Reviews
The Sanderling Resort is a beachfront property with stunning views and a variety of amenities, including a spa, restaurants, and pools. Guests generally praise the friendly and accommodating staff, but some express disappointment with the cleanliness of the rooms and the resort's facilities.

The staff were friendly, efficient and responded quickly to any issues. The pool was amazing, very clean as was the hot tub. My complaint is with the entry/exit doors on the North building. Between the wind and occupants not closing the doors gently, all you heard up until midnight was the slamming of those doors. It was very loud and kept us up most of the night. We reserved 2 rooms for our party of 4, thinking they would be next to each other but that was not the case. One room only had 1 chair with a small table. The other room had 2. A stairway down to the beach would definitely better serve the elderly and out of shape guests. That hill was a hard climb. We had a good time despite a few hiccups but I think we will rent a house next visit.

Great location, wonderful amenities, excellent staff. Nothing to complain about

Only one restaurant was open for service in mid April. The food and the service there were great, but the lack of options was frustrating. Even the pool side service area was closed during our stay.

One of the best parts is the private beach access, where you can spend the entire day relaxing with your pups. The resort sets up umbrellas and lounge chairs for you, making it so easy to settle in and just enjoy the ocean breeze together. It honestly feels like a luxury beach day designed for both humans and dogs. The property itself is absolutely beautiful, bright, clean, airy, and incredibly well-maintained. Everywhere you look has that calm coastal vibe that instantly puts you at ease. The rooms and common spaces feel fresh and inviting without being stuffy. The restaurant on the property is also top-notch. Great food, great atmosphere, and such a nice bonus when you don’t feel like leaving the resort. If you truly want to disconnect, recharge, and have a relaxing vacation with your dogs, this place is 100% worth it. It’s one of those rare resorts that actually delivers the peaceful getaway experience it promises.

Food at the Lifesaving Station was excellent; staff was very friendly; grounds were lovely and well maintained. Slow service in the restaurant; Memorial Day weekend upcharge was excessive; pet fee was higher than what we've paid at other hotels/resorts.

We were able to walk to 2 outstanding restaurants...Theodosia and The Paper Canoe. The staff was very friendly and always had smiles for us. The sandy pathways made walking challenging, and the foot-rinse shower was positioned in a way that you would immediately get sand on your feet again after using it.

The Atlantic Ocean beach is within walking distance of the hotel. Pool and hot tub available, plenty of lounge chairs, fire pit open every night. Coffee and pastries served in lobby early each morning. Restaurant has very limited menu, and the pricing does not justify the marginal food quality.

Jet spa was nice and warm on a cooler spring weekend but the jets were not working. Pool was clean but cool. The Lifesaving Station food was good and the wait staff was great! Fireplace in our room did not work and despite notifying staff on Friday evening when we arrived, no one ever came to work on it by the time we left Sunday at lunch time. The resort hosted a fairly large (200 guest?) wedding Saturday, and there was a lot of trash left all over Sunday morning.

We really enjoyed the hot tubs and how close the sanderling was to the beach. Also the town of Duck being pretty close. It was a very relaxing trip and the room was beautiful. The staff were also very nice and talkative. The lifesaving station was very overpriced. And the food was not the best. For only two meals we paid over $120 which I do understand for a higher priced establishment, but oftentimes food can be very good for much less.

The island is beautiful. Ran into a few issues. Booked an oceanview room but got a house view and oceanview to the left. Hot tub on the fritzed. Some amenities not open. Did not havecwater for about 12 hours. But mainly did not have a real oceanview

Cleanliness, Aesthetically pleasing, Friendliness, Peaceful We arrived to eat at 11:15 but our reservation was at noon. We went to see if we could be seated earlier and that’s when we were told that it is closed 11:00 to 12: 00 for switching out from breakfast to lunch. The matre’de was nice enough to seat us early and gave us the menu. After reviewing the menu, she came out and told us that if we wanted a burger, it would be at least an hour before they could serve that. Of course that’s what we wanted.

Cleanliness, adult pool separate from kid's pool area. Service is slow across the board at food venues, staff do not smile, seem a bit disorganized and they do not move any faster even when getting behind. No indoor opportunities; billiard table, games, cards, ping pong,

The entire staff was excellent! They went out of their way to be accommodating, friendly, and helpful. The pool facility was well maintained, easy to access, and plenty of room for guests. The room was large and bedding was so very comfortable! The in-room coffee was disappointing. With only a hot water kettle and no microwave, one did not get a good hot cup of coffee, and coffee bags do not deliver a good product. On top of that, the main lobby coffee was not working for anything more than regular brewed coffee., so one was forced to go to the onsite restaurant for a specialty coffee. I was disappointed in the room view, or lack thereof, the cleanliness of the porch, the lack of recycling by the resort itself-- which on an island should be a main concern for the environment! I wish there had been a sundry shop for such things as sunscreen, tylenol, etc. Instead, one was forced to drive to purchase forgotten items one might have needed. There was an odor or fragrance in the room which was overpowering when one first walked into the room. I had to open to door to the porch to allow fresh air in to help mitigate this. It gave the odor of a floral scented plug in air freshener. Not pleasant to me !

Room was spacious & very nice. Tall/big guy on beach set up chairs & then helped husband try to fly his kite but not enough wind. He was great. Bartender at outside bar was very good as well. Fire pits with chairs were nice Breakfast at Rescue restaurant- food was good but service slow & price high. Requested early check-in when booking but room was not ready til 4:30-4:45 Would have like to have some bottled water in room or in lobby (snacks as well)

The elevator was broken. We were told that had been struck by lightning. I was also told that it had been broken for one year. They have three floors almost 2 of the buildings and I think two on the other, but I don’t know if they meant elevators in the building that we were in or every single one wasn’t clarified also told that they were having a New Year’s Eve celebration. Nothing was held in the lobby as previously expected the restaurant on site closed at 9 PM New Year’s Eve and we were rushed like you wouldn’t believe for six course meal that cost $300.

The location was fine and the bed was comfortable. Other than that, the inn didn’t have much else to recommend it. We stayed here twice many years ago and we had fond memories of the beauty and service. The staff we saw were nice but the available amenities were minimal. The furniture was tired and the decorating was a bit weird. I’ve experienced better amenities and services in mid-priced business hotels. The Sanderling Inn was a poor value.

Beautiful resort and un-matched location. You can see both the Atlantic and the sound from the upstairs lobby area. Outside facilities are really nice (even though much was closed due to the off season). Very nicely decorated. Lots of amenities (in normal season) and would be great for families. Multiple problems with state of repair and cleanliness. Dead mesquites all over the window trim and woodwork in upstairs lobby. The place was only at 10% capacity (per employe) yet they couldn't clean the areas people congregate in. Our room, #316, had a broken door stop, closet doors which need adjusted and won't close properly, a TV which has Direct TV service but couldn't receive major networks, and spotty internet coverage. We and another guest smelled the pungent aroma of pot having been smoked in the downstair lobby area of the south hotel building. Not good. Pillows not very comfy. The restaurant - The Life Saving Station - does not have its outside lights on and looks closed. We wandered in for dinner and were the only one there. No wonder, people just drive by thinking it is closed.

It was a nice stay though the room was not what you would expect at the price point. Two of the walls were in need of repairs, windows needed some cleaning, coffee in room was a kettle with tea like bags of coffee that tasted awful, and bathroom had pretty much nothing in it.

1st room not good. Needed maintenance and upkeep. Fan needed dusting. After dinner found ants in bed. Staff moved us to a different room which was better maintained but unfortunately it didn’t have the ocean view. Beach was beautiful loved the chairs and umbrellas provided. Neat fire pits area. For the costs per night I expect better rooms. Staff surprised me with bottle of champagne and a heartfelt note for my special birthday. It was a nice surprise.

I didn't feel the pricing was not appropriate for the time spent. I tried calling for someone to help with my bags as I was leaving because I was packing up for 3 people and they never answered the phone. It's a very nice place, but it is very expensive for a one-night stay especially due to nothing being included or complimentary. Also, I was there to surprise my 75 year old gma with a birthday gift, but also was scouting the place for my upcoming wedding. When I let the staff know of my plans to return, it didn't really feel like they would care either way. I was expecting more of a tour or even a pamphlet with important wedding information considering this resort is suppose to also be a wedding venue.

The restaurants, beach and location were great! I was given a small room facing the parking lot with a dangerous balcony. I booked an Ocean View Junior Suite in November 2024 through Booking.com for a vacation in July 2025. After one night in the small room, I complained to the front desk. They didn't have anything else for me. Then late afternoon on the second day the manager found a junior suite for me, facing the parking lot and again, no ocean view. I did not receive the room I booked and paid for. Main building has no elevator. Also, dogs on furniture in common areas. Bathroom sink in second room backed up.

Beautifully situated between the ocean and the bay, with lots of activities available in both (we did the parasailing). Rooms were comfortable with gorgeous walk-in showers. Unbelievable food menus in the Lifeguard Station and Theodosia across the street, where we had one of the finest meals we’ve ever eaten. Close to lots of shopping and other eateries in Duck. We loved our three days at The Sanderling. A storm blew in some small jellyfish that made swimming in the ocean unavailable one day. Not much the hotel could do about that, though.

This hotel might be "renovated" but the inadequate upkeep and housekeeping makes it undesirable to return next year. Management should take a long look and try to fix the inadequacies before they start losing return guests.

The Sanderling is absolutely magical. I entered check in and was greeted by Lisa who is so helpful and kind. Our king suite was roomy and offered amazing views and the decor is beautiful. The two pools, beach set up with chairs are umbrella are included. The property has a Lifesaving station restaurant. It is amazing to see how the rescues occurred off the coast years ago and see the museum pieces on display in the restaurant. We spent two nights and truly relaxed. I can’t wait to return.

Beach was peaceful. Pool was decent. Staff were lovely but woefully understaffed and overworked. Completely overpriced. 2 star masquerading as 5 star. Understaffed in all areas. Rooms not cleaned. Our room was right next to a huge AC unit. Food and drink overpriced for the area. There are no coffee facilities in the room. It so badly wants to be a top resort, but it's not. Sadly cannot recommend it.

Pools, beach & restaurants very conveniently located. The ocean suite room was extremely comfortable and large with a beautiful view. The prices of drinks & food were extremely high. Also, when the wind was fierce, the outside first floor door would slam and could be felt & heard every time all the way in our room on the 3rd floor.

Check-in was average. Easy parking. Room had about 30 mosquitoes in it. Not ideal. Nighttime brought more. The lower lobby of our building literally had 2 swarms of mosquitoes on the walls. We’re talking apocalyptic number of bugs. Easy to fumigate, I’d presume. Not relaxing. Not worthy of another stay.

The Sanderling is the crown jewel of the Outerbanks. I have just one minor suggestion: Get rid of the two stroke engine powered blowers used to push sand back onto paths. Electric blowers are powerful enough these days and far less jarring.

Nothing in particular. We felt nickled and dimed. The room was cold and uninviting. Ice machine didn’t work, view of the ocean was obstructed by cobwebs on the balcony. The staff wasn’t helpful. My husband fell due to a protruding board in the doorway and all they offered was a couple of bandaids and to call EMS. His pants were bloody but they didn’t have a laundry facility. They did not offer to send the pants out to be cleaned or to buy a new pair. Poor customer service. Not even a free bottle of water or a cup of coffee. The vent in the bathroom barely worked so the bath was steamy after a shower . The toilet seat was broken. There was only one ice machine in the building but it was broken. By the way an electric coffee pot was available but I wasn’t going to use bathroom sink water. No comfortable chairs in the room. We had no desire to eat on the property because everything was overpriced. No bargain, no luxury, poor customer service service. No follow-up on the fall.

We have stayed at the Sanderling before and enjoyed our stay. Our complaint on this visit was the outdoor dining and lobby bar were not open. There seems to be a hard rule that everything isn't open until Memorial weekend. If you wanted something to drink you had to walk over to the restaurant which was not a quick walk. My husband also thought the landscaping looked terrible. Also a lot of the wood handrailing should be replace as the wood is splintering and is a hazard.

We came from Sterling, Va., to spend a few days at the beach. We were given a warm welcome by Heather who checked us in, showed us around, and gave us excellent suggestions about things to see and do. You would not be able to find a more gracious host than Heather. The Sanderling was recently remodeled and is beautiful. The beach is just a few steps out the door and was pristine. The Sanderling provides chairs, towels and umbrellas. The food was delicious and we ate frequently at the restaurant. Highly recommend this hotel and a special shout out to Heather for making our visit special.

Really nice property, only reason I did not rate excellent for all is that they are on the tail end of renovating the property. The only negative is that the main doors are not locked and anyone can walk in, it appears they have it set up for key cards to be swiped to enter but during my stay, I never had to use as the doors were always unlocked an open, which I did not like.Other than that, it is a very nice place to stay and has great amenities available.

We booked 2 nights for Thanksgiving at the Sanderling. We really looked forward to it! The beautiful views, warm and friendly common areas with tea, hot chocolate, coffee, and cozy environment. However, it was no where to be found. It was an enormous disappointment. The hotel was not transparent about its construction and remodeling at the time of booking, nor any where on its site. Every guest we talked to was as surprised as we were to find sub-par facilities. If I had known in advance, I would have stayed somewhere else.

Property seems run down . Room had a nice view however rug had many stains and walls were stained too . We were not informed that they were under construction. Elevator smelled like a toilet . We took the stairs. Parking lot is very dark and we felt unsafe . Icing on the cake …someone stole a pair of earrings from room !

The lack of signage is a problem for nrw guests. Our concerns were addressed but not acted on. Ie, keys mot working, firepit would not cut off.

We've been going to this property since 1987. But since then, we've seen a gradual decline in both service and upkeep of the property yet the prices seem keep going up. Service is still good but the facilities need more upkeep and show how old this property is. Windows in common areas are dirty, as well as furniture and carpeting in common areas look old and ratty. They've also cut back on little things. If I am paying about $400 a night, I expect real glass ware in the rooms and real coffee mugs- not cheap plastic cups. No bathrobes in the rooms anymore and only a few bath accessories. Check-in used to be very welcoming with an overview of the property and fruit in the lobby. Now the experience is about the same as checking into a Motel 6. The only good thing they have going for them is they are right on the beach and the pools are still a great place to relax.

The property location is in a nice quiet area, close to the town of Duck. There’s a lot of restaurants and shops in the town which is convenient. The resort itself is ok. The lobby is nice and well kept. The staff were all very friendly. The room and building we stayed in was clean on the surface but it was evident that deep cleaning has not been done on a regular basis. The room and especially the closet had a very musty smell. There were marks from dead bugs on the walls of the room, the carpet in the room and hallway/stairs had a lot of stains. The screen of the door to the balcony in our room was in bad shape with several holes (hence the dead bug marks). It was surprising that there was no microwave in the room. We were also disappointed to find out when we arrived that one of the restaurants on property was closed for the season. The restaurants that were open were fine but way overpriced for the quality of the food. It would be nice to have some grab and go options on property to take items to the beach, snacks/sandwiches, We ended up going into Duck and to pick up some items at the market instead of the mediocre, pricey food at the restaurant. The pool and hot tub were nice, and it was great to have chairs/umbrellas available for the beach. Overall, it was fine but for the cost of the room per night it was disappointing and not worth the price we paid. We have stayed at other places that were less expensive and cleaner. Based on that we probably won’t stay again.

Our long weekend stay was perfect. I imagine it’s a little noisy in the summer (we could hear the people in the next room as well as people in the hall), but the beds were comfortable (lots of pillow choices!), the private deck perfect, the bathroom fantastic, and the public areas wonderfully well appointed!

The room rates are highway robbery for the quality of the rooms. They have clearly not been maintained. The rooms are old, dated, stains on carpet, stains on furniture, furniture falling apart, nasty dirt and dust that looks like it’s been there for decades. There was an awful smell in the hallway. There was a large bug crawling on the wall in my room (NOT the small, mosquito-like bugs they mentioned on a sign in the room). There was hair in my bed. This hotel is advertised as AAA four diamond, but there is no possible way that is true. I paid an exorbitant amount of money for this nasty room for two nights and left a night early because the room was so nasty. Also, the grab and go breakfast options at the hotel are limited to small boxes of cereal, muffins, and egg sandwiches that have been sitting out and will be heated up by a hotel employee, and you have to pay for those. The beach chairs/pools chairs are worn out and gross to sit on. The food from the pool bar was not good. Finally, to add insult to injury, when I checked out a night early I was told I could not receive an invoice because I was checking out early. A few days later after I got home, I checked my credit card statement and saw a large charge. I called the hotel the person I spoke with said that I was charged an additional $40 per night “resort fee” since I had booked through Expedia. Buyer beware. This place is not what is advertised in terms of the room, amenities, and fees. Not customer centric.

I have stayed numerous times prior to this visit. It is sad to see the condition of the property - peeling paint, worn carpets, very worn furniture. No bell staff out front to help 2 ladies with luggage up steps. No staff available to assist with umbrellas and chairs on beach and not enough umbrellas for number of guests on the beach. In summary, this property is in serious need of renovation. We love coming here and look forward to future improvements, (hopefully).

We like the location of this property. Overpriced rooms for the condition and amenities of property. Food in the restaurant is good quality (breakfast and dinner). Service was slow, we were told this is because it was close to end of season (mid-August) and that the servers were tired. No beach service, chairs and umbrellas are out for you to place. Each day the waves washed up onto the shore during high tide and washed into umbrellas and chairs. When the wind picked up it blew umbrellas over and along the beach. Think it would be safe if there was a beach attendant to keep an eye on these things. Towels at the resort (family) pool ran out daily. Overall, we would stay again because of location and that this is the only hotel to choose from for the area.

The property has not been maintained to its former standards. The walls are heavily marked with wear and tear, and the carpets are stained and way overdue for replacement. The walls of our room were spotted with various spills and suitcase scuffs. I stepped on an open safety pin and noticed used tissues under the bed. It was also clear the hallways and rooms had not been vacuumed in some time. Yes, the location is beautiful, but there is nothing luxury about this property. This once-grand resort now feels more like a neglected afterthought. It’s disappointing to see a place with so much potential fall so far from its former glory. At checkout I voiced my concerns to management only to receive lip service about a renovation beginning in November, however, the hotel is not in any condition to accept reservations and host guests.

Ultimately the manager waived the resort fee - which I expected since we had to carry our own beach chairs and umbrellas out to the beach and there were rarely beach/pool towels available. Finally, we booked a king room through hotels.com but were given a room with two queen beds. The manager informed me that the property could not guarantee room types booked via third party, which I have never heard of before.

The condition of the property and facilities are tired and worn. The room however was clean and the bed was comfortable. Lack of a resort feel despite the resort fees. The building exterior requires capital needs (worn siding and deteriorating roof and wood). The pool furniture was broken and very dated. The location is good, and this is likely the reason the resort has been able to maintain occupancy without making necessary building and furniture upgrades.

Nice location. The property definitely needs renovation. It has a lot of potential with multiple restaurants and ideal location. Also they need more beach chairs . There is no one directly on the beach at all time setting up umbrellas. Finally, if anybody has allergies to animals they do allow dogs in every single room of the hotel. I believe renovation is pending next year so would love to revisit when it does.

The property as I'm sure you are aware is in need of a complete renovation. That said there is a difference between needing a renovation and cleanliness. In the room the carpet is clearly so filthy it should just be removed at this point. We had some bugs on the floor and they did clean which made it better but the carpet is not clean. The flooring is also not clean, is coming up everywhere. Safety wise I had some serious concerns... the outer doors do not lock at all... open 24/7. Our door to the room did not close all the way either. The bathroom was in the best shape- after it was cleaned it was good. The pools are fabulous and clean. The sandbar restaurant was great.. food was good and overall clean and great atmosphere. The beach chairs need to be replaced and given the fee for activities I wonder what you are spending that money on? The spider webs along the walk to the beach and overall garbage left around.. toys not put away for days.. makes me wonder what the people working there daily do? The activities are non existent. My girls are in their teens so we just wanted the beach but for younger families where are the daily activities for them? This resort is a gem... was a gem... could be! I love the Outer Banks... it was our first time there. We would love to stay again but to be honest if the place doesn't get cleaned up we will not. After we left we stayed at a Hampton Inn going home... the girls remarked that it felt good to be in a clean room.. that said alot. Th

Our room was dirty (stained sofa, dirty carpet, bed full of sand, dead bugs all over window sill) and in disrepair (broken dresser, broken safe, nonfunctional outlets). The staff was unhelpful when we brought these issues to their attention. The whole hotel seems shabby, which is a shame, as it has historically been a nice place to stay.

We stayed for the first time this past week. Dining options were decent but very pricy. Property was clean & quiet. Overall we had a good experience & will definitely be back.

This resort is ideal for both cold weather escapes and summer retreats, providing a welcoming atmosphere for various occasions, including family gatherings. The picturesque location adds to the charm, offering a beautiful backdrop for memorable moments. The dining options at the resort are top-notch, with excellent restaurants serving delicious food to satisfy every palate. Additionally, guests can expect clean and inviting rooms that contribute to a comfortable and pleasant stay. The refreshing scent in the rooms enhances the overall ambiance, adding to the positive experience for guests.

Check in and check out seemed awkward, perhaps more staff should be helping out, but no sense of urgency to get guests in and out. The room was fine, but housekeeping left way too much decaf and not enough regular coffee. Also, the room had few towels and what towels there were couldn’t go around the waste because they were more like hand towels. For what it is, I expect the details of the Sanderling to be on the mark. Not this time.

A beautiful beachside resort. Front-row seats to a full moon and a fireplace: doesn’t get better.
