Reviews
Guests consistently praise the historic charm and convenient location of this property, as well as the attentive and friendly staff. The breakfast is frequently highlighted as a standout feature. However, some guests have noted issues with the pillows being too hard and the breakfast not offering enough daily choices.

It was a great stay
- 5/5
Quiet location providing easy walking to most of the historic and museum sites as well as restaurants aplenty. Charleston provides a downtown area shuttle (DASH) if walking is an issue. Good included breakfast with many options. Friendly staff. The accommodations are not opulent but they're comfortable and enjoyable. The draw is the history of the building and the area. The other guests were all friendly. No one was there with a "one percenter attitude."

Hospitality at its absolute finest! The small details make a huge difference. You definitely feel like you’re in the upper echelon of society while staying there. Centrally located but yet you feel like you’re far away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Tea time was a nice treat in the afternoon and breakfast options are the same as a diner.

If I had to choose one word to describe my stay here, it would be phenomenal! From the moment I walked into this amazing, beautiful, historic home, I was greeted with joy by the staff, especially Nicole, who went above and beyond to make my stay delightful. The service was impeccable, with incredible breakfasts, Maria, the chef, made the best poached eggs I’ve ever had. The turn-down service and housekeeping were top-notch, room was spotless and dust free. Tea Time was also amazing, and they wonderfully accommodated my gluten-free needs, making the experience even more special. A special touch was the nightcap waiting for me upon my return in the evening, featuring amazing brandy, port, and sherry. The location is perfect for exploring the best points of interest in historic Charleston, all within walking distance. This has been the most exceptional experience I’ve ever had.

Nicky welcomed us in. Such a friendly & family environment. Also Gabby, Maurice kitchen staff, and cleaning staff too. We started with an early morning having breakfast we enjoyed very much, choosing our meals every night. Shopping 🛍️ is close if you love shopping. Cafe place we did most of our stay was walking distance Souralle. Ru Ru we enjoyed ice cafe and pizza. We walking to the pier, pineapple 🍍. We want to return again next year. We loved it . Especially the Jacuzzi we had a blast .. we loved everything from 116 John R. We can't wait to return. Quiet place.

People were extremely cordial and helpful. We loved the afternoon cocktail time. Also breakfast was either served in the upstairs parlor, in your room or back patio and was always freshly prepared. Proximity of walking distances was very manageable. Overall we had a wonderful time. Definately would go back.

Much of the staff were rude, inappropriate, and truly unhelpful. Gay couples are not treated well. Unprofessional behavior on the part of staff, including management, ruined what should have been a nice short getaway. I would add more detail, but Hotels.com keeps rejecting reviews with specifics.

Quaint and very quiet on the edge of the French Quarter within walking distance of most attractions. We had breakfast in our spacious bedroom but were given the option of eating in the lobby or outside. Concierge staff was highly attentive and very helpful. Nice workout facility located a 10 minute walk away at discounted cost. 4:30 - 6 PM tea and gourmet snacks were a great plus. We will definately return. No dislikes

Everything about The John Rutledge was very well done. We were even given an upgrade to a beautiful 2nd floor room in the main house. The house itself was carefully appointed in period furnishings, though thankfully the seated was contemporary & comfortable. Our only criticism was with the quality of breakfast, though pretty well prepared & mostly basic fare with not very "memorable" daily specials, and despite designating items + time, etc. the night before, it arrived often not fresh from the kitchen, entree items not exceedingly freshly prepared with several other side items sealed in plastic wrap. All ordered items arriving at the same time.

We fled to Charleston for some southern charm and warmth in December. The people and weather cooperated perfectly. The hotel was fantastic and the staff was totally top notch. Customer service at its best!

The staff was amazing and very accommodating. The location is perfect and in within walking distance of nearly all of Charleston. I enjoyed the rich history of the house as well.

The John Rutledge House was located a block away from the French District in lower Charleston. It is full of history and beautiful detailing. Just minutes away from fine dining (82 Queen, Husk, Poogan's Porch, etc.) and in the heart of the antiques and art galleries. Jim was an excellent concierge who worked with us prior to our arrival and during our stay.

Wonderful! Margo and the staff were absolutely top notch. Can't wait to stay there again - the inn itself has a history we weren't even aware of upon booking. Very luxurious, perfect location. Can highly recommend.

The concierge, Jim, was absolutely brilliant. He is a great front of house and a real asset to the place. The location was superb and it was great to walk everywhere in this beautiful, historical town. The history of the hotel is very interesting and tea and snacks are served between 4pm and 6pm daily which is a lovely detail as was the complimentary chilled water. Our room was really comfortable and well appointed. We just felt that some attention to detail was slightly lacking. Small points but we had breakfast on the terrace on metal chairs. No cushions offered. The table mats looked slightly grubby and the food itself was pretty basic. I mention this as you are paying the kind of rates you would pay in a top hotel and for the price we expected a really tasty breakfast and more attention to detail and service.

The staff was large for such a small place, well trained gracious and efficient. Breakfast with many choices was served in the dining room, in one's room, or in the courtyard. I would stay here again, and again!

Stayed in Ashley Carriage house. It's an original structure that was built with main house. Close to all the shops and restaraunts. If you enjoy history then this is the place for you.

We stayed in the smaller back building that was being remodeled. The room was small but clean. Parking was not great. The main house had a nice ballroom that was really just a large parlor. We ate a nice served breakfast on the upper veranda of the parlor. Romantic and nice view of Charleston. Good location. Overall a good experience.

This was a terrific B&B. The room was lovely, as was the rest of the property. The only challenge was that our room was downstairs, and there is no elevator, as it is a historic home. But, the staff was willing to assist us in any way we needed. They were also great at giving directions and recommendations for attractions. The breakfast itself was delicious. Would definitely come back here!

Loved every minute of our stay! Staying in such a historic house is exciting under any circumstances, but the restoration and condition of the John Rutledge House was just wonderful. Our room was large and beautifully appointed including a working fireplace!! As if that wasn't enough, the staff was top notch. Every person we came in contact with could not have treated us better. Knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. If you are in Charleston, you will be in for a treat when you stay here. We will definitely be back.

Nice location for walking about Charleston. Very nice historical inn. Breakfast was good but not at the level of other B&Bs/inns we have stayed at. Room was on the "first" floor -- most below ground. I'd ask for a higher floor. Overall, no real issues, we just expected more blue for the high cost.

We had two days in Charleston and appreciated the staff all of whom were helpful and took time to determine what we were interested in doing among the very many options. Our walking tour with Ann Middleton was fabulous as were the restaurants located near the John Rutledge House. The carriage house on the grounds was lovely and just right for Charleston.

Wonderful staff, lovely room, just like the picture, delicious breakfast! At first finding the parking lot was a challenge, but once there it was just fine.
