The hotel is generally praised for its unique design, excellent location, and friendly staff. However, cleanliness and maintenance are consistent issues, with several guests complaining about dirty rooms, rust, and broken amenities. The policy of holding onto car keys is also a point of contention.

The location was the best part, and I think the higher price is justified because of it. The staff was always available at the front desk and very attentive. The room comes with a mini fridge, microwave, and hair dryer. The lobby is also a highlight — very colorful and artistic, and it's clearly the one area they keep clean, maintained, and tidy. •The bathtub would flood every time you took a shower •Mold on the ceiling •Poor quality towels and bedding sheets •The rooms are in dire need of a remodel — it feels like maintenance has never been done. I understand they want to preserve what they have, but it comes across as neglected and poorly kept.

The location was close to my festivities. The price was good. I stayed from Tuesday to Sunday. I like that the place is artsy and not that far from the beach. Check in and out was easy with no hassle. The front desk guys were nice people. My room was warm, the window unit didn't get my room cold. It's too hot in South Beach in the summer to come in and not be cool down. The key was a bit much. The whole door and door knob. It feel like someone could have easily broken into my room. The floor had cracks in it. My ceiling fan stop working.

Awful experience My experience with the James Hotel was lacking in several areas. Regarding parking, the booking website indicated that a parking lot was available. However, upon arrival, I was informed that my SUV was “too large” for their parking, and I would need to obtain permission from a manager for it to be accommodated. The attendant mentioned she would seek this permission by the following morning. When I left early, I did not have the opportunity to speak with the manager, and upon returning in the afternoon, the same employee informed me that the parking spot was no longer available since I had not spoken with the manager. It appeared that the attendant was providing excuses, as they clearly lied about having parking for the guesses. As for the room, there were issues with the bathroom light, which would turn off shortly after being activated, resulting in primarily dark showers. Additionally, the elevator was out of service on three occasions during our five-day stay. Overall, the customer service fell short, and the issues with both the parking and the room detracted from the experience. Based on this, I would not recommend staying at the James Hotel if you are visiting Miami Beach. I plan to return to Miami Beach next week and will be more careful when selecting my accommodation.

Other than the perk of parking its was terrible. More like a hotel that’s 1000 years outdated. They said the city was working on power and would be restored by 9pm but that was bs. Our light went out and back on every 2 minutes. Then at 7 am their workers knocks on our door to ask for our car keys….keep in mind Tesla uses phone key. Never ever would stay here again.

We went to complain to the staff at the front desk, but they were a little rude. They said the entire city was without power, but the reception area had all the lights working. In our room, the TV and microwave were working, but the lights were not. They also said it had been like that since the day before. When we asked why they didn’t let us know beforehand, they said there was nothing they could do. They told us to file a complaint through Expedia and request a refund, so that is what we would like. Overall, it was a terrible experience and I would not recommend this hotel.

I booked this because the location was perfect for an event but I was worried because the price was so affordable. After staying here I can say book with total confidence!!! The hotel was adorable, and the room and bathroom was clean and spacious. The location was perfect! We went to the beach every day and we were walking distance to everything we could need. So if you don’t need a pool at your hotel, and why would you if you’re right next to the beach, and you are concerned because the prices of the rooms seem low, book with confidence! This place was amazing!

The hotel is very charming. It is not updated nor is it modern but considering the price it’s really good. It’s very clean, again it’s not modern but well kept and has nice decor through out the entire hotel. Parking is so convenient. Also the location is perfect. Walking distance to many restaurants/coffee shops. And a quick walk to the beach. The beach is nice very pretty sand and the water is great, some heavy waves but great for sun bathing. The beach has chairs/umbrellas/towels for rent and also a bar/restaurant where you can order. Overall the location is great, loved the hotel decor and parking. There is an elevator, it’s small so I took the stairs every time and felt that was faster. Found the staff helpful and kind

If you want more toilet paper, you need to ask for service, they don't have any at the front desk and said housekeeping takes care of that, but didn't tell me that at check-in. They told me no hotel will have toilet paper at the front desk. The location is good. It's a quiet neighborhood, but some people who stay there can get loud and make quite a bit of noise.

Negatives - some of the reception staff were very rude especially about the parking & demanded that we leave our car keys or park well elsewhere. Need to improve the tone in which they speak to guests. Months before arriving we tried to change the dates of our stay and they were very un-accommodating when they finally answered the phone. Stated no availability despite it showing as available on other booking sites. Nearby night club with really loud music until middle of the night. Luckily our jet lag meant we managed some sleep despite this & the very bouncy beds. 2 nights was more than plenty.

Beds are squeaky the window shades block no light repairs needed everywhere. There is parking included. We had a refrigerator and a microwave. There were exposed wires on the microwave and looked unsafe to use. The rooms were fault big and had a table with two chairs to sit.

The A/C kept the room cool and there was a ceiling fan. The Beds need replacing. One of the two beds had such a bow in it that if I had slept on it I might never have gotten out of the dip. The bed I did sleep in the springs poked me most of the evening. The room was made up everyday and soap and shampoo were provided. Linens were clean. There was a small microwave and fridge in a closet and there was a small TV. There was also a good sized closet to store your clothes. I guess the one thing that really turned me off to this hotel is that the door locking mechanism was so flimsy a large nudge would have pushed the door open. I didn't feel safe leaving anything in the room as there was no safety deposit box. So I took all of my electronics with me where ever I went. They offer coffee from 8-9 am. The give you about a 4 oz cup to put it in and there was a box of donuts there to. An added bonus. The hotel is charming but upgrades need to be made. The staff was friendly and it appeared someone was at the desk 24x7. They had a parking lot of which was only about 1/4 full. Since I didn't have a care I am not sure if they charge for parking.

Very convenient to beach, restaurant, shopping, etc. Free parking. Improved rooms now have a small refrigerator and microwave. Beds are double beds and very simple but we knew this since we have stayed before. When checking in we asked for room on first floor. You have to go up a few steps. Every other floor has elevator access, but we like convenience of being on first. Asked for room not on parking lot side and was assured we wouldn’t, but in the end we got parking lot side which means that on first floor you can’t open curtains specially at night. However, room was a bit more spacious than we had before so we kept it. If you want to stay a great deal of time in room and hotel, go somewhere else. But if you are looking for convenience, free parking, and a place to sleep, then this is the place for you. We missed the owner who lives there and was accommodating. Management seems new and ok but not like before. By the way, you get free coffee and donuts starting at 8 am exactly, a nice amenity. However don’t wait too long because donuts might be gone. We’ll stay at the James again as we’ve done many times before.

If you arrive early there are limited spots for guest and it's rate to find that on South beach. Next it's convenient to all the main restaurants, clubs and stores of Lincoln road. Last, surprise that it had a microwave and small fridge to have extra doggie bags and to keep your drinks cold. Don't know if you arrive super lafter 11pm of any staff can check you into a room because when we arrived and had already check in had security open the door so in case you have a late flight just keep in mind and metion that in your request god forbid you arrive late and don't have a. Check in person......if you have a car you have to park there snd leave your keys with front desk but to me that's good because it keeps you from moving and losing your spot.

My experience at the James Hotel can only be described as horrific. The hotel staff actually called the local police to have me and my son removed for trespassing, simply because I found a problem with the mattress and requested a room change. Four policemen forced us leave the hotel. My son was terrified and cried. Afterwards, I requested a refund, but they said I had booked through Expedia and told me to get a refund from Expedia. The local police were clearly biased towards the hotel. One of the police officers, named E. Santana, was particularly vicious and had a terrible attitude. The story was after we checking in at 3:00 PM, I discovered a problem with the mattress; one side of the mattress was sagging. I requested a room change, but a staff member at the front desk said there were no other rooms available. I explained that the mattress was broken, the springs on one side had collapsed, and it was impossible for me to sleep on it. She said that all the mattresses in the other rooms were the same. This was clearly lying. Later, while I was showering, my son explored the hotel and found that there were other empty rooms upstairs. He came back and told me, so I went to the front desk again to request a room change. They then threatened me, saying that if I continued to complain, they would call the police, the

The building was very unique , we stayed with kids and they were so excited to check all the statues every time we enter to the lobby . The elevator was very slow , hotel is old but clean . Loved the morning donuts and coffee . Very close to everything but also not noisy . Will go back there again :)

Also at the time of check out, there was a big box with little garbage in it. I threw some trash items in it and the receptionist started to yell. I told him that i thought it to be a dustbin, thats why threw here. But he was not listening to me and was in his own zone. The only plus thing at this hotel is the parking and secondly its close to miami beach. I guess thats the biggest advantage of staying in this hotel. Over all good experience and i would request the receptionist to be little polite to their guests. Thanks.!

The room and property was as shown in the pictures. The bed was comfy. The blankets a bit outdated but goes with the theme/history of the aged hotel. Newly renovated, good a/c, free WiFi, and lots of channels for television watchers. The place was clean and in a very convenient location to shopping, the beach, the Fillmore Theater and the Convention Center. I would absolutely stay again.

This is somewhat of a hidden gem in South Beach. It is an old property, the front desk even had old-school mailboxes for each room and you have a real physical key. Art deco, unique vibe. Very affordable for the area, on site free parking, 2 blocks from the beach, and walk to shopping and entertainment.

You get what you pay for, but some things need to be better. A/C unit blows all the time nonstop so it's never silent in the room. One of our chairs in the room was broken and we put it outside the door for it to be replaced but they just took it and did not replace it. Hotel is famous with having a parking lot but as the receptionist admitted, they have 32 units in the building and 17 parking spots so one late night when we came back we could not park in the premises. Location and the price is great, so you get what you pay for

They go crazy about the parking there was some parking available but the lady at the front desk made us go park at the closes parking space few streets down. It looks us an hour or longer to be able to check in and by the time we checked in there was no more sunshine to enjoy at the beach. The reason why I choose this hotel was for the parking on the property other wise I could choose a better hotel. We travel all the way from Texas we had to be on traffic for 2 hours by the time we got checked in at the hotel it was late to enjoy the day. This was our only day to spend in Miami the next day we had to leave.

It's a decent 1-star hotel with good customer service -- if it's offered at a 1-star hotel price. But we paid about double that, and that made it unreasonably expensive. I know all about the "dynamic" prices paradigm, but this was way too much. A budget hotel that is cheap in every way (e.g. poor mattresses, unsteady internet, thin walls, very tired furniture, etc.) cannot be charging people 3 or 4-star rates and be expecting good reviews. I understand that there is increased demand during busy periods, but they still can't be surprised if customers conclude they didn't get their money's worth.

Also be aware if you park in their lot you are required to leave your key at the front desk and is stored directly behind the attendant in an open cubby, not secure at all. They said you have to in case THEY have to move your car. Was not comfortable with this policy and wish I would have known prior to booking. Additionally there are some sketchy people walking the lot, Had no idea they were employees/help to move the cones and parking sign so people could enter and exit. This property has potential, but until they get their cleaning under control I will not stay here again or recommend it not matter how low the price or free parking.

The style is very different, with the walls covered with figures and weird painting, and that´s fine! But the problem is that there are many features in very bad mainteinance condition and we feel a lack of interest of the administration to spend some money and solve this. The elevator keeps breaking and the door always stays open since the hinges are 100 years old. Same thing about the room bathroom, with wasted/worn out shower comands, tiles and sink. There is no interest in making the guest stay any more pleasurable. We asked for maintenance and instead of having our requests attended, we got indiference and a very unfrendly attitude from the administration.

OMG!! I just got home today from Miami and I have to say I LOVED this place. If you want a hotel with character, this is the place. It's not super fancy but it is weird, cute, interesting, and oh so decorative!!....and I love interesting!! The front desk lady was very nice and we arrived hella early but they held our bags for a $5 fee, which wasn't bad at all. We were due to stay at this hotel We travelled over to Orlando and arrived only to be let down with our assistance which meant we couldn't take the trip to Miami - I contacted hotels.com immediately to let them know and tried to cancel the booking - we were giving 48 hours notice so couldn't see the problem I was told that I needed to have cancelled before midnight on the day before we arrived to avoid charges. We couldn't have cancelled then even if we'd known we couldn't go because we were travelling from England that day/night. I explained the extenuating circumstances and how it was impossible for us to get there without assistance due to our health issues and they agreed to contact the hotel They told me the hotel didn't care and they have since taken full payment for the room even though we gave plenty of notice I didn't stay here so can't say what the accomodation was like but I am disgusted by the management and their treatment of us as disabled travellers. Had we not given them any notice of cancellation I might be able to understand, but to blatantly disregard our needs and hold us to the letter is cruel and insensitive, hence the scathing review

Check-in was a bit unconventional as I arrived late and had to wait for the staff to open the door after providing my reservation details. While this process is understandable for security reasons, it was a bit inconvenient. The use of a traditional key instead of a key card was a bit old-fashioned but manageable. The room’s door only has a lock on the handle, which was a bit less secure than expected. Although there is an elevator, I didn’t need it since my room was on the first floor. However, be aware that there are a few steps leading up to the first floor. The air conditioning worked perfectly, which was a relief. Unfortunately, the sheets in the room were different from what was shown in the pictures and were not very comfortable, but they were still acceptable. I also encountered several issues: the phone and one of the two lamps in the room were nonfunctional, and neither the TV nor the Wi-Fi was working during my stay. On a positive note, the restroom was clean and everything there was in good working order. The room did have a table, fridge, ceiling fan, and microwave, which were useful. One downside was the noise outside the room around 9 a.m. since you can hear everything going on in the hallway, which disrupted the otherwise peaceful environment. Overall, the room was satisfactory for my needs as a place to rest, but improvements in amenities and maintenance could make the stay more pleasant.

The hotel room itself was clean, AC worked great, but was loud, and the location is alright. The elevator is almost too small for my rollator walker to even fit in let alone turn, it takes several minutes for it to move between floors, it also requires you to open a regular door to then walk through the elevator doors to get in and has no push button for disabled patrons. The elevator will also get stuck on what ever floor its on if someone leaves the first door even slightly open. The entry doors do not have push buttons to open for disabled patrons. When you check in they have no signs or things on their bookings that show they "require you to leave your car keys with them at the desk so they can access your vehicle's any time to move them around as needed." They also make you sign a disclosure saying that they are not liable for damage to your car or property. After disagreeing about leaving our keys with them because insurance would be our problem if they backed into someone else they told us to remove our car from the property if we did not like those terms, and also kept insisiting it was listed in their parking terms. (As of right now it still is not listed). Im sure this hotel is great for able bodied patrons that don't mind leaving their car in the hands of other's, but for us it was a bad experience. Their idea of free breakfast is an open box of donuts or small muffins that anyone can sneeze and touch. We also paid $60 for parking in a garage instead of on sight.

AWFUL DO NOT STAY HERE! Staff is extremely rude. Banged on my hotel toom door at 7am in the morning demanding that I move my car or give me my keys so he can move it. He was very rude about it! On top of that, the remote/tv did not work at all. I asked for a new remote or batteries and was stuck with the same remote, so no tv the entire time. Also, on our second day front door did not lock at all, so it was an unsafe room. The elevator is extremely slow and we never used it. The room was in dire need of updating and felt dirty. People who read my reviews know me for my harsh criticism but this place is a weird one for me to be hard on because of the hidden benefits. For instance: free parking, in Miami that is worth $35 a night, perfect location and a really friendly staff. The rooms and hotel is really worn and dated but it was a great place to lay your head. No cable TV or USB charging ports in the room but the internet is good enough to mirror your phone up to the TV. It is worth a stay if you are on a budget or just cheap like me.
