Handlery Hotel

The Handlery is evidently an older property due for a facelift and renovation. The pool was nice, though I was looking forward to an actual swim up bar. The rooms are adequate, but could use a bit more deeper cleaning. There was a commotion in our building where we had to deal with noise disturbance by an irate guest. Front desk did say they were handling it.

We’re do I begin, the hotel itself was not bad but the what did it for me was not being told that there was an adult anime convention happening there the whole time I was there! Not when I was booking or at check in. To be honest i probably wouldn’t mind it since we family doesn’t judge but you had people dressed in costume walking around practically naked if not and it wasn’t just the females. We were hanging out by the pool before 10:00 PM and there was people recording what looked professional and girls getting naked, I had my 4 and 8 year old boys with me. My 8 year old went to the bathroom by the lobby and ran out scared because there was an old man in a nun outfit wearing a wig and a choker. I have a long list of events like that. The evenings were the worst!! There was no noise level control. We heard people screaming all night long

My family reserved a total of six rooms for my niece’s graduation weekend, unaware that the hotel was hosting an adult anime-themed event during the same dates. Throughout our stay, the atmosphere was loud, and the constant activity in the hallways made many of us feel uncomfortable and unsafe. On our final night, we even had to contact hotel security because one of our rooms was located directly outside the conference area where the event was being held. Unfortunately, our family was repeatedly exposed to inappropriate behavior and attire. One evening, around 9:45 PM, we entered the pool area intending to spend a few minutes there before closing. Instead, we witnessed a topless woman filming adult content in the hot tub. On another occasion, we observed a couple in costume walking through the lobby, with one individual leading the other on a leash in a highly inappropriate manner while our family was gathered nearby for food and drinks. While we understand this is a public hotel and that various events may be hosted on the property, families should be informed when adult-oriented events are taking place. Had we known about this event in advance, we would have chosen a different hotel for our stay. The lack of transparency regarding the nature of this event resulted in an extremely disappointing experience during what should have been a special family celebration.

Unfortunately I recently became handicapped, and although the staff did set us up in a handicapped room, it had a full size bed which made for a very uncomfortable stay. I checked out early because of this, and was told to just call Expedia to get a refund. The staff failed to say I needed to do that the same day I checked out, so the Handlery in essence took my money. I will not be back.

This is the third time I stayed at this hotel and every single time I am put in the farthest building from the main hotel at the far end of the large parking lot. This makes the it feel more like a motel as there are no amenities out there, the rooms are ok but not that nice and you can hear neighbors through the walls. Also my last visit I asked if I could switch to a handicap room because it turned out I had a cast on my arm and would find it difficult to use the fixed shower head. They didn't even try to accommodate just said it wasn't what I booked and paid for already.

Pamela at front desk is the best, always helpful. Pool warmed to 80 degrees. Has exercise room with weights and machines. Comfy beds. Desk with chair. 15 mns drive or taxi to airport. Happy with this visit.

The bathroom door didn't lock, the iron was broken. There was a lot of traffic in the mornings as far as maintenance guys, trucks, and commotion make sure you don't get an end unit number 226 is probably the worst room there.

Overall, it was a decent and comfortable stay. Since the hotel is located in the hotel zone, it felt safe. The parking fee was also more affordable compared to typical city hotel parking rates. Since the lobby and the guest room buildings were separate, we were able to enjoy a quieter stay.

We had a wonderful stay. Wish we had more time there. It’s a beautiful property with wonderful staff. Everyone was so helpful and kind. I had breakfast at the cafe in the lobby and my waitress Julie was fabulous. We will definitely stay again.

We very much enjoyed our stay. You could tell the hotel is older but it was very clean and had all the amenities that we needed. The pool area was big and spacious and the happy hour rates were very affordable. We will definitely be staying again.

The staff were super helpful and welcoming. I asked for extra towels and I had them in less than 10 minutes. They were also very helpful and knowledgeable when telling me about the hotel. That being said the pictures and rooms are very dated. The carpet is filthy and the windows don’t shut all the way. Beds are doubles so definitely felt small and we only got 2 pillows per bed which is fine. You definitely get what you pay for but this definitely isn’t the nicest hotel.

We loved our stay at this hotel. It had an old school feel with a cool layout, relaxing pool area with a Tiki bar and hot tub. The staff were all super friendly and All made eye contact and genuinely smiled at you. I would definitely stay here again. Oh yeah, and I forgot to add that it was also a supreme value.

FYI that the property doesn't have any electric vehicle charging, so you're SOL if you drive an electric car.

My family and I enjoyed our stay. The room was clean, the staff were friendly. The pool is large and the property has a nice resort feel. There is a pool bar and restaurant with good food and drinks. Self parking is $24 per night. The location is near to many shops and restaurants, and right as you exit the freeway. We will definitely be back soon.

The pictures make it look like it is a hotel but it is set up more like a motel. The room was decently clean. We did not use any of the amenities because they were in the main building and we were in a building further away. I believe there was 4 separate buildings. The rooms did have a refrigerator but do not have microwaves (which it doesn't say they do on the listing we just assumed) if you want to use a microwave you have to go up to the main building which isn't crazy far away but far enough to make you not want to use a microwave. Overall I would stay there again in a pinch but it wouldn't be my first option.

Our room was clean, if a teeny bit outdated in the bathroom. The hair dryer didn’t work and there wasn’t a separate fan in the bathroom, so it did get a little steamy. Beyond that, we didn’t need anything from front desk or housekeeping, and we were impressed at how quiet the property was. We were closer to the parking lot and the freeway, but we didn’t hear anything. The parking lot was clean and well lit, with plenty of space close to our room. I would definitely stay at this property again. It was in a great location and easy to get to everything.

Unfortunately, the hotel offers very limited amenities. We requested a kettle or microwave, eye mask, and ear plugs, but were informed that none of these were available. Parking is also an additional charge. Considering the extra fees, we expected a better level of amenities and overall guest experience.

No elevators. Dismal to carry your bags upstairs. Room was nice but needs more lighting. Quiet even though close to freeway. Convenient to everywhere.

Amenities are pretty good, like the pool/hot tub and poolside bar & grill. Fitness Center is not very good. A couple treadmills and some dumbbells, plus 1 bench. If you need somewhere quick to stay for the night and a little free time, it’s a solid choice. However, if you’re spending extended time in San Diego, there are probably hotels that have better amenities and more updated rooms.

Everything was great besides our king size bed. The bed was so uncomfortable and u just sink into the middle. so for 3 nights the sleep could have been a lot better also bring your own pillow the ones they have give no support. The pool and service pool side was fantastic! I’d definitely stay again just would hope to get a room with a better bed lol . Overall I’d give it 8/10! This would not have typically bothered me, however, I had all of my luggage, I was dressed up and alone. Come to find out, there was a Goth Convention going on at the hotel this weekend. Being a single woman traveling alone, I was uncomfortable, even frightened by what I saw on the way to my room. I chose to stay somewhere else on Saturday night since I wasn’t comfortable. Came back Sunday late morning and stayed at the Handlery Sunday night. I checked out Monday morning. I did not attempt to change my reservation at all because it was my daughter‘s graduation, we didn’t have time, and I didn’t want to make anything of it since I was there to celebrate her! I’m not sure what else I can say but that I won’t be back. The rooms were clean and seemed well equipped with necessities. We were on the second floor which made it very difficult leaving and coming back to the room. If we were aware there wasn’t an elevator, we would have gotten a bottom floor room.

We arrived super early as we got back to port at 8am in Long Beach. We headed to San Diego to spend the day and night. We arrived at the hotel at approximately 1030 in the morning and I asked if it would be possible to check in and if so how early could we check in. The young lady at the counter was so helpful and went ahead and checked us in at that time. I asked her if she had any suggestions on things to do and she pulled out a map of the hotel area and the area around the hotel. Not only did she tell us what and where to go she actually took the time to write on both maps what and where to go and some of the history. Only thing I wish is I could remember her name so I could mention it and thank her again for being so kind and caring.

Very clean room. Lots of friendly helpful staff. The cool air wasn’t working and they had maintenance come right away and fix it. The pool was very large and a great temperature for swimming in early May.

Loved the personal patio! Wish I could turn the light off on it, though so I wouldn't have to use the black out blinds. I had searched for hotels with free parking and breakfast and this came up, but it had neither of those so I was surprised by the added costs. Breakfast is order off of the menu and the parking was $25.

The room itself is older, carpeted, and small full beds. However, the pool is awesome, the hotel felt safe, the maintenance men that was changing propane bottles for the fires by pool were nice. The bar by the pool and restaurant had great food options, and the drinks were good.

Nightly charge for parking needs to be called out clearly in the booking process. No matter how good the property is, if I arrive and it's the first I hear of a parking charge, I will write negatively about the property and will not return.

This hotel is awful. I was supposed to stay for 3 nights. I barely got through one. My room smelled like it had mold. The carpet was cold which made me think it was wet. I got a headache after being in there for a half hour. The stench in the room permeated everything. The sheets. The towels. So gross. I left the next morning. Checked out early. The manager didn’t even try to accommodate me by asking if I wanted to move rooms or offer any kind of help. Just said okay and verified what time I was leaving. Never again.

They did not advertise the $24 a night for parking. As we booked through Expedia, we had one of the most undesirable rooms far rom the office. Will not stay there again.

I booked a premium king bedroom. I was given the worst room in the worst building. I did not have a car, so I booked Uber for my commute. Every time I needed to get into my Uber or receive a package, I had to walk 2 minutes. Not even a single staff member helped me carry my luggage, even though I saw others receiving such treatment. After requesting and changing my room 2 times, I finally got a good one. During this entire time, the hotel did not provide any support to carry my belongings from one room to another. Only after asking did they provide support. There were unnecessary charges for parking vehicles and laundry that were not mentioned anywhere on the website. At the end of my stay, when I went to do the laundry, the machines were not even working. I had to wait 30 minutes and move from one building to another just to finish my laundry. These things are highly unprofessional. Later, I expected some apologies from the hotel manager. I did not even get that. I came to your hotel for a business purpose, but you guys gave me unnecessary headaches throughout my stay. Initially, there was no water in the room. When I called room service to order, there was no response. No one even followed up with me. How will you compensate for these things?

The pool was great with lots of seating and a little bar where you could order snacks and drinks. Breakfast omelette was huge, I’m glad we decided to share it before we saw it! The room seemed clean but had a slight odour of mildew, so updates are definitely needed. They were also great letting us into our room early as it was ready.

Hidden gem. The layout was decent the food choices were good and friendly staff. Very clean but beds weren't very comfortable and a king size bed with two small full size bed pillows doesn't cut it. Parking was another story. The parking was $29 a night and available for public paid parking. Handicap parking was almost non existent and nowhere near the rooms. This place served our needs. I would recommend. It a 2 1/2 star hotel so no frills but very convenient.

Rooms felt old and dingy. The photos tricked us. We paid extra for a room surrounding the pool like they have in the photos but got placed in some other room in a building down from the main office. Floor felt and looked perma dirty. Place could use a good update to match the advertising photos.

The rooms were so small, the bathroom was a joke, it didn’t even have a counter top. The images online versus what reality was completely different. The sheets were horrible felt like sand paper. Bath towels the same. There is no A/C and you can’t open any windows as they have security locks for safety measures due to crime in the area. We would not stay here again.

We brought our dog and they gave us a room that was far away from everyone else which was great because it was very quiet. If you are traveling with your pup to San diego this is a great place to stay.

The only negative is that if you have loud neighbors the walls are a little thin. Luckily it was only one night.

If you check out an hour late (noon) they charge you 30- an hour.

Our room was placed directly by a housekeeping closet. Every morning around 6:30–7:00 AM staff gathered there talking loudly, using phones, and slamming doors, waking us up daily. The walls were also very thin, so we heard loud neighboring guests late at night and a nearby dog left alone howling for long periods. The room had multiple cleanliness issues: mold in the bathroom, bubbling wallpaper from moisture, dusty conditions, and a dirty balcony with cobwebs. We tried using the jacuzzi on day one, but it was extremely foamy and dirty, so we never used it again. We asked to be moved shortly after check-in because of the room location and were told no. Later, an extra pillow delivered to us smelled strongly of body odor and was unusable. We were also denied a hotel-offered amenity after staff asked if we booked through Expedia. Most frustrating, after Expedia contacted the hotel, they denied any refund claiming we never complained. That is false. I raised concerns Thursday within 15 minutes of check-in and again Saturday afternoon. Same front desk employee both times, rude each time, and apparently documented nothing. Dirty, noisy, poorly maintained, and poor customer service.

It’s old and run down

My family enjoyed the stay here over the weekend. We were in town for a basketball tournament and were still able to enjoy the pool which was warm. They also have fire places you can set up at and hang out. Room was very clean and AC stayed blowing cold. I don’t get to enjoy the bar areas but everything looked really nice. I will definitely be booking here again

Hotel room sheets were so rough they felt more like a curtain than a sheet. Incredibly rough and itchy. Flooring was fake wood linoleum bubbling up in places shower was a low budget insert. This was clearly a 65 dollar a night room. I wouldn't recommend anyone stay here unless you like drunks drug addicts and fights outside your room. Avoid the elevator it smells like urine and clearly hasn't been cleaned in a LONG time.

It seems like she hate everyone around, hate her job. I personally felt so much negative motions by her attitude. I travel often, so I surprised why she works at that hotel and takes someone's place.

We were not pleased with our stay. We were required to sign a waiver since we had our dog with us agreeing to a charge of $250 fee if the floor gets soiled from our dog. When we checked into the hotel room, there was a stain on the floor and I made sure to call the front desk so I was not charged. The bathroom towels also had stains and we were placed in a corner room with a fence as our view. The fridge is under the bed nightstand which is an odd place for a fridge. Staff not very friendly.

The young man at the front desk was very polite and helpful! But the hotel its self is a bit outdated. It smells older and looks like it needs to be renovated. For example the carpet is very unappealing that’s all over the stairs, hallways and rooms. The bedroom was clean and so were the sheets and bathroom towels. Everything smelled like it was washed very well. The bathroom is quite small but very clean. I would stay again if the price was this good. It was only $118 a day for the weekend. Which is a steal. It is central to a lot places to visit in San Diego. Like seaworld, the fashion valley mall, lots of restaurants, mission beach and lots more if you take a look at the map around you. The staff was kind and friendly as well when walking through the hallways. So I would recommend this hotel.

Would’ve loved the rooms near the pool with the balcony as it was an amazing view. Although the beds were a little hard, and the long pillow on the beds were kinda dirty but the regular white pillows were fine. The pool was cold although it was advertised to be heated. But! The pool and hot tub were clean and the view around was gorgeous! Other than that I would definitely come back because the staff were very very helpful and the location was great!

The Handlery Hotel stay was great. Rooms were clean and the pool area was open even with the Rain on new year’s 2026. We got food and drinks from their pool area bar at a good price, the food was great. It’s a little outdated and it could use some upgrades or amenities added, but it had the San Diego look. One thing I would say is take out the Daily parking fee that is not added until you check in. Will I go again, yes. Close to old town, La Jolla, little Italy, and Downtown/Balboa Park which we visited and came back if we got wet. Also check out Bronx Pizza nearby. You won’t regret it.

Now for the bad: It rained when I was there, and water leaked through the ceiling of my bathroom. The towel rack inside the bathroom was broken. The hot water level of the showers was far from sufficient, even when turned all the way up. The rooms were missing microwaves. The cable TV was flaky. In general, it was not a comfortable stay. But the biggest turnoff was the parking. No mention was made of paid parking until after reservation. Its $24 per night. I’d have stayed in Gaslamp District or somewhere else in downtown if I had known that. I don’t recommend staying here until they fix the bathrooms and other basic ammenities.

Staff was nice, our room was made each day, the bed was comfortable, and the room was pretty spacious. However I wish our room had a sheer or inner curtain for us to open up and let sunlight in; it was either darkness with the black out curtains or everyone sees into our room. Bathroom was small, water pressure was ok. Maybe this was because we were put in a conjoined room, but the walls were super thin that we could hear people pretty clearly on both sides. We have to use our hotel card to enter the building but it stayed unlocked the entire time. The stay was ok, convenient location with our itinerary

Love the quite it is… clean rooms!

I was only there one night and didn’t check in till 11 PM and left the next morning at 7 PM. Still, the hotel clerk was most friendly and had a genuinely welcoming demeanor. We ended up chatting about things other than the hotel stay.

It’s all very good. Very clean, quiet and friendly staff. My only issue is that I paid additional for an upgraded room with the view, but only ended up with a view of the parking lot. Other than that, I didn’t have any issues.

Pictures do not resemble the hotel. It needs updating. Customer service was lacking, the pool was closed and we were not told until check in, the restaurant is slow and food is okay. For the price go next door.

Staff was not very welcoming. No coffee beyond instant in room. They told me via phone my rooms for my kids were conjoining which upon arrival they were not. When I mentioned the rooms were supposed to be they stated “well this is all I have.” Very dismissive. I understand not always promised however it was very disappointing. Grounds are nice, room was nice. Just customer service seemed to lack.

I had a wonderful experience at this hotel. The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and efficient from the moment I arrived—truly making the stay even better. The room was very clean and well taken care of, which made it easy to relax and feel comfortable. For the price, the overall value was exceptional. Another issue was the ice machine area. Every time I tried to get ice, a group of employees were gathered right in front of it, talking and hanging out. None of them moved or acknowledged me, so I had to squeeze by just to use the machine. It felt unprofessional and inconsiderate. Overall, the experience didn’t meet expectations, and I hope management takes this feedback seriously so future guests don’t run into the same problems.

Large , clean room

The check in took forever , Everything is not able to use. Like pool , gym , restaurant and vending machines don’t work - we get to our room and no extra water. I asked the front desk of they can bring us a couple of water bottles and the said NOOOO. After I told him the vending machines don’t work and we can’t get water. He said to use the bathroom faucet. Not good. Most likely never staying here again.

Staff is kind. I left my trip very early due to a health reason. I was supposed to stay until 12/1/25 but I left 11/30/25 at 130am. I never got a parking invoice although I called to get one. There was some misinformation from one employee to the next. I hope I’m not charged for anything I didn’t use. Hotel was clean and the grounds are nice.

Found this hotel a couple years back when an event I attended was scheduled there, and have stayed there a handful of times since then. You really can't beat the room price, nothing fancy but clean and quiet with a pleasant atmosphere. Nice for a staycation.The only negative is that they started charging $24 per night for parking, which seems like lot.

Amenities weren’t as depicted . The room was no where near what is declined in the photos Just about everything in the room is broken; outlets, towel holders, shower curtain holder, chair. TV is extremely low quality. For the price it was absolutely ridiculous for the type of room we received. We filed multiple noise complaints for our ONE NIGHT stay. We would call the front desk and she would brush it off asking they’ll send someone yet wouldn’t even ask for their room number. They would not send anyone for any of the ones we called the front. Also the staff to check in was very unwelcoming. I would NEVER stay here again or recommend anyone to this hotel EVER.

In addition to the room issues, I was never offered a map of the property and found myself wondering around trying to figure out where everything was. There was no mention of the returant or bar or pool hours in the room which would have been helpful to know.

The hotel is older and somewhat run down. The restaurants and service were great, but the rooms were old and dirty. Long hairs in the bathroom, pee or another yellow looking stain on the back of the door, the door and ceiling were warped from water and the windows barely opened.

This was a quick overnight for my 2 sons and myself. I felt safe and the facility was clean and accommodating. I would say this was an affordable safe placed quick travel stays.

The hotel has rooms spread out which makes the tracing of rooms very difficult. The reception staff was cordial but felt unsafe as a solo traveler. Also the security money has still not been refunded. The hotel doe not offer a complementary breakfast as we saw it was there while booking

The first problem was I had to carry my heavy luggage up the stairs as you did not have a elevator. The view was horrible. There was no reason for me to get a balcony if I knew the view was going to be the parking lot. You had no screen on the balcony door so could not leave open at night as did not want something to just come on in. You had no ventilation fan in the bathroom. and I had to ask for a comforter as that was nowhere to be found. My stay was for originally Mon- Thurs but I left on Tuesday. This set the bad tone for the rest of the trip.

So when I read the reviews, I was kind of nervous because they complained about the same thing!(outdated and smell). The room we stayed at was great and it didn’t smell and it was so great that we stayed an extra day.

The pool area is very nice and we enjoyed it over the weekend. They have followed the practice of small pillows for the bed, so while bed was not uncomfortable per we, the 3 small pillows made sleeping uncomfortable. Bring your own. Restaurant is okay for bar style foods. I would love to see more gluten friendly items.

The hotel was very nice, if a little dated, with a really nice pool area! It felt safe and I slept well here! The air conditioner was quiet which is a bonus in any hotel!

Honestly was so disappointed, the picture on the site were so misleading. When we got into the room it smelted moldy, the bedding felt wet on top and under the covers. The bathroom was so small we got ready in the room. There’s was absolutely no counter space to even put our toiletry bag, and the door barely missed the toilet when closed. The tub had some look like bondo over the crack at the bottom of the tub. We did check out the pool area which was nice, just be careful the pool needed to be resurfaced.

Overall pleasant experience and accommodating. Parking $24 a night is definitely more expensive than other hotels nearby. AC was very weak, we set it at 60 degrees and it definitely didn’t feel like it.

I asked if it would be possible for my room to be in the same building as my sister’s, as we were traveling together with our husbands. Her response was abrupt and unprofessional — she stated, “What, do you want me to get fired?” I was quite taken aback by her comment and chose not to engage further. I accepted the room in a different building and walked away. I was upset by how the situation was handled, but thankfully my husband later spoke with the assistant manager (unfortunately, I did not catch her name), who was very kind and accommodating. She was able to arrange for our rooms to be closer together, and I truly appreciated her professionalism and willingness to help. I hope this feedback is taken constructively, as I believe the initial staff member may benefit from additional training in customer service. First impressions are important, especially in hospitality.

It’s an older property so there are a number of improvements that could be made. I wish the bathroom was a bit more modern and friendly towards those traveling with toddlers

The room, we did not know that there was a charge for parking which was 24 dollars a night. All told we drove close to 4000 Miles o. This vacation and this was the only place we paid for parking. The room was clean but the bed was extremely hard and rest wasn’t easy for either of us. We won’t go back.

Love the unique vibe of this hotel. Amazing landscaping. The pool/hot tub area is fun to chill. They have fire pits and a nice restaurant with access to the pool. Rooms are very clean.

Nice place big swimming pool

When you enter the property you smell that it is the oldest hotel in San Diego. Not only that inside the room it was worse. The patio door did not open without force and once I opened it, I couldn’t close it. I had to call someone up within five minutes for them to fix it they reported the rotor was broke on the door. I then also in the same breath, asked for them to spray the room because it’s too bad for me to be there I left drove an hour and a half to get home just to sleep because it smelled that bad I couldn’t sleep. I did not return until five or six hours later. They have the money they need to renovate correctly. I asked for my money back they wouldn’t do it.

Great service, outdoor pool was absolutely gorgeous, room was roomy and clean. Will stay again.

The pool was very nice. We came back to the room and there was a person just sitting in front of the entry door. Very suspicious. We waited, she left and then when we came back waking to the door she was following us. I closed the door right away after entering building. We called front desk to have security look around.

The young lady that checked us in was arrogant and aloof. She asked a question that I hadn't answered yet, and she looked at me with no patience and said, " My question?" She also irritated the guest in front of us who left muttering to herself. Very poor customer skills.

I wasnt a fan of the rooms, they are old and beds are small... but the pool area is really good and the water is heated so that is a plus. There is a lot of shopping around. Parking was easy all thou it cost 24 dlls.

This was one of the nicest hotels we stayed at for the price. The pool was pretty big, deep, and clean looking although we didnt get a chance to use it. The room was exactly as pictured, and there is a mini fridge in the room. Under one of the side lamps. We would definitely consider staying

It’s a nice hotel for like a weekend stay! Would probably book again!

We came in late and left early. One thing i would suggest is parking fee. We are already paying to stay and to add that big of a parking fee seems excessive.

While the price was ok. I think once you add the parking fees I could have booked a nicer hotel for the additional 50 dollars and truly got two queen size beds rather then Full size. Do your research ladies and gentlemen.

Our room was great, very clean. We came to swim and the pool had several people over-drinking and getting drunk, with glasses in hand, playing with and around children. REALLY inappropriate. We ordered a drink with a double shot and got charged a ridiculous $28 for a shirley temple. On top of paying for parking, which is in itself ridiculous after paying for a hotel, my god I will never stay in this or any hotel that charges for parking in an open air parking lot where there are hundreds of empty spaces.
