breakfast and coffee/tea was available all day. The bed was harder than I'd like. The pillows a little flat (although there were extra pillows I was too tired to get up and get them). The ice machine in the lobby was out of order.

Very old room with door that had no security bolts and felt unsafe as loud noises and yelling in hallways all night. Room was inexpensive for San Francisco as it’s older place . I could not sleep most of the night.
- 3.5/5
The staff were excellent - helpful and friendly. The pastries in the morning and the coffee were fantastic. The location was excellent - close to public transport and lots of things to see and do were close by. The mattress on the bed was quite uncomfortable and the heating was difficult to get going.
- 5/5
Exactly what you need for the price you pay. No luxury, straight business.
- 4/5
We found the Grant Hotel small and quaint. The staff, from reception to the other service workers, were very friendly and helpful. Our room was small but very clean. The amenities are limited. There is no air conditioning so on summer days it could be warm in the rooms. You can open the window for fresh air but be careful as it could be dangerous for children. It is situated in the Union Square area with a short walk (less than 5 minutes) to the Union Square Plaza. We were able to walk to the Chinatown gates within 10 minutes. Lots of shopping and restaurants in the area. There were pastries in the morning (7-10am) and coffee available all day long. The hotel provided discounted parking right across the street from the hotel which made it very convenient especially if you have a lot to carry. You are also allowed a one time in and out privilege which makes it nice if you want to explore the city. I would definitely stay again and recommend this hotel.

Good gor the price. It was affordable for me, and they keep it clean and was freshly painted, which gave it an up to date feeling like somebody actually cares, though I wouldn't say it was renovated. Carpets are old. But clean and safe and convenient and affordable was what I prioritized, and that's what I got. I like the coffee/tea bar setup which is available all the time, and the pastries in the morning were a nice touch. Again, it makes me think someone cares about the experience.

I loved my stay here! The Grant Hotel is an old building, but it’s been well-maintained. My room had everything I needed and the staff was very kind. I felt very comfortable here and would absolutely stay here again! They also provide free tea & coffee 24/7 and they have pastries available for breakfast in the morning (though it appears none of them are vegan). Thank you for a wonderful stay! (Be warned that the hills near the hotel are quite intense!)

It had a great city view and was in the perfect location. The walking was a bit up and downhill but transportation nearby was very accessible otherwise. It was very close to restaurants and Union Square. The service was wonderful and they offered free pastries every morning 7-10am and free coffee, tea, water, and ice 24 hours. Check in and check out were both straightforward. Overall great stay.

The staff were not friendly (not rude just not friendly), and they left bags of towels or linen on the hall way, blocked some access. There’s no security mesh on the window, the window is quite low. Only a wooden bar to stop opening, which looked a bit scary if you travel with kids. Sound proof was terrible! Beds and pillows were terrible! Do not recommend this place

The front desk was very nice and helpful. If you’d like to checkout and leave luggage at the front they will lock it up safely. Parking is the best in the city with the valet being only 35 dollars for 24 hours. I had no issues parking there even with my valuables still in the car. The only complaint I have is that the king sized bed was two twin mattresses put together. Hotel was sufficiently clean. Best deal in San Francisco and would 10/10 recommend for anyone traveling to the city by car. It’s only a few blocks away from Chinatown and Little Italy. We were even able to walk to fisherman’s wharf. Best deal ever!!!

I thought the hotel me and my friend stay at was good. There was a shows playing at the Masonic and was 7 minute walk. So I booked the hotel there. The parking was confusing because we had to check and pay in the front desk. But had to go to the parking lot and back to the hotel to register. But, other than the parking it was good hotel.

Cheap and good location but some negatives. Room is very outdated, no kettle / coffee maker, fridge, or microwave. Only one pillow each on the bed (which wasn't the comfiest). Hot water tap would spout out black flakey bits occasionally which was a bit concerning. Ironing board was completely wonky and hard to use. Corridors are quiet smelly from the old carpet. Staff are great and it's fairly cheap compared to others. It's my second time staying, I wouldn't be against returning but I'd certainly consider other hotels first. Appreciated the 12pm check out time.

We always stay here when attending a concert at The Masonic. We come up from Monterey. It is always what we expect, it is simple and basic, but always clean, and the staff are great. The yummy breakfast (included), doesn't hurt either. The parking right across the street is convenient and the staff there are also great. Then we just take a Uber to the concert. Win, win!

Staffs are friendly and helpful. I really like that they offer all day coffee and tea, and pastries for breakfast. We were also allowed to checked in early as the room was already availbale and there was also an option to leave your things when its not time.to checked in yet and room is not yet available.

Wonderful place in the city. Quiet, clean, comfortable. One of only a handful of hotels in the city who do not require a credit card or cash deposit. The staff is attentive. They have tea coffee 24 hours a day as well as an ice machine that dispenses “hospital” ice you can crunch on in the lobby. Decor is simple, bed comfortable, shower heads spray hard and get you squeaky clean. Everything works as it should in the room. Daily housekeeping service without request. A 12pm checkout time affords you that last luxurious hour many hotels no longer offer. Located at the edge of Nob Hill and just a couple blocks away from Union Square, it’s one of my favorite places to stay in the city as it’s in a cleaner part of the city than many other hotels. But be prepared to walk uphill to get back to the room from many sightseeing areas.

Excellent location in San francisco. Very clean, pastries in the morning, and walkable. Compared to areas around, felt very safe. Stayed here with a group of kids and we didn’t have any problems.

Fantastic breakfast with lots of different types of yummy pastries. We stayed two nights, went to Yosemite for a night, then returned for another night at Grant Hotel. The staff were happy to hold our luggage for us (chained to a post in the reception area) while we were at Yosemite which was very handy, and it was also just a 5 minute walk to our tour bus departure point. The rooms were lovely and location was good.

Safe area a few blocks from Chinatown in one direction and Union Square in another, and just a few buildings away from a cable car stop. We didn’t see any homeless people on this road during our 3 night stay (but we saw many as we approached Union Square, however no one made us feel unsafe.) We asked for quiet rooms and were checked into a room on the side of the building overlooking a wall (which was what we wanted rather than traffic noise). However for light sleepers like me, please note that the walls within the hotel are very thin and we could hear the people above us having conversations till 2am the first two nights of our stay, and a baby crying elsewhere in the building. The rooms are spacious and overall I would recommend.

Reasonably priced option in San Francisco close to Union Square. We had a lovely, friendly helpful staff member on check in who ensured our rooms were adjoining and gave us tips on where to eat out. Another nice staff member allowed us to take extra breakfast as we weren’t sure if breakfast would be out before our early morning tour the next day.

We stopped here for an overnight before our cruise. Nothing fancy but adequate. The room was clean and the bed was good. Had to run the hot water for a bit because it appeared rusty, but it did clear.

The room rate includes pastries at breakfast, which there were plenty of options. There was also coffee, tea and water available 24/7. The rooms were extremely clean, the bedroom was of good standard, the bathroom a little dated and fixtures/fittings (like the soap dispenser) need an overhaul. The staff are great and extremely friendly. We would definitely stay here again.

It’s not the fanciest place in SF but it is clean and safe. The fresh pastries and coffee were excellent. The car park across the street was easy to use and convenient. The staff was kind and helpful. It’s near several excellent restaurants and a little walk to the waterfront.

I had a confirmed reservation - came in early in the morning and the room wasn’t ready. Checked in at 5 pm and they said hotel is full and off loaded me to another hotel few blocks away!!! That’s bad. The staff didn’t even explain why they gave my room away- just as a matter of fact told me to go to another hotel with address on a post it note !!!!

Passable for one night, last minute. Decent for the price, but wouldn't jump to stay there again. Hotel is older and the room was clean but bare bones. Walls are very thin so I was woken up at 3am by another guest yelling on their phone. Front desk person was nice though.

The hotel is in a good location, although the climb up the hill to it is steep. It’s close to cable car stops and within 10 min walk to BART train station on Powell st for trains to/from the airport .Union Square is very close by. The hotel itself is basic but clean, with daily clean towels if needed. There are tea and coffee facilities at reception as well as a microwave, computer and ice/water machine. Staff were friendly and accommodating. It was quiet at night and the bed was very comfy. I would definitely stay again .

A great no frills spot in an excellent location, parking was a good deal/price with the garage accross the street. Best bargain in this part of the city. I walked and rode Muni buses everywhere I wanted to go. But beware the incline getting back up Powel, if it's too much for you grab the Muni or a cable car. Nothing fancy, but super friendly and helpful staff, clean, comfortable and safe. Walk to so many great food and drink options. I will be recommending the Grant for my budget travel friends. If you want a room with a view prepare to pay three times their price, or more. If you plan to explore the city and need a quiet place to sleep - Hotel Grant is your best bet.

So this isn't a super modern chain place like we often stay when traveling, but it's a great option in San Francisco. It is an older place but was very clean and well maintained. My first impression was that it was like something you might find in Europe, and then I discovered that pretty much all of my fellow guests actually were European! The breakfast pastries were fresh daily. There was an ice and water machine in the lobby. The location was very convenient for reaching a lot of the areas we wanted to visit by either foot or public transportation. We absolutely would stay here again if we needed to stay in San Francisco. My only complaint is that there wasn't nearly enough seating for breakfast in the mornings... But the lobby area is small, so there's probably not much help for that.

If you are looking at this hotel, there is only one reason to consider it: the price. It is one of the few budget hotels on the area. It isn't totally awful, but there are things they could do better. My biggest complaint is the bed: it felt sleeping on a sheet of plywood. I stayed in 5 hotels/motels during my trip to California and this was the very worst bed. If the owners could replace the mattresses, this might make for an OK place to stay. I will probably look for a different hotel on my next San Fran visit. It is up a very steep climb a few blocks from Chinatown - but most of San Francisco is quite hilly. I wear earplugs when I sleep. There wasn't street noise, but you can hear noise like people walking about if you are on a lower floor. In the morning they offer pastries, that look like the type sold bulk at many big box retailers. They have one pod coffee machine that guests have to line up at to make individual cups of coffee. I don’t know why they don’t just get a large coffee urn which would make better coffee & be more convenient. The rooms are serviceable and kept clean, with daily housekeeping - but they are pretty beat up. The washroom seemed renovated & was good.

Property was a reasonable price and clean and tidy. We didn't feel unsafe but didn't go out at night. Close to tram stops and an uphill walk from Union Square. Close to China Town. We weren’t quite prepared for the brick wall view and it would have been helpful if staff were more informed or had information available on the cost of the transport cards available and where to get them from. Some include the Bart some don't.

The staff were very nice, the room was large & the bathroom had everything needed for a pleasant stay. Coffee & water were available 24/7 & a selection of pastries were also available in the mornings, all for free. I couldn't have wished for a better 4 night stay.

Had a very comfortable stay at the Grant. Location was excellent and the staff go above and beyond. If I return to San Fran, I would stay here again in a second!

The rooms/hotel are quite outdated but my room was clean and comfortable and the staff were very friendly/helpful. Breakfast was provided but the croissants were not good and there was no milk but I didn't even realise breakfast was included so this didn't affect my stay. I'd definitely stay again - good value for money.

Generally there were two complaints: The carpeting was very badly stained; so much so, I slept on the other side of the bed because it was less stained on that side. The bed was clearly inferior as well.
