Secondly, add more lights to your rooms, its dim. thridly, more charging points, like mobile laptop charging points to be added, keep liguid shower gel also along with shampoo instead of only soaps, these small things are very doable, and will add lot more to customer experience, also get the wifi checked, it worked very slow, but overall comfortable stay, we were so dead tired by the end of the day, that we would just retire like this, rest all cool aircondition was fine, nearby shops are all fine

Amazing location but only downfall is that there is no refrigerator in the room. Would be nice to have, even if there is a fee for one. The convenience would be incredible so I wouldn’t have to waste throwing away any food. Wish I could have taken my pizza back home.

The price and the location is great. This is two blocks from Astor place so a lot of East Village, uptown, and the L is easily accessible. But you pay for what you get, and the location is also a drawback. The staff was generally helpful, kind, and supportive. Con's: The rooms are a bit dilapidated. No frills. Payment is in cash upon arrival, which was news to me. I checked my email and I received a message 2 hours before check-in about this cash only policy. It is super thin walls so you can hear every creak and every conversation in the room next door. This is also a prime going out spot, so expect loud people on the street and sirens going off every couple of minutes at night.

The shower in my room had constantly running water, which created a lot of humidity and loud noise all night. It made it very difficult to sleep comfortably. When I asked to change rooms, the staff offered another room that had a very strong unpleasant smell, so I decided to stay in the original room for one night only. The hotel charged me for two nights in advance and accepted cash only. Later that evening, I discovered blood marks/stains on my towel. I immediately went to the front desk and requested a clean towel because I was uncomfortable using one that appeared dirty and unsanitary. Although they replaced it, this situation — combined with the humidity, noise, and poor room conditions — made me decide not to stay the second night. The next morning, I informed the staff that I wanted to check out early and requested a refund for the unused night. I explained all the issues and had photos documenting the running water problem and the towel condition. The hotel refused to refund me. I also contacted Hotels.com customer service, but they were unable to help because the hotel operated on a cash-only basis. As a result, I lost $140 for a night I did not stay there and had to book another hotel at my own expense. Very disappointing experience overall.

The St. Marks Hotel doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is: clean basic accommodations at an affordable price in a really cool location. On those terms it succeeds. It's not fancy and the rooms are not 'beautiful'. Everything is basic, but clean.

The hotel is old, okey for the price. The bed sheets and towels were not in a good condition, the room was small and definitely could use some renovations. Another thing to have in mind is the noise, you can hear all the activities outside your room.

You can't beat the location of this hotel. It's close to everything and right near the subway too. We went out every night after we were done sightseeing just to people watch and had the best time. It's surprisingly quiet inside, so even though there's a lot going on late at night in the Village, you can still get a good rest. The downside, is that it hasn't been updated in quite awhile. There's no elevator, hair dryer or coffee maker in the room, so it's really basic. The value is good though and it's safe and well-maintained. We would definitely stay again.

Hotel budżetowy, więc nie miałam wielu oczekiwań. Bardzo miły i pomocny personel. Świetna lokalizacja - blisko sklepów, barów i stacji metra, bez hałasu i zgiełku miasta.

You get what you pay for. I wanted a place to sleep and shower, knowing I wouldn't be spending much time in the room, and that's what I got. No A/C really. My room had a space heater that could double as an A/C if I turned it on fan and turned the heat off. Did not love the idea of only having heat when plugged in since the building is very old, but oh well. Had very limited interactions with staff, but they were friendly each time. Had a burnt out lightbulb in my room and I told them about it, but nothing was done about it while I was there. Luckily there was another light. Small shower, not much room to move around. All of that being said though, I would stay here again. You don't go to NYC to stay in your hotel room, you go to see the sights and shows and culture and explore. Less than 5 minute walk from multiple subway stations, and there is a 24 hour pizza place on the corner that has pizza, sandwiches, desserts, and drinks.

  • Shawn Apr 2026 · via expedia

The AC was not necessary for my stay as it was a little chilly during my stay but they do include a small space heater that indeed heated up my room nicely. There's no elevator, microwave, or refrigerator but for me and my personal preference wasn't necessary. The water gets hot and the TV works fine and for me with the location being beautiful was more than enough for my satisfaction. I'd recommend to anyone seeking a great location. Quiet Rooms, and most importantly if you have no issues walking up stairs. I'd definitely go again 👍

Cash only. Missing smoke detector. Water constantly dripping from the shower handle. Tiny TV with like 4 channels. You can watch Dog the Bounty Hunter in the morning, if you want. Really though, this is not the kind of place you book for a trip, it's the kind of place you book for a single night if you meet somebody on a night out & don't have a place to go. It's the best price you'll find in the area, probably because it's cash only, but it's got no illusions about what it is. And the area is fantastic, so I'd recommend it if you know what you're getting into and only need a bed to sleep in. Despite all the fallbacks, the only thing that actually bothered me was the massive cockroach in the sink on my last morning there. Everything else is acceptable for what it is.

This is a building constructed in the 1830s as a rooming house, that was repurposed as a hotel 30 years ago. Staff are very friendly, and they keep the building very clean, but it is a bare bones Hotel that serves a definite purpose. I was looking for a location to stay that was in a safer area of New York, with good access to transportation, and was affordable. This was exactly that. Located directly above a fantastic pizza and bagel location, St. Mark's Hotel offers you a room, with a bed, television, Wi-Fi, and bathroom with shower. Nothing more. When I left each morning there was a gentleman mopping the stairs to keep them clean, and when I returned late at night my room was always well managed. You are very close to the entry points for two main subway lines in the city, and bus access. You can literally get anywhere in the city from those starting points, so this location is perfect. You are also located across the street from a 24-hour drug store, and an area with numerous and unique shops. It is important to note that there is no elevator in this hotel, and you will navigate stairs even to get to the first floor of rooms. I spent 5 days using this as nothing more than a place to sleep at night, in a safer area of New York (East Village). Be aware that you must pay cash

Absolutely a nightmare! I’m 61 and I’ve NEVER stayed in a room so horrible! I froze until I realized I needed to turn on a space heater. The mattress was torn and soiled. The rug not vacuumed in a very long time and soiled! The only credit I give them is the bathroom was updated and decent. They had notifications they are renovating and supposedly the rooms on the 2nd floor were better but not a single employee was in the building to assist me. I understand they stated no elevator which is why I requested a 1st floor. Also for expedited users, you book with your credit card and the transaction is approved and then you are notified you must pay in cash, with the clerk behind a plexiglass window. I paid 240 and when I was checking in, the clerk told me 260! I showed him my receipt. So they did give me 140 back and I ran. I rebooked on another travel site for a hotel called Untitled… 180. So amazing, beautiful, eclectic, friendly and personal touches like craft of water in room, coffee and danish in morning. By far so much more for an extra 40! Expdia you lost a customer! Shame on you for allowing a dis service to your customers

Somewhat clean, nice staff, amazing location! But still, the room/facilities are basic and not too well equipped. I had 10 plugs yet I was only able to use one at the time or power went off. Not too great! Price for nyc was great and location, again, is unbeatable. Great stay overall!

This property was definitely no frills. There was no fridge, microwave, phone, or TV in the room, but I think cost reflected that. The bathroom was nice, and the windows were beautiful and had a nice view of the street below. There is no elevator, but it was a fun walk up the stairs for us, and they were super helpful in carrying our bags upstairs. Perfect for our stay in NYC over the holidays (3 college girls). The area felt very safe and was very close to public transit, and there was plenty nearby to do and see in the East Village. Ray's Pizza on the corner is 24 hours which was a lifesaver on Christmas, and the front desk uncle at St. Marks was super kind and knowledgeable about the area and things to see around NYC. Great place to stay if you just need somewhere to sleep and want somewhere central to transportation.

We chose this hotel because the price was right. However, I do not recommend to anyone for the following reasons: no elevator, you have to carry your suitcases upstairs. There is no security, the hotel is open 24 hours and the front desk doesn’t check who walks in. The rooms are cold, only heated by a small plug-in heater. There was no hot water, and the sinks were leaking every time you turned the faucet on. Also there are no tissues, no dresser or drawers, and when we asked for an extra blanket, they brought one that had four or five holes in it. On the plus side the location is wonderful, it’s right next-door to a wonderful bagel café/pizza place that has a great variety of foods and is open 24 hours and just a couple of blocks away from a CVS and a Wegmans and subway station. All in all I would never go here again. As they say, you’ll get what you pay for.

We did cut our stay short due to a change in travel plans, but if you need an affordable lodging option and don’t mind stairs, I would recommend St. Marks hotel. The location is really good and if you can catch

You go to a hotel like St. Marks when you’re on a budget. You can’t expect a five-star room for a non five-star price. I found the hotel to be very quiet and served its purpose. When in New York, you just need a place to sleep. If you’re looking for something more luxurious, I would consider elsewhere. If you’re looking for somewhere basic, simple, quiet and clean to hang your hat, then this would be the place. For a solo traveller (like myself), I found it to be very good. It also doesn’t hurt that there’s a pizza place right below the hotel open 24 hours. It’s also very close to the main subway stations to get you uptown and downtown. I could do without the shower mold; otherwise, I would highly recommend.

Stayed in NYC for a couple of days and this was the perfect hotel for us. We are both students traveling on a budget and our stay was fantastic. If you’re going to be out the majority of the day, I’d completely recommend staying here. The staff were very nice, the rooms were clean, and we had hot water and a heater for the cold winter time. It is also in a great location!

Location is great. Hotel is old and run down, borderline dirty. You get what you pay for. If you just need a place to shower and sleep, it’s fine for the price. Don’t expect anything fancy. Another negative is very loud people in the rooms next to you who slam doors. Hearing people come up and down the stairs is very noticeable. WiFi is terrible, signal is poor and once you get connected, it’s so slow. Outside noise and traffic is noticeable. Staff is nice and friendly.

The room was a perfect size with two double beds, night stand, TV and a washroom with fresh sheets and clean which was all we needed for the duration of our stay. Good things- shower was hot and shower head wasn’t awful. The front desk man let us keep our bags in a room when we went to check out so we could go out for a bit more before our flight home, I felt safe around the area, and there’s a real famous bakery right by the pizza place called Hani’s. So good. Bad things- both the bed and the pillows were extremely stiff, but I can’t expect a purple bed in a place like this so we came prepared with melatonin. Things we learned- we are so so so glad we brought a sound machine as there is a lot of noise from inside and outside the building. There’s no Netflix sign in availability on the TV. The AC remote also turns on the TV lol. The phone inside the rooms are disconnected. All in all, if we could score a room with a softer bed, we would stay here again.

The hotel is generally unkept and had a very damp mouldy smell at the bottom of the stairs. Our room was neat but I found a few stray hairs so felt like it wasn’t cleaned well. The shower had mould or atleast stained grouting and due to the floor we were on, I couldn’t open a window. There’s no fan in the bathroom so I always felt like it was a very stuffy room. The aircon looked to me as if it also had mould inside. It was black and spotty so either dust or mould, which made me uncomfortable given I’m unable to air the room. The pillows were very hard and some misshapen. The beds are very firm and flat. The staff here are ok.

the hotel is right near colleges and above a nice pizza/bagel/deli and near Astor place and union square subway stations. I would 100% stay here again - great price compared to the rest of manhattan for small quaint quarters. It was a little noisy on the 1st floor from the street but nothing I haven't experienced at more luxurious hotels. I felt safe and slept well and the location was excellent. On Bowery which was a nice street when I walked south to downtown / seaport ~45 mins and 2 blocks from broadway which I walked ~45 mins to Times Square. Ubers weren't too pricey and trains were super convenient.

The location is excellent: the subway is literally right in front of the hotel, and there are restaurants and a deli on the ground floor. The area is lively, with plenty of nightlife nearby, and it’s within walking distance to SoHo, the piers, Chinatown, and more. Public transportation access (bus and subway) is right at the doorstep, which made getting around the city very easy. What I really appreciated is that if you arrive early, you can leave your luggage at the hotel, and the same goes for when you check out. That added a lot of convenience. Overall, I loved my stay and would definitely return. For me, this place is a hidden gem in NYC—good, affordable, and comfortable.

The beds aren’t comfy, the pillows were extremely lumpy, the floors looked like they hadn’t been swept in the restroom, shower walls and curtains were not clean. The restroom door really didn’t close. Besides that the location is great and convenient. The subway is near by and the staff were super friendly.

The tap was broken so the water was flowing everywhere, and the shower tap also seemed broken so I could hardly turn on the hot water. The toilet seat was very old. The bed sheets did not look very clean. I was not sure about the cleanliness of the room in general. Other than that, the facilities were as advertised.

Bathroom didn't have latch inside. And the bathing soap cake was same as hand wash. Room didn't have any water kettle and no provision for driming water. While staff was helpful but was lacking warmth and you don't feel welcoming. Be aware that hotel accepts only cash and there is no elevator in the hotel and the stair cases are a bit narrow and steep.

Two other staff members were friendly when we checked in and offered to help with luggage but ultimately, the hotel is a bit of a dump to say the least. We expected basic, but not the filthy room carpet, air con unit filled with dust, stained sheets on the bed, no fire escape route on the door or alarm in room etc. The only thing I can say is the location is great, walkable to many areas of interest and subway stations etc.

Amazing location, and friendly staff. Beds were creaky but comfy and were made daily which was nice. I would stay again, although with ear plugs as the window offered no sound proofing to the traffic and 24 hour pizza restaurant below.

Hotel is CASH ONLY which is fine and they do state that on their website and emails. There is NO LIFT and so it's STAIRS ONLY but, again they state all this on their website and emails. The area is close to the subway but is in walking distance to many tourist attractions and the local area is totally safe to travel around at all times. For the price, it's perfect. The bed was neat and tidy as well as very comfortable with plenty of pillows. Bathroom was small yet practical with everything you needed and had shampoo, soap and spare toilet roll for your stay. If you're bringing large luggage be prepared for a tight squeeze but as I had written before, do your research. Overall the hotel is well situated and staffed through the night who can help you with all your needs. Would definitely stay there again in the future.

Check-in was quick and easy. I knew it was cash only, so I was prepared. The staff offered to carry our bags to the room. We were on the ground floor this time and didn't need help. Previously, we were on an upper floor and did appreciate the help. A kind and lovely young lady cleaned our room every day. Restaurants, grocery stores, and subways were close by. The room got a little too toasty in the middle of the day. The heating/cooling system could be improved upon. We appreciate the history and simplicity of this hotel and will stay here again on our next trip to New York City.

This was a new neighborhood for me. One which was definitely off limits 40 years ago, now safe and friendly. Ukrainian. An old hotel with small rooms and no elevator. Not for the weak in lugging up and down suitcases on narrow stairs.Luckily we packed light. Staff was very helpful in directions to restaurants. Close to Number 6 local subway.

I never got to this property because after arriving in new york, I picked up a message that they expect only cash. Cash for a three night stay in new york is a lot. I did not see anything about a cash only policy when I booked with expedia. If it was buried in the fine print, that print was too fine. You should not be offering this hotel unless you put that information front and center

The rooms are modest and compact, reminiscent of European-style accommodations, with only the essentials provided. If you're looking for an affordable place to stay in New York and don’t mind a simpler setup, this could be a great option. However, be aware that this hotel is cash-only and does not have an elevator. Hope this helps!

You get a room with a bed, a TV, a cubby-like closet with 4 hangers and a single chair. No table, no dresser, no kettle, coffee-maker or hair dryer. The washroom has limited space as well, and the shower might be too narrow for those with a wider build. There is also no elevator so keep that in mind (i think there's 4 floors total) Unfortunately, the level of cleanliness was lacking for me, with paint peeling at the corners of the room, lots of dust around the radiator, bedding and towels having stains, mold (?) between the washroom wall tiles and on the shower curtain. We started off with 2 hand towels and 2 bath towels for my partner and I, but after the 1st day, we were only given 2 bath towels. It was a little peculiar, but we didn't care enough to speak up about it. My biggest gripes were the lack of a hairdryer and the cleanliness, but all in all I think this hotel is an excellent choice for those with a tight budget or those who only need a place to sleep and shower.

¿Si me volvería a quedar? Lo podría volver a considerar si es la opción más economica en manhattan.

If you’re looking for a hotel where you’re in the middle of the city specifically the West Village, which is very convenient and close to many dining options and shopping that’s open 24 hours. This is the place for you and especially if you’re not looking for a two talkative staff that just give you what you need and a place just to sleep and spend the night. The rooms are not very big but it gives you what you need.

This place is very bare-bones with kind of a weird vibe. The mattress was extremely uncomfortable, and the bathroom barely had any room to move around. There were almost no surfaces to put anything. The hot water took forever to get warm. The room was freezing at night, but the included space heater helped. Seemed like a bit of a fire hazard, though. The staff were friendly enough and helpful with getting suitcases up and down the stairs, since there is no elevator.

The hotel room was very good for its price. Not enough space though but still quite good for a short stay. The hotel management accepts only cash which can be a hassle. They should start accepting credit/debit card payments. The room and bathroom was clean. Heater was there in the room. Will recommend this hotel to everyone who plans a short stay in NYC on a budget.

Now, the not so good: My room was tiny. I mean, barely enough room for me and the bed. There was a closet-ette I could hang a few things in, a small chair, and a phone, but that’s it. The remote to the TV was missing a battery, but it wasn’t even the same make so it might not have even worked. The pillows were inconsistent in shape and size with most being flat. The bed was comfortable enough though the mattress was pretty beat up and falling (?) out from under the bed. The bathroom was also tiny, and I had to close the door to even sit on the toilet. The shower (no tub) was filthy with mildew all over. This is not an exaggeration. There’s no fan or cover for the light fixture which actually came in handy when the bulb burnt out, and I changed it myself. The towels were rough and thin. The water took forever to get warm, then would randomly go from hot to lukewarm. Maybe due to others showering at the same time. The front door rubs on the carpet so badly you have to really pull it hard to close it. It’s a shame because it has a lot of charm, but is in need of major upkeep and renovations.

For a hotel in Manhattan there was simply nothing else in this price range. If you book here, you should expect a full room, it's not a hostel. The room will be clean. There is no elevator in the building, so getting luggage up and down the stairs is a workout, but the staff are happy to help you out. The hotel only accepts payment in cash, so bring your money with you. The room was very small and cramped by non-nyc standards. There is a 24 hour pizza and bagel shop underneath the hotel that's super convenient. The downsides of being a walk up and the room being small are understandable considering it's so affordable and it's in NYC. As long as you are good with these I'd strongly recommend this establishment for an affordable NYC stay. Only a block and a half away from the 6 train.
