Reviews
The Carpenter Hotel is a unique, boutique hotel in Austin with a cool, funky vibe. Guests appreciate the hotel's location, design, and friendly staff. The hotel's restaurant and coffee shop are also highly praised. However, some guests have issues with the room comfort and noise.
- Unique, cool design and vibe
- Great location near downtown and local attractions
- Room comfort issues (AC, mattress firmness)
- Noise from dogs barking and other guests

I was here mostly for the saltwater pool, which is more of a lounger than a swimmer, and it was excellent. The room was comfortable and stylish and I was impressed by the HVAC system. It was very humid weather during my stay but my room never got damp and the air was always pleasant inside. Not easy to do in central Texas summer in the rain! The restaurant and bar were well-decorated with live plants and artwork. People commented on my trip photos saying “ok Wes Anderson!” which I thought was fun and accurate. I will definitely be back to stay again.

Loved the location near the lake and river. Great bars and restaurant near by. Everything you could want and need in an area. Amazing bar and food. Really cool vibe, it feels like a hub for creatives. The rooms were a touch small. But very comfortable. There were dogs barking outside our window.

It was a cute hotel but the actual accommodations tower was more university dorm than hotel. Also there was no security pass to the elevators which were open to the street and quite far from reception. Lastly - the fridge in the room was completely full of beverages for $$ - and when I moved them to try and fit in my own snacks - I ended up getting charged for drinks I never consumed. I phoned to have the charges reversed - but to date I haven’t seen the credit.
- 5/5
We had a parking problem the first night, we had requested parking but there was none when our plane was late so we had to park on the street. Otherwise, all was fine!

All of the greenery. Coffee was great. Nice staff. Easy to have dog with us!

Very authentic place, green, peaceful, great coffee, nice restaurant. Loved it all!

The hotel was built in 1928 and the remodel was done impeccably. It was so beautiful and they used such high end supplies. It was so nice to look around and see such works of art in the craftsmanship. They had three restaurants on the property. Their food was delicious! We tried them all. They also had numerous conversation areas that were lovely. They had a library and a gift shop. We also loved that our room had a living room with a real comfortable leather chair and velveteen sofa. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The only very small thing was they had instant coffee and no tea bags in the rooms.

Nice, relaxed hotel with a good restaurant and bar, plus friendly staff. We hung out a lot on the premises during a 3-day stay and really enjoyed our stay. Very quiet at night, got some great sleep. We appreciated the amenities. Bathroom sinks are weirdly small. That's such a minor thing, though.

The location was in walking distance of my event, which was perfect. I was greeted by a friendly man at the counter who was excited to let me know that my room was ready early! Always love staying at the Carpenter hotel but unfortunately this visit I wasn’t feeling my best on this trip so I ended up staying in my room or at the pool - which and any other place would have been the downfall but between great room service and walk ability, it was quite the Haven.

Could not rave about this place enough. Was so gorgeous, the staff was incredible, and the decor was top notch. Loved that there was a cafe on site.

Real character and an oasis that you only realise is there when you walk through the door. Bianca on the front desk at 10 pm when id already checked out and was exhausted after working at a trade show . I was moving onto a different hotel and she was so helpful - charged my phone , helped with my bag. Lovely woman! The gym they partner with is great but a mile away - in the heat thats a bit far when you dont have a car.

I loved everything about our stay and will absolutely be staying here again. It's a really well designed hotel and the experience was wonderful. It was quiet and chill while we were there and I would love to plan another trip to Austin to have an excuse to stay here again. The bed and the pillows were so comfortable. The food at the restaurant was great and the coffee shop was both convenient and delicious. No complaints.

I liked the decor, it was colorful, modern and included a nice dining restaurant with a lounge and a cafe for breakfasts. The location was perfect for strolling the bridge and river trails. Close to the best area of downtown Austin. I really liked it. No complaints.

The location is excellent and having some outdoors space was nice for our length of stay. We were the only ones interested in the bikes, so we explored the city for a few days on those, which was a definite bonus! The only thing that I didn’t love was the bed, which was not terribly comfortable for me. Everything else was great!

We (2 adults, 9-year-old, and 2-year-old) stayed at the Carpenter hotel for one night (Saturday-Sunday). We paid a small fee for early check in and they had our room ready with the requested pack n play when we arrived. Parking on site was very easy (received free parking for booking through Expedia). The hotel was very clean and had a cute boho chic vibe. The check-In person was very friendly. We used the cafe and the restaurant and both had excellent service, food, and drinks. We also used the pool, which was very nice! The room was functional, clean, and comfortable- bed was comfortable! The check-out times is at noon, which I thought was generous compared to other hotels. The location was perfect! Walkable to multiple restaurants, parks, and outdoor spaces. Highly recommend this hotel and plan to stay there next time we’re in Austin! The only con I can think of is that the bathroom only has a shower, so might be a deterrent for families with very young kids.

The hotel is aesthetically just cool, location is great, on site coffee shop, restaurant and pool made the stay very convenient. Loved the ambiance of it all. Staff were friendly. Only downside is that I was working remotely during my stay and my room faced a doggy daycare and dogs were barking loudly from morning until late afternoon.

Be aware the rooms do feel a bit barebone, however I believe it is intentionally stylized that way. It is quite a different experience, since all the interior walls and floors are cement block and concrete! The onsite restaurant and coffee house are quite excellent, in fact the coffee house is quite popular with the general public, so it can be quite busy at times. Also , I was taken off guard by the $25 dollar a day "Destination Fee" but I guess I should have read the fine print.... All-in-all it was a unique and enjoyable experience in a very chill atmosphere, and I would highly recommend!

Great walking location to Town Lake and Barton Springs. Lots of “Austin vibes” with hotel style and decor. Spotless. Love that the room has a ceiling fan AND a nice cold AC (and white noise maker:). Wish I’d had more time to try restaurant and pool.. coffee was delish! N/a

Multiple days of additional charges of amenity fees and parking add up quick. Found out about the guest happy hour in the cafe on the second day of our trip, free glass of sparkling wine was nice. It was rainy and overcast for most of our trip so we couldn’t use the pool. Water seemed a bit chilly so it would be nice on a very warm day. No in room coffee. No fridge for personal food and beverage, just mini bar options. Deluxe king room was immediately behind dog daycare/boarding, could hear dogs barking the majority of time in the room even with the door shut and privacy wall engaged.
- 5/5
This place is a vibe. Clean, comfortable, quiet. Staff is lovely and goes above and beyond to make sure you are well taken care of.
- 5/5
The rooms were comfortable, spacious, clean, and well designed. The balcony had a great view of the pool and a bit of the city. It’s central to great shopping areas like South Congress, a walk away from Zilker Park and Lady Bird Lake Trail, and easy to rent a scooter to get around the city. Would 10/10 stay again!
- 4/5
It doesn't take much to please me, but no coffee until 7AM is a deal breaker, not even terrible room coffee. When it was ready, it was good. Everything else was very nice. Sadly for me, I'd love to go back, but "No coffee. No deal".

Reminded me of a college dorm room. Comfortable bed and great shower. It had a balcony looking out over a dog training business.

Love the pet friendly, nice staff, great location. Not enthusiastic about the concrete rooms, but I did like the indoor-outdoor vibe, and the coffee downstairs was the best i've had in ages. Did not enjoy dogs barking in the morning from the doggy daycare just below the building.

The plants everywhere on the property were very beautiful and overall this was a pretty place to stay. Front desk employee, Olivia was very kind and welcoming. Bartender Danny was unkind and not welcoming at all. He treated my husband and I like a nuisance from the second we walked in. He was acting exasperated and overwhelmed even though there was literally no one else in the bar/restaurant at the time. Other restaurant staff were unhelpful as well.

Staff were great, vibe is cool, industrial. Bed was so comfy! Love the basket of snacks available for purchase in the room. Would not recommend for frail or elderly visitors - beds and chairs tend to be low, slope of shower and floor are a bit slippery. Overnight oats for breakfast and chai tea were both outstanding!

location and vibes too many non hotel guests that get priority accommodation over paying guests. if you want to be an event space, be that, but people paying for a hotel service with no room service available and blaring music new year’s day morning after celebrating NYE was the worst way to wake up. couldn’t use the pool area to relax in the morning bc of the “yoga party” that non guests took over the space. no dinner at the restaurant unless you do prefix- and the prefix had no options my husband could eat. the staff doesn’t seem to give a crap about accommodating guests that have been coming here for years. it’s very much no longer a boutique hotel cute and austin-ish. it’s become another money grub corporate headache. i used to love coming here to reset and relax but they seem to care more about catering to influencers and doing it for the gram with their little events than making sure guests have a good experience. i saw peoples cars getting hit in the parking lot. they over sell spaces for overnight then make ppl double park illegally ( in fire lanes) It used to feel like a peaceful oasis, a romantic getaway, now it feels frustrating, over stimulating and like every other corporate regulated business. it took them 40 minutes to bring ice to our room! i got SICK from the undercooked pork i ate during their happy hour (since we weren’t allowed to have regular dinner service) it’s funny too bc NO ONE EVEN CAME TO THEIR PREFIX DINNER. the restaurant was dead yet, us as guests COULDN’T GET FOOD. TBH, one of the worst experiences that i actually paid for.

Beautiful space in the rooms and common areas. The attached cafe was great. Bed was comfy, but for the price, small. Same for the room. There was barely enough space to walk around one side of the bed. And for two people, with luggage, it was cramped. Overpriced. Everything else was great.

This was a nice- just nice not great- property. The price was to high for what you get AND you get charged for overnight parking per night-$35.00! No iron, coffee, or microwave in room and the bed was super low to the ground. On the plus side it is a very clean and pretty property- lots of plants it looks nice. It is cute-very retro and spare. But definitely overpriced.

I paid more, it was stressful, the whole experience was a pain in the neck. I don't believe that I will ever use Expedia again.

Actual rooms were a bit industrial for my taste but done well regardless. Great amenities on site. Beautifully landscaped and very well maintained.

Our room was so cute and it was QUIET! It feels like you’re in a little hidden corner on this property. The only issue we had was with the next day room service. The door hanger said to hang it on your door before 11pm for the next morning room service. We had ours on there at 9:30pm and expected to wake up to breakfast by 8. The door hanger was still hanging on our door so I guess staff forgot to do their rounds to grab it. I mentioned it to the front desk and they said they’d let their staff know. We got Starbucks breakfast instead.

This was our 3rd or 4th stay. Lovely property in a great location with amenities. The price was stated clearly on the 3rd party booking app, but we were charged more upon arrival. They just ran our card at the higher amount without explanation and we only caught it after the fact. They couldn’t explain the price difference except that a deposit was taken that we will get bank in a few days. I imagine we will be calling them again. Price difference was about 85 dollars more for the night.

Unfortunately we were booked for 3 days during the 2025, 4 July weekend flooding event. Being concerned about our safety we contacted the airline for an immediate flight change. It took time to get the flight change confirmed and our subsequent contacting the Carpenter for a day early departure was not accommodated. Very disappointing considering the flooding risk and our need to depart immediately

Pool was very crowded with many non- guests.

What a fun and funky hotel. My 13-year-old son LOVED the vibe, and we overall stayed. We ate at the restaurant at the hotel, and the meal was delicious. Definity a hotel I would stay at again!
- 5/5
Loved it. Cool space. Amazing service.
- 2/5
Parking is limited, even with paying for a spot. We had to clear with staff to park in the handicapped spot because there is not enough spaces. We attempted to use the safe available in the room and the front desk had no idea how to work it.
- 5/5
Hope to stay there again sometime.
- 5/5
We had an absolutely wonderful stay at The Car
- 5/5
Great place to stay. Love the industrial architecture.

Literally the best hotel I think I’ve stayed out in a long time. Coming back for sure.
- 5/5
This place is pretty dope! Cool architectural features. The swimming area is so chill!

Good bed and shower . Good restaurant and good location

Cute, clean, comfortable. Staff was incredibly helpful. 10/10 would recommend.

I chose to stay here overnight with family because of the reviews. The Carpenter Hotel did not disappoint! Outstanding customer service from parking attendant to front desk to the on-site restaurant and cafe. Extra large king bed was appreciated and the sofa/bed was comfortable according to my teen. Any requests were handled immediately. We heard dogs barking late night, but we think it was from the dog daycare next door to the hotel. Overall we loved our experience and would definitely stay again!
- 4/5
Hotel was well kept and just like the photos. Barton Springs was an easy walk with a lot of food options near by. Totally walkable to downtown Austin too! They make you pay for parking on site which isn’t listed here and was a little disappointing. Otherwise, an awesome stay and would stay again!
- 5/5
Pool is amazing and open dawn to dusk so nice and peaceful in the morning. In room snack box is a perfect assortment of goodies. Great little oasis tucked in the city.
- 5/5
Reuse of an older building. Eclectic area.
- 5/5
It was great! Just waiting for my receipt.
- 5/5
My stay at The Carpenter was excellent! Customer service, cleanliness, amenities, location and vibes were a 10/10.
- 5/5
With all the extra charges at check in and check out, (without room-service) one might be better off to book the room directly with the hotel instead of an off-site platform, no savings, but worth it. Pool area is really great. the place has an authentic Austin vibe. Staff are among the best. We will stay here again.
- 5/5
I’m so pleased I booked this hotel - it couldn’t have been better. I stayed for 8 nights and the location was brilliant, walkable to everything I wanted to do and close to several excellent food options (Terry Black’s for barbecue, P Terry’s for burgers, and many others). The room was incredibly clean (I walked around the room barefoot on the concrete flooring and feet stayed clean - very impressive), spacious and comfortable with everything I needed, and no noise from neighbouring rooms. Excellent service from all the team, they were really helpful and welcoming. The coffee shop and pool at the hotel were also fantastic. I didn’t use room service but did order food at the pool one day and that was great, and very good value too. The rooms and all areas of the hotel are very well designed and very well maintained, and I hope to have a reason to return to Austin so that I can stay at the Carpenter Hotel again.
- 5/5
Every single staff member I met was gleeful and helpful. Rooms are great, elevators quick, food is phenomenal (do they have a Michelin chef there?). I can’t say enough great things. I’m 60 and feared I was going to be aged out by the under crowd, but never felt younger. Keep up the great work
- 5/5
This was our second stay at the Carpenter. The location is walkable, and easy to get around to other areas of Austin. We liked sitting out on the patio in the room. The room service for coffee in the morning was very quick, as was the service at the pool. All the staff were friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Amazing place!
- 5/5
all good
- 4/5
Super cute, eclectic property in a great location. Staff was super friendly and the restaurant was wonderful.
- 5/5
I really loved everything about this hotel. I got to enjoy the saltwater pool. The restaurant and cafe all had fantastic food and beverages. Aesthetically very cool inside and out. All of the staff were so friendly and made me feel right at home. Location was perfect as I was able to run in zilker park and walk to Barton Springs for a swim.
- 5/5
The hotel was easy to find and located where we could easily visit all the places we wanted to go. The restaurant was amazing, and the rooms were comfortable, but the coffee shop was overcrowded. It would have been nice to take our laptops and sit with our morning coffee, but it was really crowded. The bar was a nice alternative, but we had our teenage son with us, and he wasn't comfortable with this option.

I loved the hotel! So cute and retro. The only thing that was wrong was the television was broken. Overall, 8.5/10
- 5/5
Relaxing oasis inside Austin.
- 5/5
Friendly, coffee cafe, restaurant and bar on property. Unique design.
- 4/5
Cute design… retro… industrial. Staff are all friendly… chill vibe. A/C blower motor in room sounded like an overloaded clothes washer on spin cycle… given the presence of ear plugs and a white noise machine in the room, the noise level is apparently known to the hotel. Guests should also be aware of the adjacent dog day care facility and be prepared for the early AM barking. All in all, we would stay again but we would definitely request a room AWAY from the doggie day care and one with a quiet a/c system.
- 5/5
All positives give it 12 stars! I wish the bathroom lighting was done by me. It’s so bright! Haha. As in any hotel not all rooms are equal so if you face the dog park area you will hear barking during the day but not at night….so not an issue for us. I would prefer to face Juliet , a fun bar across street.
- 5/5
The Carpenter Hotel is my favorite hotel I’ve ever stayed at in all my travels!
- 5/5
Unusual decor reminds one of a spa swim club. Interesting to learn that this was one a place where visiting carpenters stayed, hence the name. We had a private balcony looking into the branches of a large pecan tree. We loved every aspect of our room. And nearby Barton Springs Rd. has lots to offer!
- 4/5
We stayed for a couple of nights in April. It is a very interesting property. The main area and restaurant are pretty cool. The area with the rooms is very different but comfortable enough.
- 4/5
The AC was so loud it kept me up at night. That’s a big fail!
- 4/5
Stayed here for a wedding. Overall very pleased. Extremely friendly staff. Only (minor) complaints is pool got crowded and had extremely loud music when I would have preferred to read. And no good lobby sitting area. But I would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
The hotel is comforting, like stepping out of today’s busy world into a slower place under the pecan trees with a patio and a pool out of the 1960s
- 4/5
Relaxing stay as a solo female traveller chilling in Austin for a few days. Rooms were great and had a stocked mini bar but docking a star for no in room coffee. The hotel has a cafe but was so busy in the mornings. Even just an Nespresso machine would’ve been nice! Restaurant food was really good but service slow. Pool was lovely and could order drinks and food direct from the hotel bar and restaurant.
- 5/5
Carpenter is always a great stay! Clean and comfortable
- 5/5
Always love staying here. Kind staff, clean hotel, and easy covered parking.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel- quirky. Pool is amazing under beautiful trees- but still sunny. All staff are amazing.
- 5/5
Great stay. Staffs were really nice and helpful. We got upgraded when checked in. Highly recommended
- 3/5
The property was overall nice to stay at. However, there was a power outage that lasted almost two hours on Thursday night, which severely impacted our stay and made the last night (and following morning) tough. It was unfortunate in that we felt like a big chunk of our stay was hampered by the power outage.
- 4/5
Super cute, staff is very nice. My only issue is that it’s impossible to get a free cup of coffee which is something I’ve never, ever experienced at a hotel. Instead you have to pay at the coffeeshop in the lobby. It’s over $5 for an Americano. I live in NYC and even I think that’s completely ridiculous.
- 5/5
Great service and very nice hotel.
- 5/5
great style great coffee

I had a great time at Carpenter for a work trip. I loved my time there. I knocked off a star because I had to reach out for an inaccuracy on my bill. When you travel monthly for work it’s a bother to check back on missed details like this.

The best customer service

Easy parking, convenient location to the bridge and Barton springs. The rooms themselves are quiet (you won’t hear neighbors), but the hallway is super loud (you will hear every suitcase, door, and conversation from out there). It’s quality and clean with fun decor and amazing showers! The front desk staff are always super kind. Would stay again and recommend.

I love the vibe of the Carpenter Hotel. I stay here everytime I am in Austin. It is small and unique, not standard style hotel. They have a great coffee shop that attracts the community and a great restaurant.
- 5/5
I travel extensively and always try to book unique boutique hotels. I had no idea that The Carpenter Hotel existed but selected from a list provided by Hotels.com. This hotel is a dream funky interesting and unique. It deserves to be considered iconic and it will one day be in the company of the Chelsea in NYC and Liberty Hotel in Boston. The staff is excellent and fit right with the hotel’s image. A great experience in all respects.
- 5/5
Greatest hidden gem in Austin. Quiet, safe, and romantic in PRIME location. I’ve found my go to hotel when I come back to Austin.
