There is no way to control the air conditioning but my room was very comfortable when the temps outside were around 105°. Sheets and towels were very clean. The bathroom was nice, clean, and bright. The furniture is dated but some would consider them classic and it definitely fits the aesthetics of the building. Replacing the chairs should be considered since it didn’t feel like both in my room would be sturdy. There is no parking so you will have to pay for parking in a garage nearby or drive at least a 0.5 mile away for free street parking. Considering the area, make sure not to leave anything valuable within view inside your vehicle.

The hotel is a little run down, but they try their best to keep it clean given the age of the building. The room was smaller than usual, but expected

No parking, you have to park in a separate parking garage and the small walk there felt completely unsafe. The pain was chipping off the walls in our room and there was a smell of sewage that permeated the entire hotel. Not a safe area of Phoenix as there were people smoking drugs and screaming in the alley next to the hotel. The room was small. I feel like we paid too much to stay here given the condition of the place! The only redeeming quality was that the staff were kind to us at check-in and check-out.

The bed is absolutely rock hard. And the headboard is against a mirror so if you move in the slightest it bangs against the mirror. The bathroom is extremely small. I felt like I was showering in a motorhome. You cannot adjust the AC, there is a ceiling fan. We could hear the person in the room next to us talking very clearly.

Light from hallway illuminates entire room from open air vent above door. No way to block light out. Side walks outside hotel …drug deals going on. Parking garage closest to hotel ..homeless sleeping in doorways. Stickey urine in all stairwells.

Charming. Historical. Interesting - like each floor was a museum and a window to Phoenix’s past! This hotel is 98 years old and very boutique. I actually invited family and friends downtown to come see how cool it was. Not just a hotel, an experience! Side note: the staff were super helpful when it came to checking in, and keeping my luggage after hours. PS delicious pop up bar/pizzeria in the lobby. We had a fun time for Phoenix Fan Fusion - super easy walk from the hotel to the convention center, light rail, Dbacks baseball, it was all right there. Cornish Pasty across the street was amazing!

The room was ok however a previous guest wrapped the smoke detector in plastic. I can only speculate as to why. The soda machine needed to be refilled but that’s fair considering it was Fan Fusion weekend. The beds were comfortable, room was cool and it was a great experience for an old hotel. The staff was awesome and I do highly recommend staying here for the downtown Phoenix experience!!

The hotel is in need of refurbishment, it looked shabby and rundown. Make sure you don’t have a room near the lift - it kept me awake. The room itself was spacious and clean but again needs refurbishment. The location is great for downtown. The hotel has a lot of history

Staff was very helpful. No parking on site and I should've read that in the description so that was my fault. Beds were not very comfortable, bathroom was not much bigger than an airplane bathroom with a shower and you can't adjust temperature in the room but cute old fashion charm of a place built in 1928. We only stayed one night so it was okay but I probably wouldn't stay more than one.

Our first time there and we had the worst room. Loud AC and tiny. Upgraded to another room, but not much bigger. Nice sheets, matress lopsided. Wife wanted to use the pool, but it has been in "renovation" for three years. C'mon, it is abandoned. We looked at it. The antiquity of the hotel is cute and felt like I was in the 30's. Many movie stars stayed here, so if you book one of those rooms it might be worth it.

This is a very old hotel and it is on the historical list. The furniture in the room was worn off, the desk chair had the fabric wearing away, and the Internet was awful. No matter what time of day or night you tried to log on, you may not get on or it was very slow. Also, the Internet would try to log you into the hotel down the street. There is no pool, no breakfast room, and when I asked the clerk if there was a Catholic Church nearby, they said they didn't know. This hotel needs an update as much as they can being a historic hotel. I certainly will not stay there again.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The location was within easy walking distance to many things in central Phoenix. Negative Things: The AC at this hotel did not keep up when the outside temperature was above 100F. The exit of HVAC for the room is a vent above the door into the hall. So, when another guest used a cell phone in the hall at midnight (maybe to not disturb someone in their own room), everyone on the floor could hear it.

Great for staying downtown Phoenix to attend a Suns game. The room was very clean. They have these weird vents above the doorway in the hotels rooms that dont offer a lot of sound privacy. Although small, the room was clean and comfortable. Parking was a little inconvenient but not terrible. I would have rather have not had to pay, but $15.00 for overnight parking is not too bad either. The entire facility still has a really cool 1920's feel to it. I wonder if anyone has had any "paranormal" experiences? The cool little restaurant and bar in the lobby is pretty awesome. It is also within a very short walk to a few other bars and restaurants. We will definitely be stating there again!

NOT AS ADVERTISED. I love a good vintage boutique hotel, but this one needs some TLC. Pool closed, no restaurant, no bar. Not only are all these spaces very very shut down you aren't even allowed to enjoy the vintage space, use the tables, or sit outside at the tables/chairs - it's all locked up. Carpet in the entryway is very stained. front desk staff were not rude but weren't friendly either, giving you the impression that they are used to dealing with a questionable crowd. The room I got was very very tiny. I expected it to be dated but the furniture was mismatched and crammed in. I could barely fit into the bathroom and I am just under 5'2". The view was another roof and side of a building, both very ugly, and so many windows looked straight into my room that I kept the curtains closed anyway. Wifi was very slow. I checked out the next morning. If I was on a very very tight budget I would've stayed here when I was younger, but not at all as advertised which was a deal breaker for me.

The Hotel San Carlos is like a museum. It has an old timey feel to the place. Yet it is well maintained. I thought the Hotel oozed character. There was no refrigerator, and the air conditioner was on the whole time, that I had no control over. Sometimes it actually was too cold. The internet was sketchy. There was a sign on the elevator Informing guest that there were issues with the internet, particularly on the upper floors. So, you might want to try to get a room on the lower floors. I was on the top floor which was the seventh floor. But I loved the place. For the price it was a great deal. Also, the Hotel San Carlos has suites like the Cary Grant and the Mae West and Marilyn Monroe which are not available from Expedia and Hotels .com etc. etc. Those suites have to be booked directly thru the Hotel San Carlos. I had the opportunity to see The Marilyn Monroe Suite. It was really nice. Many actors stayed at the San Carlos back in that era.

Our room was dirty. There was a crusty spot on the floor, stains on the bed as well as a lot of hair stuck to the sheets and pillows. The ceiling fan had so much dust on the blades that it was actually formed on both sides. The shower water kept going from warm to scalding hot. We literally stayed for 2 hours then left and got a room at the Hilton across the street. This place is not “boutique” it’s rundown and not maintained properly.

In addition, their bathrooms are so small (both ours and our son's rooms) that the small sink blocked one third of the bathroom entry. Also the old school style toilet, and the unstable temperature of the shower water. Learned after my stay that the Hotel San Carlos is one of the most haunted hotels in the US, lol. We were even put into room 723 which is next to the haunted rooms of 720 and 722. The 7th floor hallways did remind me of Disneyland's Haunted House since this is an older Hotel with a lot of the original decor. I didn't see any ghosts or felt spooked at anytime although my wife kept telling me how odd it was that we never saw another hotel guest. The hotel was centrally located, close to many restaurants and walking distance to the heart of downtown. I would stay here again because of the location but will pay attention more to any paranormal activity, haha.

A/C could not be controlled in the room. The bed was the lumpiest I have ever slept on and the pillows were unbearable. The shower was tiny and the water drained so slowly that it would overflow within a few minutes, even though the water pressure was extremely low. The temperature of the water suddenly and repeatedly would become scalding.

This establishment lists free WiFi and a restaurant in the lobby as amenities. The WiFi does not function and the restaurant has been closed for some time. There are other places to eat nearby, but without WiFi a guest cannot read a newspaper, verify ticket purchases/sales, find attractions on a map app . . . . I was so disappointed I checked out 17 hours early.

The lobby is exquisite with the original chandeliers. Our room was small but more than adequate. Two twin beds, a large cabinet for tv, ice bucket, and our own possessions. One caveat. There is a step up into the bathroom and therefore down again for departure. The drapes and cornice coverings over the heads of the beds are elegant. The drapes afforded complete black out at night. Coffee, both regular and decaf, was available to be made in the room. There was no microwave or fridge as in more modern choices. The atmosphere was very quiet. We were well pleased. Oh, yes. Parking can be a problem. Plenty of indoor garages nearby but the prices, $45 a day, stretched our budget. The front desk attendant gave us information for a public garage just a short two blocks away. Public transportation, electric trains and busses, are very available and fun to ride. And we laughed to see so many driverless cars carrying “invisible” passengers behind dark windows. Good food readily available in multiple places across the street and within a block or two.”

The hotel was definitely not what I was expecting. The pool was closed, and had been for some time. I feel they should update their listing to reflect that. The rooms were also very small. The beds & pillows were unforgivably uncomfortable. Like you have an old hotel but you don't have to keep the original mattresses and pillows. There was a musty, old smell to the building. On top of all of that, we found once we were there that the building is supposedly haunted and a stop on the Haunted tours. This didn't necessarily impact our stay, but it could have been better communicated. This hotel definitely had character, but I feel this listing was a catfish. Stay here for the historic and possibly haunted experience, not because you are thinking it is going to be nice.

The hotel was in a terrible state. The streets leading up to it smelled of urine. Upon entering the room, we were met with an overwhelming sense of age and neglect. There was no mini fridge or microwave, and the air was filled with a musty mildew smell. The bathroom was incredibly small, and the shower never maintained a consistent water temperature. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Hotel San Carlos. The room was a little small, particularly the bathroom, however. The hotel is in pretty good shape for its era but could definitely use some modern upgrades and conveniences. I was worried about the state of the air conditioning after reading some other reviews, but ours was adequate thank God. It could definitely of been stronger, but it was cool enough where I was able to sleep. The pool was out of commission due to renovations, apparently, so that was unfortunate because we didn't get to enjoy the heat during our stay. The room was clean so that's always a plus and house keeping was really nice as well as the staff. Overall, for the price and location, we would stay again. The room was tiny. The closet area was bigger than the entire bathroom. Restaurant was closed on weekdays when I was there. Charming in some ways and full of Phoenix, but extremely outdated. Pool is closed off with a wooden fence, sundeck is surrounded by buildings so no sun or view except for brick walls. Faucet fixtures are original. Do not expect any amenities. Parking runs upwards of $40 a day if your stay is during a downtown event. All 3 nights during my stay, there were Suns games, limited parking, and ride share couldn't get to hotel due to traffic. For such a old property with its history, you would think they would be more enthusiastic, bright and shiny at the check in desk. There is something about the hotel that is not conducive to patrons (providing maps, directions, letting people know what's going on downtown, places to go and see)...it doesn;t feel like a hub where when visiting the hotel is helpful in that aspect.

This is a historic hotel which I thought would be a bit more updated. I gave it 3* because staff was helpful and the room itself was clean and comfortable. Crawling under a desk to plug in phone/electronics was not helpful. You had to pull out heavy nightstand to access those outlets on an electric strip at bottom baseboard. Yes there was an iron and ironing board in the closet, but no outlet. I didn’t find the outlet for the hairdryer until the morning I left—above the bathroom cabinet. If you are short, good luck. The central a/c cannot be changed as it is the same temp throughout all the rooms. The only way I could turn it off was to reach up and close the vent. I am 6’ tall. Even with a chair I don’t think a shorter person would reach it. There was a $100 incidental fee; however I have no idea what would be considered incidentals. The shower had a big and deep bathtub with a handheld shower that didn’t move from the wall but the showerhead could be moved up and down and sideways. The toilet was very low. Probably 15” high max, although it felt more like 12” high. Not great when you have mobility issues. Great restaurant across the street and one in hotel and another bar/restaurant a few doors down. Very loud between 12-3am and you could also hear conversations from other rooms. The rate was inexpensive. Spots in carpets in main hallway.

Fun historic hotel with ultra friendly staff. The hotel and rooms were clean though my room had many stains on the carpet that lessened it's appeal. My only real complaint would be the plumbing. Taking a shower was difficult as it seems that anytime anyone in the hotel flushed a toilet the shower water would turn scalding hot!

Room was very clean, staff were friendly and helpful. We had a room over the pub, 4th floor, and that location was too loud for us. The city life was loud late into the night. The walls seem very thin at the hotel, we could hear the room next to us snoring all night. Very cool historical place and I’m glad we stayed there but I’m not we would again. I barely slept, but if city noises is something you can sleep through, it’s a great choice!

The room was clean, morning staff was very nice (evening staff not very friendly), and the bathroom had that historic charm. However, 4 of our 6 pillows (two beds) were like bricks. There was no thermostat in the room and the "air" kept blowing (not warm or cold). It made the room smell like a fart. In the middle of the night the radiator turned on and it got very hot, despite it not being that cold outside. There was only one outlet in our room that was accessible. I understand quirks, but there were just too many for my liking.

Have stayed many times most have been very good experiences. This time to start with key card was not scanned properly. TV did not work in the room, then was told that nobody could come up right away. When I went down to the front desk was greeted with an attitude and explained that they could not fix the TV, and I knew that. Then, was told that maintenance would not be on the property until 8 or 9, and only until 11 o'clock at night. And I was trying to go out for the night. Ended up having to gather up everything in the room and change rooms and the front desk was again. Very rude to my guest, just not a good time at all.

It was close to the venue we were going for an event. The parking situation is ridiculously stupid! You have to park in one of the nearby garages that are a block away, they say they provide valet but they do not so don’t rely on that! I understand that the hotel is old AF but the towels and beds don’t have to be! They don’t provide mini fridges either. I chose the motel out of convenience and it was just for one night, would not have chosen it if we were staying more than one night. The staff was rude as well!!! Do better!!!

The staff was friendly and the price was cheap given the area. Just not much to say about it. We needed a place within walking distance from the conference center and this was the only place available under $1000. The rooms and furniture are quite outdated and the bed was not great. Its also in Pheonix. Very hot. I searched for a thermostat in my rooms and could not locate it. I asked the front desk and they said there are not individual thermostats in each room, just one for the entire hotel. A brisk 75 degrees at any given time. Also, waited on the shower to heat up for about 20 minutes before trying the cold side. They must have installed the hot and cold water backwards because the cold side heated up immediately. Moved to the Hilton next door as soon as a room opened. If you're looking for a cheap place to sleep after a night on the town, may be a decent option. Don't stay for multiple nights.

Terrible. Due to worse weather conditions in Flagstaff/Sedona, my sister and I suffered an accident. I called them to cancel due to medical emergencies and they outrightly denied. Moreover, I saw the reviews on Google. They are terrible. The lady at the reception told me "Well you booked via 3rd party (Expedia) and not via us, so we can't refund". Expedia denied to refund as well. I would never chose this Hotel and Expedia for booking as both of them are so insensitive to even the medical emergencies!

Easy, safe 10-15 walk to the Convention Center. This is an older hotel that can use a little touch-up paint in the halls, but the rooms are clean and nice. The only complaint about the facility is the WiFi, which was unusable most of the time for me. The style of the place was fine, but the no parking and all the homeless people laying around outside was scary. I had to walk a block and a half to get to my car and that was horrible with the vagrants outside and me being a woman alone and it was late night. I had to go to my car and carry all my bags at least 3 times. Very very bad experience. I am not young and able like that anymore. Was expecting a much different relaxing time. So happy it was only for 1 night. Next week I will be there four nights just home my next location is nothing like this one.

The location was awesome, very walkable and good dining options. It is an historic hotel, and they don't hide that fact. No modern updates. If did feel that even though some remodeling could be done, it was clean. Had drinks in the Mexican restaurant onsite, cool place and great salsa. Probably should have had dinner there but didn't. Only downfall is I couldn't get the shower to work.

I hate to be so negative, but there was just nothing good about this place. I understand it’s a historical hotel but it is not remotely up to what people expect from a hotel room these days. I had problems with basically everything. The room is tiny and cramped . The walls are so thin I could literally hear the conversation my neighbor was having. The mattress was so soft I probably sunk into it 6 inches. There’s no Temperature control in the room so I was subject to whatever temperature they seem to have it set at. The TV situation was a joke. It seems like it was only local channels with commercials and there wasn’t even a channel guide. So I tried to watch Netflix on my phone, but the Wi-fi is terrible so it just kept buffering. This place needs some major modernization. I would never stay here again.

The room, while vintage, was well-cooled and very clean. Other aspects of the building are to be expected for such a historical building. The price was right for me and the location was excellent with regard to proximity to the Convention Center space and other downtown spaces. The staff were professional and friendly. The location is great if you’re staying for a concert or convention. However, there is limited parking and the parking garage is on the other side of the block. The trolley is noisy at night and the walls are super thin. It was hard to sleep especially whenever other guests are talking in the hallways; the sound echoes throughout the building. Other than that, the hotel was perfect for our one night stay for our concert.

Staff: 10/10 Bed: 10/10 Room: 10/10 Experience: 10/10 Personal Notes: Hotel San Carlos, built in 1928, is an amazing historic hotel. Being in a place that classic Hollywood celebrities have frequented during their visits to the 48th State was just amazing. To know that I may have walked the same halls as legends such as Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, & even Humphrey Bogart is just levels of awesome. Outside of the building, there are gold stars with the names & signatures of these legends, similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Next door is Seamus McCaffrey’s, an Irish pub that was once part of the hotel itself before becoming what it is today. Delicious food there, btw. Anthony at the front desk is really knowledgeable & took me on a short tour of the lobby, showing me different areas & talking about what used to be there before Phoenix grew into the Metropolitan city we know now. He showed me pictures of celebrities & even of some of the employees that had worked there for decades before they passed away. He did mention the rumors of the hotel being haunted, but I’ll be honest with you: I didn’t experience anything myself, though I admittedly only really slept there, so maybe I was sleeping when the experiences happened. But even if it is haunted, this place is still amazing. The bed was perfect. Nice & firm, which made me drift off to sleep with such ease. According to their website, it’s a Serta Sleep mattress. The facility is older, and you do not have to worry about rooms being overly cold. This is probably the downside of the facility. The "office center" consisted of one working computer and was very hot to work in. This area was the workout room, which was limited. I need to print out a bunch of documents for an appointment. Which is the reason I was there. The location, because of my needs, was very suitable and served my purpose, plus it was very reasonable in cost. The staff was very helpful since I live in Mexico, and I had a piece of mail that did not arrive during my stay. The staff was willing to forward that mail in an envelope I left them, and they followed up with me once they received it. All in all, I would stay there again if I had similar needs there again.

The negatives this building is a much older building and its A/C is central air so its not controlled by the rooms or the desk staff which made the stay very difficult to sleep. my oldest 20 and youngest 16 went home mutiple nights during the stay as they couldnt handle the heat in the room as there was no cold air at night . My wife ordered a fan and had it delivered . In previous reviews it says they provided fans to people who aaked. (She didnt ask) The pool was also closed during my visit as there doing renovations . This can be releated to old plumbing but water would jump to scolding hot every few minutes even we had it set cold, description says preium channels for the tv only had Over the Air TV stations I do kind of regret booking my stay as we left feeling agitated instesd of relaxed and happy. Now the postives the staff were amazing my wife enjoyed speaking with the house keeper. There is also a mini hollywood stars around building of classic stars that stayed at the hotel. 3rd floor where the ice maker is at they have the Marylyn Monroe suite as in history of building she was once a guest. Building is less then two blocks from the convention center . Exterior of this building was also used in both original Pyscho and the Remake Building is also supposly hunted but did not experience.

We had a standard room on a low rate, Phoenix temps in the low 100s. I found the hotel to be friendly and clean. It does show of age and some areas due for remodeling, however, the charm of the historic hotel is there. Limited conversations with staff were attentive and showed care for us as guests. The pool was drained and closed with other basic maintance well kept. The room temp was cool and with the use of the ceiling fan, the room tempature was comfortable in the Phoenix heat, this is meantioned due to other reviews read about the hotel and tempature controls. The lobby was humid and warm in the evening. It's an A+ 3-Star hotel. I was pleased with the stay and would stay there again.

The staff were nice and friendly but it doesn't make up for the poor condition of the hotel. Terrible ac (which matters in Phoenix) Water from the shower was either ice cold or searing hot. This was the most frightening hotel experience of my life! I was not informed I would have to park my car in a parking deck which was two blocks away at 10:00 PM! I had to double park my car to register at the hotel since the hotel put cones in the street to block anyone from parking. I took my bags to the room and was shocked. My room certainly did not look like the room on the website! The furniture was old and with scratches. The television was ancient with one channel (ION). Afterwards, I had to drive two blocks to park my car. When I attempted to walk from the parking deck to the hotel, I was approached by two homeless men (at different times). The first man asked me for a dollar. I told him I didn’t have any money. He walked past me. However, when I turned around he had changed directions and was walking behind me. I ran from him for a half block until I was approached by another homeless man. I started running again, past a homeless woman sitting in the doorway of a store. When I made it back to the hotel, I removed my coat and realized the room was freezing. Since there was no thermostat, I couldn’t adjust the temperature. When I attempted to take my medicine, I saw there were no cups or glasses. The mattress was of a very poor quality. The ceiling fan had extremely bright lights with long chains to turn the light and fan on and off. There was no outlet by the nightstand to charge my phone-just an old click radio. The wall of the closet was uneven and was painted over

Absolutely NO parking, so it's an additional $15 per night to "safely" park at a nearby public parking structure, a block away. Also no individual room control of thermostat. It just blows continuously. Great if you're looking for a kitchy historic place, but other than that, you'll get more for your money finding a Motel 6 in the suburbs.
