Lamplighter Inn & Suites at SDSU

This hotel was easy to find. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable of the area when I asked for a specific type of food location. They immediately suggested a few places down the road breakfast was a bit carbohydrate heavy, but a wonderful variety, and my family and I found what we needed to fuel for the day. The room was clean and the air-conditioning worked great. The only downside was the interior of the hotel seemed out of date.

I booked this room so I can go to a graduation ceremony for my niece and I am glad I did. The property was clean and well maintained. The staff was helpful and even let me check in early. I didn't use the pool but it was clean and well maintained. There was complimentary breakfast available in the morning and coffee/water in the lobby all day long.

Parking right in front of our room. The room smelled awful, we asked for another room and it smelled just as bad. We had to sleep with all the windows open and it was still smelly. Really disappointed. The breakfast was very poor.

The breakfast offerings were paltry, the location wasn't really ideal, the staff availability seems somewhat limited, which is fine, but not for late check ins. I also don't like having rooms face parking, but everything is as shown.

The room was clean and comfortable. There is very little TV selections like Netflix HBO or any premium channels. Your breakfast selections for two days in a row was biscuits and gravy. Learn how to cook eggs or something other than biscuits and gravy.

The grounds and exterior atmosphere was welcoming. Internet was slow. TV channels limited and the channels that worked had a bad signal. AC was exceptionally noisy making it impossible to use at night. Breakfast options were ultra processed foods.

The hotel itself is very nice. Convenient parking, similar to a motel. Rooms are clean and nice. Landscaping is beautiful. Breakfast is plentiful. The cleaning staff is friendly. The receptionist that checked us in was extremely rude. For this, I would never stay here again. When I walked in, nobody was at the counter, but shortly after, she walked in and I said hello with a warm smile. She did not return a smile at all and as she dragged her feet to the desk, she just asked for driver license. After that, she couldn't find my reservation and tried to argue with me that I didn't have a room. I said yes, she said no, I said yes, she said no a few times. Check in took nearly 20+ mins. Then during the checkin, she refused to speak to me anymore but to my other family member who was there. I said again that I made the booking and paid for it. I even showed her the reservation print out but she didn't look at it. It could have expedited the process if she took the time to look at it. I would have expected much more respect. My husband watched the whole thing bothered that the check in lady very rude. She did not wish us a good stay or anything as she gave the keys. She had nothing to say. Then after it was all said and done, as I was leaving to go to the room, she was looking down, smiling and shaking her head non stop. I stopped in my tracks and watched her as she continued to shake her head and scoff. I wanted to snap at her but instead I kept my cool and walked away after watching her for a minute. She never looked up at me. Sadly, a hotel can spend years trying to build a business, only to have an extremely unqualified, unprofessional and very rude staff member tear it all down. I had other choices to stay elsewhere that were much more conveniently located to the heart of San Diegos main attractions (this location is a good 25 mins from all the action) and because of this check in staff member, I instantly regretted my stay.

I really enjoy staying at this property. The rooms and common areas are always clean, and the overall atmosphere is quiet and relaxing. The staff is super friendly and helpful, and the breakfast is good and a nice way to start the day. My only suggestion is that they refill the vending machines more often, as there was no bottled water available on the premises during my stay. Aside from that, this is a great place to stay and I look forward to coming back.

Great place to stay and in the SD State neighborhood which is perfect when moving in or out kids. I was on the 2nd floor with view to the pool. Clean room and pretty quiet which I appreciate it. Staff was friendly and check in and check out was fast.

When I saw that this spot had a 4.7 star rating, I was expecting something really nice. What I found was perfectly fine...but definitely not really nice. It is a Best Western motel - nothing more and nothing less. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. I brought my pillow - for which I was grateful as their pillows were way too firm for me.

Overcharged us for our stay .. I noticed I got charged $50 extra without any explanation through Expedia. I caught it looking through my credit card transactions. We left room clean after one night for daughter’s graduation nearby. Breakfast is basic. Disappointing..

The location was perfect for us. We were close to local stores for everything we needed, and within driving distance of Alliant University, where my son’s tournament was held. The 24-hour laundry room was also very convenient for us. More food options would be appreciated, especially some fresh-cut fruit and scrambled eggs. My kids only ate the cereal and yogurt; they mainly stick to fruit in the morning, and while the apples were perfect, there weren’t quite enough options for them. Overall, though, everything was fine.

The reception staff was unwelcoming, they did not greet us and immediately asked for my credit card and ID. When I mentioned that there was no greeting. The staff member became defensive. After we checked in another guest entered and the greeting was exceptional compared to ours. Unfortunately, that set the precedent for our stay. The room had a musky oder and there were fly’s. The bed was extremely padded and lumpy, not great for our backs. Overall the exterior and pool were lovely. The rest not so much. You get what you pay.

We were visiting our student at SDSU prior to commencement. This is definitely the best and closest place to SDSU I'm aware of. Rooms are generally spacious, up to date, clean, and well furnished. The grounds are quiet, well kept and nicely landscaped. There is a free continental breakfast in the morning. Nothing really. I asked for a late check out that was not granted but could have just been the demand at that time of year.

I didn't like that the office clerk question me about my support dog even though I showed her the dogs support ID, asked me how my dog learned to be support dog. She charged me $100 more in case something went wrong with the room staying there. We travel alot, no one ever charges us. I'm a 78 year old diabetic and need my 9 lb dog with me. Also the radios plugs for our phones did not work. The cleaning ladies were not friendly either.

I was pleasantly surprised at how quiet it was. It's on a relatively busy street and my room was close to the front but I didn't hear any noise at all. The entire property was very clean and well maintained. Very convenient to have breakfast available as well. The room was small but for 1 person it was perfect.

It felt safe and surprisingly quiet for the busy area. Check-in smooth and fast. The beds were extremely comfortable, towels and 4 high quality pillows appeared brand new. The kitchen was ok, needs some upgrades. Would prefer much better quality coffee and coffee maker.

The hotel was clean, but outdated. It worked for us because it was very close to SDSU and we were there to attend a campus tour; however, it is not in the best neighborhood. It is possible to walk to Starbucks, CVS, and Ralph’s, but don’t be surprised if you encounter homeless people or shady characters.

The breakfast was a nice feature to have. They did not have a large selection but having a free quick meal to start the day is nice. The location is great as it is near the university, great food locations, and pretty much whatever you are needing. I did not like the location of the fridge. It was in the little closet in the room and caused the area to get very hot as it was no room to air out. The fridge also smelled a lot like fish.

The room was as clean as an outdated room could be. It was spacious but I wouldnt call the beds super comfortable. The pool was clean, our kids enjoyed that. Check and double check your accessibility needs during booking. I was sure that I had booked accessible accommodation, upon arrival we were given a 2nd floor room to which my husband asked if they had any 1st floor rooms available as I am disabled and we had several large, bulky things to unload. We were told that they would not accommodate that request as all of the rooms were full. I checked the website myself to book another room for the same night and there was availability. Also, breakfast sucked.

Not really as close to Viejas arena as stated. Toilet wasn't working so maintenance had to come. Tv wasn't working so again needed help. Ad said there was a laundry for guest use, but the machines were out of order so could not use. Mostly felt safe but one night had a perso by entrance yelling and frightening. Told staff who said to ignore and just walk by. They seemed to think it was normal. Maybe for San Diego but not us.

The bed was so comfy and clean the best I have ever had in a hotel I slept like a baby. The wifi wasn’t working in the beginning but then after a few tries it worked perfectly. Property was close to a yummy sushi restaurant. Breakfast was blah wished they had more protein options. Rooms could be more updated. I would come back property was close to my destination.

I would not recommend this hotel. It's actually a motel with people living there. Completely falsely representing itself. The walls were paper this and at night the environment was not very inviting. Our toilet kept running all night and the sink dripped nonstop. At check in we could not understand the checking person. We checked out first thing in the morning.

This is a really nice motel. Grounds very clean, flowers are beautiful. Room much much bigger then I thought. Separate bedroom kitchenette living room area. Clean rooms, great helpful availabe staff, nice breakfast room, free parking, pool available, laundry available. Not too far from destinations Zoo and Ocean 20 minute ride. Restuarants available close as located by the college. Walked to sushi restuarant and visited twice good food and value. Thank you, enjoyed the trip and visiting the area.

Wonderful hotel! Friendly staff, great location and nice breakfast bar. We travel a lot and the beds here are by far the most comfortable I’ve slept in. The pool area was amazing, comfortable chairs and lounges. Grounds were beautiful, tropical and well kept. We will be back!

Our room was comfortable and clean. The front desk evening and morning staff were courteous, professional, and helpful. Even though the Lamplighter Inn & Suites is located on a busy street and it was busy with many people staying there, we were surprised at how quiet it was in our room, and it was not difficult to get to even when arriving at night. There are several restaurants within walking distance, and it felt like a fairly safe place. The property offered a complimentary continental breakfast. The zoo is about 18 minutes away making it a good place to stay at again should we decide to go see it next time. I would recommend it for its economical price, central location to various places, cleanliness, and safety.

Our king room was well appointed, inexpensive yet exceptionally clean with a very comfortable bed. Unfortunately, we were in a hurry and did not have the opportunity to try their continental breakfast. We would definitely stay here again.

However, the female staff member who assisted us at check-in was not very friendly. When I asked about the pet area shown on the hotel map, she did not give a clear explanation and just said she didn’t know. Unfortunately, some guests were very noisy both in their rooms and in the parking lot, making it difficult to sleep. Around 2 a.m., it became too loud, so I contacted the front desk, but unfortunately, the hotel did not take any noticeable action to resolve the issue.

This hotel rates a 10! It is about a mile from SDSU, so it’s perfect. Very clean, excellent location for SDSU and very safe. Highly recommend!

This is a lovely little older property that has been very well maintained. The room was very clean and quiet, The courtyard was beautifully landscaped and nicely maintained with potted plants, flowering shrubs, and trees, The pool area was very pleasant and the pool was very clean. Overall a comfortable, pleasant stay at a value price and I would stay here again.

Breakfast lacked many gluten free options. I know not much can be done about noisy occupants but it was a bit overwhelming the amount of guests that were not considerate of others peace and quiet.

I was also thankful to see generous choices for breakfast. I loved having hardboiled eggs as a choice. There was a generous amount of towels, and I liked having the soap and shampoo dispensers rather than the annoying tiny bottles. I think having a helper sign up for those who have disabilities was a compassionate touch. And one of the things asked on intake was if, in an emergency, I would need help from them. These little touches speak so well of this business. I will book here again.

It's convenient to SDSU, the bed was comfy, it was clean and quiet. It's a doors-face-the-outside-world type of motel though. The rooms face the sun most of the day and they (understanably) don't run the AC units in unoccupied rooms, so it took several hours for the poor unit to cool the room down. It meets the minimum requirements for a hotel stay.

The parking lot was very tight. I was awakened by them towing a car around 11:30 pm . There should be assigned spaces.

Everyone was very nice. The rooms, while nothing fancy are clean and well appointed. I liked being able to park right in front of my room. Easy to load and unload my stuff. Close proximity to Viejas Arena as well. I would stay there again.

Love this cute little motel. I’ve stayed here 6 or 7 different times while my son was a student at SDSU. The Lamplighter Inn is consistently immaculate- honestly, the grounds and buildings are so well-maintained. The breakfast is basic but good, the laundry facilities, water dispenser,& vending machines are available 24/7 in a secure room next to the lovely, shaded pool area. Parking is plentiful and free. There are several good restaurants within easy walking distance

I loved the drive up parking right to your hotel room door. The pool was really fun. I like that they had breakfast in the morning and the front staff was really friendly as well. We were there for SDSU orientation. It’s really close to the school otherwise it’s not the most desirable neighborhood, but there is a Starbucks down the street!

We weren’t sure and took a chance based on reviews, being this wasn’t a usual big chain and a bit older. Couldn’t have been more pleased with how it was kept up to the max, from the daily cleaning, to the grounds, super comfy beds and pillows, and helpful friendly desk and breakfast crew. We fell in love with the vibe and the location worked great for all our site seeing. Would totally recommend!

The place was older but well kept up. My only complaint was the pillows but I have the same complaint everywhere I stay. They are too thick and firm so you get a stiff neck from sleeping on an angle. Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful but at check-out, the computer was down so the clerk said they would e-mail my receipt. That hasn't happened.

I had a wonderful stay. The kitchen area with stove, sink, microwave and refrigerator was spotless, as was the rest of the unit. It was quiet at night and I couldn't ask for a better experience.

This place is always my go-to when visiting SDSU. Never had any issues before but this time there was a cockroach climbing down the shower curtain when I was in the shower. Definitely changed how I look at this hotel.

We had a lovely time at the Lamplighter Inn and Suites. We especially enjoyed the heated pool and the size of our room…plus the bed was super comfortable. The A/C and nearby vending machine was great as well! The only things we couldn’t get working were the phone and the Smart TV, as we wanted to watch our show on Netflix. Oh well… not a deal breaker, there were other shows and we had our laptops/tablets/phones/etc. We’ll definitely be back any time we visit our daughter at university! :)

The good thing is closeness to San Diego State. This is a motel but the rate is similar to the hotel room. The building is somewhat remodeled/refreshed however the room I stayed is dark, dated and smelly. The carpets are dirty, furniture is old, the refrigerator is so loud it is hard to sleep. The bed was ok but the linens are warn out and grayish. In wall AC works ok but loud too. The fan in the bathroom is so loud and rattling I was afraid to turn it on worrying it will fall out. I did not used the kitchenette, the dishes were odd and not looking well. The sink was blocked. Breakfast is very basic (bread, bagels, oatmeal and cereal), hard boiled eggs and waffle maker. Hardly any toppings. Items often run out and there wasn't much service to replenish. Front desk personnel feels indifferent to customer service.

This was our first time staying there. The pool was beautiful and the staff worked quickly to get us in our room early. However, there was a bunch of dead bugs on the wall when we got into our room. The maintenance man came and cleaned them up and we agreed to stay in that room since the bugs were dead. However, that night as we were getting ready for bed the room became infested with FLYING ANTS!! They were everywhere - in the bathroom, in our bed, and crawling on my daughter's stuffed animals. They were coming out of the wall (on the inside of the room, not from the outside). We decided that we couldn't stay there and packed up our stuff and went to the front office and told them what the problem was and that we were leaving. The person at the front desk said they would give us a refund, however we never received one, nor did we hear from the manager even though I left my phone number and email address. I even sent the hotel an email and never heard back from them. I reserved the room through Expedia so I contacted them and they called the hotel and they said the hotel told them that they would not be giving a refund because we had already checked in. Even though we didn't stay a single night in their bug infested room!! I would NOT ever suggest staying here!

Rooms are old but clean. On the darker side not as bright as the pictures show. Kitchen very small and has the very minimum of basics more for reheating not actual cooking. Beds were comfy, pillows fluffy, towels plentiful.

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night. We were seeing a concert in town. It was the perfect place for a one night stay. The hotel was really cute and nice looking on the outside. The property was kept up and there were lovely trees and flowers around the property. We didn't use the pool, but the pool and the surrounding area looked really inviting. Our room was spacious and clean. The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet. We appreciated the included breakfast. Yogurt, hard boiled eggs and make your own waffles were a big hit! We would definitely stay at this hotel again, should the opportunity arise.

The service was amazing. I arrived late at night and was met by night manager Mike. I mentioned that I was thirsty and he went out of his way to make sure I got some bottled water. The room was clean and relaxing. I slept well in a quiet room. Just what I needed a long series of flights. And in the morning Mike greeted me with a smile and followed up on the conversation the night before. Breakfast hit the spot and I was ready to take on my long drive home. Highly recommend. Great place to stay.
