Reviews
The hotel has a great location, being close to the subway and various amenities. However, the cleanliness and condition of the hotel are major concerns for many guests.

We arrived at the hotel and it didnt look like the pictures. We checked in and we're told we were on the forth floor and there was no lift. This isn't a hotel for people with disabilities. The room was clean and the towels were changed daily but it needed a lot of TLC. The location was amazing and compensated for the room, lots of nice restaurants round and right by a tube station. Overall we only slept there as we were out all day.

Beds were comfy, room was clean, love having a kitchenette. Great location
- 0.5/5
The space is falling apart. Completely unsanitary, even for New York City standards. When mentioned that I was not staying there the front desk person shouted at me saying I should deal with booking directly to solve my reimbursement request.

Great location, but that’s it. The location of this hotel is absolutely exceptional, but unfortunately, everything else was really disappointing.
- 2/5
Air con not working, lights not working, no soap provided in the bathroom, tv remote not working - felt very expensive for all of these issues but it’s NYC
- 4/5
Look, let's be clear. The 309 offers cheap but safe lodging in a great area of NYC. If you choose to stay there, don't be surprised if you don't feel exactly pampered. You're not staying there to have a 5-star experience and you shouldn't complain about not having one. The shared showers/bathrooms were fine and kept pretty clean. The sheets were clean. It was relatively quiet and the AC worked on blazing-hot days. They were efficient at check-in, the staff gets you clean towels when you need them and they're very pleasant, especially given the fact that they work in a non-elevator building. The mini-fridge worked fine. But the place is sort of rundown. I've stayed in worse and spent more money. If you choose to stay there, enjoy the city and be happy about not spending $600 a night on a place to sleep.

Super location next to the subway station. Room was clean and comfortable. Air conditioners a bit dated, but they got the job done. Patio area is a nice place to hang out.

Very good location in a more quiet neighbourhood of NYC. Excellent place between midtown and downtown.

Location!
- 4/5
It was a no frills hotel. The location is right by the subway line, Chelsea Market and other food places. The room was small and the futon was somewhat broken but for the price and location you can’t beat it. If you need an elevator you won’t be able to stay.

Subway station few meters from the door Backyard. Crew is very helpful and nice. The cat sometimes starts to be pain in the a.s but that was my doughter fault. Unfortunatelly stairs (and back yard could be nicer)
- 4/5
You obviously get for what you pay for. We just wanted a place to sleep in, no luxury. The place is clean, the staff is friendly and the cat is the most adorable doorman ever. Give Bronce 5 stars. Is elevators are important to you then be advised that there is no elevator here. I'd definitely stay here again to save money.

It was mostly clean, but don't expect the same level of cleanliness as a corporate hotel. The staff was really nice and sweet. My room had a private bathroom, so it was really convenient. There is no elevator, so I had to take the stairs to the fifth floor every time.

- 3/5
No private bathroom in the rooms, which was a bit of a surprise since it wasn't mentioned anywhere. The sheets were stained and the place generally didn't feel very clean. Fine for just crashing for the night, but that's about it. Bottom line: cheap, central location with access to tourist spots and one minute from the metro.

Stayed 3nights with 2 older teenage sons. Booked for location & price . Got checked in early which was really nice . Hotel 20min straight walk from MSG & Penn station . Subway stop 15 steps from hotel front door takes you to Penn Station in 8mins Room on 1st floor . Cleaned each day & new towels. Bathroom & fittings worked perfectly but very old . Double Bed & Sofa bed mattress not great . All our backs were goosed by night 3 . Room was warm & had working air con . Staff at front desk & cleaning lady were lovely . Extra pillows & stored our luggage after check out . Disappointing that outside area shown in photos not usable as weather was good enough to sit out . Out all day so needed clean & warm which is what we got . Not a bad stay but won’t be going back . Old Decor . Room dark with no natural light Mattress were really not good .

The room was big and we had our own sink. Location is in a nice part of Chelsea and right near the metro. It was not loud for it being a NYC hotel which was very much appreciated. Bed was very squishy. The cat would sit outside of you room and meow but ended up not being as bothersome. Bathrooms were small and somewhat clean. The AC didn't seem to work.

The location is absolutely 10/10… The rooms are basic and clean. No frills and completely value for money accommodation in the Manhattan area. It’s a bit dated, but not a real challenge. No elevators, which might be an issue for some people.
- 5/5
The location was perfect, Subway entrance is next to the hotel and takes you to Time Square in less then 5 minutes! Clean towels and made up bedsheets everyday, as well as a clean bathroom every single day. The bathrooms are shared with only 2/3 rooms, so we didn’t have any trouble to take a shower! Sounds from the streets can be a bit loud, but what do you expect from a hotel in the center of nyc?

Did not know about hotel cat until it snuck into our room. Beautiful feline, but it would have been bad if we had locked him in our room on way out.

Fridge and microwave were in good working condition. no issues.
- 4.5/5
The location is great! Right next to a subway station, and near some pretty good eateries. They gave us fresh towels daily and made up the beds, which was nice. I know it's an older building, so there's no elevator. Yet, walking up a few flights of stairs wasn't an issue. For those who may have limited mobility, they need to factor it in before booking a room.

If you’re looking for a really simple room, that’s about it. The highlight was hanging out with the cat teehee. Building is a little old and you can hear a lot of outside noise but I had no troubles with anything and the hotel actually allowed me to check-in without my credit card since I forgot it, which I deeply appreciated. Good location, had the best pizza right next door and a CVS right at the corner. Overall good if you’re planning on spending it out most of the day.

Small room, staff is hardly there or sleeping on the job
- 5/5
it was unique beds were comfy, cute kitty in the halls
- 2/5
No working air conditioning. Tv too low and hit my head on the corner just trying to get around the bed
- 2/5
You get what you pay for there is no parking under 100 a day around plan accordingly
- 3/5
Well situated. Smaller space, common area wasn't usable from garbage.
- 2.5/5
Bathrooms were clean. Bed was comfortable The bathroom door by the stairs on second floor need to be changed. The carpet on the stairs was way so dirty. The door of the room was loud when opening/ closing.
- 1/5
Hotel isn’t as shown in pictures. There was construction going on inside. The floor we were in especially. It was loud and dirty. We were never told that there would be construction. No elevator. The staircase was extremely dusty and dirty. No air conditioning in room. Bathrooms were okay. It was just uncomfortable because you had to pass all the construction workers to get to the bathroom.
- 4/5
Great location so good value to quickly see all the Manhattan sights. Bed was comfortable, the showers were decent, and the staff were helpful. It's very well connected to the subway right outside, and is easily walkable to Greenwich Village, Chelsea Market, and the High Line. A few less-than-ideal aspects (air conditioning didn't work, there wasn't a remote for the TV, cleanliness of common areas could be better) but for a cheap and cheerful place it did the job for us.
- 4/5
If you know what you’re booking, this can easily be a 4–5 star experience. The location is one of the most convenient you’ll find in NYC—you’re practically on top of four subway lines, within walking distance of Greenwich Village, surrounded by great restaurants, and right next to a CVS. The rooms are small, and there’s a shared bathroom, but that’s clearly stated and reflected in the price. At about a third of the cost of other nearby hotels, it’s a great value—you really do get what you pay for. A fun bonus was the hotel cat, Bronx, who was an adorable surprise. I’d definitely stay here again My only minor complaint is that there was a window AC unit stored in the closet. It would’ve been nice to have it running, as the room was a bit warm, though I assume they’re installed during the summer months.
- 0.5/5
I liked how no one bugged me and the place was nearby the main shopping areas was able to walk to time square and the diamond district on 47th so many options within 15-30 mins from hotel it was great food cloth jewelry all within 2 miles The bed was leaning the sheets were from prison hairs on bed /stains the floor was sinking all the trim had cracks and mold stains cracks and holes in the drywall the tv has 16 channels and all of them play commercial the tv is like from 2005 the window in the room was filled with holes and metal tape from all the rust that was drilled out the bathroom is a health violation the walls had painted mold chunks of plaster missing and the toilet seat was to big for the bowl and the toilet leaks like crazy when you flush it if your coming with a date/girlfriend/wife DO NOT BOOK I didn’t take photos but I took a video of the leaking toilet and the bathroom condition because it was so mind blowing
- 5/5
Great Location! Super close to the Subway station. The building is really old, so there are pipes in random places and there are a lot of nooks and crannies, lots of character! They are doing some remodeling/updates right now, the room and bathroom were very clean. We had an economy room so we shared with other people on the same floor, but there was never any problem. I would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
The only issue we had was there was no AC. It was cold outside so it makes sense if they only provide it during the summer but it felt stuffy
- 1/5
No tp holder in bathroom Construction on every floor Dusty in the hallways It’s a walk up No body wash in the bathroom but yet they provide shampoo and conditioner. The shower makes an extremely loud it screeching noise that won’t stop until It turn it off It is one of the dirtiest places I’ve ever stayed in. The pictures are catfishing
- 5/5
It was very close to the Subway station, we had enough space in the room, it was very comfortable The smell sometimes wasn’t nice
- 4/5
Outdated room but very clean. Nice staff and right next to subway station. One block from Chelsea Market....wonderful location. Not as attractive as chain hotel but comfortable and clean...perfect for sleeping and getting ready for a day of siteseeing.
- 2/5
Friendly staff, but dirty halls, window wouldn’t fully close, loud street noise
- 2/5
This hotel is very misleading with the photos. The "lounge" area was filled with boxes and the furniture is clearly gone through a lot since they were taken. There were exposed wires thay makes it very unsafe if you have small children. The lobby area is cramped and also has boxes making it even harder to navigate. A mop bucket sat outside our room the entire time. The "safe" in our room barely worked despite the several signs saying to use it. The parking next door is also the most expensive in a 3 block radius by a wide margin. The only redeemable thing about this hotel is its close provimity to the 14th street subway station which can get you uptown or downtown in 10 minutes.
- 4.5/5
The location is extremely great!!! Just next to the subway and many groceries, cafes and many more! A bit noisy because of the street outside however we managed to deal with it. We stayed in March so it was a bit cold inside the room (we put blankets and towels under the window, yes the windows are a bit old and not so tight). The cleaning crew is very polite, we had our towels changed every day. There was no hair dryer however we asked for it and immediately got one. The reception staff could be more friendly, maybe it’s just their attitude, but they were helpful. Next time I visit NYC I’ll definitely consider staying here again. -
- 3/5
Close to Chelsea market and public transit. CVS right next door, and had a plethora of food options. Kitchenette and fridge were provided; Television with apps like Peacock and Netflix in case you get bored. There was no chain lock or security bolt on the door. There was no way to control the temperature, so the room was quite hot.
- 1/5
Room and bathroom was dirty. Not a comfortable stay ended up checking out after the first night and going to a different hotel.

Staff was very friendly . We chose to stay on the bottom floor so we didn’t have to climb stairs. It was very quiet at night. We didn’t hear other guests or street noise. So much better than when we stayed in Times Square. We did hear workers and people at the front desk but that’s when I was already awake. Great accommodations for the price. Would stay again. Also, VERY conveniently located to the subway. One building away. Easy travel uptown and downtown.

Fabulous location near the Highline, Chelsea Market, and so much shopping. Great place to say with a 9-year-old, we kept busy with playgrounds nearby, farmer's markets, and more. Nice that the rooms have little kitchenettes too. Only thing I didn't like was the mattress was very worn and sunk in the middle, so I couldn't sleep well here.

I didn't expect much, but certainly didn't expect to be staying in a seedy-like motel that was a bit above filthy. I had to apologize to my 14 year old for not paying more attention to the listing on Hotels.com and disappointed in Hotels.com for evening listing this hotel in the first place. I would give 1/2 star if there was an option. Shower didn't work, tub was dirty, bathroom floor was dirty, beds springs were worn down to so much, they both had an extreme lean to them rending both extremely uncomfortable. Etc...

Negatives - window blinds broken (no improvement in 6 years), tired decor, mattress awful (it was sunken in the middle). Overall, a good option if you're on a budget but it comes with compromises. I wish they'd invest a little in the property and it could be so much better (please change your blinds so light can come into the rooms).

The property was relatively clean. It was overpriced but lower end for Manhattan. The room, furniture and bedding were worn out and were cheap. There were holes in the walls, missing fixture covers, non-functional outlets, and wifi not working. bed was barely holding together and bedding was synthetic and piling. I had alot of issues with my fight and management was totally unbending. Saying I would have to pay for the stay and would not adjust dates or provide a future credit if my flight was canceled. I wouldn’t stay here again.

But things could be improved like cleaning the toilet and throwing unwanted toiletries away. Allocating low level for people with big luggages as it has no elevator. Overall it is good enough for solo trips and not if you are traveling with family.

Our room had a queen bed and we were three, so they gave us a foldable bed for one with no problem. We did the check in early with no issues. The manager is really nice. There are two bathrooms in each floor and were very clean. There was a very cute cat that came into our room frequently. They have free umbrellas for 24 hours. We lost one of our keys and the manager gave us another one with no fee. Very good location and good price. Everything was easygoing.

Not a very clean hotel, bathrooms were not cleaned regularly and didn’t have hand soap or hand towels. The door keys didn’t work half the time and the check in staff was not helpful and did not explain the hotel (i.e bathroom location, hotel policies, etc). Would not stay here again.

In addition, the management was very accommodating. My husband was not able to climb stairs at this time, and they assigned us to a first-floor room without any hassle. In addition, we had to leave early due to a snow storm, and they easily refunded our second night stay without any hassle. We will stay here again.

Is Hotel 309 fancy? Nope. Does it have a restaurant, bar, or lobby? Also no. But what it does offer is an affordable, cozy stay that feels more like a studio apartment than a traditional hotel. You get a private bath, great rates, and an unbeatable location with easy access to Chelsea and the West Village. There’s even a CVS and a subway stop right at the end of the block—so convenient! Bonus points for the in-room fridge, microwave, and coffeemaker, which the midtown Hilton didn’t have. This stay was truly greater than the sum of its parts—hence my 5-star overall rating (even if the individual aspects got 4 stars). I’d absolutely stay here again!

This is a good and affordable location in NYC. We did enjoy the Pizza place, The Chicken, and the cookie places across the street, and there was a CVS right around the corner. This is an older location but has a rustic feel. Please be advised (as noted above) that there are no Elavators. Also, there is a kitty who stays in the hallways. The staff was friendly and the sharable restrooms are great, especially if you are sharing a room and need to shower or use the restroom if the one you have is occupied.

There was a cat that followed us from the stairs into our bedroom and onto the bed. We left. Nothing about this hotel felt safe and nothing about it was remotely clean or hygienic. I've stayed in hostels that are better.

Really hard to imagine recommending this "hotel" - 309 is really a just hostel to anyone with traveling experience abroad. 309 is really a rough ride - but it woul dbe better IF it had a more honest profile. I booked through Expedia - so it was probably that corporate site's fault, but it's not helping "309". If 309 was advertised as a great hostel/budget option in an amazing location, with absolutely no frills, ambiance, or extras, it would be cool. But it looks like it competes with other new pods and nicer offerings. It is not nice AT ALL but it is cheap. The people working there are VERY nice. But it's the kind of place that makes you wonder about bedbugs. The toilets on my floor (shared) were both backed up first thing on the first morning I stayed in the hotel. That's what I got.

The location is amazing, it has great access to public transportation. On the other hand, I wish it was cleaner, the room was good size, but the floors were dirty and the bathroom and towels weren’t as clean as in other places.

Great area to stay. Hotel was grubbier than on the photos. Shared bathrooms were not well maintained. No elevator.
- 4/5
the hall was smelling bad, and even if there was an a/c in the room, there was not any chance to open the window. Also, housekeeping did not come to our room to clean or take out the trash for 3 days. Moreover, the ceiling of the bathroom’s wall was leaking..

The staff were very nice, but the room was very small. The television in the room was extremely grainy, the outlets were loose, and there were no tissues or garbage cans. Shared bathroom with other guests. Felt more like a hostel then a hotel. Very convenient location though, and it did feel safe.

Typical NYC walk up. Small space but expected in NYC. Nice to have private bath and kitchenette for sure. Very close to subway system. Three in room is tight but made it work. Lobby and stairwell smelled like cat urine, cat is very nice though.Need 3 prong plugs near living area, only in BR and Kitchen. Ironing board need updated, lumpy. AC worked great. Need 4 serving items in Kitchenette, not even enough for 3 people andneed handtowels and was clothes.

Everything is also so dark and the stairs can’t fit a person with bug bags so you kinda have to go up and down when you have too much stuff. My keys wouldn’t work at least once a day so I would have to take the stairs 5 floors down and 5 floors up to get them fixed. There’s a cat (very cute) I think probably for rats or something like that. I’m sure it’s also responsible for the smell.

the property was well located for the price, however it wasn’t worth the surprises we ran into. When we arrived, we were told we would be on the fifth floor- which would be fine if there was an elevator. Two 40 year olds with bad backs had to carry all their stuff up to the fifth floor using only stairs. There was a cat who lived in the building- the third floor smelled of cat litter. Why was the cat there? Clearly for pests. The shared bathroom was okay, I guess, but there was a towel on the floor for the three days and two nights we were there that never moved and a cockroach crawled up the drain while the other person I was there with was showering. The beds clearly had bed bug encasements on and I saw a black dot- which means poop. It wasn’t covered in poop parts and was likely on inside but still disconcerting. Lastly? They give you a sheet and one incredibly thin blanket to sleep with- so bring your own blanket if you want to stay there. The four pillows were good and the little kitchenette was handy.
- 3/5
No elevator and they don’t let you know.

Place is located where walking distance to the sub, but the hotel is false advertisement in the pictures the restroom was horrible kitchen floor was falling apart , but I just need it to sleep for a few night but still pictures don’t look for what I got !

Was great for a short trip, hotel itself its a little dirty and old , but right next to the train station, the pizza in front of it its the best one

NO ELEVATORS and we were on the 5th floor, lady at desk laughed at that, and there are Shared bathrooms! Very run down - rooms felt sort of clean and communal baths were clean, but what dump at 200.00 per night!
- 1/5
Reception never available for hep and never answered phone. Property is run down and decrepit.

- 2/5
This is a share bathroom place, where more than 15 people shower every day. The location is good, however the property condition is extremely poor. I will recommend this place as the last option.
- 2/5
This is clearly a budget ‘hotel’ so you’ll just need to know that going into it. We had an economy room with shared bathroom and it was still 200 or so a night, but hey it’s NYC.. and location location location! Bed had terrible springs and if you’re with a partner they will have to climb over you to get out. So room was tiny. Small kitchenette with very limited cutleries (two cups, two small plates, two cups and silverware, but for no odd reason any glasses. ) Tiny ac unit that is boarded into the window which felt a bit claustrophobic. Feels a bit like a firetrap as there’s only one escape route, though there is a sprinkler system. Bathroom is veryc basic. Cute house cat
- 5/5
Friendly staff. Clean comfortable rooms. The bed was soft and had extra pillows. Our room faced the back and was very quiet. A subway stop was steps away. Restaurants everywhere. A busy safe neighborhood. They had a Hotel Cat, which thrilled my daughter. It's, a one star hotel, and the building shows it's age. The shared bathroom was clean and available when we needed it. Unfortunately the lounge and garden were closed when we were there. The kitchenette was a great bonus, for a one star hotel. We would definitely stay again.
- 1/5
Place looked nothing like the pictures and was very noisy. Didn't sleep because of it
- 2/5
The place was really dirty, specially the restrooms which were shared.
- 2/5
Would not recommend unless you are ok with hostel environment. I did like outdoor space in back. But kitchen area not as shown. Bathrooms could be cleaned more often
- 4/5
No Elevator, but they were very kind to help me lift and carry the luggage up and down the stairs. The Location was AMAZING, right next the subway and the CVS. The mini fridge and microwave were so helpful and the shared bathroom was usually available when I needed it. But I hate when the TV DOESN’T WORK.

- 1/5
This hotel is very dated and lacks amenities you would expect at a hotel with this nightly rate. We canceled our stay after the first night. Hotel room was not clean, communal bathroom was not clean, the rooms are very loud offering little privacy.
- 2/5
I am absolutely infuriated and feel utterly deceived by the false advertising of this hotel. What was promised as a comfortable stay turned out to be a nightmare in this dilapidated, filthy excuse for a motel. With no elevator in sight, we were forced to trudge up and down five exhausting flights of stairs. The photos of the rooms are a complete farce - they're cramped, with furniture falling apart at the seams. The window shutter was hanging off its hinges, the bedside cabinet was lopsided, and the so-called second bed was as uneven as a seesaw. And the bedding? Those thin, pathetic sheets left us shivering through the night, a far cry from the warm covers we were expecting. The bathroom was just as disappointing: small, grimy, and utterly neglected. I urge everyone to steer clear of this place. It's a blatant rip-off!
- 5/5
This location is very convenient to the major subway lines. You can hop on the L train at the corner and go to Brooklyn, you can get on another train in the same station and go uptown. It is blocks from Chelsea Market and the West Village. This is not a fancy place, but clean, cozy, and convenient. This was my second stay here.
- 3/5
I will say however, that it is quiet noisy. You can hear the traffic and all the conversations people are having right outside your window. The beds need to be upgraded as they feel old and worn. Overall, I'd say if your looking for a convenient place to stay this place is great. But if you are looking for something with comfort and an emphasis on cleanliness you might want to look elsewhere.
- 2/5
I would like to get my money back or at least tell me why is not acceptable this place
- 2/5
Our room had a queen/twin bed that stretched from one side to the other, you had to climb over it to get to the other side. The closet had 2 hangers and an aircoditioning unit on the floor. the safe was locked. The bathrooms are NOT attached there are two on each floor with doors that could be easily pushed open, and needles to say are not clean as all rooms use them. This is also a walk up. The whole building is very tied looking. It should not be rated as a Hotel but as a Hostel.

I lived there on the 5th Floor in the 90's for 5 years I stayed in Room 23 in 2019 on a business trip and now Staying in Room 15 for a week as I was Moving out from an old apt and into a new apt for me 309 Staff is always efficient patient kind nice and Helpful! Im very Grateful Ann
- 3/5
My main issue was with the washrooms, there were bugs and the toilets consistently did not flush; however, the staff was quick to fix it. We went out late our first night and the key card they gave us did not work. We waited in the lobby for several minutes before my partner had to call out for somebody to help us. The staff member was kind, though, and resolved the issue; however, it was sort of awkward having to call out for help every time, as there was rarely somebody at front desk. We stayed for three days and staff came into the rooms to clean everyday, which was nice. Check in and out was quick. The room is small, but you get what you paid for the location is excellent. We would definitely consider coming back because of the price and location.
- 5/5
Everything was great. I saw nothing of what some of these bad reviews say. The bed wasn’t the best but that’s fine. I had to walk up stairs to the top floor there is no elevator but I enjoyed that because I need to walk some steps (lol) and no I am not in any way fit at all. Everything around the hotel was also great and it’s in such a nice area. The staff were friendly and rooms were cleaned daily if wanted/needed.
- 2/5
No elevator. Asked for low floor but didn’t get one. Rooms small. Desk friendly enough but only so much you can do with what you’re got.
