The common space at this hotel is lovely and the vibe is nice. The room was a fine size, but the bed was one of the least comfortable beds we've slept in at a hotel. For a hotel of this level, that was a big disappointment. We had an unfortunate incident at the restaurant where a dish that was marked gluten free actually contained gluten, which was a big problem for my husband, who has a gluten allergy. The hotel did a good job of trying to make it right once they realized the mistake, but you can't really take something like that back. I hope they learned from the incident, and travelers with food allergies should take extra care to avoid the situation we had. That said, the breakfasts we had there were otherwise very good and service was quick and friendly.

The only nice place in Downtown Oakland.

Thoroughly Enjoyed our stay over graduation/Memorial Day weekend. Convenient location, restaurant servers and doorman were very friendly and helpful. The gym had a good selection for a quick morning workout. I would stay again.

We paid extra for a larger room but didn’t get it. The hotel claimed it was a mistake. After reading other reviews, it’s clear this has happened before. Staff was not helpful when we raised the issue.

People were nice and lobby was okay and newish. Room was clean. Rooms were tiny, and bed was really uncomfortable. Just not the quality of room I’d expect for the money. Felt very institutional and furniture was incredibly cheap and flimsy. Like IKEA but not as nice or comfy.

Beautiful stay, the front desk staff was mostly rude other than a new hire who was training. Despite that, would stay again as the area felt safe and facility very well kept.

I loved the gentleman named John who helped us load our luggage and valet services. He was hands down my favorite part of our stay. He was so kind, he knew everyone and made sure we knew where we were going and how to get there safely. Give him a raise. I also loved Angie, our server at the restaurant. We had breakfast there one day and she was so kind to us and efficient. She made our morning so much more enjoyable.

Beds were comfortable. For starters are room was not ready at 3:00 and we had to wait until after 5:00 to check into our room. We had an event at 6:00 and it gave us no time to be ready. The front desk offered us a $50 credit towards their restaurant to which I replied that does US absolutely no good as we wouldn't even be able do you lies their restaurant during our stay. They said the room had to be inspected after it had been supposedly cleaned. There was still crumbs and sticky soda on the desk. It had not been wiped down. There was still coffee spills around the coffee maker which wasn't properly stocked. The garment steamer which we tried to use poured water and wouldn't work. There was some kind of banquet room being used for parties both nights with music bumping loudly until 11:00 p.m. we did grab two drinks at the bar one night. I asked for a Irish coffee and what I got was a scalding hot cup of coffee that I couldn't drink for 40 minutes that had a shot of Jameson in it for $17. The drink wasn't even made correctly. The hotel.clerk informed us we had a $12 credit for the snack area. She failed to tell us it was for a one time purchase for up to $12.. All we got was a soda due to her not informing us it was a one time purchase. The written info for this was given to us ayer the fact. Highly disappointing stay. For the money you pay to stay here, this could stay elsewhere and at least get a continental breakfast. Overpriced with no concern for the inconvenience they caused.

The floor in the room needed to be mopped. I wish there was a pool instead of the meditation space. There is not enough closet space.

Kissel Uptown had a great vibe. Relaxing and comfortable to hang out in the lobby with coffee or a few drinks.
- 4.5/5
The room had many thoughtful touches - motion-activated night lights on the base of the bed, a terrific make-up mirror in the bathroom, a wonderful hot shower, nice firm bed, and lots of coffee and tea to make at our leisure. The restaurant and bar had good food - nice choices - and lovely staff members served us. The outdoor refuge space is a great idea, but I think it would be nicer if it was more private -perhaps cover the windows to shield it from people looking in as they walk down the hall. And the chairs could be more comfortable - cushions perhaps.

I booked a room through booking.com. I paid $410 (without valet parking $55 and tax $11) for the room through booking.com but in the morning I found an invoice in the room that they had charged me again from my credit card but this time it was $440 for the room with valet parking and tax from my credit card. The room rate charged a second time was less than I paid through booking.com. When I asked reception about it, she just brushed me off and said that I should not have received that invoice and she gave me another invoice for $100 which included resort fee including tax ($30) and valet parking ($55) with tax ($11) . When I booked the room, I received the confirmation from the hotel which stated that resort fee is $15 which needs to be paid in the hotel and I was already charged $30 destination charge by booking.com when I made the reservation. So in total I paid $510 for the room with parking. if I had not paid it through booking.com I would have got the room for $440 with parking. The interaction with the lady in the reception in the morning was terrible. I feel I got ripped off and charged for things twice. I would not go back to this hotel neither recommend this place to anyone else.

I left my room and followed the exit signs around the hall in circles, in a panic, and finally realized that I had to go through a heavy set of metal doors, that were shut, in order to access the corridor back toward the elevators. When I got to the elevators they were *dead.* I went back through the corridor to the stairs and decided to go down the 7 flights of stairs to the first floor to find out what was going on. Immediately I ran into an older woman in a panic in the stairwell. She was relieved to see me because she had been on the ground floor when the power went out and had climbed to the 7th floor to get to her husband in their room. But she had been *stuck* in the stairwell because the doors from the stairs to the floors were *locked on every floor!* I walked her to her room, which was across from mine and she told me that the power was out on the whole block. I was afraid to be stuck in the stairwell so I decided to wait out the power outage in my room in the dark. No one from the hotel checked on me and I was refused a refund

Welcome and valet staff was awesome. Bummed the rooftop bar was closed for private event as it was one of the reasons I booked. Downstairs bar food and drinks were good, but it took a long time to get drinks and it just seemed like they needed a second bartender and wait staff.

The hotel was nice enough, but getting slapped with $55 parking + $11 parking tax (what even is that?) + $27 “Destination Fee” (what even is that?) + Destination Fee Tax really bums me out. That’s an extra $100

2nd time at the Kissel. Overall the hotel is nice and clean. A smaller 7 floor hotel which I like with a restaurant in the lobby that has limited hours. The rooms are nice and clean and well appointed. One of the recommendations I have for the Kissel is the staff are not as pleasant as one expect from the Hyatt. When I was checking out the front desk person asked me if I was someone else when the bill clearly said my name that was put under my door that I gave to him. He also checked me in and repeated my name over and over and was very pleasant the evening before. Maybe he was having a bad day....the valet was no where to be found when we got there and we parked the car on the street and then when we went to check in he was at the front desk talking to his coworker. Speaking of parking its 65.00! They charge tax on it of $11.00.

It just misses the mark for a Hyatt property. The lobby was very elaborate but the rooms were just so so. Unfortunately there’s no parking in the area other than limited street parking so you’re forced to valet for 50 dollars a night. And the valet made it feel like it was a bother when you requested your car multiple times. Resort fees exceeded what was presented online and there was no transparency ahead of time, leaving me shocked upon arrival. I reserved a room that clearly stated city view and I was given a room facing a wall, the room I thought I reserved also stated there was a bathtub and when I asked about it, I was completely gaslit and then told only suites have a bathtub. The only real plus was the refillable water stations.

It just misses the mark for a Hyatt property. The lobby was very elaborate but the rooms were just so so. Unfortunately there’s no parking in the area other than limited street parking so you’re forced to valet for 50 dollars a night. We stayed here for our daughter’s prom overnight instead of driving back home late. The hotel lobby looked like it was just redone, but the room was old and beat up. If you valet it’s a slow process especially if you are after 9pm.

Beautiful hotel. The rooms are fresh, trendy, and clean. There is a nice restaurant in the lobby as well as a nice bakery, coffee shop, movie theater, plant shop, and a church within walking distance.

Beautiful lobby and kind staff. Only downside is that we were told there would be 2 bottles of water in the room, so we were disappointed when we finally got into our room, exhausted from travel, and found only 1 (there were 3 of us staying in the room). We asked for a couple of bottles of water the next day from front desk, and someone kindly gave us 3 bottles. When we got up to our room, we found that 1 had already been opened. Just sort of bizarre. A/C also didn't work in the room, but everything else was fine and the neighborhood felt safe and clean.

Cons: Other seating is not that comfortable. Chair and couch in the room were not pleasant to sit in. Plus the $15/day "destination fee" and $52/day for valet parking (there is no other choice unless you want to drive around downtown Oakland looking for street parking. Good luck.) They want to be the Ritz. I'd rather stay at a Marriott.

The hotel is fairly new--clean and bright. The staff was friendly and helpful, the food in the restaurant was good, and the room was clean and spacious. The beds were good. The rest of the room left much to be desired. First, there wasn't a single drawer in the room. Maybe in the closet, we thought. Nope! And the only shelves were in three very small, low nightstands beside the beds. And if you wanted to hangout in the room and talk to each other, or invite others to join you, there were only two chairs. One was reasonably comfortable, the other looked like something from an avant garde design show for "trendy" furniture. It was low-to-the-ground, with a very small seat and a back that cut into your back. If you wanted to do some work at the narrow table (the only table in the room), it was simply too low to allow you to write or work at a computer. Whoever designed the in-room furniture should go and visit a comparably priced Marriott or Hilton property. Their rooms are usually comfortable and conducive to conversation and/or work. We won't be back.

My only complaint at the hotel was that the the front door automatic closure was not working and the lobby and cafe were very cold. I noticed that the staff were all bundled up in winter hats and overcoats. Hope this can be remedied. I would like to re-book when this is corrected.

I needed a place for my father to stay while visiting and the Claremont was booked. The Kissel was perfect. My Dad felt safe walking around and it was easy to get back and forth. Downtown also has great food options. The staff in the cafe inside were also really attentive and the food was good.

This property is just average due to the inconvenience of parking, and not being able to retrieve items from my vehicle without the hassle of waiting for valet to bring my vehicle to me, and the cost of parking.
- 2/5
For a property that is “dog friendly “ the staff did not assist when we needed a place for our dogs to relieve themselves. No on site place for the dogs to use was offered. Will not stay there again.

The hotel website advertizes the hotel as being in a livley neighbourhood with places for dinner and walking but there are homeless people living in tents a short three blocks away so it feels uncomfortable for us as a couple to be walking. About half a block from the hotel we were stopped and told we should not be walking here. The website for the hotel says it has a rooftop bar- well, if you go around the corner (on the street where there are tent encampments and broekn down cars people are lvining in) yes you can go up in an elevator to the rooftop bar but it isn't in the hotel. The hotel has a $52.00 valet charge and when it's not safe to walk you need to use this. Clean and updated rooms were great but common areas are badly dated (think mirrored tileson the wall in the main area and cheap worn furntiure on the main floor reception and bar-eating area) and cheap capret and wallpaper in hallways with scuff marks on walls. The main floor with the restuarnt and abr has one unisex bathroom that was out of both toilet paper and paper to dry your hands on- they just don't seem to care. Though we had a room that faced to the side of the hotel, loud car sounds continued all night and the hotel has no soundproffing in rooms. The dangerous state of the neighjbourhood and no nearby place to walk to for a meal other than cheap take out like fried chicken rules this out for us.

The room was really nice, only complaint i have is the refrigerator is way to small to fit any food or drinks inside. An actual mini refrigerator would be better. Other then that the services was great. The floor was quiet. I felt very comfortable. Would highly recommend if your staying in the Downtown Oakland area.

Traveled to the bay area with a group of family members. We reserved 3 rooms with a “guaranteed “ 3:00 check in according to Hyatt website. 1 of the rooms were ready early and we wanted to put our bags somewhere safe so they charged an extra $50 for early check in. When we returned at 3 for check in we were told that the rooms were not ready yet. After waiting almost 2 hours and having to ask various different people at the desk who were not very friendly or helpful our rooms were finally ready. When we arrived at our rooms we called down for our luggage to be brought up to our rooms. After waiting more than 30 minutes we went down to check on our luggage. The front desk were not sure what happened?!?! And called security to open up the area where our luggage was supposed to be held. Well at this point well thought we were on candid camera because it now became a joke. Our luggage was not in that room and after looking around a bit we found the cart with our luggage left in the parking structure?!?!! What a disappointment ! Management has failed !!! And to top the weekend off they incorrectly billed our credit cards at check out. Unfortunately we will not return and definitely will not recommend.

Really nice - everything felt NEW and CLEAN, i loved it. Only thing was the parking $52 overnight cost. Sheesh. And with the area being high on car break ins - it left me with no choice but to pay the $52.
- 5/5
Lovely clean hotel. Easy to get around and the staff was awesome. Cocktails and food were amazing.
- 3/5
This is an overpriced hotel in a somewhat sketchy neighborhood. And it charges hidden fees that are not included when booking a room but are charged at check-out. The hotel staff, when told, did not seem to care.
- 5/5
Loved it! Staff were very kind, and the room was very comfy and pretty

I was unsure about staying in Oakland. Our stay was very nice, no concerns at all. Gym was great. Nice bakery just outside the hotel.
- 1/5
The hotel itself is great. They charge $85 dollars for parking which is a ripoff. It is absolutely ridiculous that they charged me this much for parking for less than 24 hours. Checked in at 4:30pm, out by 8:30am. $85 is a crime.
- 5/5
I love this hotel. The staff are very nice and efficient. The rooms are a little snug but this isn’t a lounge in your room type of place. Extremely spacious bathrooms and soft fluffy comfortable beds.
- 2/5
This place has ALOT of hidden fees and the photos are not reality. The room was TINY and had a view of the dumpsters. I ended up paying $52 for parking plus tax; $50 to check in an hour early; $100 to bring my pup when it states it's a pet friendly hotel - did not show fees and was not informed until I checked in; The front desk was not friendly; She kept saying loudly that my card was declined when it wasn't even my card on file; Just overall not worth the money and a lot other better options; I will NOT be staying here ever again.

I will come back here walking distance to Fox Theater. The room and bathroom were spacious and sparkling ✨️ clean.

Oackland is in a downfall. Homeless camps 2 blocks away from the hotel. Very unfortunate. The staff is great
- 5/5
Easy, decent area, food close by and free water at the ice machines huge plusss for me. seems finding water is always an issue on trips.
- 5/5
Very clean, spacious, and new feeling hotel in one of the safest areas near downtown Oakland.
- 3/5
The rooms had inadequate storage space. No drawers and a wardrobe that required placing garments back to front, rather than side to side, where they could be seen. The handsome sink stole countertop space and used an unintuitive closing mechanism. There were no bathrobes. There was no desk surface in the room. Otto's, the bar, became very noisy at night.
- 3/5
The property was pleasant enough. Though the surrounding area is rather rough. I tried one room and asked to be moved to another one as it was noisy. There is a loud buzzing sound. I am not sure if this was a machine of some sort. I was moved to another room, which in terms of noise disturbance was marginally better. The earplugs did little to help and consequently, I got little or no sleep. If you like nice hotels this is a good place. If you want to sleep go elsewhere.
- 5/5
Very clean! Beds very comfortable and excellent bed linens. We were upgraded to a room with an outdoor patio, which was nice, but the room itself was very small. Guess you can't have everything. This was a room with one king bed. The staff was great, very helpful, and the bar/cafe is very pleasant.
- 4/5
Coming from east coast, am having difficulty finding good Italian restaurants around. It certainly does not help when there are people begging on the block around such a nice hotel.
- 5/5
The room was comfortable, and the staff was wonderful!

Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Great amenities and very clean.

This hotel advertises itself as a luxury hotel, but does not provide that level of service. When I first arrived, I had to ask the staff at the door to help me with my bags while I was clearly struggling to get them out of the street and into the hotel. When I ordered room service, the food was brought to my room in brown paper bags, boxes, and with plastic utensils, which does not count as room service. Room service in other hotels, especially ones that claim to be “luxury” hotels, food is delivered on real plates with real utensils, which is how it should be. There was also an incident when I ordered room service and was in the shower when the food was brought to my room. Apparently the server knocked on my door and didn’t get an answer so just left with the food. But rather than the hotel staff calling my room or texting me or emailing me about how they attempted to drop off my food, no one did anything and I received no information about the order. After waiting an hour later, I had to call reception myself to see what was going on. This is poor customer service. The customer should never have to initiate an investigation on the whereabouts of a food order. The staff should do their due diligence and contact the customer when there are any issues.
