Reviews
The hotel staff is consistently praised for their friendliness and helpfulness. However, the property is frequently criticized for being outdated, worn, and in need of refurbishment.

- Outdated and worn property

Location of the property is great and staff were super welcoming and helpful. Maid staff was very nice and thorough - rooms were clean. But overall hotel is very tired and worn with stained, torn and loose carpets in rooms and common areas, wood doors and fixtures are badly scuffed and chipped and bathroom showing its age, tv has no streaming and outlets need to be replaced - overall refresh is desperately needed. While staff is top notch from front desk to maid service to valet and bartender - condition of property is run down and not up to brand standards for Embassy Suites.

Shower leak constantly, couch with worn out, paint needed touch up, palmetto bugs, staff unable to handle volume of people for happy hour.

Location is ideal, staff are friendly, polite and southern hospitality rings true, here! Quality breakfasts were enjoyed and afternoon southern snack happy hour was a nice touch to greet travelers & exchange stories. Provide water to guests was very helpful given the heat! Clean, inviting & yes, we would definitely stay here again. Thank you y’all!

I enjoyed a week at Embassy suites, it was a perfect home for the annual art festival, Spoleto. All staff members were excellent, including valet, evening reception hosts and bartenders, housekeeping, and breakfast room staff, but Tristan really stands out. He was always there to greet me with a big smile and ask how we were, and what more he could do to make our visit memorable. He was so gracious at check in, and offered us an early check in that happened to be available. His recommendations were spot on - he knows where to find the good seafood. He has a big bright presence that lights up the floor. Thank you Embassy and THANK YOU TRISTAN 🌟! We will definitely return.

Fantastic location. Great walking distance to so many good restaurants on either side of king-- parking garages. Only a block away even though I parked in the street. It's actually the room was bigger than I anticipated. It was only me for the couch, the microwave, the sitting there was pretty cool to have-- I'm saving up to go back. I really enjoyed it. The staff was incredible

Location is great, property needs or be updated.

Best to set your expectations from the start. Just because the name HILTON is attached to this property, it does not mean that it meets HILTON standards. It is a very old property that once was a Citadel used for military dorms. There is nothing upscale about this property. Housekeeping does come daily to make beds and change out towels which was nice. The complimentary breakfast was very good. There is always a concierge on site who can help, but be warned, he will try to sign you up for Hilton rewards, etc. The location was great, and we could walk everywhere. There is limited street parking so if you rented a car, Valet is $50/day.
- 5/5
The place was great but I won't use Hotels.com for future bookings. They gave me a hard time on another booking when they neglected to make the reservation and didn't want to refund my payment. Over an hour on the phone after a long drive!

Location The biggest strength of the Embassy Suites Charleston Historic District is its location. You can walk to virtually everything Charleston has to offer, making it an ideal base for exploring the city. I also love the unique design of the hotel. The open courtyard concept with guest rooms surrounding the interior space creates a beautiful atmosphere, and the suite layout is generous with a separate bedroom, living area, and plenty of room to spread out. What disappoints me is the condition of the property. I fully appreciate that this is a historic building—the original Citadel dates back to 1829—but historic should not mean neglected. The hotel charges premium rates (our two-night stay was over $1,100), and at those prices guests should expect much better upkeep. Our room felt extremely dated. The bathroom wallpaper was peeling, there were visible stains and signs of wear, and surprisingly there wasn’t even a convenient towel rack for hand towels or bath towels. The furniture and cabinetry showed significant age and wear. While the room appeared to be cleaned, the outdated finishes created a constant impression that things were worn out and not particularly fresh. Unfortunately, the problems went beyond appearance. Upon arrival there was no valet available, and nowhere during booking or check-in was it communicated that valet reservations were apparently needed. Every other hotel during our trip managed this process far more smoothly. Even worse, one of the hotel’s two elevators was broken during our stay, and there wasn’t even a sign posted informing guests. When checking out, we waited nearly 20 minutes for the elevator before finally giving up and carrying all of our luggage down from the second floor ourselves. The hotel has enormous potential because the location and building itself are fantastic.

The staff was what made this place. If you are looking for a newly refurbished, perfect hotel - this isn’t it but it was very clean. They have a wonderful breakfast every morning - you can order your own omelette- and a happy hour every evening - two free drink tickets each night. But the best part by far is the staff. Helpful, efficient, friendly. I cannot say enough about them. Just incredible people working their tails off - and with a smile. Loved our stay here. Oh and, it used to be the Citadel and they have kept that vibe alive.
- 4/5
My sleeper sofa needs a new mattress
- 5/5
This hotel is part of history. Originally was a warehouse where tobacco was stored, then became Citadel & now a hotel. Very friendly staff especially Trey at the front desk. Spacious rooms. Drinks & light snacks are offered 5:30-7:30 everyday. Breakfast was good. I would definitely stay here again on my next visit to Charleston
- 4/5
Room was clean for the most part, but in need of some renovations. There was alot of dust on the walls below the a/c vents and there were parts of the wallpaper that looked stained.

Breakfast was good and staff were helpful. However, the furniture in the premium room was dated, which was disappointing.
- 4/5
A word of warning to folks who are challenged getting up from low seats: All the sofas, easy chairs. and the toilet in our room were all low. You sit IN them.
- 2/5
The hotel was nice in its day, but has been let go. It’s obvious that the management doesn’t care because the staff sure doesn’t. Most things didnt work in the room. The air conditioning didn’t condition, the iron didn’t work and even the toilet lid wouldn’t stay up. The couch was uncomfortable as were the pillows. At least it was noisy, so sleeping was also a challenge. The staff put up signs saying the main area was “closed for event”. We were there for three days and there was never an event. The one thing it has going for it is the location- Charleston is beautiful and you are front and center to enjoy it.

The exterior of the hotel and lobby is beautiful. We stayed in room 400 and it desperately needs a refurbishing. We opened the door to our room and had a conference room table and white board to our right. My room had a window and three doors (two double doors and one to a hallway). My sister's room did not have a window. The bathroom in my room was in need of tile repair. The couch and carpet in the main room was stained. Overall, disappointed for the price we paid.
- 5/5
The staff was great at this hotel. I do think the hotel is a little dated and some of the room could use some renovations (bathroom). The sofa bed definitely needs to be replaced
- 2/5
This hotel is clean but OLD! The fridge was not plugged in, the furniture beat up and NO water pressure in the shower. Also no SmartTV in the room and the trash truck woke us up at 4am with flashing lights through the broken blinds and parked literally beside our bedroom to empty a dumpster. Sounded like a bomb went off! Very close to shopping and downtown amenities but otherwise just very old, dated hotel.
- 4/5
Great location. Our key card would not work the first afternoon so we went to the complimentary happy hour and when we went back to our room the problem was fixed. The complimentary breakfast was great. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
- 2/5
Breakfast was great ever time. Did not drive but the valet service seemed very nice. Sadly we could hear just about everything from outside our room. Did see a cockroach inside, just one but yeah. Most of the staff were very nice though. Several doors leading outside but were undetermined if useable. Some were exit only. Not much of a gift shop too and very high prices.

The breakfast staff were great. Front desk team was very helpful and had a very good suggestion for a BBQ place near the hotel. Great happy hour. The Valets were very fast and friendly. The not so good. Rooms are not cleaned daily. Came back to our room at the end of the day and garbage was not remove and we had wet towels. At least we should have had fresh towels. Reserved a room with a park view. The window was at least 6 feet from the ground. You cannot look out the window without climbing up. The bedroom was all brick. Felt like a prison cell. The two concierge were not very good. Made it seem like they had helpful info. The first one gave us generic info we already had about the area. Then asked us to buy vacation packages. You are told when you use the vacation package you will have to listen to a vacation club presentation at the property. Said we would think about it and could not make a money decision without looking at all the details. Then the hard press. This is the last day of the month and I cant give you this rate tomorrow. Said let us think about it. She said I leaving at 11:00 so you will have to decide now. Next morning a different concierge tried to do the same to my wife not realizing we were together. No is no. Makes you feel uncomfortable. You cant go to the concierge without fearing a sales pitch.

- 5/5
It was convenient walking distance to the college. Very welcoming employees and I received a text asking if we were in need of anything, even though I had put up a do not disturb sign, however, I did need extra towels and responded and they delivered accordingly. The building is old and charming. Can it use a facelift, especially the bathrooms, yes, but overall, it was a good stay and I’d stay there again. Excellent breakfast also and they held our baggage after checkout which was very convenient.

Staff was excellent I did have an issue with my bath tub faucet not turning off and ended up having to change rooms the staff responded quickly to help get the issue resolved
- 5/5
Breakfast was great! No restaurant on site or room service.
- 3/5
The hotel is in a great location, so we could walk everywhere, which was what we wanted, but I was pretty disappointed in the hotel as a whole. It's old, and not just old as in historic. This hotel is in dire need of a remodel top to bottom. The furniture looks like it came straight out of my great grandmothers home, stains and all. The carpet is old, worn, and stained in many places, and it just feels kind of junky instead of classically reflective of the period. The worst part was that our bedroom did not have a window. It was a cave. We didn't really settle in until late in the day, so I didn't think about this until day two, which I thought was too late to request a room change. Again, I understand the building is old, but I very much doubt Charleston building codes don't require a secondary egress for a bedroom/hotel suite. Needless to say, other than sleeping, I spent every moment at the hotel outside, by the pool, which was a comfortable place to be.

Excellent breakfast, loved the free happy hour. The staff was very nice but pushy about signing on for Hilton vacations. The rooms could use an update, maybe move to floors without carpeting. Tv’s did not work.
- 3/5
Close location to Charleston Music Hall and restaurants we love + great shopping for those who enjoy same.. Bed was comfortable & bedding was clean & fresh. TV worked (there were 2; we used only 1) & got an array of channels. Breakfast buffet was excellent. Tasty & fresh with a superb variety of foods for a relaxing Southern breakfast. Valets and desk staff were gracious. Room had only 1 outlet to charge devices (we had 4) …and we had to move a table & lamp to reach it. (A 2nd outlet under a desk in the bedroom did not work after literally standing on our head to attempt a connection). Decor was dated & rather depressing. Neutral colors with cracks, repairs, paint streaks (bland beige) obvious. Hilton should shut it down off-season and—at the least- spruce it up with major crack repairs, total repainting in more vibrant colors. Hang some pleasing art in the room as that on display near Reception & the breakfast room.

Check-in was easy and front desk staff were friendly. The ability to have a made to order breakfast was a great perk that we took full advantage of. The lady helping with breakfast was bright and cheerful each morning. We enjoyed her company. We also enjoyed happy hour each day. A great way to relax after walking all day. Valet staff were super nice and prompt. We arrived early before check in. Our bags were kept safe and car was securely parked while we enjoyed Charleston. Beds and linens were comfy. Hotel is close to all the city has to offer. This was our second stay here and will stay again when visiting Charleston.
- 5/5
Needs new carpet along walkway to rooms.
- 3/5
Furniture in our room seemed to be from the 60’s. The A/C was ancient and we couldn’t dial in a comfortable temperature. The evening reception snacks were not quite as good as what I could get on an airplane. On the good side, the staff was very helpful and friendly and the breakfast was very good.

Menu fresh but paltry, staff at breakfast good. Cleaning staff ok. Reception area staff appallingly unhelpful except for Tristan

Great breakfast, friendly staff and valet
- 5/5
The breakfast buffer was amazing. The daily evening reception was a wonderful surprise. Very generous serving on both. Te parking was nice to have in/out service but occasionally had to wait for 10-15 minutes for the car. The price of valet was a bit more than I would expect as well. The shower was hard to get hot water. The dial was not regulated normally so the best was very warm.
- 3/5
The woman who checked us in was very brusque and standoffish. She also lied about our room being quiet as it was right on the street across from a restaurant with a loud bar at night. Our room had old AC that just had a knob that said "cool or heat" (not digital) and when we turned it to cool, it made a high-pitched sound. Thus we had to deal with a hot room in order to avoid that unpleasant sound. Otherwise, the bed and pillows were comfortable and the rest of the staff were nice.

The property was very dated but great location and many cool offerings like bottled water an daily happy hour
- 3/5
The property is definitely in need of some refurbishing. The staff is amazing and the amenities are as good as other hotels. The rooms are very old and and there is too much carpet everywhere. Not a bad spot but not great
- 5/5
Great breakfast options including made to order omelettes.
- 2/5
Breakfast was fresh, the omelet cook was rude, valet was friendly, front desk/hpusekeepung was disorganized, building was old and we encountered a large roach in the lobby
- 4/5
You have to be kidding we stayed at the original Citadel. That being said the place really needs sprucing up. Peeling paint and stained carpets everywhere. Awesome location. Central to everything. Bed was one of the better ones we've slept on.
- 3/5
The property was dated. Everything was ild & worn. Pets are allowed and it smelled like dog. The staff was so nice that it bothered me less.
- 3/5
Hotel is stuck in a time capsule. If you are staying for one to two nights you can deal with the dilapidated rooms.
- 3/5
Very mediocre on all accounts
- 2/5
Don’t mind old. But falling apart is a different story. Needs refreshed very badly.
- 3/5
Property did not match photos. Lack of windows in the bedrooms was not great.

Staff was very good, room needs an update.
- 4/5
Overall, people were friendly and professional. Location is a great plus. However, the room, especially the restroom and furniture needs to be upgraded. this would have a higher rating if the restroom was in better condition. Everything was fairly clean just very outdated.

Stay there for a girls trip and it was just perfect. The building itself is so gorgeous in historic next to a beautiful park with a lot of open grass area where locals spend some time and sun bathe. The hotel offers one breakfast daily snack, snacks, and happy hour which is amazing. The staff were always friendly and attentive. Had a wonderful experience.

The location. The room was well below par. It looked like a motel off the highway, shabby and worn. I have written to Booking.com and to the hotel about the problems I encountered checking in - no one has responded. I had been told Booking.com did not transmit my reservation and had to pay twice, still waiting for refund. Also, the hotel conceals that paying for valet parking does not mean a full day, just until checkout. A total rip-off.

Great location to walk around the town. Hotel breakfast was good. Nice to have a free happy hour. Clean rooms, but the furniture needs updated.
- 3/5
Apparently the building was the original Citadel, however there was no information on the history of it anywhere in the building and none of the staff (I asked 4 different people who worked the desk) knew anything about it. A missed opportunity to elevate a mediocre property in a historic town. Complimentary happy hour was a nice touch,

The only reason that this is not one star is because the staff during the breakfast every morning was fantastic. Otherwise housekeeping was truly a problem. For the entirety of our stay they did not clean our room nor did they offer fresh towels, water, coffee, etc. Also to end the stay on a very sour note, we left a laptop charger in the room and immediately notified both the front desk as well as the head of housekeeping (via voicemail) that the charger had been left and a number where I could be reached. as of today it is almost a week later and we still have not received at least a courtesy call back with an update on status.

The parking situation was another mess. We were told valet was $50 or we could self-park across the street — but no one mentioned that the garage was city parking with separate fees. When we parked there, the attendant was extremely rude and accused us of lying about being directed there by the hotel, saying we “obviously didn’t know what we were doing.” Not exactly the welcome you want after traveling. The room itself felt outdated, dark, and underwhelming. The only bright spot was the breakfast, which was actually very nice. Overall, the experience was frustrating and not what I expect from Embassy Suites.

When I spoke to the front desk, they said they’re not spending any money on the hotel because they’re getting ready to make it a curio collection by Hilton. But it’s obvious that the Bennett who owned the hotel built a luxury hotel next-door and just ignored this property for years. It’s a dump! Do not stay here. Do not stay here. Do not stay here unless you don’t care about your health. Toothpaste on the walls toothpaste on the floors fixture is falling out of the shower. It’s a mess!

I have stayed at several Embassy Suites, and this one is well below brand standard. Its a great location, but I would not stay here again until at least the rooms have been renovated...my room was very musty, and the furnishings are very tired. On the plus side, the valets have some parking to play with, so it is superior to the other downtown hotels if you are someone who drives and dislikes the hassles of curbside valet.

The room was spotless and the staff very courteous. The interior could use some TLC but was not bad. We were surprised upon check in to find the valet parking and parking at a garage down the street were the only options at $48/night. It's not mentioned in the hotel description or reviews that I found. Plenty of restaurants close by.

The room was in good condition but the mattresses were horrible. Minimum contact with staff. Parking was a shocker been a valet, I like access to my car as I want and not to ask permission for it.

Rooms were clean. I liked that our room had a door to the sleeping area- it sure kept the noise down and we slept well. It is an older hotel and could use some updates. But the staff was great and breakfast was the best hotel breakfast I’ve ever has!

The breakfast and happy hour were good!!! The valet service was excellent!!!! Receptionists are also very friendly and kind!!!! It was cool to learn about the history behind this hotel! Overall convenient location, amazing staff, but they could make some improvements to the rooms themselves!
- 1/5
The room was absolutely nothing compared to what the photos were. The room was not only nasty and dated but also had serious maintenance issues. I was extremely disappointed and wouldn’t recommend this property to anyone. I will say that I am convinced that we were put into the room we were in due to having two young children that were on the reservation. We had a ground floor room in the back of the property. I paid extra to have the larger room that had the view of the park but was extremely disappointed when I saw the dated filth that was given to us.
- 5/5
It was a nice place for the coast
- 5/5
- 2/5
Room was totally worn out. Downside: thread bare carpet, peeling paint, loose wallpaper, outlets loose in the walls, rattling doorknobs, rusty hinges, squeaky bed, toilet running, shower rod hanging on but barely. Defintely could have been cleaner. Upside: prime location, friendly staff, good breakfast, historic building, lots of hot water, good sized room, plenty of open space as far as common areas indoors.
- 3/5
The staff was wonderful. We could not have asked for better service and hospitality. The room was in bad shape. It looked like nothing had been updated since it was built. All the wood was terribly worn. It felt dated and dirty. The bathtub needed to be replaced as it was worn around the drain. When you took a shower, water still poured from the spigot below filling up the tub. After turning off the water, the tub slowly drained. We would not stay again for these reasons. We have always counted on Embassy Suites to hold to high standards with their rooms. This was very disappointing.
- 5/5
Amenities are great. Room very comfortable
- 5/5
Excellent
- 5/5
Staff, amenities and food/bar.
- 4/5
The room- outdated. The bathroom sink clogged. The bathroom floor dipped or was concave in the middle- made getting out of the tub sketchy-when stepping out on the bath mat- the bath mat would slide due to the dip in the floor. Soap debris on the edge of the tub. The room was neat however had an outdated worn look and feel.
- 5/5
the staff was very professional.
- 5/5
Omelets were made to order and fresh fruit was delicious. Staff was very nice and accommodating.
- 2/5
The hotel is very very old. The rooms are with carpet, dark, furniture also very old. I do not recommend this hotel.
- 4/5
Nice stay
- 4/5
Great service from the front desk, valet parking and the breakfast team!!
- 5/5
Very good. A wonderful experience.
- 5/5
Really enjoyed our visit and the king suite with the whirlpool was well worth it.
- 5/5
Overall good experience. Would definitely stay here again.
- 3/5
The hotel outside and in the lobby was nice. The rooms were very outdated and in poor condition..
- 5/5
Staff were all great, very helpful. Great breakfast and complimentary drinks in the evening. Great atmosphere overall. Conveniently located as well. Walking distance to many restaurants.
- 5/5
Loved everything about this property, the staff were kind and welcoming - helped us set up some activities we enjoyed in the city - the room was clean and serviceable (loved the re-purposed building from what this structures used to be, gave it a historical vibe), and all amenities were top-notch. The daily text message from our check-in clerk kept us tethered and able to bring things to their attention, if needed.
- 4/5
The hotel is a great location. The price is great. The hotel condition is good.
- 3/5
The hotel needs to up updated. Carpets, furniture need to be replaced. The sheets were rough( not typical of a Hilton property) The bed was otherwise comfortable. The room size was good. The breakfast was good with plenty of options. We did not find time to attend the evening cocktail hour. Housekeeping did a good job tidying the room daily. The person who checked us in was not pleasant, but the rest of the staff we encountered was nice and helpful.
- 4/5
Clean room and the staff. Hotel needs a lot of updates.
- 5/5
From the moment we walk in the door was welcome a large and I mean large arrangetof fresh flowers. The building itself was lovely cozy warm decorated beautifully. Rooms were large and spacious and in the heart of the histrionic district
- 5/5
My husband and I stayed 3 nights at the hotel. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by a very pleasant staff. The room was big and clean. The breakfast had a lot of options. What we really liked was that there was bottled water available for guests. My husband travels a lot for work, and he said that this was the first time there was free water. In addition, there was a happy hour with complimentary drinks! It was nice to sit, relax and have a beverage in the lobby. Finally, after talking to Justin, we booked multiple trips. We would definitely stay there again.
- 3/5
This historic hotel is located in the original Citadel building. It is conveniently located and has easy access to many historic sites. The staff is friendly; the breakfast is very good. The hotel is clean but needs an overall refresh. Rooms are clean, but tired. Carpet, furniture, overall condition in need of a significant facelift.
- 1/5
Breakfast was the best part. For such a nice hotel on the outside the inside doesnt no reflect the same. At 2 am our ceiling started leaking and we had to mive to a room two stories up. The staff was accomodating but the inside needs some TLC. Staaf gets 5 star hotels itself 1
- 5/5
Great place.
- 4/5
Staff was very nice, the breakfast was great and the location was perfect to walk to downtown. The rooms and hotel seemed to have zero windows… the rooms had none and it made them musty and they smelled. There was zero air flow so it either got way to cold or way too hot. Otherwise the hotel was good.
- 3/5
- 5/5
Love this hotel, it’s very historic Charleston!
- 3/5
Rooms were not well kept ! sofa was broken and sunk in. Toilet stopped up had to request plunger to keep in bathroom !!! Staff were all great and helpful
- 5/5
Nice area, friendly staff and very clean rooms. Would recommend and will visit again.
- 5/5
Olde Tyme Charm and Centrally Located!!
- 5/5
The staff here is awesome, same for the location. The free breakfast and free happy hour at the hotel was top notch. The hotel is dated but clean. I would stay here again as price was worth it.
- 4/5
Property needs updating but great location. Just run down.
- 3/5
Visit was fine until water started flowing into my room around 9pm one night. They did comp one night but no one from Embassy Suites offered to help move several items.
- 4/5
We enjoyed our trip
- 4/5
Itwas a good historic place
- 5/5
Room was clean, staff was friendly and helpful.
- 1/5
This embassy suites is in significant poor shape. Not clean, gross carpet, in disrepair. But Good location. Nice staff. Complimentary water. Good breakfast. I would never stay here again.
- 2/5
we visit Charleston 3 to 4 times per year we will NEVER stay at this hotel again
- 3/5
Clean room but very outdated For instance, if wall was repaired it was not painted over, no full length mirror, little attention to detail. Breakfast was not good at all. Outdated hotel for a very pricey nightly fee. Ridiculous that we had to pay almost $50 per night to park. Would not come back to stay nor recommend to others
- 4/5
Hotel needs some
- 5/5
Great location!
- 5/5
That being said, the hotel did need fixing up (I.e. the door to our room had graffiti on it, which seemed weird because that would seem to be an easy fix). The breakfast room was pleasant and adequate. Although the breakfast room was small, the hotel had plenty of seating throughout the lobby. Nice place to wake up to, but not going to be the highlight of anyone’s vacation. Clean, friendly, Southern charm, great location, friendly staff, and an exceptional value for the price. We enjoyed it, and anyone who is ok with “not perfect”, will enjoy it as well.
- 5/5
Will be our go to for downtown lodging going forward.
- 5/5
great options, hot and cold. Public spaces inside and outside are very nice. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
So close to everything. Clean and safe area.
- 2/5
There was a $100 fee for parking 2 days. Upon entering the property it was very musty smelling. Room felt damp along with cloth furniture. All furnishings were mix/match. Dirty stains and scratched upon wood surfaces. Nothing as I was expecting from Embassy Suits.
- 5/5
The hotel amenities and service were incredible! The energy of the building is intense. The architecture is amazing!
- 4/5
Mediocre hotel in a great location. Staff was very friendly and attentive at breakfast and happy hour. But no hot water and very weak water pressure our last day. Generally, hotel looks worn and ready for a refresh.
- 5/5
We had a blast there and are looking forward to our next visit.
- 4/5
Thank you
- 5/5
Room was a little dated but the amenities offered and location definitely made it for the stay. It was a little price for how old the hotel is but good stay none the less.
- 5/5
LOVED it
- 4/5
Excellent location and within walking distance to dining and shopping. Complimentary breakfast was excellent. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would stay at this location again.
- 3/5
We spent 2 nights at this hotel, we usually love Embassy Suites and were looking forward to Charleston. This hotel is in The Historic District and is very old and you expect it to be. However the rooms were in bad shape, the furniture was falling apart, the curtains were missing rings, the closet didn't close. It was old and shabby and with $48 a day parking, almost $300 a night was way too much for this hotel.
- 3/5
Rooms and couch dirty
- 4/5
The property was great
- 2/5
Unfortunately, Expedia put us in this hotel after canceling two other accommodations on extremely short notice because they were overbooked. The hotel was extremely noisy. The room was not clean, very dirty carpet, dated and worn furniture, terrible WiFi. At one point the elevator was not working l, and maintenance knocked on the door to tell us that our bathtub was leaking into the room below us. In addition, we were bombarded by employees several times asking us to sign up for special offers for other trips/resorts. Just overall poor experience.
- 4/5
Elevator floors were always dirty. Housekeeping of room poor And on day all the coffee cups were leaking
- 4/5
Heard it was a former citadel. The inside corridor was unique. Rooms were just ok. Carpet was dated throughout hotel and rooms- could probably be upgraded. Breakfast options were very good- excellent sausage links. Love how it was right next to Marion square to take a walk-although the grounds crew was running leaf blowers at 7 am. I would stay here again.
- 4/5
Right on Marion Square in the former Citadel complex! Noce room, great breakfast.
- 5/5
The stay wes nice
- 5/5
Great, loved every aspect of the stay
- 5/5
- 5/5
The breakfast was the best!!!!! The A/C worked really well. The staff at breakfast was excellent!!!! It was a great trip!!!
- 5/5
The property is very comfortable and convenient and the staff is very friendly and provide great service. It's also a very convenient location for restaurants and sightseeing.
- 3/5
Property needs a total refresh of the main area for gatherings. Furniture old and I. The grand area, furnishings almost non-existent. What was there was very worn. Even the art work hanging in areas was very odd to say the least. Not attractive for the area we were in. Mostly strange monkeys that look like they belonged on another continent. Li sky historic building but again please refresh rooms and all decor.
- 5/5
It was a comfortable stay with you. The only thing I would say that’s not the best is that the Julie around the hot tub wasn’t clean. Otherwise a fantastic place to stay. I’ve already booked another stay there.
- 3/5
Pros The hotel is the former Citadel Military College from the 1800s. Lobby and Atrium is lovely. Good location. Walkable to many of the sites and restaurants. Good Water pressure in shower. Staff is friendly enough. Happy hour w/ 2 free drinks and light snacks. Breakfast included. Has a pool and patio. Cons The hotel is the former Citadel Military College from the 1800s. No windows in the rooms. Room was very worn. Stuffy. No vent in bathroom. Broken handles on nightstand. Sagging shower rod making the curtain not stay in place. Lighting and decor was awful. Felt like a badly decorated prison. Sheets and pillows were uncomfortable. Room temperature was too warm. Couldn't get it cooler. Unlike other Embassy Suites, the bar was only open for the 2 hour happy hour window. Felt awkward. Zero energy. No music. Just weird. Again, unlike other Embassy Suites, breakfast was just average. Parking is expensive. Valet only. But probably is expensive at every hotel in downtown Charleston. Will book a different hotel next time in Charleston.
- 5/5
The embassy suites at this location is by far the best I have ever stayed in. The breakfast was just totally wonderful. The location is close to everything. That I needed to get to.
- 4/5
This hotel has a very unique layout because it was once a Citadel - it is rich in history but can also feel a bit dated with its traditional interiors. It is a great central spot to access the nearby parks, museums, shopping, and dining, and the staff was incredibly friendly and hospitable.
- 5/5
Incredible historic hotel with top notch staff. We were greeting with sincere service. The Valet and personnel at the check-in area were fabulous. The bartender at the welcome reception was awesome. We loved the location and easy access to King's Street. Great Job on hiring people who know how to make a guest's stay incredible. Well Done!! MJ
- 4/5
The location is wonderful, and the layout of the room worked well for our group.
- 5/5
Professional and friendly staff! Easily walkable to restaurants and historical district.
- 3/5
Hotel needs some renovations, starting with carpet. Things are just old, not in a historic way , just old.
- 3/5
The valet, breakfast, and reception staff were very friendly.
- 5/5
While the property is a little bit dated, it is so well located and the rooms spacious. We enjoyed the extra space i suite for our 3 day adventure in Charleston. Breakfast was great!
- 5/5
My wife and I were on vacation. This hotels location was ideal for our agenda.
- 2/5
Overpriced Valet Parking.
- 3/5
The location is good for restaurants, stores and some attractions. The room itself needed some improvements.
- 5/5
Very nice
- 5/5
Although some of the furnishings could use a refresh, the property was clean and neat. The staff was very accommodating. Everyone was friendly and seemed genuinely happy to serve you.
- 5/5
Great time
- 4/5
Breakfast was great.
- 2/5
Im going to be honest. This is the probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in, for sure the worst embassy suites I have ever stayed in. The locations was perfect and close to downtown And the staff were very nice- the only good things. However the room conditions were awful. Chunks of drywall missing, the furniture was beat and chipped to hell. The couch looked like it was from goodwill and there was no way anyone was sleeping on it. The bathroom was gringy. You could feel the mattress springs. The breakfast buffet was subpar compared to other embassy break buffets, which is a reason i like embassy suites. The omlettes were good but everything else on the self serve bar was ick. This hotel was very dated and old and in need of a major reno and update, esp for being in such a prime location. We were very disappointed and actually ended up checking out a day early.
- 5/5
This property gets a bad rap for being run down. It is but it’s still a clean, well located place to stay. The staff is excellent. The breakfast is delicious. The happy hour is complimentary. The beds were clean and comfy. So much to do around this property. I live the suite concept. It made traveling with my toddler so much easier. This is my new go to place to stay in Charleston.
- 5/5
Beautiful place
- 5/5
I loved the free breakfast and cocktail hour in the evening. Great value for what we got.
- 5/5
Great location!
- 3/5
The staff was kind and courteous. The breakfast selection was nice, and the made-to-order omelet is the Embassy Suite's draw. Plus, the evening cocktails. The hotel needs a complete renovation and a deep cleaning.
- 2/5
This property really shows its age. The parking situation is atrocious and expensive. My TV did not work correctly and when asked for a remedy I was ignored and when they did finally show, they looked at it, left, and then didn't come back. I had to ask several times to get maid service.
- 5/5
It is an older property, but lots of history and the staff was exceptional
- 3/5
Great location. Nice full breakfast. A bit run down . Parking is $$$
- 1/5
Dirty and mold
- 5/5
Property is old and dingy. Needs upgrade.
- 2/5
It’s initially pretty when you walk in. There was a $100 extra charge once we got there that I wasn’t aware of. No parking for the hotel is a big negative. They offered valet parking for $48 a day with very limited parking and isn’t always available. You have to pay to park close by at a city parking lot. Pool closed so early we didn’t get in it. When I closed the bathroom door in the hotel room I swear I seen the wallpaper moved on the back wall like a wave. There was huge cracks up the wall in the room. I do not see us going back there. It had potential, but that potential was not met. If I could get a refund I would.
- 5/5
This property is close to all the shops and dining on King Street. Staff was super helpful and friendly.
- 4/5
I loved the location and the hospitality demonstrated from all the staff members. The dining room staff members were very accomodating and kind. We were greeted with a heartfelt good morning and a respectful " thank you all for coming!" I believe the carpet and bathroom flooring is well overdue for an upgrade. The flooring was notably stained and worned throughout the lobby and hallways of the building. Overall, the stay was enjoyable!
- 5/5
We arrived in the middle of the night and staff was attentive and helpful. They were able to accommodate a room change (double bed instead of a king) at no charge. The valet was very kind, and the breakfast manager was very engaging with all guests (he even called my father “young man” which we loved!). Service was great.
- 2/5
Ready for major overhall.
- 4/5
I thought the inside of the hotel was great. It is older but a lot of history. It was walkable to Fort Sumter Port, City Market and other points of interest. Did not like, even with "Do Not Disturb" sign on door, housekeeper still came into clean while we were out. The breakfast was amazing, spacious room.
- 5/5
Amazing staff and attentions.
- 2/5
Did not like
- 4/5
All in all the hotel needs a total refresh. The staff was great as well as breakfast but the building Needs a LOT of work. Probably would not recommend, we only stayed due to last minute change in our plans.
- 5/5
I would go back
- 1/5
This property was gross and not at all worth the money. Will never stay again and would not recommend
- 3/5
This property is in the heart of Charleston which is great and is truly a bang for your buck. Not the most new or prettiest but was great to have free breakfast, free happy hour, and a reasonable room.
- 4/5
It is a beautifully restored historic building with a great location near Kings Street. The complimentary evening drinks and snacks were a great treat after a long day of sightseeing and walking back to the hotel. The locks and some tech still needs to be updated and we had to wait outside our room for at least 45 minutes till it got fixed by a technician. The only surprisingly rude experience was an encounter with Erika on the front desk - may not have remembered the name right. We wanted to confirm the route to Sullivan’s island beach and understand the best way to enter it. She was not quite nice in her response and ultimately the concierge guided us better.
- 5/5
This hotel is very comfortable, room was clean, and very quiet. Staff super nice
- 5/5
We had a great time in Charleston staying at the Embassy suites by Charleston historic District!! The staff was very friendly. The hotel was clean. Beds were comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. We couldn’t have asked for a better motel for our stay in Charleston.
- 3/5
The staff, and food was amazing. The condition of the property, however was below expectation. The property needs updating. The room really showed its age but this is city with so much to see outside so we enjoyed our stay for what its worth.
- 5/5
Embassy is always a treat anywhere in the Country just a fabulous place to stay
- 5/5
Walkable, big rooms, nice valet and friendly staff
- 5/5
Check -in was good but there was no welcome gift received and the area was convenient and in walking distance of the college.
- 4/5
Our room had no windows which was fine, when we checked in they made it seem like we knew this but we didn't. The hotel staff was fantastic in everyway, everyone was kind, friendly and helpful. Really appreciated an expansive continental breakfast and the afternoon happy hours. The location was excellent to walk to all things in the historic district and great for a family to be able to have extra space.
- 4/5
This is the perfect location and reasonably priced for a downtown hotel. The hotel is older (which should be expected in an older city), but well-maintained and really beautiful on the inside. We visited for a long weekend and would definitely return to this hotel!
- 4/5
Though I have to say is phenomenal and is very close to King Street, which is why I gave it a four star
- 4/5
Needs updated. Very quiet.
- 5/5
Great location
- 3/5
Overall, great location. Room was dated and had no windows. Expensive valet parking.
- 5/5
Great breakfast, and afternoon happy hour. Convenient location.
- 5/5
room 318 was very noisey form out side
- 4/5
Great hotel. Great location.
- 3/5
the pool closed at 9pm 😢😢😢
- 4/5
Was a great hotel! Tony at the front desk was super nice-
- 3/5
There was a parking problem - vallet parking service was full.
- 5/5
Great staff. Great location.
- 5/5
Comfy and spacious room, close to everything!
- 4/5
Room facing the park was quiet from street noise, but one small window so not a lot of natural light. A/C unit was blessedly quiet. None of the rooms have openable windows. Linens were nicely scent-free. Nightlight in the bathroom was a nice little thing. carpet was worn, etc., but bed was comfy (with a light, not crazy-heavy duvet for summer, thx!).
- 5/5
Great stay! The evening happy hour and MTO omelettes were a super nice amenity!
- 3/5
The pool was not opened and we were never notified beforehand
- 2/5
The location is amazing. The guy at the front desk was very nice as was the gentleman at the bar during the evening reception. The valet are a problem. I asked for my car and bell service. I was dismissed by the first guy i found. He had cars ro move he said. No kidding my guy. I had my car driven across the street (about 100 yards away) by another guy i was able to wrangle after watching some very unnecessary and uncomfortablely close calls as other guests had their cars parked and retrieved. They cut one another off randomly for reasons i find unclear. 1 i had to get a cart, load it, and other guests were kind enough to open the door for me. I should have asked for my 20 back to give to them instead. The rooms are spacious, but the decor would have seemed dated in 1997, which could be charming if it were in any way maintained. It looks to be pieces donated by Motel Six's in the area when they remodeled circa early 2000's.its cheap and very battered and worn. The carpet in the doorway is literally unraveled to where i can see the concrete beneath. Any and all repairs seem to be made by people that only have access to a caulking gun and some sheet rock mud that pulls double duty on holes in the tub and cracked bathroom tiles. The room was cold, which lobby was very humid and and every bit of 85.i would feel ripped off paying a quarter of what i am. You cant beat the location, but stay somewhere else and call an uber. Or walk. Charleston is beautiful.
- 4/5
Great location! Excellent service. The reception and breakfast were wonderful. The carpets could use some updating but overall highly recommended.

The property is located in a convenient location. BESIDES THAT my experience was awful. Was laying down in the bed and felt something crawling on my face. I thought is was a knat but to my surprise it was a FREAKING ROACH!!! I reported and they said they will have maintenance check it out. Like reallly, you eed to send them up there to spray. I even showd them a picture of the roach. So my stay was not comfortable after that experience. Tried adding a photo of the roach but it wont let me. Very interesting...

Good location, nice staff but hotel is very dated and smelled like mold in the room.

The staff was impeccable! Happy Hour was a fun experience each night. And the hotel’s proximity to the historic district was great for walking.

Property history and location was great. Had a wonderful stay but the carpet is getting a little worn and could be replaced. Overall very clean though.
