Reviews
The hotel has a great location and friendly staff, but some guests have reported issues with cleanliness and maintenance. Rooms are described as outdated and in need of repair, with common complaints including broken appliances, dirty bathrooms, and uncomfortable beds.
- Great location
- Friendly staff
- Cleanliness issues
- Outdated rooms and appliances
- 3/5
Needs work on the hotel rooms, Especially the bathrooms. Also the hidden fees are bad. Everything else was pretty decent. But the stay wasn’t worth the price.
- 4/5
Location was fantastic but an accommodations looked remodeled “enough”. Nobody goes to south beach to sleep but my only complaint would be the noise all night from outside and the neighbors through the walls. Still a great stay and the price was great. Just fair warning
- 5/5
Great stay, right in the middle of everything!
- 3/5
This is NOT a family friendly hotel, it’s a party hotel and the swimming pool was very small and was at the Adult ONLY beach club with music blazing all night. Also be prepared to spend $50 a night for parking and a $49 per person resort fee per day. Check your bill because Hotels.com charges you a resort fee and the hotel also bills you a resort fee. Location was perfect but again, hotels.com should advertise as a hotel for adults and not family!!!

Good

No microwave, no Ice machine, and no business center. The staff was nice, the room was clean and the AC worked. The continental breakfast was a dry croissant and coffee. Don’t go there for the free breakfast.
- 2/5
Disappointing
- 3/5
What I liked most about the property was location and cleanliness. Most of the staff was extremely accommodating, friendly, and helpful. One female staff member was extremely rude. The rooms do not come with a microwave. When we asked the female front desk person about receiving or using a microwave, she never gave us eye contact and stated, No we don’t have microwaves for guests… we asked again, because we know that when you request a microwave they deliver it to the room upon request. She has a very rude demeanor and stated, No and shrugged her shoulders. When she left for her shift, the next employee was helpful and brought the microwave to our room with no issues. Also, guests can not get their own ice and must go to the front desk to get some.
- 2/5
The hotel was run down in general & had very low quality amenities
- 4/5
It was a clean room with good air conditioning with the humidity. They also provide you with a little bit of supplies for showering such as body wash, shampoo, conditioner, even lotion as well. Staffs were very kind and respectful as for conscience. Parking was a little pricey because it had to be parked with valet but it was good anyways.
- 4/5
This was a nice place to stay right on the beach and around lots of shopping and restaurants and bars to have fun
- 1/5
Staff sprayed something to make smell better that made it worse allergies kick in. Had to check out and get other arrangements
- 1/5
It was at the very top of a hill away from town, they only gave us one towel per person. It took 30 minutes to walk to the beach and they don't even have beach towels or anything to facilitate. Each room is on a separate floor with multiple steps. I would suggest staying here only if it's the only place in town.
- 5/5
nice quiet and very helpful on anything you ask for

Incredibly disappointed with this hotel. I booked here to be close to the beach for a one night stay before getting on a cruise with my husband, daughter, and mom. I paid for an upgraded room to have 2 queen beds and I called ahead and asked for a rollaway bed for my daughter so grandma could have her own bed. They said one would be set up ahead of time, no problem. At check in, my upgraded room was not available, and I was told that they haven’t had rollaway beds in years. I did not receive a discount on the room- they just waived the “resort fee” which was an extra cost not mentioned in the booking. The room was sparse and run down - think cracks in the walls, chipping paint, a slanted toilet that looked like it belonged in a prison cell. The walls were paper thin - we heard and felt every beat of the South Beach Friday night scene until about 2am. The AC unit didn’t function consistently and we alternated between sweating and shivering. The included “breakfast” in the morning was a coffee and a single plain croissant. They let someone sleep on the couch in the lobby for the entire night- not sure what her deal was, but she seemed to have planned this as she had her own blanket. The only upsides were the proximity to the beach and a playground, which my daughter and I walked to in the morning, and that the hotel held our luggage after checkout when we left to get real food and kill time before our cruise boarding window. Grateful that our stay was only one night.
- 5/5
I love staying there!
- 4/5
A/C really good. Room is very small, but adequate. However, there is no where to get ready without someone waiting in the lobby for the other.
- 5/5
I've stayed here on a few occasions, always a good experience.

Terrible all around
- 1/5

Great location!!!! Very central to everything!!!
- 4/5
Staff was amazing and very helpful with all our questions. They made sure to let us know what all was included with the resort fees
- 5/5
Convenient
- 3/5
Clean but very old and outdated.
- 1/5
My experience was not good booked for queen double bed room got full , sink stopped up , no working phone , tv not working had to get moved to another room an upgrade thanks to Joseph at front desk he’s excellent by the way made sure n did his best to accommodate! Got to suite room AC was not working which they had a maintenance man in our room females by the way working on it while we’re trying get ready for an event just unsatisfied n inconvenienced period
- 3/5
But the hotel is subpar. They charge you a resort fee and there is no resort. The pool is on the other sister property and extremely tiny with no chairs. We had no hot water for showers! Stairs to enter building (not ADA compliant). Small elevator inside. Breakfast was one coffee and one croissant. No juice if you didn't drink coffee.
- 1/5
Room was tiny and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the room that I thought I booked. Hotel wasn’t modern like photos and the room didn’t have a bed like it said it would or anything.
- 4/5
Bien limpio y muy atentos el personal
- 5/5
Everything was great - free drinks plus an upgraded room - we will be back!
- 4/5
Some staff is good. Some don't care. We stayed here total of a week so I got a good sample of what's its like. Saw 2 different rooms before and after cruise and our other room has a broken safe. All and all could be worst but it can also be better.
- 5/5
Great place and helpful
- 1/5
Would never recommend to no one. It had no where to place our clothing. It had a small closet only. No ice makers on any of the floors. They had no hot water for showers. No dresser. The whole building only had 4 microwaves and a few fridges. No laundry for cleaning your clothing. Had to ask front end for ice. For it to be pricey I would take my stay somewhere other the this building. DO NOT GO. GO AT YOUR OWN RISK.
- 4/5
Very good
- 3/5
Mosquitos in the room, toilet was broken but they fixed it right away.
- 5/5
The staff was amazing very welcoming and accommodating. They took really good care of us. I celebrated my birthday there. Nice staff, clean rooms and fun location.
- 5/5
Great location, convenient to have a restaurant and bar adjacent. Also nice to have towel service for the beach & valet parking.
- 5/5
Clean room, air conditioning & close to everything
- 4/5
We were told about the chairs included in your resort fee but we weren’t told it was only 2 chairs, no matter how many were on your reservation, so we had to pay for one. The chairs are also about 5 blocks down on the beach, so kinda a far walk. Staff were helpful and quick response time to requests!
- 4/5
Loved the location! The place was comfortable and clean. Godfrey at the front desk was wonderful and friendly and helpful! We hope to go back!
- 3/5
Clean room and smelled good. Did not have refrigerator or microwave, you have to request it and they will deliver it if they have it available. Never got the microwave. Refrigerator came but they just dropped it on the inside of the room. They didnt bother plugging it in or cleaning it. The hotel is in prime location easy walk to resturants and beach. You do get free beach chairs but you have to walk from 10 street to 15 street to get them. Overall good experience.
- 5/5
staff was very friendly.
- 4/5
Nice and clean. However, no refrigerator or microwave. Staff was excellent.
- 1/5
My ceiling leaked water the entire time we were there in the bathroom was flooded You were promised discounts, but I have yet to receive them
- 4/5
Great Location Bathroom was dated, complimentary drink was a frozen cocktail that we don’t drink. Didn’t like that it was limited to just that selection. Would be good to have used on soft drinks and water
- 5/5
Will stay here again !
- 4/5
Water temp inconsistent. Also feel resort fee should be optional, for I did not utilize most of them. I did enjoy the quiet. The location and grounds were great. Staff were very helpful, friendly and polite. Would definitely visit again despite my minor grievances.
- 2/5
Excellent location however the room had a very foul smell, tv did not work & could not be fixed, & room only cleaned once in 3 days. Would not recommend
- 5/5
AC kept the room cool so close to everything perfect for the night
- 1/5
Dirty. Smelly. Friendly Staff
- 1/5
room had moldy smell, sheets and pillows were not clean when I arrived. It was extreme odor so I went down to desk, they were very friendly and helpful and had me some new sheets and pillows within 30 minutes.
- 3/5
Great location, beds were clean and comfortable, staff were accomodating. It could use some upgrades and some TLC.
- 3/5
The property is located in South Beach and is a perfect location. Literally one minute to the beach and Ocean Drive is right there. However, the hotel is very old and it certainly shows its age inside. The minute we walked into our room the smell of mould and dampness and very bad smells hit us in the face. Our party had a total of four rooms and two of the rooms smelled that way. Two of the rooms had to contact the front desk in the evening to get towels as none were provided. The person at the front desk told one of our party that if they wanted room service they should go down in the morning and ask for it.
- 3/5
You are staying here for the location and that’s it. It’s in a great spot and is very lively. It’s not a luxury hotel. The rooms smell, the bed was rock hard but it worked for a night.
- 3/5
Website needs to be updated
- 1/5
Clear evidence of bed bugs. Understaffed, took forever to check in. Pics of the hotel online when booking looked great but upon arrival it’s dilapidated, old and dirty. AVOID.
- 5/5
Yes, in overall good
- 5/5
The location is very convenient for a night life !!! A few blocks from everything ! Definitely I will come back I
- 2/5
The only good thing about this place is location of hotel it was not clean and only nice person was the morning staff
- 4/5
The room was very large and clean. The location was great. The staff was excellent. The only downside was the beach access was 5 blocks away, not the closest spot to the hotel. Also, it was a party spot. So not the quietest for light sleepers, but hey it's Miami. For me and my husband, it was not too much of a problem. We just stayed 1 night after a cruise. Fun old historic south beach hotel in the heart of the action. Maybe no pool. Not sure.
- 1/5
Room we stayed in got flooded from the rain, we were in top floor. Next door people to the second room played very loud music past 10 pm. Toilet ball has to be flushed 4 times to work. No place to place your tooth brush in the bathrooms, and no tables or couches in room to place a backpack. Parking is about $50 a day.
- 4/5
Location is great. It’s the “quieter” sister to the night-club-thumping-bass-dance-party-all-day hotel across the alleyway. The place is showing a little wear, but the rooms are nice. Our AC worked well, the room was quiet. The staff were really friendly. Other reviewers have called out the dirty hallway carpet - yeah, it’s old and stained. But it’s a beach destination and party area - not a big deal. The rooms were clean.
- 2/5
Not a good stay. Charged an extra $300 for parking and resort fees above the Hotels.com price. Room was not well taken care of. Toilet and refrigerator didn’t work well. Television was only very basic cable without any ESPN. Monica on property, had to go to hotel next door. Had to be frisked to walk into Hotel Bar. Do not stay here.
- 5/5
Exceptional
- 2/5
I enjoyed that it was right in walking distance to everything. I loved the restaurant that was downstairs. Where do I start. The sink wouldn’t drain the water, the toilet wouldn’t flush, you had to press it 3 times for it to go down. When we got in the floors had debris on them. The bottom of my feet was dirty from walking on the floors. No fridge to put your stuff in. No microwave to heat food up. Would I stay there again. Noooo

The room served its purpose. It’s basically to sleep only. Definitely needs some upgrading with a mirror, microwave and mini fridge. Many plumbing issues as well.
- 3/5
Room- However, room pictures are very deceiving. We were 4 people in a room delax, 2 queen beds and could not move. I messaged the hotel immediately booking late arrival, 4 people (3 adults) but one disabled, uses a walker. Couldn’t fit two suitcases in the space. Bathroom was awful, looks renovated in the pictures but very very old faucet in the tub. Toilets need to flash twice. Sink big crack between the wall, looks like almost falling. When we checked in late there was only 2 sets of towels we all wanted to shower and from desk struggled to get us two more sets. Took her over an hour. That should not have happened. Manager- Charlie the manager who I spoke to next day told me all room are the same but it’s not true. I saw the room across from us and it was much more specious. He could accommodate us next day. Especially when I mention my mom uses a walker and it is really hard to maneuver in this room. I’ve been around the world and stayed at all Kind of hotels but first time that was not accommodated for my request by a manger. I will for sure never book at a hotel rated below 8.
- 5/5
Perfect location to the beach and the strip allowing for a park and walk situation while we were there for a night before our cruise - great restaurant for brunch attached as well as a fantastic bar attached to the sister hotel on the strip The parking was a bit of a situation but I think that is the area

Good location. Lots to do nearby. Walking distance to restaurants, the beach, the boardwalk and shopping.

Cleaning staff were keen but very noisy in hallways whilst we were still “getting up “ ! Hot water for shower took 15 mins to come through ….
- 4/5
Enjoyed staying here it was a great location for the CrossFit event on the beach. Didn’t use the sister hotel pool so can’t comment on that.
- 5/5
Great staff, nice and clean room!
- 1/5
The bed was comfy and location is great It took over 30 mins to check in with only one member of staff on the reception and a huge line of about 10 people waiting to check in. The corridor floors were full of stains everywhere The room floor was also dirty and dusty I got locked outside along side others for over 30 minutes on Monday night because the key card wouldn’t work on the outside door and we couldn’t get through to reception.

The staff, especially Godfried, were very helpful and friendly. The hotel also offers a secure luggage locker where they can store your bags until your room is ready, or after checkout until you are ready to leave. Its location is very convenient, situated between the beach and the main shopping streets. While the hotel does provide access to amenities at their sister property next door, guests must be 21 or older to use them.
- 2/5
Staff are nice. Building is dated including old carpet and not as clean as I would like. There’s also no pool despite one being listed. It’s at the sister property next door and is adults only. This was extremely disappointing as it was a selling point for us with kids.

They advertise free towels and chairs as part of the "resort fees". The towels were easy, but for the chairs you had to walk about 6 blocks, even though the beach was only 1 block away. The pool they advertised was in another hotel's bar area, so not great for relaxation. The rooms were in good condition. One room's floor was soft near the bathroom entrance. We asked to move after the first night due to the next room watching TV at full volume starting at 6 am then having a loud argument. The second room was much better and in better condition. We still had a good time but will pick a different place next time

Great location ! Amazing staff and nice room. Our flight left late and we were able to leave out bags as we explored. I would stay here again

Room was dirty, bed moved all over the place and the mattress was very uncomfortable, toilet didn't flush correctly and I was doubled charged the wrong amount. Truly the worst expeirence I have ever encountered. I even cut my trip short by one day cause of the conditions.

We wished we could have checked in earlier, but it was a busy weekend. We had a wonderful stay in Miami Beach and Essex House was great. The room was clean, and the staff were very friendly. Resort fee came with a breakfast snack, beach towels, free chairs on the beach, and drinks at the Clevelander. Family-friendly as well. It was also very affordable. Amazing location.

The front desk staff was very helpful & nice. However, there was always a long wait b/c it was a one man show. They were checking people in, storing luggage, retrieving luggage, getting beach towels, calling valet,& handling other issues by themselves. The room was dirty (I.e., dust everywhere, floor w/ debris, not swept). The renovations were cheaply done. The bed made noises when you moved & mattress dipped. The hotel was more like a motel; an art deco holiday inn. Location was great, but not worth the rate for the room.

The room was large which was nice. When we got there the front desk staff said “oh you booked a suite! Good luck getting the luggage up the stairs because there is no elevator.” No offer to help at all. By day two we asked for extra water to which we got “CVS is down the road”. When we asked for ice we got attitude. The bed was not secured so my partner hurt his leg on it. Overall just a cheap crappy bed. Looks good in pictures but that’s it.

The room absolutely did not look like it did in the online pictures. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting. We purposely stayed out long enough the one night we stayed there and left as soon as we could the following morning. For a boutique, small hotel, the rooms should have been much cleaner and up to date. Would never stay there again.

Rooms are small. Halls way carpets super dirty. No amenities here even thought your charged a resort fee.. No ice. They brought us ice in a rusty bucket. $40 to park. No parking in site. Check in guy said maybe 3 words to us at check in. Location is great. Nice lobby area to sit in. Beds were comfy. No cold water in the sink or shower which is wierd cause its usually the other way. So scalding hot showers.

Location is perfect. The room was a nice size. It was very dusty and the toilet was like a public restroom toilet and it had to be flushed twice. The plumbing was not up to par. The location was the best part.

At check in, your representative, Godfrey was wonderful. He was so friendly, helpful and went out of his way to make sure our check in experience and stay was great. Essex House has a fantastic location but employees like Godfrey make the stay that much better.

I chose the bigger room - a suite, in fact, since I like to be in a bigger space when on vacation. That was a great idea! Everything was just great. Loved it!

Excellent, beautiful hotel. Only one thing I didn't like was there was no food or store with in walking distance and the hotel shuttle will only take you with in 3 miles from the hotel to find food.
- 5/5
Good room
- 5/5
Front desk was great!
- 1/5
I reserved a deluxe room, two queen beds and when I got into the room, they were double beds. I called the front desk and they said they were “hotel queens” which was just a term they made up for double beds. I stayed at the Kent two blocks down the night before and they had real queen size beds.
- 1.5/5
The room was spacious and clean. Great location. The front desk staff were nice. Staff were not attentive. Our toilet wouldn’t flush and I had to ask twice to get it looked at. Then it took 6 hours for someone to show up. I asked for towels twice and they never came. I had to go to front desk myself and ask for beach towels so we could shower. Our toilet never got fixed. The maintenance guy said he was sorry, it’s just low water pressure and we will have to flush the toilet more often. Sometimes it took 7 flushes to work. Completely unacceptable and unsanitary. I would never stay there again, even if it were free.

The staff checking me were acting like scammers. They chargerd an additional Fee. They did not provide information on parking, pool hours or pool location, nor laundry. They were so concerned with that extra fee that they stopped checking other people.

Room is not clean, especially pillows. Doesn’t have self-parking as in description, have to pay more than $100 for 2 nights parking ($52+ per night). However, I have been charged of $182.38. I had to call to ask.

Toilet wouldn't flush. Had to keep calling maintenence. No hot water. Customer service was horrible.

Very Good Location

I traveled with two kids and searched for hotels with swimming pool. Essex House came up with the pool filter, however Essex House does not have a swimming pool - and the adjacent Clevelander pool we supposedly should have access to was for adults only. I suggest "pool" should be removed from the list of amenities when kids are added to the booking, to avoid very disappointed under age travelers!
- 5/5
Very good

Moldy, smelly, nasty sink , shower toilets ...dusty, dirty rooms.
- 2/5
The air conditioned was well, we didn't go to the bar but the coffee station in our room wasn't refilled with regular coffee.

Clean room
- 2/5
First night we had to change to another room because it had a non stop AC leak right by the entrance to the room. Second room was better. I also ordered Dominos pizza on my second night there and the people delivered my pizza to the person in the lobby and they did not inform me. i had to keep calling Dominos and when I went ti the lobby, my pizza was just sitting there cold. They knew it was for my room so they should have called so I can come down and get it asap. That really dissapointed me & my guests!!!!

Great choices for food and drinks and lots to do around the area
- 3/5
The concierge service and location were excellent, but the room itself was disappointing. It wasn’t properly cleaned. There was sand on the floors and even on the bedsheets and the decor felt quite outdated. The entertainment was also underwhelming. We visited during Halloween and expected more variety and excitement, but it fell short of expectations
- 5/5
I absolutely loved my stay at the Essex House Hotel! The room was extremely clean and comfortable, which made my stay so enjoyable. The location is everything—it was so convenient to get around and explore the area. The staff was always so accommodating and friendly, making sure every detail was taken care of. And I have to mention—the shower was a whole experience! The water was perfectly hot with great pressure, which was such a treat after a long day out. Overall, I couldn’t have asked for a better stay. I’d definitely come back and highly recommend the Essex House Hotel to anyone visiting the area! Overall, my stay at the Essex House Hotel was pleasant, but there were a few things that could be improved. I was given room 317, and I noticed that the toilet didn’t flush instantly. It usually took three to four flushes after each use to get a full flush, which was a bit inconvenient. Additionally, the bathroom was quite small—though I understand that’s part of the historic charm and character of the hotel. With a few updates to the plumbing, this room could easily match the high standards the rest of the hotel offers.
- 1/5
Honestly, this was a terrible stay. The hotel is outdated and not well kept. I had two rooms, both had a foul musty odor. The bathrooms were dirty, toilet didn’t work, and the bed sheets made us itch. I was honestly nervous to touch anything or sleep there. Slept fully clothed. I would never stay at this hotel ever in my life nor would I recommend it to anyone. The only con is the area, it’s close to the beach.
- 2/5
We are on a family trip with my two teenager boys. The location is great that close to the beach. However, our restroom door can’t even close. After repot to front desk, we were told there’s no room to change and there’s no any other solution to solve the problem. It was not convenient to us unfortunately.
- 1/5
I still have nit received my $100 deposit back
- 5/5
Excellent
- 4/5
Very low sitting toilets.

Joel at the front desk was awesome. Check in was a breeze and they even let us check in early at no extra charge. It is in a good location with plenty of bars, shops and restaurants nearby. There is plenty of parking garages nearby for 1/2 the price of the valet. The hotel property was nice and the room was small but clean. BUT the rooms (we had 2) were both SUPER MUSTY AND STINKY! We would not be able to sleep at this hotel more then 1 night because of the smell. We have stayed at hotels ON the beach many times before and have never experienced this level of stink and mustyness. The restaurant attached to the hotel had sketch clientele, it was extremely loud (during the day) and the cops were even there at one point. We would not stay here again.
- 2/5

Staff was very pleasant, we had a good stay and painless stay
- 5/5
All went well! Just as expected!!
- 2/5
While my experience at Essex was poor it was made up by accommodating my stay with a much better ending at the Clevlander hotel which i give them. 5 stars Chrissy and her best friend Trini i would recommend the Clevelander if you are looking to beach and enjoy entertainment music like myself .
- 5/5
Omg the staff Joel , Shirlene , and Michelle helped make my stay as pleasurable as possible they went above and beyond to make sure me and my guest needs were met !! Because of them I definitely will be back ! I stayed there a extra week because I enjoyed it so much
- 3/5
The room was decent nice view but no mini fridge is astounding there is space for one and they chose not to add one the room is also not in the main Clevlander hotel and there not connected but they share all amnesties service was excellent
- 5/5
Perfect location I love the staff the manager Joel was awesome !!! Michelle that works the Clevelander side omg she is the best too !! An I can’t forget about Shirlene !!!! We loved their professionalism an how they went above and beyond to make sure my stay was the best possible I definitely recommend 100000/10 !!! I will be back and soon at that !! The best 2 week hotel stay I’ve every encountered !!
- 1/5
The hot water in the bathroom sink didn't work. Maintenance couldn't get it fixed.
- 5/5
Loved this hotel location is great minutes away from beach all the restaurant.
- 1/5
This place was definitely not what I expected. The room was very. small, the bed was small too. The bathroom had drops of paint everywhere. It looks like they remodeled but put no love into it , even the fake plant in the room hadpaint all over it. There was not a mini fridge in the room. The iron was stained and it almost ruins my dress. There was not counter top in the bathroom which it left no place to set out our stuff . The blow dryer was literally falling aspart. Will not stay there again.
- 5/5
Bose at the front desk is always helpful and greets us with the best customer service
- 5/5
Staff was great. All was clean and comfortable
- 5/5
Property was clean and close to the beach. Expedia’s pictures vs what we actually got totally different photos showed a separate sitting area. When I asked the staff i was told it’s only available for king bed rooms. We had two queens so we didn’t have the extra space we needed.

- 5/5
Great area
- 4/5
Very nice property..
- 4/5
Staff Didn’t get service to clean room however was able to get fresh towels and tissue. Ran out of tissue
- 2/5
The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The air conditioner in the first room was broken, so we had to transfer to another room on the second floor. The room floors were dirty (the washcloth photo shows me walking around to the bathroom after a shower). It is not as modern as they described. It is not handicapped accessible. Would not stay there again.
- 5/5
The property is well located, quiet, good dining around. The staff were really nice.
- 2.5/5
there were no staff at the front desk. Our room was not properly cleaned before our arrival, there was clumps of hair from previous stay.… The room smelled moldy and very humid. The AC would randomly go up to 80, which made the room even more humid.
- 5/5
Joel’s customer service is truly top-tier. He goes above and beyond every single time—whether it’s recommending great local restaurants, extending my stay to make things easier, or personally checking in at my door to ensure everything is perfect. His level of care and dedication is rare, and it’s the reason I’ll never consider staying anywhere else when I’m in South Beach. Joel is not only professional, but he also makes sure every guest feels valued and appreciated—and I know this because I’ve spoken to other guests who have stayed here, and they don’t have enough good words to say about Joel either. He has been with the Essex for a long time, and it shows in the way he represents the hotel with pride and consistency. Employees like Joel are the reason people keep coming back, and I sincerely hope management recognizes the tremendous impact he has on guests like me. Thank you again, Joel, for another outstanding stay. I look forward to seeing you and your team in November!
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, very clean and accomodating.
- 2/5
This is a bit of a party hotel. The bar pool forms part of pool party venue. Which goes on from midday to the early hours. So if you are under 21 or are taking kids you can not use the bar of pool facilities. Staff on check in were ignorant and could barely be bothered to speak to us. Location is good close to beach etc. rooms ok.
- 3/5
The hotel was advertised as having on site self-parking with cost but when we got there, we were advised they only have valet. The front desk rep was cordial and professional. The room itself was ok but had a faint smell of urine. The AC was very loud. The location is great, close to everything on south beach, even Lincoln Rd Mall was walkable.
- 5/5
perfect

- 5/5
great location, props for the upgrade. The place was comfortable, breakfast was confusing. The floors had sand on them.
- 3/5
ok
- 2/5
Had a nice room but the tv and phone did not work. There was no remote to the tv at all. The hot water worked occasionally. When we first got in the room 2 out for 4 coffee pods where used and in the container, had to go down and tell the front desk. First night not hot water, told the front desk, someone came. Next morning again no hot water.
- 5/5
my stay here was very random I needed a place to stay with my daughter just one night after coming off a carnival cruise ship and the condo I was supposed to stay in was occupied by someone else so I booked this place minutes before checking in. the front desk guy was so nice he upgraded our room saw how stressed I was and put me right in my room at 9:30am even though check in was not until 4. very pleased with the service cleanliness and comfort of this place if I ever visit Miami and need a place to stay I would definitely book this location again.
- 5/5
Bed was perfect lots of restaurants around hotel
- 5/5
It’s a really good location rooms good the corridors could do with a bit of a clean even if they got the carpet cleaned. Also would prefer large wall attached shower gel etc as the containers they provide are small and not very eco friendly Complimentary water and beach towels etc The spot is amazing and they gave us drinks vouchers for the sister hotel which were really good
- 5/5
Location is perfect if you want to have a great time by Ocean Drive & the restaurants near the hotel.
- 4/5
Its a much older building and some things are not as new or as clean as I am use to but overall not a bad stay and is what I expected.
- 4/5
the Rooms and bathroom need to be updated, and each room should have more seating
- 5/5
No pool
- 5/5
The room was very clean and spacious. The room was very beautiful. Customer service was excellent. The only thing I did like was the pool. They did to update.
- 5/5
The area is very convenient to everything!
- 2/5
There was a hole in the ceiling of our closet. The shower curtain didn’t even touch the bottom of the floor. Bed had hair before we even sat down. Phone didn’t work and had mold on it. Tv remote didn’t work.

- 2.5/5
The fact that our room was ready when we got there
- 4/5
Location was perfect to access the beach and food The price I paid was to much, we did get switched to a suite.
- 5/5
I really enjoyed my stay, great location. The staff were incredibly nice…..
- 3/5
Ok
- 3/5
I had an awesome stay here ..the only thing i can say that was upsetting was my room was barley cleaned every day sanndy floors no effort in cleaning the room thoroughly. They also didnt take the tip money I left every day.
- 5/5
Great
- 3/5
The air-conditioning did work well, but the room felt constantly moist and had a strong, musty odor—almost like urine. It made the stay uncomfortable despite the updated surfaces. Another concern was the elevator, which didn’t seem to function properly. The next day it was under repair, confirming my suspicion that something was wrong. It was unsettling to know that it could have been unsafe. On a positive note, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and I want to be clear that they were not the issue. Unfortunately, the condition of the room and the overall musty, outdated feel of the hotel made it hard to justify the cost. In my opinion, the value simply wasn't there.
- 5/5
It was actually quieter than I expected and Valerie, the front desk clerk was exceptionally helpful and pleasant.
- 2/5
Cons: The pictures of the rooms that they advertise are NOT from the Essex: they are from the Clevelander. We were definitely disappointed. The hallways are extremely antiquated. The rugs need to be pulled and have a slight smell to them. The rooms are decent but the bathrooms are in dire need of an upgrade. They are also very small. The rooms do NOT have a fridge. The hotel has no vending machine. There is no common ice machine. You have to get the ice from the front desk. Some of the rooms don’t have a full length mirror. I know this because we had to be moved. Our first room had a leaking AC, no full size mirror. The second room had a mirror, but no toilet pressure. There are no rooms with a dresser. It’s a pain in the ass to not have a mirror to see what you look like or a dresser to put your things on. The room doors don’t close behind you. You think it’s closed and it’s actually open. Would not stay here again, especially with the amount of lodging available nearby.
- 4/5
Easy check in, close to action on Ocean Drive
- 4/5
I like convenience if being close to the beach and the wonderful staff. The view of the room was great however it smelled of mildew and appeared outdated. Otherwise my stay was okay for the price.
- 4/5
Very Clean And Staff Was Great
- 2/5
Wasn’t nothing like the pictures

We stayed hust fir one night, but it was a nice stay. We were traveling on a vacation. We were able to get a late check out… and it was amazing, counted that time our flight was.

Stay: July 7–9, 2025 | Family of 6, 2 Rooms (1st and 2nd Floor) Our family of six stayed at the Essex House Hotel in Miami for two nights, and while the location and staff were highlights, several issues impacted our experience. Pros: The staff was friendly and accommodating, making early check-in possible (though one room incurred a $50 fee). The hotel’s location in South Beach is fantastic—just a two-minute walk to the beach, restaurants, and the Art Deco Museum, making it ideal for exploring. The rooms were clean, with comfortable beds and minimal but functional furniture. Free Wi-Fi, bottled water, and other resort amenities were nice, though a daily resort fee applied. Cons: Despite the prime location, the neighborhood was extremely noisy until 1 a.m., even on weekdays, forcing us to run the loud air conditioning to drown it out. While the bedrooms felt recently renovated, the hallways were neglected, with worn carpets and visible stains. The AC units in both rooms were annoyingly loud, disrupting sleep. Most concerning, the bathrooms had no ventilation, and the water was a major issue—only one faucet worked, and it delivered only scalding hot water. Overall: The Essex House Hotel has a great location and friendly service, but the noisy surroundings, outdated hallways, and serious bathroom issues were disappointing. It’s a decent option for those prioritizing location, but families seeking reliable amenities may want to consider alternatives
- 5/5
No
- 5/5
Place is a little old but i imagine that all those building around are the same , employees were very helpful and friendly and you are in the middle of south beach so a lot of dinning option 10 min or less walk to the beach 5 min walk to Ocean Drive St … we enjoy our stay
- 2/5
I had a terrible experience at Essex House by Clevelander. First of all, their behavior was extremely rude when I asked for a water bottle at night – the staff seemed annoyed and unhelpful. The bathroom was very dirty, and shockingly small – barely enough space to move around. The lobby and carpets throughout the hotel were unclean and smelled bad, which immediately gave a poor impression. As for breakfast, it was a joke – they only offered one coffee and one croissant, with no other options at all. Very disappointing for a place that advertises itself as a good hotel. Overall, it was not a pleasant stay, and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Definitely not worth the money.
- 1/5
Be very careful with staff and management. We arrived at hotel around 1230pm. Check was at 4pm. We asked if our room was ready could we check in earlier. Staff said yes, it's $50 to check in early and you could pay room with cc but we need the $50 in cash. We paid the $50 in cash and he checked us in. He took us to a room that we did not book on line. We booked a garden suite. They tried to give us a regular room claiming it's their suites. I declined that room and asked for a refund and my $50 back. Once I told him that not the room we booked, he didn't believe me. He asked if I could show him proof because expedia be advertising false pictures. I pulled up my booking then showed him. He told the manager she did so book garden suite. Manager walked us to another room and asked was this the room you booked. I said yes!! Manager stated well the room is not ready now (to my eyes the room looked like it had been cleaned already). He said I will call you when it's ready. When we finally checked in I notice the door did not close all the wa, the bathroom doors did not close for privacy. We had to prop our suitcases behind the door to keep it closed. There was no ice machine on property and there was a roach crawling in bed. We traveled 5 hours to celebrate our anniversary and was not happy with the staff trying to get extra money for themselves and not feeling safe in room and area.

Great location
- 5/5
Great staff. Very accommodating. Location is excellent. Easy to get in and out of South beach. It is a loud area surrounding the hotel.
- 5/5
Everything was convenient and the 3rd shift staff was helpful
- 5/5
The front desk associate, Dimitri was outstanding! He was so helpful, patient and VERY kind. We need more young black men like him in the hospitality positions to help customers feel safe! Thank you again Dimitri from the NYC girlies!
- 5/5
Front desk clerk Charlene was truly amazing!!!!!
- 5/5
Hotel was amazing, stuff was amazing! The atmosphere was definitely a vice!! This hotel was in the middle of everything and was walking distance!!
- 3/5
Now these were the issues we had: 1. Broken toilet ( it was very hard to flush and the toilet seat was a little off. 2). We still have not received our Deposit 3. Room was not cleaned the 2nd night (bed was not made, we still had the same dirty towels in the room, the 1 of the shower knobs broke off (we reported it). Our coffee machine was broke (it was replaced). 4. I reserved 2 Queen bed and got 2 twin beds. Bed size can be higher so I paid for 2 Queen bed. Again, if these issues are fixed this would be a awesome Hotel but I had to give average Stars because of it.
- 5/5
it was a great location and in the middle of south beach. It was connected to the Clevelander that had all the entertainment options.
- 1/5
The property is gross and needs an upgrade. The elevator is really tiny and can only fit 4 people but only 2 people with luggage. The carpet is disgusting with lots of stains and the room sheets were dirty as well with stains. The staff was friendly and the location is convenient to many places like bars and food to go to but my overall experience at the hotel was gross. And the toilet did not flush.
- 2/5
Not the place to stay if you want quiet. Staff is very nice but the area around this hotel is party central. If you are into that, then this is the place for you. Families with kids probably want to look elsewhere.
- 5/5
Great location

The girl need major upgrades never any hot water. It’s not a bright hotel the rooms smell bad.
- 4/5
I stayed in a suite this time as it was worth the extra couple of dollars. I would definitely stay in a suite again here if it’s available.
- 2/5
Very loud! The rooms and bathrooms are very dated, no mini fridge in the rooms!
- 5/5
Guest service was exceptional Demetrius(I think that’s his name) and 2 other guest service members were great!

The Essex was nice, the only downfall is that the building is old and need renovations.

Perfect location to shops bars clubs and beach access! The walls of the rooms are pretty thin so just know you can hear everything. But very clean and fun.

It was old and quaint. To dark.

The photos that are shown are nothing like this in person. When we first arrived and went to our room, the room was dirty; there was hair in the tub, sink, and back of the toilet. There were used press-on fingernails on the floor. I was given a second room, and it still wasn't clean to my liking. The whole place gave motel. It was to the point that I went to Walgreens and bought my own pillowcases. The beds weren't dirty, but I was freaked out and uncomfortable at that point. The carpets in the hallway were disgustingly dirty. If you're looking for luxury, this place is not it at all. The only positive aspect of it is the location. If it weren't for that, I would have canceled my reservation and booked somewhere else.

No microwave or refrigerator in rooms.

The carpet is extremely dirty!!!! The first room they put us in 322. It smelled like mowed water. It smelled horrible then they changed the room from 322 to 325 and that room had bugs on the bed underneath the mattress on the wall on the chair so we had to end up leaving the hotel and we didn’t go to bed until 7 o’clock in the morning trying to get another room. The elevator seemed like it’s going to break down any minute when you’re riding it. Please do not stay at the exes house Clevelander disgusting nasty. It needs to be torn out. How are they still in business and also wanna charge a resort fee

AC will wake you up every 45 min at night. They make you pay a surprise resort fee of $38 but the service are scum

It wasn’t all that the pictures put it to be

I liked the welcome drink and you can store your bags. The hotel was very clean and staff friendly. Lots of things to do in walking distance. Beach food stores and night life

I stayed at Essex House because i was there to meet up with a friend from chicago. Unfortunately he didnt make it so i was alone in Miami. I had a blast! Airshow was the best I've ever seen. Loved the Clevelander after dark. Food was great! Hotel walking distance to Ocean Dr. Hot spots. The Palace was an amazing time! Valerie at the front desk was very nice in accomodating my stay longer so i could continue to enjoy my time in Miami ❤️ I will definately be back!

We were in rm 308. The water pressure was almost nonexistent. Tub was VERY slippery & unlevel! Toilet was the correct height for a toddler. Only ice machine accessible to guests wasn’t working. We weren’t TOLD the ice machine wasn’t working upon check in. I went down to the ice machine & discovered it wasn’t working & then went to the front desk to inform them, the lady cut me off with a “I know it isn’t working. Yeah, I know the machine isn’t working. That’s what we have a house man for.” I went back to my room to wait for the house man to bring ice. He brought it in a metal bucket that I had NO idea if it was clean because it didn’t have a plastic bag protecting the ice. The deadbolt door lock was a struggle to get it to secure. The connected room to our room had guests whom I had to call noise complaints on 3 times not including the time I spoke to them personally. The 2 USB charging ports in the lamp didn’t work. No refrigerator. The TV never connected to the streaming services. Completely unsatisfactory stay for any amount of money.

Não gostei do atendimento dos recepcionistas homens, os das mulheres foram sempre bons. Tive muita dificuldade com estacionamento e muito por conta do mau acessoramento dos recepcionistas.

Valerie was excellent. The individual who checked us out was also great. Superb service.

Nice clean hotel, walk to beach and eatery.

Toilets barely flush. No hot water for the shower! No microwave or refridgerator. Only good thing about Essex is the location

Very tacky lookin toilet broken elevator sound an work like it about to breakdown

Great price for the location! Right in the middle of everything happening at South Beach, would definitely recommend for the location! They say that your keys work to access the Clevelander amenities but mine never did and I had to get someone at Clevelander to let me in anytime I wanted to use the pool or rooftop bar. Not a huge deal, maybe just a fluke with my key card. Still would recommend based on price and location and would stay again!

this hotel was super accommodating to last minute changes & any additional requests. can’t speak highly enough about the staff! they were super kind & helpful. I will say however, our room wasn’t in the best condition, at least the condition we expected. our bathroom had a continuous smell of vomit … would not go away at all. also, quite a few electrical outlets did not work & the bed sheets weren’t very comfortable. if you’re looking for convenience, this is a great hotel. but I would keep expectations low as far as the quality of the rooms :/

So i packed my stuff up and went downstairs for nothing. There was also two towels with yellow stains on them. Then they did come the next day but it happened again & at this point i couldn't be bothered with calling again. The hallway carpet needs to be shampoo badly. The room size was ok. The staff was good too. The hotel was basically an upgraded motel. I personally wouldn't stay there again. There is entertainment downstairs and they gave a drink card for guest.
