Reviews
The hotel is generally well-liked for its spacious and clean rooms, friendly staff, and convenient location. However, some guests have complained about the quality of the restaurant, the lack of parking options, and issues with the elevators and air conditioning.

This place was pretty dirty and the room had broken furniture. Our AC system was also extremely loud and the windows were looking out onto like a generator so we couldnt even open the window curtains to let in more light. Not worth the money.

Our 3rd stay at The Commonwealth and we love it! The rooms are so spacious, clean and comfortable (gotta say, I would love a pillow top bed) - great service, valet, dining...a great place to stay in Richmond.

The Commonwealth is such a gem. The staff is always so friendly. It is in a great location; there are several restaurants within 5, 10, 20 minute walking distance. The hotel is about 1/2 mile from the new Allianz Amphitheater. It was a very easy walk to and from the amphitheater. It also a very easy drive to Carytown or the VMFA; you can also walk to Carytown or the VMFA depending on how much walking you enjoy. We had a king suite, and it was so spacious and comfortable; the bed was comfortable, although the pillows were a bit too soft for me. I wish the windows had an overhang so the sun/brightness would be a bit more contained; there were blackout curtains, but because there was not window overhang, the sun brightened the room. I like everything about this hotel.

They were refusing to give me credit for my 5/27 to 5/28 stay which I hade made an error; I was given a room for 5/26 to 5/27 which was nice and I paid promptly! Please refund my 5/27 to 5/28 promptly.

The gentleman at check-in and check-out was very polite and helpful. The rooms could use some updating electronically -- more charge points for phones, airpods, etc. would be useful. Would not recommend for a business traveler until they update that aspect, but for a vacation traveler, it was find.

Location is superb, right in front of the State Capitol. Also restaurant/breakfast downstairs is really good. Delicious food and great service. Hotel is a renovated historical building, but some parts are not well kept and not very clean (windows have spider webs on the outside and carpets look very dirty in the rooms). Beds and showers are well kept and clean so it was alright.

Breakfast was very good. But there was only one very capable waitress serving both those eating in and carry out orders.

Location The room is dusty, the windows are dirty, one of the mattress is dented, the towels on the rack are dusty, the coffee machine isn’t working, no real cup but paper cup. AC too noisy. If turned off, room became stuffy. Carpet too old, bathroom door can’t lock, bathtub slippery, after one night sleep, I had backache and stuffed throat. Your toilet is also not flushing well, the wash basin doesn’t drain well…. In one note, I don’t see the room has been maintained.

We had a very poor experience at this hotel. Just a one night stay to visit my kids who live in Richmond. The first room had a mechanical issue with an aircon unit in the bedroom that's not pushing good air but making a terrible compressor sound... Couldn't be turned off and so chang d rooms at 4am. The second room, as we entered the room after 4am, had both aircon unit running full blast, very cold. Attempted to adjust thermostat but aircon unit in bedroom would not shut down. Managed to unplug it. Finally, a quiet room that's cold but acceptable. Would not stay here ever again.

The location was supreme for visiting the Capitol and museums. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed staying in a suite and having a little space! Excellent staff and the property is great. Could use a few more amenities.

Love the big suites. Location is great near the capitol and other government buildings and courts. A small, but adequately stocked bar, makes for a good start to the evening.

Super spacious and luxurious. Great neighborhood across from the Capitol. Excellent value though pet fee was quite pricey. Pet fee was quite high. Fitness center was a little depressing.

- 4/5
Great location, friendly staff, and spacious rooms. My stay was only marred by the very noisy family next door -- and the fact that I could hear the kids arguing late at night through the shared wall. Not really the Commonwealth's fault but the one reason I gave 4 rather than 5 stars. (I could also hear the elevator dinging outside my door.)

Amazing room, great location, friendly staff, good breakfast in there resturant! Don't expect a view unless your on the park side.

- 5/5
The room was spacious and the beds comfortable. While the building seems industrial, the look was modern and had a cool vibe. There were some eareas of the room that seemed like it could use an updated paint job. Overall it was a lovely hotel and wonderful experience.

The staff was wonderful. Rooms were spacious and clean. I loved the location of the hotel so close to the things I needed to get to. I enjoyed my walk on the Capital grounds which was literally just across the street.

The rooms were elegant and the staff was very friendly. Shane and Josh went out of their way to ensure we had a comfortable stay. Due to staffing issues, the restaurant was closed.Sunday morning. It did not affect our stay, but had we chosen to have breakfast included, it obviously would have.

- 4/5
The hotel could use a basic "refresh". While my room was a nice size, it was a bit run down and could use an overall upgrade. The staff was great - Shane is wonderful! I was not clear when housekeeping was to come. Towels were changed every day, but my bed was only made 1 out of the 3 days I was there. Good location.
- 3/5
Very strong cigarette smoke smell in hallways, dark rooms, but very nice staff
- 5/5
I loved how big my room was. I wasn't expecting it to be as big as it was, it was like an apartment. I didn't like the parking situation. They say valet only and there was hardly any place for the cars to be parked.
- 3.5/5
Friendly, welcoming staff. Comfortable and clean room. The electric lock on the door did not work. It was fixed once but the second time I wanted to leave the room, the door did not lock. Stayed in the rest of the night and used the interior locks.

I was only there for one night with my husband. Clean, spacious room with a well-appointed and immaculate bathroom. The fridge, microwave, safe and coffee service were tucked away in a cabinet. Very comfy bed and super quiet. We were in town for a show at the National which was in walking distance so we didn’t eat at the restaurant (we didn’t get back in time; it had closed) but the bar was very nice and the bartender can make anything you want! Beautiful, old, historic hotel. Would stay again.
- 1/5
We explained to the front desk person that we were from out of town. He puts us in a room and looked at the back staircase, no view no nothing. I don’t know if it was because the way I was dressed or not. I was insulted I left and went downtown to stay at the Marriott Richmond.
- 4/5
Close to where I needed to be-capital building. Close restaurants as well Small elevators but really didn’t need to wait long…
- 3/5
Charming spot and the valet and front desk team were lovely. However, our room smelled musty and there was no hand soap in the bathroom requiring us to pump body wash from the shower every time we washed our hands
- 2/5
The bathroom floor was dirty w/ black spots on the tile. Towels were not white, but a greyish color probably due to poor wash water. Plumbing fixtures were loose from the wall. No hand soap in the bathroom requested by phone to front desk but never brought. The bedroom TV did not work. Overall, the room looked dingy and needs a complete makeover.

We were really glad to have the chance to visit your hotel again. Room 801 was very nice despite the lack of a view. Valet and front desk staff very pleasant. Only issue was the bathroom door needs fixing. It would not close without being jammed/pushed hard. If we had been there for more than a night we would have requested a repair or room change. Thank you and hope to return soon.

Spacious rooms, very clean, modern bathroom, and unbeatable location. The staff are warm and welcoming. The shower takes an extraordinarily long time to change temperature; I turned the knob up because the water remained cold, then several minutes later the water became scalding hot and once again it took a long time to change temperature after adjusting the knob. Also, the morning front desk staff could be faster at checkout.

It was so spacious! Room was hugeee food was delicious I actually had to order it twice ? this hotel was a 10/100000! I’m definitely coming back!

The hotel was close to the VCU Massey Cancer Center. This is an old run down hotel that was probably a great place 40-50 years ago. Unfortunately, they still bill themselves and price themselves as a cut above when they most certainly are not.

Amenities are another highlight. The property delivers on the basics that actually matter—reliable comfort, solid in-room features, and a generally well-maintained environment that feels clean and upscale. It’s the kind of place where you can show up, unpack, and immediately feel taken care of. Location is where it really shines. It’s extremely walkable, making it easy to get to restaurants, cafes, and downtown attractions without needing to fuss with parking or rideshares. If you like exploring a city on foot, this is an ideal home base. Service is mostly good, with one caveat: it can be slow at times, especially during busier moments. That said, staff are generally responsive once you connect with them, and they’re helpful and professional when you need something. Overall, it’s an enjoyable, comfortable stay in a prime Richmond location—and one I’d be happy to recommend, especially for anyone who values walkability and a higher-comfort hotel experience.

In general The Commonwealth hotel is old and dirty. The toilet in my room got clogged at 8am, I called the front desk and told them, they said they’d take care of it. I get back to my room at 9pm after a long day of work meetings and the toilet was still clogged. Totally unacceptable. I’ll never stay here again.

The room was really nice. I was not impressed with the staff at the hotel. I attempted to check in at 5 o’clock for my room and I was told that my room would not be ready until much later. Check-in is after 3:30 so I’m unsure as to why the room was not ready. The only thing they could offer me to take off of my bill was breakfast and I was there for a tournament so there was no way I could actually eat the breakfast. The manager was really nice, but I just didn’t feel like there was any reason why our room shouldn’t be ready that late in the day.

The rooms were fine, very spacious, the staff provided good service, but the food at the restaurant was terrible. Complained twice, but no response from management.

There were however a number of things that were disappointing. The first night our shower did not drain properly, so we were given a different room. In that room the toilet consistently had trouble flushing, the safe would not work/turn on, and eventually that shower also would not drain either. The hotel ran out of Keurig regular coffee (we were restocked with decaf options), and simultaneously we were told the drip coffee maker was not working in the restaurant. We had to buy coffee at a nearby convenience store. When we went to use the lobby bathrooms, we found they also had the unfortunate flushing problems. And whenever we entered the lobby we were not greeted by the staff at the front desk although we were frequently the only ones around.

The room was clean and nice. The hotel staff was great. However, I would not recommend you use valet parking. I had an issue when it came to retrieve my car. They had a hard time starting it, because the wheel was locked. Instead of turning it off completely to let me know, they left the car in accessory mode basically causing my battery to drain. I just went and started it myself after a few tries and it struggled because the battery was draining. The valet staff need better training and learn better car care.

The water in the shower and lavatory was only warm. Several lightbulbs in the bedroom and bathroom were burned out. The toilet runs until the top of the tank is removed and the mechanism jiggled. I told the person at the front desk, but they were not fixed. Overall, I enjoyed the hotel and would stay again, but these issues were annoying -- especially lack of a hot shower.

Unique property in the heart of Richmond. The building is dated. The elevators barely fit me and my two teens in it. The suite was nice. I had spots on my comforter and the other bed had what looked like a washed receipt all bunched up on it. The staff was nice and accommodating.

The floors of the lobby and our floor (4th) were discussing. Dirt marks everywhere. As per the bedroom, out of a half empty hotel, the receptionist had no better room but to place us facing inward directly to the cooling tower and the main plumbing. Having the most important landmark right in front of the hotel, feels insulting that we were given this room. At last the staff behaved and acted as if they were at home. Hanging in the lobby on their phones and not paying attention to serving the guest. Really and overall disappointment.

The room and hotel was clean and the bed, super comfortable. Didn’t love that the “window” was 1 foot from a brick wall so no daylight or view. And the gym was pretty minimal. All fine.

Didn’t have breakfast there. But had 2 drinks and 2 desserts at their restaurant and paid $60, it’s a little bit pricey for just that. Also, there is a stain in the mattress cover so i think they don’t inspect that and wash it often.

Arrived on a Monday night around 8pm. Hotel lobby was empty, staff sitting on couch. I was greeted and swiftly guided to a room. When I went to the room the door was already open. I went down to request another room for safety reason and he was able to just move me to another room on the same floor. Room was bigger but was dirty. Hair in tub on sink and walls. Trash on floor. Sticky table. Because of the extensive travel I did and the request to love once I just stayed. Used the blankets from the closet and went to sleep. Heating/Air was loud but bed was comfortable so sleep it was. But I won’t be returning to this hotel despite to accommodating staff.

This place is in DESPERATE need of a refurbishment. The window was fogged and dry rotted from the AC unit. The room smelt weird and was dark and frankly depressing. The window looked directly into another building (and we weren’t on a low floor). The elevator was laughably small. I’ve honestly never seen elevators that small even in NYC. The area around the hotel felt very sketchy and unsafe and the night staff weren’t confidence inspiring either. The park across the street was nice but idk maybe Richmond in general is a pass unless you’re there for work.

This is a hotel with character. Gracious building. The staff were friendly, the room was super spacious and very comfortable. Convenient to walk to historic sites, canal walk and fun restaurants. I only had a few minor issues with the bathroom lacking a hair dryer and bath mat (got the hair dryer after two requests) and a smoke detector that needed a new battery.

- 5/5
Room ok, I like a room with a view next time please
- 5/5
I stay here relatively often if I have to work late, and the staff has always been amazing, and the location is super convenient. I just wish the hotel offered its own booking/loyalty program so I could book directly with them for a comparable rate. High point is how comfortable the bed is -- feels like some kind of feather topper.
- 3/5
The manager did comp us 1 night and the 2 valet days but still it was a nuisance
- 4/5
We loved our stay at the Commonwealth Hotel! We were pleasantly surprised with an upgrade to a suite, which was spacious, comfortable, and spotless. The staff were friendly and accommodating throughout our visit. The location was perfect—close to the Carpenter Center and surrounded by excellent restaurants. Overall, a wonderful experience that made our trip even better. Highly recommend!
- 5/5

- 4/5

- 5/5
Always an amazing experience
- 4/5
everything was O.K. with exception of the windows which were, to be kind, atrocies. Cobwebs and dead insects had not been cleaned off the windows. It looked like they had not been cleaned for years.

Great
- 4/5
The Commonwealth fit our needs. We only stayed one night. The bed was very comfortable and our room was quiet. The location was great!
- 5/5
Amazing facility and staff. Tucked away perfectly in the city but still close to a lot. Very comfortable abd spacious rooms.
- 4/5
Amazing staff, room was clean upon arrival, only problem is I expected to have valet included everything else was amazing!
- 4/5
From desk to server, with valets amazing except one which is extremely high!! Servers went out of way after exhausting day! I wish I got everyone’s names. I wake up during night, then go outside , I felt safe with the valet staff! Bummed that we were told 2 Queen beds several times and website, yet they are only doubles.
- 5/5
This is my favorite place to stay in Richmond.
- 5/5
Yed, very
- 5/5
The room was beautiful and very clean. All staff have been so helpful & accommodating. Would definitely stay here again. The only con is the parking. You have to valet because the lot is so tiny.
- 5/5
We had a wonderful stay at The Commonwealth! Our Queen Suite was very clean and the staff was very accommodating! The location is very convenient to many great restaurants in downtown Richmond. I will definitely stay here again on a future visit.
- 5/5
Check in was seamless ! Valet was good.

The bartender was also very friendly! Room was nice and spacious.
- 5/5
Was a very nice hotel
- 4/5
For the most this place was great, the valet was friendly helpful and welcoming. Some of the front desk were too. The room large and modern and had a safe and valet. Sadly for the one day I was there, my room was not made and the towels not replaced. As Id been out all day I only found out after a night on the town. I discussed this with front desk on checkout and they were respectful re the situation and mentioned to followup on this. Im happy to give it the benefit that it was an oversight as the front desk were very apologetic and surprised. Overall this was a blip on a great place that tbh I would come back to next time Im in Richmond.
- 4/5
Very comfy beds. Friendly staff. Walkable. Found street parking since it was a Saturday/Sunday stay. Bathroom light low; wished I brought a make up mirror. Would stay again. Liked that there was a fridge
- 3/5
The suite was very large but sparsely appointed and had only two small windows. Bathroom again was huge but no tub, very minimally appointed. There was a coffee maker but no coffee cups. I tried to get a quick coffee to go downstairs at the bar, and the lady behind the counter told me she was busy and if I was in a hurry I could walk down the street and find a cafe. There does not appear to be room service or the other sorts of amenities that one would expect in a business hotel.
- 4/5
Overall stay was good, bed wasn't that comfortable. I would stay again. Lived the separate sitting room from the bedroom.
- 5/5
Awesome value!
- 5/5
Our experience at The Commonwealth was top notch from the moment we pulled up to the valet parking area. We were immediately greeted by Eric, who asked direct questions to establish what we would need. Eric would prove to be the absolute best resource that any hotel guest could ever have. He cared for not only our vehicle, but made sure we had all the information we needed to make the most of our visit to Richmond. Every time we saw him over the course of our stay, he was asking how he could help. He was a great ambassador for the Commonwealth and for the city itself. I didn’t get the name of the young man who checked us in, but he was equally friendly, efficient and welcoming. The hotel itself is gorgeous with tons of historical charm. I prefer to avoid “cookie cutter” hotels and the Commonwealth is in a league of its own. We enjoyed the custom murals throughout and the paintings featured on the room doors had such a whimsical feel. We were tired from driving, so we chose to eat at the Rueger’s restaurant adjacent to the lobby. The food was good and our server, Maria, was engaging and made some delicious cocktails featuring local moonshine from Belle Isle Distillery. We enjoyed talking to her while having our dinner both nights of our stay. Our suite was not large, but it overflowed with style and character. Everything was in good working order and we were able to relax. The linens were clean and comfortable. The bed was firm and we had no problems drifting off to sleep.
- 5/5
The hotel is super convenient, reasonably priced for the location, but the staff is what really helps it shine. The gentleman who appeared to be the night manager/supervising the front desk (Al) in particular was an absolute model of great hospitality -- I tend to run late, but he not only remembered me from a previous stay and knew not to cancel it but was also so nice it allayed any guilt I had. And while the room was gorgeous, the bed (maybe with a featherbed topper?) is my favorite part -- it's up there with like the Westin heavenly bed in terms of a top notch sleep experience.
- 3/5
The property was clean and conveniently located. Staff was courteous and prompt. Hotel wifi did not operate as advertised and the breakfast was disappointing as numerous items on the menu were unavailable
- 5/5
Good location in the heart of downtown, literally steps from the state capitol. The suite was clean and spacious and had nice decor.
- 5/5
Loved it. Bellmen rock!
- 4/5
The room was lovely and quiet.
- 5/5
The room was lovely with a separate sitting area, giving all room to spread out. Will definitely be back!
- 3/5
Not a good stay. The facilities are old and the staff, while pleasant, is not attentive. Our room was not cleaned despite leaving in time, and when we returned, we were given some towels. No offer to clean.
- 5/5
The front desk staff was nice! The only downside was that we had no room service during our stay but other than that I would still book again and if we had the same staff outside that helped bring our bags in and give us more amazing recommendations I’ll be super happy.
- 5/5
Such a cool hotel
- 5/5
Very friendly staff. Eric the valet was always courteous and polite. Bartender was lovely.
- 5/5
We enjoyed the morning waitress at the cafe, she was very friendly, and the front desk guys were great, but our favorite was the woman working the night and early morning shift valley parking . She was amazing! Thank you all.
- 5/5
Excellent service
- 3/5
Difficult to get parking. Suite style nice but a bit too much living space vs bedroom space. AC loud
- 5/5
모든 직원들이 친절했습니다
- 5/5
We didn’t need the internet but the room and staff were exceptional.
- 5/5
Staff were super friendly and accommodated my unusual schedule. Even though the room was right next to the elevator, it was quiet and dark. WiFi was good.
- 2/5
Room was not serviced. Requested fresh towels, failed to get them twice. Had to go to front desk to get them on fourth night. Shower door opened on
- 4/5
The room was nice, and the bed was comfortable. The shower was a bit disappointing as the door would not stay closed and dripping water after shutting it off. It was luxurious, but it had some wear and tear in various spots. Room was super dark with neighboring building right up against the window. The staff was wonderful and very helpful.
- 5/5
This was a very nice hotel. We loved the fact that there was a restaurant located within the hotel and beautiful views of Richmond.
- 5/5
Nicely situated near the Capitol where the tour is excellent.
- 4/5
I was assigned a free upgrade to a large suite on the 8th floor-- there was no view but the room was huge and the work desk was also large and very functional. The King bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean and very functional
- 2/5
Not worth the price. Some areas dated and a little weird.
- 5/5
Staff are super nice and mind their business
- 3/5
Room was good but it had a generator next to the window in the 10th floor and was noisy. Towels smalls and they did no change it for fresh towels
- 5/5
Great job!
- 5/5
suite with 2 full rooms speared by a door - more space for family. Staff is flexible and authentic. location in town is a bit gritty in a way, but also next to state capital. we have stayed many times - consistent ecperience
- 5/5
suites for families, spreading out. Responsive to requests, eg i double booked by mistake and front desk worked with Expedia to cancel one of the rooms with no charge. we like location next to state capital and downtown.. but if a gritty area, but that’s fun
- 4/5
comfy be, friendly staff
- 5/5
Staff was amazing and the room was way bigger than we thought it would be!
- 4/5
The Commonwealth has an unbeatable location in downtown Richmond — you can walk to the Capitol, great restaurants, and plenty of sights. Check-in was smooth and staff were friendly, but outside of that they often seemed disengaged, spending time on their phones instead of checking on guests. Rooms are clean and comfortable, and the hotel itself has plenty of character. With more consistent attentiveness, it would be an excellent stay.
- 2/5
There was hair in the bed and the AC ran really loud. I had to turn it off in order to sleep. Onsite restaurant did not have things on the limited menu. I checked out a day early but was told I could not get a refund because I prepaid.
- 3/5
We tried to eat in the restaurant but the menu was terrible and the place was deserted, so we went out instead. Parking is valet only, but very convenient. And the hotel is ideally located if you want to visit Richmond - you can see the Capitol from the front door and it's an easy walk down to the river to explore the other sights.
- 3/5
Check in easy and fast, 75 dollar deposit bit steep and hotel looking a bit worn. My room had terrible view and noisy all night due to machinery outside window, sink supporting leg missing, plug half out of air conditioner, shower floor very slippy when wet see pictures. Bit expensive to be honest for what I got. Front of staff exceptional and booked me an Uber using their own account as my English phone didn't work and I had no car. Thank you so much for that.
- 5/5
Very helpful staff, convenient location and very nice rooms.
- 5/5
Huge bathroom. Great for myself and two daughters traveling to see colleges.
- 5/5
The hotel staff were super accommodating and friendly. I was very appreciative of the valet parking as it was raining quite heavy. The beds were super comfortable so that I had the best sleep possible. The food in the dining room was excellent. I will be hoing back!
- 5/5
The suite was so very spacious and comfortable. The bed was VERY comfortable. There is a lot of street parking in the area on the weekend. The check in clerk (Trinity) was very friendly as was the doorman. It is nice to see the beautiful park/grounds of the State House upon exiting the building.
- 4/5
Everything was great, except for the battery was dead on the thermostat. It made it hard to.
- 5/5
Fyi for dog owners- area advertised for dog walking at the capitol closes at night
- 5/5
This place was exactly what we needed! Spacious and super comfy. Staff was amazing! 10 out of 10, would stay again!!
- 2/5
Expedia deserves a ONE-STAR rating for intentionally or unintentionally misleading its customers. Such a shame...
- 4/5
My room was very nice except for the fact that someone left the refrigerator at the maximum temperature. I was disappointed with the restaurant being out of so many items that were on the menu.
- 5/5
Great location. Spacious rooms that are all more like suites with a separate bedroom from living room. Well worth the money. Staff went above and beyond. Mr. Al at the front desk is a real gem.
- 5/5
We were centrally located. We could walk to everything. Loved the spacious room.
- 3/5
Overall it was fine. Based on the previous reviews I was expecting more. The food in the restaurant was terrible. Staff was friendly and welcoming. The rooms itself were ok. Clean so that’s really all that matters but for the price I was maybe expecting more.
- 1/5
Anyone with sensitivity to mold - do not stay here. There were tons of very large spores that appeared to be mold growth on all of the windows. Even if it wasn’t harmful, it is very uncomfortable to stay in a room with that appearance. It looked disgusting. Also the shower floors are made out of a plastic material and are porous They have become dingy and dirty looking. The once white towels have been reused so much they look gray. The guy who checked us in was very polite and attentive. The guy at the desk in the morning, just stared at us and didn’t even say good morning after we spoke to him first. If you choose to stay here, please be safe.
- 5/5
Hotel was very nice, clean, staff was very helpful. The cost of the hotel was reasonable but not having any type of complimentary breakfast was disappointing.
- 5/5
Just what I needed!! I will be back!!👍
- 5/5
This property is in the downtown area of Richmond which is still up and coming. Fortunately there is a restaurant on site because there are very few dining options nearby.
- 4/5
The staff was wonderful. The dead bolt didn't work on our room, one light in the bathroom flickered so we removed it for safety, and unfortunately we weren't able to use the dining area one of the nights we stayed. Otherwise, we really enjoyed our stay. We would stay there again if we needed to in the future.
- 5/5
Clean, spacious room.
- 5/5
Close to Allianz
- 4/5
Decent stay
- 5/5
Beautiful suite! Received an upgrade based on Expedia status. Great location if you plan on going to the Capitol!
- 5/5
Our stay was so fun!
- 5/5
First time guest and hotel and staff were great. Room was fantastic
- 5/5
The area nearby is under perpetual renovation any it’s a downtown area. Most restaurants are closed on Mondays.
- 5/5
Amazing modern hotel in amazing historic downtown Richmond!
- 4/5
It was a quick overnight on way south. Only complaint was the sheets were a bit scratchy, and the towels could be softer/plusher.
- 5/5
Water didn’t get quite hot enough but other than a quick shower it was great - room 605
- 5/5
I wish the restaurant opened at 3 when you are checking in.
- 5/5
One of the nicest places we have stayed. The hotel was amazing, but the staff really made this place special. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. We travelled from WV, and my family from Gettysburg, PA to go to the Richmond NASCAR race together. From the moment we arrived to departure, the staff treated us like they were part of our family. The rooms were spotless and the beds were amazing!!
- 3/5
The door to our room did not lock. We reported this in the morning and were assured it would be fixed right away. When we can back, the maintenance guy had marked it as fixed but the lock still didn’t work. He was gone for the day so we spent two night in a hotel without a working lock and nobody seems particularly concerned about it. Valet staff was great, super helpful and friendly. Location is good for downtown but not close to the main shopping and dining areas.
- 5/5
The room was spacious and provided all I needed l, especially for the kitchen area and bedroom. I enjoyed my stay.
- 5/5
Near VA state house. Nice Urban setting. Walkable with easy access to transportation. Bus is FREE!
- 5/5
Our room was roomy and clean and all of the staff we met were very nice and helpful.
- 5/5
Great location and friendly staff.
- 2/5
Room was not ready at check-in. Needed to wait over 90 minutes!!!!
- 3/5
When I was coming through the door to check in, I had 2 large suitcases as this was the first of many stops. There were 3 men behind the counter and no hotel guests...they all watched me struggle to get through the door... My friend another woman, had to help me get in the door. Terrible customer service. The bar area had an odd smell... I realize the building is old, but it was almost unbearable.
- 5/5
Excellent stay, prime location, great restaurant downstairs, friendly and helpful staff from the valet to the front desk to cleaning team. Very pleasant experience and will return!
- 4/5
This is a lovely old hotel in a great location. Staff was very helpful and professional. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel, and both meals were very good. Front desk staff were exceptionally helpful. Only complaint was that our in-room AC was so loud that we had to turn it off to sleep. We mentioned it to the desk staff at checkout. Overall, we had a good experience here.

Great stay first room toilet kept running and they upgraded me right away everyone was so nice and definitely will stay again

Nice hotel with very large rooms. Comfy beds. The elevators are a little slow and antiquated. Good central location in Richmond but you need to walk a few blocks for bars and restaurants. Great access to historic sites and state capitol.

A great place to stay. Extremely helpful staff. Car valets were very friendly.

From the day I arrived to the time I left, the entire staff was very friendly and welcoming. The breakfast certainly exceeded expectation and was much better than some of the local restaurants in downtown. My disappointment came with overall look and feel of the hotel. I was expecting a five star experience and the current state of the hotel did not deliver. The dark hallways, dirty bathroom and torn bedding was not what I expected.

The Commonwealth manages to capture a classic yet modernized feel. Desk staff and valets were friendly and helpful. Rooms and common areas were clean, room was fairly spacious, area was quiet. Parking was $37/night, which is expensive, but not out of line with other hotels. Good stay overall, served our needs. Recommended if you need to stay downtown.

Great stay. Great location. Clean hotel and friendly staff.

The room itself (Carpenter suite) was very pretty, but lack of attention to details was apparent. Repairs were obvious and carelessly done (paint touch-ups, tile repair in shower, etc.) The bathroom door would not close… and three adults were sharing a room. The dresser drawers also would not remain closed (they were open upon arrival). The toilet ran every time it was flushed, but jiggling the handle solved the issue. The beds were super comfy! The valet was incredibly kind and gave us tips for the area.

We had a great stay. Everyone was helpful and very friendly. I wish I had names, but we checked in the and the young gentleman grabbed us a cart and went to our car and helped us with the luggage. He also brought everything to our room. I think he also was the valet at that time. The night time valet was super great!!! The hotel is very nice and we had a great stay.

For my this being my first time in Richmond ( I’m from Norfolk ) The commonwealth hotel is very unique. The different pieces of art , the doors, the restaurant it’s all amazing. I think if I ever need a retreat again locally … I’ll definitely come there again as long as I have the same room.

Came in just to sleep for the night after driving for 15 hours the front desk lady was nice. In the am I walked into the bar area and the lady working looked at me like I was homeless and immediately asked if was going to eat.

Love the aesthetics of this place. Feels like a historical property as it is. Elevators can barely fit three people but you can only do so much working within the restrictions of a historical site. Staff was top notch. Cozy room, clean and comfy accommodations at a decent price. Would stay again if I go back to Richmond.

Staff was exceptional. Really made the experience

Great stay. Valet parking is worth the cost and Eric was fantastic (valet). Would definitely stay here again. Highly recommend.

Shane was amazing, as was the valet whose name I sadly have forgotten.

Booked this room for one night to attend a concert at Allianz Amphitheater. Within walking distance of venue, parking is pricey ($37/valet), checked in at 4pm, room was just finishing up even though check in says 3pm. Elevators are super tiny but overall hotel was clean and updated with friendly staff.

Hotel lobby is not exactly what you see in the pictures, it’s very small, the elevators can only fit two individuals or one person with two pieces of luggage, we stayed in Room 502, lot of space but not maintained, beds are fine the bathroom is okay, shower curtain and tub, hotel good for one night not recommended for extended stay.

The shower was clogging so we were unable to shower. We attempted to get help or money back and we were told sorry and no refunds.

The building has a lot of character both inside and outside. The suite we stayed in was large and was decorated in an eclectic style.

The doorman, Eric, was absolutely wonderful, friendly, and helpful. Great restaurants nearby. Excellent service.

The service at the restaurant is a joke. Delivered my main meal at the same time as my salad and then waited 10 minutes for my cocktail. Never again.
