Reviews
The hotel is praised for its excellent location, particularly for those visiting UVA, and friendly staff. However, there are numerous complaints about the condition of the rooms, including issues with cleanliness, outdated decor, and malfunctioning amenities. The rooftop bar and restaurant are also mentioned as both a pro and a con, with some guests enjoying the atmosphere and others experiencing poor service.
- Excellent location, particularly for visiting UVA
- Friendly staff
- Rooms are outdated and in need of renovation
- Issues with cleanliness and malfunctioning amenities in rooms

We always love Graduate properties and their attention to local university themes and details. The staff was incredibly helpful and the location was great for our visit to UVA.

Very creative decor in college theme. Nice rooftop. Beds very comfortable. Location, location, location!

Room was clean, staff was helpful.

Rooftop bar was great but watch for the wind!! Blew over a wine glass!
- 4/5
Staff was great. A very minor issue was that the sliding shower door was not installed/adjusted properly leaving one panel very difficult to slide.

Staff was excellent! So friendly and helpful.

The staff was amazing and the location was perfect. My main issue with the hotel was room safety. There is a gap between the floor and the bottom of the door of about an inch and a half. Someone can easily get a tool and break into the room. Also let’s in light from the hall at night as well as a lot more sound. Will never stay here again due to safety issues.

Lovely stay at the Graduate Hotel in Charlottesville. I’ve stayed at a few of these throughout the country and they are always welcoming and impeccably designed. I love that they capture the flavor of the city.
- 5/5
The room was clean and decor was warm and inviting! The staff was very pleasant. Chip in the Valet department was especially helpful with accessing parking and information about local establishments.
- 4/5
Very clean and very close to the University. The room decorations were great. The bathroom and bed comfort also great. They did a wonderful job in graduation weekend.

Climate control unit had some kind of wrapper in the fan and would randomly make noise in the middle of the night. I should have switched rooms. I booked a 1-king and was given a 2-queen room. The complimentary water bottles were not restocked. Nothing was level in the construction. The door to the safe would swing open and bang my shins. The door to the shower would slowly roll open, I stuffed a wash cloth in the wheels to stop it. There was a unique and opposing scent for the shampoo, conditioner, and body soap. Just pick one and stick with it! The plug for the sink got stuck closed while shaving and had to call maintenance. The wifi was really bad, I could not download episodes on my app for watching on the airplane trip home. The coffee is freeze-dried instant, and not restocked unless asked, every day. If you have to get to the public accessible floor for the parking garage, you still need to use the key card to use the elevator. A pain if you're in a rush of hands are full (i.e. holding hot coffee) The breakfast option is subpar. On my second morning I needed a burrito to go, and they had none in stock. I feel like this trip was the plot of a bad sitcom. The staff were very friendly.
- 5/5
The hotel was warm, lively and clean. The staff were amazing and very helpful, especially with getting an early check in. The decor was great! The rooftop view was amazing. Would stay there again.

I prepaid for a room. Room wasn’t ready at check-in. We were told the lot was full and we had to figure something else out. Have a parking spot during a busy concert weekend is one of the reasons we picked to stay there. After the concert, waited 1.5 hours to get out of the garage we finally found a spot in. Went back to the hotel and was told they don’t have a room for us (supposedly because of a pipe issue, but more likely they overbooked). They offered us a room at another hotel that was 35 minutes away. At that point, we decided to just drive home (2.5 hours away). If this is the kind of customer service $415 a night buys, I think I’ll pass. I won’t be staying at a Graduate again.
- 1/5
The air conditioning in the room was broken and the hotel was completely booked so they gave us a fan to help but the room temperature was still uncomfortably warm. The hotel manager was incredibly nice and helpful when we checked out but the night was very unpleasant.
- 4/5
Check in was a little hectic something happened with our reservation. Front desk was awesome. Very busy. Amenities were not listed anywhere since check in was hectic we were anxious to let the people behind us check in. Not sure where anything was. Was very excited about the roof top but that was a bust. The help up there was not friendly at all. They were out of things she was happier not making a sale then suggesting something else. Only went up there once which was a bummer it was nice and would have liked to enjoy it more. Everything was nice not sure if we will be back to the graduate.

We are on the rooftop at The Trophy Room Restaurant!!! Excellent food, libations and service! Tons of shops, restaurants, dining options and sights on campus wit in walking distance.
- 4/5
That said, the rooms don’t match the strong reviews. While the lobby and common areas are nicely done, the rooms feel like a modest refresh of what appears to be a former Red Roof Inn. Low ceilings, flat doors, basic finishes, and inexpensive furniture/hardware give it a dated, budget-hotel feel. Paint and decor only go so far—the underlying structure shows. Even the basic cable TV adds to that impression. One thing to be aware of: there’s a UVA/medical heating plant (or similar facility) across the street. During our stay it produced a constant low-frequency hum/rumble that could bother light sleepers. If that’s a concern, request a room on the even-numbered side facing away from W. Main St (US 250). Overall: great location and service, but rooms may not meet expectations for the price.
- 3/5
I was surprised that we did not get any daily room cleaning service. One morning the cafe was closed Because an employee failed to show up for work. They did offer us compensation with free continental breakfast and compensation at the restaurant. Sean bent over backwards in apologizing to us.
- 4/5
Low amenities for a four star hotel, but the coffee shop downstairs makes a good cup.

The location comfortable bed That you have to pay for parking, it advertised 2 restaurants as 1 is a coffee shop the other a bar with bar food. No breakfast included and we had to pay for the coffee in the morning as the room coffee was terrible. There was a crack in the bathroom sink and the shower door would not open or close properly. No secure looked door from the parking garage ( 3rd floor) to the entrance of the hotel. Anybody could of walked in off the street. For the price didn't meet our expectations.

The proximity to the hospital! My room was 82 degrees when I got there and even after repeatedly lowering the temp, finally stopping on 50, it never got any cooler. Trying to sleep was on unbearable! The next morning, I spoke with Max and Wendy, at the front desk. Max said that he would have the thermostat reset and see if that will fix the problem. He then called me and said that it worked, but when I got back it was still 74 and yet again even after putting back on 50, it did not get any cooler and I had yet another unbearable night. So I ended up just checking out and finding another hotel.

The staff, especially Sean (front desk) and Matt (valet) were terrific. The room was comfortable and uniquely decorated. While small, the hotel has a fun game room, a coffee shop and a rooftop bar. The location us great for both Uva and downtown attractions.

The room felt musty, and I wasn’t a fan of the service. I went upstairs to the restaurant for dinner and had to wait 10 minutes to even find the bartender and be acknowledged, and another 5 to wait for her to get off the phone. The elevator reeked of cigarette smoke.
- 5/5
The decor was amazing — well done !!

there were hairs in the shower and near the lights from the previous guest.

Close to the college. Room was barely clean.
- 5/5
I don't remember the woman's name, but the bartender on the 9th floor grille was great. Wonderful and considerate service to put our food order in 10 minutes before the kitchen closed. And pretty good singer/voice, to boot.
- 3.5/5
We only received 2 towels, which seems silly. Value was definitely not there for what we paid, but I know it was a busy time at UVA that weekend. Room wasn't cleaned til 430pm. We didn't get new towels.
- 2/5
ignored by staff at desk denied early check in when people next to me checked in early paid for parking but lot was full when returned at night overall place needs a facelift
- 3/5
Front desk staff want very welcoming. Parking is limited. The hotel seems dark and dated and definitely needs some renovation. They are in the process of doing that now so some noise related to that….I might stay there again but not until the renovations are done. In the meantime, I’d stay elsewhere.

Beautiful, great location The front desk staff when calling after my stay regarding a charge. They hung up on me twice

Staff is so nice at this hotel. You cannot beat the location if you are coming for anything connected with UVA. Comfortable and safe Rooftop bar looks very inviting!!

Convenient location near the hospital
- 5/5
Staff is top notch!!! This is my go to place any time that I stay in Charlottesville.
- 4/5
Very student and student family oriented. Personnel is nice and efficient. Location is walkable for visiting the area if you like to walk.
- 4/5
Pros and Cons. Pros: excellent customer service. Excellent location near UVA and The Corner. Walkable and close to restaurants. Beds are superior for comfort. Rooftop bar and restaurant were good. Good coffee in the lobby area. Cons: bathroom chrome handle came off the wall when used. Interiors and hallways/elevators are a bit dated. Getting our car from Valet using a QR code was not easy to do. Overall, our stay was positive.
- 3.5/5
Location was great Bathroom was needing shower attention Coffee in lobby should be included Parking was expensive! Parking Gym was so hot ! Weights missing, no cleaning cloths . Bartender did not really understand how to make drinks
- 4/5
Loved the rooftop bar, great space to relax after a long day.
- 1.5/5
The staff was not friendly. The room category I booked was not available. I had to insist that I get the room I paid for and then they finally “found” a room in the category I booked. The common areas (elevator) not swept. There was dirt, garbage on floor
- 4/5
I stay at the Graduate whenever I have meetings at the University of Virginia. Walking distant to campus, food, shops. Safe and usually quiet - only draw-back this visit was some low renovation noise during business hours.
- 2/5
The bathroom had not been updated in many many years. There were homeless people outside of the hotel sitting in the door frames. Not what I've experienced at any Graduate hotels ever.
- 2.5/5
Air conditioning needs improvement.
- 4/5
Very clean, but the bed had no mattress cover. The rooftop bar and outdoor balcony are the best part of the hotel. Very friendly and welcoming staff.
- 5/5
The highlight for me was the rooftop bar and restaurant...caught a full rainbow after a major storm rolled thru!
- 5/5
Very unique and boutiquey. Clean and staff was extraordinarily friendly and helpful.
- 2/5
Really poor experience sadly. Didnt have the type of room we booked when we arrived. Rooms are old and super dark/dingy and smell smoky. Have stayed in worse but given the price point a terrible value
- 4/5
The air conditioning in our room did not maintain the temperature correctly. It would go on and the room temperature would be comfortable but as soon as the very noisy unit cycled off, it would be extremely uncomfortable in the room. The front desk staff was friendly, helpful, and polite. This is our go to hotel when visiting family in C'ville and had always been great, but not so much this stay.
- 2/5
They were not helpful at all and the restaurant’s service and food was awful. I went up the the restaurant and ordered food to take back to my room. Waited an hour and my food finally came out but I had to wait another 10 minutes for the dessert. When I got back to my room and opened it up the steak and fries were cold. The steak was one the toughest piece of meat I’ve had. Also, the server gave me little plastic silverware! Also the brownie was so hard and crunchy, the only thing I could eat was the melted ice cream. When I was done I went down to the lobby to get some water. I told the staff about my experience. He obviously didn’t care. He said that’s too bad and that will be $4.00 for your water. I will never stay there again! There was one person that was very helpful and friendly. He went out of his way to help me. He was the gentleman that was handling valet parking. Save some money and govdown the street to Marriott where they actually care about your experience!!!
- 5/5
Awesome location and very friendly and helpful staff
- 2/5
The King room I paid for was not available when we checked in. Pretty disappointed. The staff seemed indifferent.
- 5/5
Nice location
- 4/5
the location is great. very pleasant staff. parking was easy. the bed was comfortable, room clean. i always feel safe at the graduate. we loved the rooftop bar. i think the room felt a bit tired. i've stayed in many graduates and i love the concept. this was the least nice of the five or six i've stayed in.
- 3/5
Excellent location, friendly staff, but broken lighting fixtures made the room very dark, making the hotel room feel much older. Beds were stained, with an odd scent that further contributed to the old feel experience.
- 3/5
Staff was a little indifferent.
- 5/5
A really cute hotel!
- 1/5
Very poor
- 2/5
very expensive parking a huge issue bed very uncomfortable dated dirty
- 2/5
Not like - the room furniture was a wreck. Shower stall rotted. Window frame totally janked. Generally the facilities were waaay below expectations for almost $300/ night. Coffee bar in lobby was sad looking and the food was bad.
- 3/5
needs upating
- 4/5
Great location right on the corner and an easy walk from campus. It seemed a little like a makeover of some old hotel with kitschy decor trying to achieve an antiquey look but really just covering up some outdated bathroom floors and showers. Did not feel luxe for the more expensive price tag. You’re paying for the location. Went up to the 9th floor for the bar/restaurant. The lights were on, TV was on, no bartender or people. We waited a good bit of time and no one ever came. Valet service was spotty. Would have been quicker to just get our own car.
- 2/5
The man at the reception was wonderful, but the parking was awful (under construction and we got stuck getting out). The room was a bit shabby, but ok, until we tried to sleep. Every time the air system came on it sounded like a medium sized rodent was scrambling around inside the system. It woke me up about every 1/2 hour. Could not wait to check out!
- 5/5
It feels cozy & comfy. Not sterile & the vibe of a chain hotel.
- 5/5
Amazing from check in to check out. Toby was so helpful and nice. We had a great experience.
- 4.5/5
Room + location was great! Bed was very comfortable bed and liked the desk in the room. Bathroom was also very nice Had to pay for parking! Was not happy about that and surprised it's not included - also we had to leave at 5:45 am and the cafe did not open for coffee until 6pm
- 3.5/5
Feels dated all around
- 3/5
The property is in a great area and close to many restaurants and bars. It was also walkable to JPJ. The rooms are dated. The air unit was extremely noisy all night and we were unable to adjust the temperature.
- 4/5
I could have done without the fish hanging above the beds but that is probably a me thing and not a Hilton thing.
- 4/5
to when washing feet etc. Easy to slip for seniors like me. Also very difficult to turn on shower without getting sprayed with hot or cold water due to sliding glass panel next to shower control locked/immobile. However staff very understanding/helpful and worked to resolve the shower issue, All in all a very pleasant stay.
- 1/5
Clearly the managers of this property did not Graduate from hospitality school. The lobby area is shabby, the halls are shabby, and the rooms are shabby. The decor of the hotel seems to be in the style of College Dorm Trash, perhaps they were actually sourced from college dorm dumpsters. Breakfast is non existent and the coffee shop provides warm dishwasher and sponges on buns for your only option. Stay away from this dump of a hotel.
- 3/5
The room was dirty!!!! Carpets were dirty, dust and lint all over the carpet and room, stains it was just dirty and very disappointing as we had no other choice for a hotel it was family weekend. I would not stay here again!
- 3/5
I thought the property seemed a little bit run down for the price
- 2/5
We had construction directly outside of our window. We thought it would be over on Friday- but the banging on our window continued. In fact it started at 10am
- 5/5
Fast check in, great location, clean hotel!
- 2/5
The hotel room was extremely dirty and the thermostat did not work properly, plus the fan (used for both heating and cooling was very loud). At first I was given one room, the door/room key in that room was not working, and the second room I was given had not been cleaned properly.
- 5/5
The staff is so friendly

This is a 3-star hotel. It smells like cigarettes, doesn't offer the amenities of a 4-star hotel, the staff at the front desk was not kind or helpful. Major disappointment for the hefty price tag. Courtyard by Marriott is far nicer.
- 4/5
Staff was pleasant
- 2/5
Stains on carpet, aged interior
- 5/5
no cup in the bathroom
- 3/5
Staff was friendly/helpful and the location was very convenient. Room was a bit disappointing though for the price tag of $300 (bed and linens were really bad). Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re getting a really good deal.
- 5/5
This property is a unique option in a sea of traditional hotels in the area. Love the decor, easy parking with in/out, and a fabulous rooftop patio and bar that made our trip with awesome views of the surrounding mountains. You need to try it!
- 5/5
Perfect location
- 5/5
Central location.
- 5/5
My wife loved the bed. The breakfast offerings in the hotel were very limited, and the rooftop restaurant likewise had a imited menu--most sandwiches.
- 4/5
Right across from UVA. It was a good location.
- 4/5
However at check in I was greeted to the shock of a $50/night charge for “incidentals” resulting in a $300 extra charge for my 6 night stay. I was told it would be refunded a few days after stay. Never got a $20 voucher. My key cards periodically wouldn’t work (3x during my week long stay).
- 4/5
It is a nice property, well located with respect to the University of Virginia. The hotel has only limited bar food at a rooftop bar. There are numerous food options within walking distance, but the majority are college average college fare - pizza, burgers, wings, etc. The Virginian - about a 5-minute walk - has some better options. The carpeting in the hotel is getting a bit old, but is kept vacuumed. We would stay there again!
- 5/5
Staff was friendly and very helpful. Great view from the rooftop.
- 4/5

- 5/5
Never disappointed with The Graduate. Nice rooms. Super convenient location and walkable to everything
- 5/5

- 3/5
Again withoutWendy at the desk, the stay would have been very distressing .
- 5/5
The hotel is charming, close to restaurants, coffee and shops. The rooftop deck is lovely and has a great view.

Location
- 5/5
Nice place.
- 3/5
The location of the hotel was convenience and the rooms and hotel was clean. The parking garage is attached to the hotel which is convenient. The front desk staff were not that impressive and could not offer any advice on restaurants or general questions about the area.
- 4/5
Good location for UVa meetings. Overall, the hotel seemed a bit worn, but when on business by myself, I only care that the hotel is clean and safe, since most of the time I'm there, I'm asleep. The Graduate staff was courteous and friendly, and the overall experience was good.
- 2/5
I booked this very last minute due to a family emergency and needing to be close to UVA hospital. Location was ideal. I didn’t have the luxury of time to research ahead of time, so it was unexpected to have to pay an extra $22/day to park my car. The entire parking system is just plain awful. You pay at a kios. My receipt ripped while printing. I didn’t think it was a big deal until the front desk said there was nothing they could do for me, redirected me to the valet, who directed me to call the help number on the screen, which was the number to the hotel. If booking through a 3rd party site such as Hotels.com front desk is extremely unhelpful in any situation. The hotel room was moderately clean. There was a broken lamp, plugs that didn’t work, and some of the art in the room appeared to have been defaced. I opted for the graduate as I had stayed another of their locations for a work conference and had a wonderful experience. I can promise that the only redeeming quality of this hotel was the distance to the hospital and local stores and restaurants, which I imagine is why it’s so much more expensive that other hotels in the area. Be warned, there is no complimentary coffee or tea, unless you like the instant granulated left in your room with a tea kettle. Completely unimpressed. Would not recommend unless you needed the location.

Creatively decorated space!

We loved staying at the Graduate for our first visit to Charlottesville. Our only complaint was that the light bulb in the bathroom was out making the lighting a little dim and the shower didn’t have a place to put shower necessities like a washcloth or toiletries. Our AC didn’t get quite get as cold as we like but Nothing major at all! It was clean, the staff and valet were friendly and felt historical and cozy.

The roof top bar, restaurant and sitting area was a great way to end our evening. Staff were very friendly. We hope to be back.

We enjoyed our stay

One slight minus is that the table tennis table could have had better paddles and more balls.

Great service at the front desk and valet. We enjoyed the trophy room and rooftop balcony also.

Great location next to the U of Virginia. Quirky hotel with maybe some minor issues (like the quality of pillows). Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would stay here again.

Nice place a little worn for the price they charge. Felt it was a great hotel, but at $300+ a night it was a bit pricey for what it was. Of it were $200 gove or take wouldnt have had an issue. But it was the cute and quirky boutique vibeI had hoped for and the room was clean and well appointed.

Hotel was okay. Restaurant had limited options, but decent food and good service. Next to some dining options with short walk. Convenient to UVA.

I have a great stay. My only complaint was that the AC wouldn't cool the room very well. Other than that everything was great.

Excellent location next to UVA to come and visit

Friendly staff, excellent amenities

Very nice hotel. Very convenient to the Lawn. Love the roof top bar and restaurant.

The shower door was not properly installed- one door could not be moved. The shower drain grate was loose and askew. There was mold on the bathroom caulk. There were no drawers to store clothes-just an empty cabinet. The restaurant was poor with limited food options.

Loved it

Only one time they made one bed.

Convenient and close to everything. Friendly staff

Loved the decor - an eclectic variety of artwork and furnishings that made the space unique. Close to lots of great things in downtown Charlottesville.

The shower was very small and hard to regulate the temperature in the room using the thermostat. Couldn’t seem to get it just right. Either was too hot or too cold. Didn’t see any instructions on to contact the front desk if needed. There was no microwave in my room. Size of the room was very nice and the staff was friendly.

Service was horrible. Tried to call the front desk for towels , 4 times no answer. The two restaurants on site the staff was awful. Roof top served a drink with mold on the garnish. Not impressed.

All good, the only issue really was that the air conditioner could not cool the room sufficiently on 80 degree days. But the room was still comfortable enough to sleep without the duvet.

I have stayed at other “Graduate” properties and was excited to stay at the Charlottesville location. The location is good and convenient to grounds. The lobby is fine. The hotel was previously a Red Roof Inn and the guest room felt like a slightly updated version. The tile in the bathroom was dingy, the trim was cheap, the room decor was lame (especially compared to how cute the Nashville rooms look), and the AC moved air but didn’t cool. As one friend said, it felt like they “put lipstick on a pig.” I will choose another hotel for my next visit to Charlottesville. I do want to add that this review is not a reflection of the staff- the front desk and everyone else was friendly and our room was ready upon arrival.

A bit outdated. Gym had a terrible odor. Good location.
- 2/5
Needs renovations and cleaned up a bit, additionally our rooms ac didn’t work at all the entire trip. Room floors were disgusting and sticky, view overlooked a generator and a park structure which was hideous, expensive for what you got. The bar had bad service
- 5/5
I give this hotel 5 stars for its location. The hotel is obviously well used and busy all the time. Broken tiles in our bathroom. No recycle bin in our room for cans and paper? The rooftop bar was completely understaffed - 1 person for the whole area to take food and drink orders? Front desk served the purpose and nothing more.

Parking was SUPER convenient and had a Tesla charger, but expensive at $25/day. Great facilities and the staff was trying, but the rooftop bar closed early and couldn’t get its kitchen working. Location is SO convenient I’ll definitely return. Perhaps some staffing issues? Everyone was kind.

Great location, nostalgic aesthetic, clean comfy room.

Negatives: Noisy temperature control, coffee in room v.bad
- 3/5
Accommodations were average - not bad, not great. No room service. Lobby cafe was very limited. Short staffed at desk, cafe and valet. Was at risk of missing my flight because valet was nowhere to be found for half an hour.
- 5/5
Excellent service, comfortable common spaces for hanging out, eating take-out or playing games. Location was FANTASTIC for touring UVA campus.

The face of the hotel, the lobby and the rooftop bar are fine...updated I guess. But the rest of the hotel is tired. The hallways smell and the EXTREMELY slow elevator feels like it is going to give out, creaking and shaking the entire time. The bed was nice and clean but the room itself was just so old and grimy feeling. A large microwave was just sitting on the desk - weird. The bathroom vanity was fine but the shower was ancient and clogged, no working fan, no tissues in the tissue box. I just really felt like a little lipstick had been thrown on whatever "past-its-prime hotel" that had been there before. Very disappointed. I will stay at the Marriott one block further next time I am in Charlottesville. I had very little staff interaction but no complaints there - it is the property that needs TLC, but the service was fine.

Nice room. Didn’t have hair dryer in room. I called for one and order was put in but it didn’t come by the time I checked out. Lighting in room wasn’t very bright. Self parking was confusing. I got charged twice.

Good location.

Joshua was amazing! Helped us check in and get sorted. Very pleased with this place!!

Easy walk to UVA. Clean and comfortable room. The refrigerator isn't very cold. That is my only complaint.
