Location was excellent. Staff was very friendly. We left our luggage after checkout and collected later on which was such a bonus. Rooms were nice and clean. Had fantastic experience. Location is so near to train station. I would use them again. Nothing.

I liked everything about this hotel, the bed was one of the best I’ve slept in. The location was perfect. There wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this hotel, having to choose I would’ve liked a broom/dust pan. Unavoidable due to construction. I would definitely stay here again.

It was a lot better than I expected for a hotel with shared bathrooms. The hotel itself is gorgeous and in a great location that I really enjoyed. I would’ve liked a small broom and dustpan for my room as the floor naturally gets dirty easily. This did not affect my stay or how comfortable my room was with the bed itself being one of the most comfortable of my many hotel stays.

My stay at The American Hotel was honestly much better than I expected. The hotel has a great connection to the metro, with the station only about a 10-minute walk away, which made getting around Los Angeles really easy without a car. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful throughout my stay, and both the room and bathroom were very clean and well maintained. I also really liked the neighborhood, it has a very charming and relaxed atmosphere. There’s an excellent pizza place nearby, as well as Alfred Coffee, which was perfect for coffee and breakfast in the morning. I came with much lower expectations, so I was genuinely impressed by the whole experience. I would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great value stay in Los Angeles.

The location is very convenient if you're looking to do things nearby in Little Tokyo. The check in process was smooth and I got all of my needs met. There was a nice cold water dispenser and there was all the hotel basics that you needed. Separate restrooms is not my personal preference, but there was at least a mixed gender single restroom that you could use with its own shower. The pillows I had were passable, and the room lighting was awkward but nothing too bad. The table was a little scratched up/stained when I arrived, but not that big of a deal to me.

It was very clean and the location was very convenient too! We got charged 50 USD for deposit without explaining why. After asking why, they told us we had damaged their towels which I don't think is true

Very close to downtown My room reeked of smoke and it was a non smoking facility. Couldn’t get it switched due to it being the last room available. Sadly I was booked for two night and had to book another hostel due to the nasty smell.

We were upgraded upon arrival to a suite with a great view of the downtown skyline. The room was a comfortable queen with an attached living area, a couch, mini fridge, desk, and two tvs. The shared bathrooms were not as big of an issue as I had previously thought they'd be, and we were very comfortable. The location was perfect, as we were trying to stay near my husband's work in little Tokyo. The communal bathrooms could use a little updating as they didn't feel quite as nice as the room. Larger towels and complimentary robes/slippers would have made the stay feel luxury and made trips to and from the bathrooms feel a lot less like a college dorm. I'm not a very large person and my towel didn't wrap fully around my body.

I really enjoyed the cleanliness and the staff, the people in the reception are helpful. It’s shared bathrooms ofc but me and my boyfriend had no issues as they have couple restrooms too. The room was perfect - we didn’t need much. Has a fridge inside if u bring groceries or drinks. they’re doing constructions so the parking lot next door is closed off but u can find street parking our car was fine overnight and we found parking literally right across the street. only thing really missing was a ice machine, we wanted our beer cold lol

Great value, nice location in the middle of the Arts District and close to Little Tokyo. It felt safe and the staff were kind, they let us check in a bit early because our room was available. It's not a fancy hotel but it's clean and safe, good value for the price.

The room is confortable, and the staff very helpful. Near to the metro station. The baths are shared, but very clean all the time. I arrived late (they don`t have 24/7 people in the check in), but the instructions to get inside were very clear.. I missed a microwave in the common area. It would be very helpful. As well a fridge in the room. Both things help a lot when you are traveling.

Very good location. During construction it was a bit hard to walk to, but that should only be temporary. Very comfortable bedding. Bathrooms weren’t in the room. But it was also reflected in the price. It is a good bit cheaper than your typical hotel room, so it’s still very good value for the price.

Everything was nice and clean. Bathrooms weren’t in bad shape. Masuma was nice and helped me get checked in quickly. Wish rooms had a sink inside but it doesn’t really bother me.

I don't mind but shared bathrooms. My kids had questions but I love stuff out of the norm.

For my second time the checkin with Masuma was outstanding. I plan to stay here again. The city of Los Angeles decided to tear up the sidewalk and entrance to the hotel. This was a totally unnecessary inconvenience since the sidewalk was in perfect condition just a few days earlier. BUT the American Hotel will have a brand new sidewalk at the end of May 2026. Enjoy!

Room was immaculate. Checkin with Masuma was wonderful. She went above and beyond the call of duty to accommodate my needs. Overall, a great expeience staying at the American Hotel. Superb location too. I have no complaints. It was a surprise to me that there wasn't an elevator, but I managed.

The hotel is in a great location. Lots of cafes, restaurants and breweries within walking distance. I brought my bicycle with me and there was plenty of space in the room to store it. The room and hotel is very clean. The refrigerator and quality WiFi were both a bonus. The doors aren't super sound-proofed, so you can hear people coming-and-going (and also a guy deciding that it was a good idea to whistle a tune at 11pm!).

The minute I saw the artist's touch in the building front, I knew I'd booked my stay at the right hotel. Absolutely beautiful, charming, quaint, extremely clean, and such a friendly staff and community of other hotel guests. I took a big breath when I opened the front door and saw all those steep steps, but turned out, a kind gentleman was behind me and carried my heavy bag up the steps for me. I wanted to carry it all myself - but at 75, am showing my age - and the man looked disappointed not to be able to help me when I first said thanks, but I can do it. The man felt good about doing such a good deed. I had no problems carrying my bags down the next morning.

Close to Union Station and Little Tokyo
- 4.5/5
A grand old building located close to Japan Town and a 15 minute walk from Union Station. Rooms are bit spartan but with excellent bed, TV, table w/ 2 chairs, towels, etc. 3rd floor was a bit more quieter than 2nd when I stayed on each floor. The grand old hotel is not for everybody because of 1. no elevator with no rooms on first floor, 2. no in-room sink or toilet or shower but quite adequate versions of them exist for Men only, Women only, and either, on each floor (I presume but never was on the 4th floor).
- 1.5/5
Nothing really stood out to me that I really liked unfortunately The people who were booked for the nights I stayed were loud and obnoxious. My door got knocked on multiple times with loud talking and radio sounds blasting in the room next to me. No one at night was there to help keep the noise level down at all. The shared bath spaces are barely taken care of as I keep seeing damages all over the bathrooms and the lights are not that bright. The men's bathroom made it impossible to shower as there was no easy place to keep my clothes near the shower and the door was kept wide open in front of another room. My room had a giant stain on the window cover, the ac had a light that the filter needed to be clean and there was a bug flying around in my room. The bed was tough and the pillows were very cheap to the point where I could barely sleep with them. The lighting also was barely enough to make the room light up. I had to use the bed lamps to even make the room have more light. The place isn't maintained to a good standard and it makes me not want to go back.

Price vs share bathrooms. Didn’t notice in the ad. If I did see it wouldn’t have booked too expensive
- 5/5
Cleanliness, the number of bathrooms/toilets, location, ... I had no problems with my room on 3rd floor -- in fact I liked the location a lot -- but there will be people who will not be able to manage the narrow stairs, a deal-breaker for many. I was traveling with a backpack and not hand carrying anything. The location will also be a problem for some folks, by a busy street that comes alive at night, especially on weekends, with street vendors and lots of folks wandering. I would not give a score of 10 (maybe a 7) but this is done by the software based on the boxes I checked.
- 5/5
The vintage feel of the hotel was great. The room was awesome, and there were a lot of things to do close by. The food trucks around the neighborhood were outstanding.

Very clean and friendly budget lodging, within walking distance of downtown. There’s a lot of restaurants and a pleasant coffee shop nearby. Staff was exceptional. Nothing
