Reviews
This historic Route 66 motel offers a unique, nostalgic experience with themed rooms and friendly, knowledgeable staff. However, the property is dated and in need of updates, particularly in the bathrooms.

Owner was very pleasant and very helpful. Enjoys telling about the property and area around Kingman. The Marilyn Monroe room was great!

The El Trovatore is an exceptionally well-kept and creatively designed motel. The exterior is well-animated (literally) with characters and images that are well-recognized. The interior is clean and nicely decorated with some interesting touches (like old suitcases for nightstands) and the bathroom had a lot of original features, lending to a very nostalgic feel. It is conveniently located to the areas of interest in town. The room had no available outlet to charge any device. The bathroom fixture could not be turned on or off without using a chair, so if you are under 5 foot 7, it's a challenge. The office is not occupied most of the time and an emergency number is posted to reach someone. However, when calling the emergency number, there was only an answering machine. And I didn't receive a call back until three days later. So how is that an "emergency" number?

Loved the room and the people. Pool is closed. The room had limited electrical outlets, so had difficulty with charging phones. Good esting places in walking distance.

This is an iconic Route 66 so is a very old building, and as such it has its charm, but some items look like they are old and in disrepair. However the hotel is clean and the staff super helpful and informative about the area and its history. Property management is trying to keep the hotel in good repair. The room was extra large and the location was quiet. The property is well lit and the murals on all exterior walls are excellent!

We had room 105, designed by Chip and Joanna Gaines. First of all very tasteful however it needs to not just be pretty but functional. Had my 6’4 husband not been with me I would of never had light in the bathroom. Can’t reach the light and could not see in the bathroom mirror, hung too high. Also in this technology era, where are outlets, charging ports? I realize this was built 1930’s, but they put charge ports in lamps now.

Dated bathroom, dark shower. Easy walk to several restaurants

We really enjoyed our stay here, such a cool place! Location is perfect, and the owners were so informative on the area and beyond and were two of the nicest people we met on our road trip on route 66. Would recommend!

We received a very warm welcome upon arrival, and were provided with lots of information about the motel and Kingman. We chose the 'Marilyn Monroe' room. The room was quaint, and gave an historic feel. We appreciate it is an old motel from the 1930's, however, the room and decor were tired, and in need of some TLC. Compared to other classic Route 66 motels we've stayed at, this didn't live up to our expectations. Too much Route 66 kitsch on the outside. Less is more.

This was very clean both room and bathroom . Bed was comfortable , had plenty of towels , nice shower and inside has great pictures . Each room has a theme which is cool ! This was lots of fun because of the theme . Great owners that made you feel so comfortable! A wealth of information on the area! Great stay ! All! good !

Thank you Sam and wife for such a personable greeting, check-in experience. Sam, your unsurpassed knowledge of the area, history, etc. was remarkable! I enjoyed you taking the time to share even the 1st race of the Kentucky Derby on your TV! Thank you wife for having the air conditioning, TV and light on when I opened the door for my stay! So fresh and inviting! Thank you for the availability of the Bible and the Daily Devotional!! All were functional/operative (plumbing, electrical). The fresh, clean towels, amenities available. However, please consider continuing with the minor maintenance issues such as missing floor tiles (seal so the open areas can be routinely cleaned), replacing/cleaning molding shower curtains and rusty rods, fixtures, etc.

Great Route 66 ambiabce

The Route 66 themed El Trovatore is a bit dated but everything is clean and it is a lot of fun. Sam, the owner is very knowledgeable about the history of Kingman and Route 66 and loves to share what he knows. There is a lot of memorabilia and original outdoor artwork including the World's Longest Map of Route 66 and a new "don't miss" mural of Marilyn Monroe.

The owner was fantastic, historic place, was awesome and essential for a Route 66 experience Not much, anything you don’t like just chalk it up to the fact it’s a small motel

The view was fantastic, the owner who checked us in was a wealth of local information and full of great history stories. I enjoyed a long morning walk and just let my mind go back in time, We will be back. It is a old motel so the outlets are few and bathroom (while very clean) also very small. not really walking distance (but could be done) to the local breweries and a fantastic meadery "Hive Five Meade on 66 Overall a unique experience that we will do again

Was not long enough time here

The room heater if effective in warming the bedroom space but it does not reach the bathroom or the small sitting area that is directly under a window. The window is very drafty. The bathroom is very tiny, especially for a tall person, and there is no outlet for a hair dryer nor room to lay out any toiletries. The shower is really dark but is adequately warm; there is one little cubby for your soap. We stayed here for the nostalgia of the historic property as we wanted the vibe of our route 66 trip. I would recommend it for that reason but only if you are ok with the bathroom situation.

Cheerful, clean, nice people. Cute paintings on buildings and themed room decor. Some old classic cars on the property as well .had the Audrey Hepburn room, and when I came in, the TV was on with an old Humphrey Bogart movie to set the scene.? Tables and chairs outside to use (when it's not over 102 degrees. It was 90 when I left at 8 am!) The refrigerator was large, and had a good freezer compartment for my ice cooler packs. Dog friendly. I like the old-fashioned "motel" style. Air conditioning was off when I came, and it took two hours to bring heat below 80. (It was over 100 outside.) It would have been nice if they had turned it on when I made the reservation a couple of hours earlier. The mattress needed rotating as it was breaking down on the side toward the bathroom-a common occurrence in hotels. No surfaces to put things at normal level, only a bathtub covered with a flat surface. I have a bad back and can't bend down too much. Couldn't use outside table and chairs due to the heat. It's an old place and must be hard to keep up with.

They take dogs. The room was small, crammed, and very old. The bathroom was a horror. Old bath tub with a board over it - facets were removed. The sink was grubby and the water system rumbled - and exploded water all over me. The shower stall is low - husband couldn't use it. I was charged an additional $25 per dog (for cleaning?). The price of this old and crumbling motel was excessive - way more than other Motels around the area. Homeless were living at the back canyon of the hotel. Swimming pool was empty of water.

Lots of murals and the owners support artists and they enjoy teaching facts about Route 66 and Kingman. Perfect for the Route 66 traveler.

Great stay on historic route 66 in iconic motel. So helpful with information on the local area, room was really comfortable and spotlessly clean, only sorry we weren’t there for more than one night. Would have liked a mirror in the bedroom but by n means a deal breaker , the bathroom mirror was okay!

Samuel, the owner, knows a lot of town and motel history (next year-2026- is Route-66 centennial, so big plans for the whole route!) I actually have no complaints about El Trovatore. There was only one outlet which was busy with the TV, fridge and coffee maker. No big deal, they didn't have gobs of devices in the 193 0's (there is a plug in the lamp in the bathroom for his electric shaver...hahaha) If you are expecting a holiday inn vibe, do not pick this place. It is fun and campy.

Honestly didn’t recognize this hotel based on the photos. The owner and his wife are very nice and obviously struggling with a motel that has seen better days. Rustic or run down.. this was definitely rundown with the bathroom sorely in need of some TLC and cleaning. I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

This place had so much promise and I hoped it would be a memorable route 66 stay for us. Unfortunately the place is very run down. The final straw for us was a gigantic cockroach (and I mean gigantic) jumping out of our curtains and sprinted across the floor. We had been in the room for less than an hour and grabbed our suitcases and left. We didn’t try to get a refund nor speak to the reception about the issues. We knew that the response we would get wouldn’t be in the realms of professional customer service so we decided to save ourselves the negativity on our trip. We returned the next morning and put the keys into the drop box outside. Listen to the other reviews because they are true.

Each room has a different theme. Although old, I like the classic nature of the room I'm in (has a James Dean theme). Owner/manager Sam is also a delight at check-in. He regaled me with stories if the history of the area. A true delight to talk to him.

The owners are nice and friendly. Beds were comfy. By all accounts we had one of the nicer rooms, Clint Eastwood theme. However we were not impressed. No light or extraction in the shower. Bathroom basin was only fit for brushing your teeth. It had chips and cracks that had been repaired with silicone! Not hygienic at all. Also coffee stains up the wall above one bed. We were due to stay again 3 it's later, tried to cancel, but no reply from owner. Still no reply 2 weeks later.

We loved staying in a unique and locally owned motel. There was plenty of space for the four of us. The motel is a type of retro-kitschy vibe that people will either appreciate or view as dated. We appreciated it! The owners are engaging and eager to help anyway they can. We have experience with older buildings, but we did find the shower a challenge. The room we were in, it was a dark space, and the plumbing was...quirky. But nothing we weren't able to work around.

It's really annoying to arrive at your hotel after a long trip and find the minibar empty. We suggest stocking it with drinks, which you may be charged for later, but especially with cold water; The room was very dirty, under the bed it looked like it had never been cleaned; There is no light in the shower, the bath is in semi-darkness.
- 4/5
It also has themed rooms based around different stars, who may have even stayed there. This trip I stayed in the Marilyn Monroe room, I've also stayed in the James Dean and John Wayne rooms. It's no Holiday Inn express or Marriot, it's a classic old motel, just like you might have stayed in when driving Route 66 60 years ago (except with AC!) The owners are trying hard, but it IS old. The most annoying things I found were a lack of counter space in the bathroom, just a small shelf mounted over the sink, and no place to hang a towel in the shower.

The owner is a well travelled person and knows his Kingman. and Route 66 history. I liked the idea of the historical significance of the hotel for our Route 66 trip from Chicago to o Santa Monica. The murals are great. Unfortunately the establishment has slipped even further into disrepair since my last stay in 2019. The neon tower is no longer working and it sounds like there is not much chance it will be fixed any time soon. I had prepared my son before hand that the rooms are very dated however when we found several bugs scurrying around we were a little freaked out. Then we found them outside the doorway as well. With a little research we discovered that the bugs were a cockroach native to Arizona. The owner did offer a different room but at that point we had decided we couldn't confidently stay there. We booked a room elsewhere.

An amazing and authentic Route 66 motel. Hosts were fun, friendly and welcoming. Gave some really useful information about Kingman and made the check in experience fun and memorable compared to most places. The room was quirky and felt really original like a time capsule. This is an example of what happens when you have a loving owner take care of and put efforts in to keeping an original lodging establishment fully functioning. It aint "new" but it's updated and fresh where it counts, vintage and quirky where it works best. Also if you like movies/cartoons/western-kitsch then this is a MUST stop place, just dont expect it to be the Holiday Inn!! (It's way more fun).

I was looking to explore some Route 66 history, what i discovered was a run down dump. When leaving to get something to eat, I couldn't lock the dead bolt from outside with the key i was given, so i could only lock the door knob which was very flimsy. I pulled my laptop out of the room and put it back in the trunk of my car. The shower smelled of mold and when i turned it on, water pooled around my feet. I was standing in about 3 inches of water by the time my shower was finished; it was gross. I think the owner knows people want to experience the Route 66 vibe and he's taking advantage.

Room was clean and had been somewhat remodeled, but there was not a convenient place to charge our phones or hearing aids. One surge protector bar behind the refrigerator. One 12x12 mirror in the bathroom above the sink.. I am not that short, but i had to stand on my tip toes to use it. Bed was comfortable. Glad we stayed and experienced the hotel, but probably will pick a more modern hotel if we come back.

Historic is one thing, neglected is another. My husband nailed it when he said it is like "putting lipstick on a pig." The whimsical murals can't disguise how tired and in need of some serious maintenance this place is. Dirty floors, some lights not working, no light at all in dark shower.

Terrible experience! I do not recommend this hotel. The bathroom was very outdated. The shower didn’t drain at all and the water got all over the bathroom and carried into the actual room. On top of that, the service was terrible. I booked two rooms. One for me and one for a friend. I cancelled the one for a friend 3 days in advance of the trip and received a cancellation confirmation, however the hotel still charged me for both room. When I called to dispute the charge the person I spoke to on the phone was very rude and refused to honor the cancellation and issue me a refund for the second room. I strongly recommend that you look elsewhere for a place to stay.

This hotel was awful!!! The front office was dingy, dark and dirty. After listening to the owner try to impress us with facts and how many languages he spoke, we finally got to our room. The gap around the door was wide enough to allow small creatures (mice and such) to enter. The door lock was flimsy enough to easily kick open (we slept with a chair and luggage against the inside of the door). This was our fifth time driving Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica. All Hotels/Motels along the route were five star (Wagon Wheel, Campbell House, Blue Smallow, El Rancho, La Posada) with the exception of the El Trovatore!! We tried to stay true to the route, but if driving the Mother Road, do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else!!!

Be warned that if you book this motel with the “Pay at Property” option that Expedia gives you, you might not have a reservation when you get there. Your room will have been given away to someone else who chose the “Pay Now” option. Anyway, that’s what we think happened to our reservation. We are not sure that’s what happened, but it sure looks that way; like the owner doesn’t want to honor the “Pay at Property” option or else he doesn’t understand it. When we arrived on Aug 13, 2024, we were told we had no reservation even though we had a confirmation email from Expedia showing that the room had been booked on July 23rd. I showed the owner the email and he wouldn’t even look at it; kept insisting that we did not make a reservation. Then he told us that it was because our card had been declined. That is ridiculous! There is no reason for our card to have been declined and we wouldn’t have gotten a confirmation email if our card had been declined. Also, I had used it that same week to book all our other hotels for this trip and had no problem checking into those hotels. I used the “Pay at Property” option for all of them, I might add. This is a very cute motel. We stayed there two years ago and wanted to stay there again this year. We were disappointed. Thank goodness it was only 5 PM when we arrived so we had time to find another hotel. I don’t think we will ever try staying at El Trovatore again. We are too upset.

I liked the art of the property but the bathroom looked a bit dirty. I also felt the check in process has a possibility of being unsafe but they know the area better than me.

This old Route 66 classic has seen better days, however, the motel provides an authentic and fun Route 66 experience for those traveling the old highway. The proprietor is a hoot who will give you a good history of the motel and of Kingman. The rooms are comfortable but definitely a bit baggage worn. They are themed to actors, which is fun. We got Marilyn Monroe

The hotel proprietor was a very charming and knowledgeable fellow. He was quite interesting to talk with. The motel as a whole is very, very old and showing it's age. Each room is decorated in a celebrity theme. We stayed in the Marilyn Monroe room. The motel does have a lot of charm if you don't mind crumbling and old. The bed was very comfortable.

I booked this place last minute when other accommodation didn’t work out for me - it was way lovelier than I expected! The managers were super friendly and made sure that the room was clean and ready for me, and while I waited for that the manager gave me a quick history of the town and was very kind. Lovely room with great a/c (it was over 100 degrees during my stay and it was perfectly cool in the room). Highly recommmend!

I was so excited to stay at this hotel, a vintage hotel on Route 66. This hotel even has a theme song on their website and vintage neon signs. The photos on Expedia seemed like it would be cute and quirky. The hotel office, smelled like a dog and was cluttered. The agent who checked us in was kind and gave good recommendations for the area. After checking in, we learned that the bathtub in our room was covered by a piece of painted plywood and that we would only be able to use the shower. It was not a huge deal, just a disappointment. We decided to stroll around the property and check it out. Here is what was not disclosed when booking the room: a large portion of the hotel is rented out on a monthly basis to some hard luck stories as micro apartments The two buildings in the front serve most of the vacation bookings and look kept up. The buildings in the back look a little rundown. I'm not sure if knowing the rooms were sublet as micro apartments would have deterred me from staying with my boyfriend, but if I were staying alone it would have been nice to know up front. Also, the vintage signs have been inoperable for quite some time according to one of the residents

It is difficult to trade off authentic fixtures and fittings with modern expectations. Old original sinks and shower fittings are good but not the dirty and messy sealant around the fittings

The bathroom was original and I put just didn’t look clean. There was a wooden mat on the shower floor and we wondered what it covered, it seemed like there might have been mold. We didn’t shower. Also, the curtain on the window was old and dated and left the window exposed for anyone to see in ( frankly, no one would have been able to look without binoculars. The door had a hole in the corner which madE me wonder what critters might be visiting. Overall, there have been nice changes but they would benefit from updating the bathroom and the exterior door. Oh, and my key opened the room next to us when I went to the wrong groom accidentally. The owner, Sam, was very nice and informative. The floor in the sleeping area was updated and looked nice. The Marilyn Monroe them was nice.

The room was fine. The outside and property grounds were a bit rough looking. Pool didn't have any water in it. The hotel office was cluttered, pretty un professional looking, which is putting it kindly. The guy checking us in was nice and friendly. Just a bit unprofessional in presentation of their office and check in. Probably won't stay there again. It wasn't the worst place we've stayed in, but there's nothing there to be excited about. Sorry for the not so good review, it could just be better is all.

The owners have poured so much love into this place. The murals and the individual decor in each room (we had the Audrey Hepburn room) added much to the experience. We were having trouble with the wifi (we were trying to watch a streaming religious service) and the maintenance guy came to our room two or three times in the evening to try to resolve it. It never got resolved, but you can't top the effort and service. Sam the owner is an original; he's going to give you the history of the motel and the town. Checking into this place isn't so much a formality as it is a commitment. Monica his wife is charming and so proud of what they've done with the place. El Trovatore is a don't-miss on Route 66.

We enjoyed the historic charm of this motel on Route 66. The bathroom was clean. The sheets were nice and the bed was comfortable. We enjoyed talking with the owners to learn a little more about this historic stop on Route 66. It was built in the 1930s so expect it to be more "rustic" than a new motel and just enjoy the history. We will stay here again the next time we travel through Kingman.

This hotel was clean, but it is definitely a historical classic. Cute how the rooms are theme based. When we initially drove by I was a bit skeptical, but it was fine. No frills, no coffee in the rooms, but Mr. D’s is just down the road and a fun little spot to grab breakfast.

This hotel is awesome! It's a piece of route 66 history and has been very well maintained. It is still very much like it would have been on the 1950s, so if you're expecting a modern 5 star hotel this probably isn't for you. BUT, if you're looking to experience a piece of history in a very nice hotel with amazing owners that are full of information about route 66 at it's best, then you need to check this place out.

If your looking for a route 66 experience from the past. This is the place... if your looking for 5 stars and room service etc like a hilton. This in not the place.

If you like kitschy with a 1940's vibe, this is the place for you. No phones in room, hot water and wi-fi issues. The staff was GREAT but this place has not been manintained very well and needs a lot of work. Front doors face parking lot and the lock hardware leaves you feeling unsafe. An interesting experience.
- 5/5
One of my favorite places. Older, but well maintained and clean. You can feel the history of 66 here. Owners are super nice and very helpful pointing our several POIs and providing a local map. Marilyn Monroe room for me! Loved it.
- 1/5
This place has known some better days… It was, by far, the worst hotel we had in our 25 day trip. Windows are condemned, bath is condemned, the door handle will come off if you don’t pay attention. Rent somewhere else. This place is not worth it
- 4/5
Original 1930s motel with themed rooms and murals outside. Rooms good but obviously with period fittings. I stayed in Audrey Hepburn room and whether by accident or design one of her movies was showing on the TV when I entered my room. Proprietor explained history of motel and the town at check-in which was refreshing.
- 2/5
The Wi-Fi was hopeless, there was no coffee machine in the room, it was virtually impossible to get the old two faucet shower to the correct temperature and the bed was old, soft and uncomfortable. Although the hotel trades on its historical association with Route 66 it is essentially run down and in need of renovation. You will pay $30 more than an equivalent (better equipped) budget hotel such as Super 8 or Motel 6.
- 5/5
Stayed in a piece of history! Exceptionally clean. Quiet. Sam the owner knows the history of Kingman and this stretch of ‘66 as well or better than anyone.
- 5/5
We were in the James Dean room. Different cartoon characters are painted on the outside walls of the motel. Porky Pig, Betty Boop, Wylie Coyote, etc. Very fun place & the owners are too! They are also very knowledgable about the history of Kingman & Route 66. Wished we could of stayed longer in Kingman.
- 5/5
We stayed because it is a true Route 66 motel. Therefore it is very dated. However the owners are delightful and very informative. The bed was great and it was easy to get around from there. These types of places are for those who seek Americana at its best.

El Trovatore Motel is THE place to stay in Kingman on your Route 66 road trip. It has the longest Route 66 map in the country, painted all over the motel wall. A historic little gem !

I have the pictures to backup my statement. This location to us is not a 5 4 3 or even a 2 star location. We pulled in and had a sight to scare us into leaving. We noted a broken room window. Wood that appears to be rotted. Paint ceiling from the wood doors. Extension cords used for some sort of reason upon wooden poles. Those poles also had what apprared to be rot and peeled paint. Someone should look at who exactly is posting such reports.
